Contaminated Cures for Soul Care

send to a friend #6  Posted by Travis Hawkins  |  Monday, September 08, 2014at 1:32 PM I think our understanding of mental illness is of vital importance. I am not dredentialed in any way to respond to this post, but have a singular qualification, I was diagnosed type 1 manic depressive with concurrent or featured paranoia in my late twenties. My first "manic episode" was undoubtedly the most terrifying experience I have ever had the displeasure of suffering. I was transported into and out of a realm of consciousness where reality split into the hallucinatory visions and never ending dialogues of of persons who simply were not there and the world my mind and body had always perceived. As a believer, the daunting question which oovertook me time and again was, "am I being tormented by demonic spirits OR am I experiencing the trauma of a physiologic malfunction in my brain?" A professor at the college I was attending was a person of deep conviction and true faith.

Truthbomb Apologetics: Video: The Kalam Cosmological Argument by J.P. Moreland

Welcome! It's been wisely stated that the way one answers the question, "Is there a God?" defines a life. Here at Truthbomb Apologetics we strive to offer apologetics resources to encourage and challenge both believer and unbeliever. Critical thinking is strongly encouraged, reason is a must, and all are welcomed!

Atheism and Evil in the Name of God - Apologetics Guy

I recently saw an animated short created by an atheist on YouTube. In this video, a bunch of theists were trying to tell an atheist about God. But then the theists began to threaten each other with weapons and argue over whose religion was right! Not surprisingly, the atheist character came out as the level-headed one as he tried to calm everyone down and stop the violence. Although this cartoon caricatured religious people, it did reveal a bit about how some skeptics see religiously-motivated violence and why they so quickly reject a belief in God.

New Every Morning, New Every Moment

Every single moment is new. Every moment is a completely unique creation by God the Father through God the Son who is upholding the universe at that moment by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:2–3). Never is a moment neglected. Never is a moment repeated. Each moment is a new, infinitely powerful and complex word spoken by the Word with deliberate intention (John 1:1). Every moment God makes he decides to be utterly faithful to his character and his purposes. Every new moment God commits to fulfill what he says he will do.

6 Grace to You

In a recent, introductory sermon to the book of Acts, I made some observations about the culture in which early Christians lived.  I noted that the environment at the time of the church’s birth was not Christian friendly.  The world in which the first Christians...

Should Christians use in vitro fertilization? In vitro-literally “in glass”-fertilization (IVF) is an increasingly popular form of reproductive technology that should raise significant moral concerns in the hearts and minds of believers. First, there are major moral concerns associated with using biotechnology in place of the natural means for procreation. The fertilization of an egg […]

Al-Qaeda Announces New Affiliate in South Asia

It is noteworthy that Zawahiri reiterates his oath of allegiance to Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar in the video releasedWednesday. Zawahiri may be trying to convey that the al-Qaeda/Taliban nexus in South Asia is alive and well and still has ideological sway in the region. The Taliban is a proven fighting force that has survived a decade of U.S. and NATO military intervention and affiliating itself with the movement gives al-Qaeda credibility.

NCAA drops Penn State's postseason ban

"This is deserved because those penalties were never deserved," said Jay Paterno, former Penn State assistant under his father. "I am happy for the university and the team. This is a great thing for the university and the football program but there is still a lot to be done and a lot to be corrected. I think the NCAA saying this relief is because of the Mitchell report process is a cover for the fact that there was a faulty Freeh report."

God’s Beauty for the Bored, Busy, and Depressed

Second, God’s beauty fills the affections of our heart, which is essential if we are going to meet our foes of sin and temptation with success. “The world tells me that selfish indulgence in lust is where the fun is,” Dane said. On the contrary, “Edwards writes all over the place about quietly enjoying the beauty of God, and communing with him in his Son, who is the mighty and radiant friend of sinners like me. To use a word Edwards delightfully used, enjoying God happifies us.”

When You Don’t Feel Like Worshiping

At the beginning of Psalm 40 David’s heart was not full of worshipful feelings. Quite the contrary, actually. He felt like he was in a pit of destruction, and stuck in miry clay (Psalm 40:2). But then God lifted him from that pit of destruction, set his feet upon a rock, and put a song of praise in his mouth (Psalm 40:2–3).

Shame, the Image of God, and Finding Freedom to Love

This is my greatest joy as a Christian pastor. I get to tell people such a remedy exists. When Jesus allowed himself to be stripped, spit on, taunted, rejected, and made nothing on the cross—when he, the one who had nothing to be ashamed of, surrendered to the ruthless, relentless shaming that led to our redemption and healing—he neutered our shame and stripped it of its power. He who was rich became poor so that we through his poverty we might become rich (2 Cor. 8:9). But our riches are more solid, so much more solid, than mere material riches. Our riches are the kind that free us from having to be affluent or thin or intelligent or networked or famous or anything else the world says we must be in order to matter. Our riches are the kind that assure and reassure us we have nothing left to hide, nothing left to fear, and nothing left to prove. Because Jesus took on himself the full freight of our shame, we are no longer under pressure to exhaust ourselves with endless and futile efforts to make something of ourselves. We now have an inner resource that can liberate us from self-preoccupation.

Not the You You Remember

Women don’t develop signs of age by sitting in the shade. A morning spent in the sun at the park chasing toddlers, an afternoon at a track meet cheering on a nephew, or a week in El Salvador providing dental care for the poor will eventually show up on your face. A wrinkled face is the sum of many days of living, days full of hard work, tears, and smiles. Would you wish those days away? Would you give all your laughter to be rid of your laugh lines?

Here’s The Difference Between Working At Facebook, Google, And Microsoft — According To Someone Who Has Worked At All Three

DK: Professionally, I prefer startups because I like to be surrounded by people who are not just working 9-5 but prefer to get things done. In terms of scope of work, overall culture, and making sure the spirit is sustained intact for quarters and years, large companies are better. It's really hard to scale a startup to years, while with a company like Microsoft, Google, or Facebook, it's just there. You don’t need to go through small steps. It's already there.

Seminary Wives Institute

At Southern Seminary, we recognize the need for God-called ministers’ wives to be prepared for ministry. We believe that a minister’s wife needs to be educated and equipped as she and her husband prepare for service in the churches and beyond. The time a student wife is in the seminary setting with her husband is the perfect time to undertake this training. She has opportunity to network with other wives who are preparing for the place God has for them. She will benefit from her study with faculty wives who can share from their rich experience. The courses in the Seminary Wives Institute (SWI) are designed to give ministers’ wives biblically based and practically applied teaching. They are taught by our own seminary faculty as well as faculty wives and guest speakers. We are committed to make this institute a vital part of the seminary wife’s experience at Southern Seminary.

Will InterVarsity Losing Cal State Standoff Be Tipping Point for Campus Ministries Nationwide?

"This could be the tipping point of other university systems moving in this direction, so that's why we are concerned,” InterVarsity president Alec Hill told CT earlier this summer. While only a handful of universities have enacted such policies, Cal State’s 450,000 students on 23 campuses could tip the scales “in the sense of public policy and other university systems moving in this direction,” he said.

10 Theories About Who Really Wrote The Bible - Listverse

An ordinary Christian and a biblical scholar look at the Bible in tremendously different ways. The average churchgoer knows nothing of the textual problems beneath the familiar words. Bible scholars, however, consider the book a human artifact like any other. They have made it their life’s work to decode and deconstruct it from that perspective.

InterVarsity "Derecognized" at California State University's 23 Campuses: Some Analysis and Reflections

It's not just InterVarsity that will be impacted. Following the same logic, any group that insists on requiring its leaders to follow an agreed upon set of guiding beliefs is no longer kosher (irony intended) at California's state universities. This will impact many other faith-based organizations with actual, well, faith-based beliefs. Presumably, even People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would have to allow Oscar Meyer to lead their campus chapters.

Truett Cathy Has Died: Some Thoughts of the Man and his Mission

He taught a Sunday School class most of his life at a church in South Atlanta. My friend and co-author Philip Nation was his Minister of Education. I once had the opportunity to train the Sunday School teachers at his church. Truett was not there that day, but he often was, and his passion was. Those teachers wanted to learn the Bible and knew it was important—if a billionaire could find the time to do it, so would they.

7 Bible Verses That Will Give You The Boost You Need When Having a Bad Day

Are you having a bad day? Need something to give you a clear head and make you feel better? Well, you don't have to look further than the Bible. The Bible has great verses and scripture quotes to help Christians brighten up and reflect on their attitudes.

Fired 'Back to the Bible' Pastor Cleared of Charges by Megachurch

During yesterday's Sunday service, Calvary elder Bill Bailey told the 4,000-member congregation that the investigation concluded the alleged violation of Calvary Church's policies "was not supported," though Munro "used judgment that did not align with the high expectations to which church leaders are held.” Munro acknowledged he committed "an innocent error of judgment that while was neither unlawful nor sinful, failed to demonstrate the judgment the church expects of me.” The Charlotte Observer reports the details .

No One Is Born Gay

As stated by gay activist and history professor John D'Emilio, "'Born gay' is an idea with a large constituency, LGBT and otherwise. It's an idea designed to allay the ingrained fears of a homophobic society and the internalized fears of gays, lesbians and bisexuals. What's most amazing to me about the 'born gay' phenomenon is that the scientific evidence for it is thin as a reed, yet it doesn't matter. It's an idea with such social utility that one doesn't need much evidence in order to make it attractive and credible."

The Age of Atheists

What's more, Watson identifies numerous underlying threads uniting them all and making their presence felt in the lives of faithful parishioners. To take one example, his discussion of Freud, Maslow, Rogers, the search for self-realization, and the "triumph of the therapeutic" as a replacement for religious transcendence feels particularly relevant. If we're going to appeal to the cultural narratives people are embracing, we need to know their roots as well as the various moods, tones, and nuances they can take on. If we're not adept at recognizing more than one or two shades of unbelief, our outreach and preaching will likely only reach one or two shades of unbelievers.

Solar system simulation reveals planetary mystery

When we look at the Solar System, what clues show us how it formed? We can see pieces of its formation in asteroids, comets and other small bodies that cluster on the fringes of our neighborhood (and sometimes, fly closer to Earth.)

Is It Wise to Sign a Prenup?

Sign a prenup, it is a contract that protects you should he commit sin against you and God, like cheating, or abuse. It is an agreement setting out the rules should things go wrong and 45% of the time it does. A marriage is a commitment and should the other party break that commitment you should have a choice to leave. God doesn't force people to act humanly should the other party choose to violate the marriage, you shouldn't be forced to stick around only due to financial reasons. If Christians tell you financial reasons are enough to keep a marriage together once it has ended they're really out of touch with life and God on this issue. A prenup forces the other party to be wholly committed if they were not, a man or woman might cheat on you and sin against God and themselves but might not proceed if they stand to lose 1/2 their money and pay alimony.

New Witness Claims Michael Brown Told Worker About Jesus Minutes Before He Was Shot

One of two witnesses to the Michael Brown shooting, identified as an outsider who was working in Ferguson the day the teen was shot, is sharing his perspective on what happened, including the claim that Brown told his colleague about Jesus just minutes before he was killed.

There must be few pastors who have not repeated the words of the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:7, with a wistfulness equal to his: “You were running well. Who hindered you?” The Apostolic finger had touched upon the timeless tragedy of a life that showed early spiritual promise yet was blighted by a lack of perseverance. It is, of course, the same sad story as Jesus told in the parable of the sower, when He describes the one who “hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while” (Matt. 13:20).

NC Megachurch Pastor John Munro No Longer Suspended; Investigation Finds Allegation 'Not Supported'

Dr. John Munro, senior pastor of Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, will return to church this coming Sunday, weeks after he was placed on paid leave for alleged violation of the employee handbook, a complaint that a third-party investigation did not find support for. The Back to the Bible ministry had earlier fired him as their radio Bible teacher for "inappropriate conduct and behavior."

Remembrance of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks: Prayer Services Sweep the Nation

President Barack Obama will be joining those remembering the events from Sept. 11, 2001 this week. First, the Commander in Chief meets  Tuesday with the bipartisan congressional leadership about his strategy regarding the Islamic State, which has taken areas of land in Iraq and Syria in an attempt to establish a caliphate that presents possible threats to the U.S. Then, one day before the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on Wednesday, Obama is scheduled to address Americans on his strategy regarding the Islamic State. The following day, the president as well as First Lady Michelle Obama will lead a moment of silence commemorating 9/11 on the South Lawn at the White House. Later that day, the Obamas will attend the annual September 11th Observance Ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial.

High School Dropout Rate Could Double Under Common Core

A study released last year by a pro-Common Core group predicted that under Common Core's stricter set of state education standards, six-year high school dropout rates will likely double for states adhering to the federally incentivized nationally-based testing.

Scripture tells us that God is love. Because of that, many Christians boldly proclaim that their God is a God of love. Is it possible that the God of love some people are talking about is actually an idol? How should we understand First John 4:8? In this message entitled “God is Love,” Dr. Sproul teaches us about the biblical nature of the God of love, and how that informs us of how we ought to love one another.

Six Major Implications of the Growth of Multisite Churches

It is one of those topics that almost always engenders lively discussion. Some church leaders are incredibly and positively excited about the multisite church movement. Others view the movement with many questions if not some level of suspicion.

Meet the New Kingdom Investors

China has emerged as a powerhouse in the global market, and many expect it to surpass the United States as the world’s economic superpower in years to come. But the same growth that has improved the quality of life for millions of Chinese is arguably hampering it in Tanzania, Nigeria, Mozambique, and other African countries where China is buying land at astonishing rates. For example, in just two years (2011 to 2013), China’s investments in Tanzania grew from $700 million to $2.1 billion. “China is very keen on establishing brand-name equity or recognition among African consumers, because the African population is going to double by the middle of the century,” Howard French, author of China’s Second Continent , recently told NPR.

Obama's Slow Response to ISIS Inspires Ted Cruz to Run for President?

Upset with how the Obama administration has handled recent global conflicts such as the rising threat from the Islamic State, Tea Party Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, appeared to suggest he has an increased interest in seeking a 2016 presidential bid.

Joan Rivers Fought the Law...

If you’re like me (and I hope you’re not), then the name Joan Rivers meant little more to you than “that horribly plastic old woman who can’t think of anything better to do than provide red carpet snark for E!”. Which is why, as news of her passing spread last week (having occurred during a “minor elective procedure”) it seemed at best trivial and at worst ironic, especially in light of other recent celebrity comic deaths.

Cancer Threatens One Teacher's Job But Her School Fought for Her! A Heartfelt Act of Kindness (VIDEO)

But, her fellow teachers did something beautiful and unexpected. They used their own sick days and gave them to Carol so she doesn't get laid off from her job. This is an incredible outpouring of love from one person to another. God has definitely blessed those teachers with his love.

A worthy manner

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

Stephen Hawking Says 'God Particle' Could Destroy the Universe

Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has warned that the Higgs boson, also known as the "God particle," is capable of destroying the universe if it happens to become unstable and thereby cause a "catastrophic vacuum decay" leading to the collapse of time and space.

45 A Brief Overview of the Christian Science Worldview | Cold Case Christianity

In 1866, at the age of 45, Eddy suffered a fall and a spinal injury. She turned to the Bible for answers and recovered from the injury quickly (and unexpectedly). She spent the next three years studying the Bible and forming the basis for Christian Science as a philosophy of mind, a theory of healing, and a theological system. She tested her theories for several years and eventually published “Science and Health” (later re-titled as “Science and Health with a Key to the Scriptures”) in 1875. She advanced this theological view and theory of science by establishing the Christian Science Church from students she taught at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College in the 1880’s. Today, there about 100,000 members of Christian Science in over 60 countries. They use the Bible and “Science and Health with a Key to the Scriptures” as their two sacred texts.

'Satan Went Into' Vladimir Putin, Says Ukrainian Orthodox Leader

A prominent Orthodox Church leader in Ukraine has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is being guided by Satan.

No. No, they don’t. Not really. Not in the end of the story (which is really just the beginning). No, they don’t matter here on earth where we will all either grow bellies or waste away to nothing, where the grey hair eventually goes white or disappears completely, where wrinkles grow exponentially, breasts sag, and strength fails. Beauty is so fleeting, so temporal, a vapor.

Stirrings of Revival in Latin America

Because of dissatisfaction with superficial Christianity, there is an amazing hunger for the Word of God throughout Latin America. True believers are devouring anything that will help them handle the Word of Truth. More and more we hear of churches turning to sound doctrine for the first time. In a recent conference, I saw more than a hundred pastors from different countries step forward and repent of ministries that did not honor God.
