Should Christians use in vitro fertilization? In vitro-literally “in glass”-fertilization (IVF) is an increasingly popular form of reproductive technology that should raise significant moral concerns in the hearts and minds of believers. First, there are major moral concerns associated with using biotechnology in place of the natural means for procreation. The fertilization of an egg […]

Grace to You

In a recent, introductory sermon to the book of Acts, I made some observations about the culture in which early Christians lived.  I noted that the environment at the time of the church’s birth was not Christian friendly.  The world in which the first Christians...

Grace to You

Satan's onslaughts may seem overwhelming at times, but don't be discouraged. See them for what they are: a defeated foe's last-ditch efforts to inflict damage on the conquering army. The Lord will strengthen and protect you, just as He has protected all believers before you.

Grace to You

The Christian’s first responsibility is not to go and start working as soon as he sees a need but to come to the Lord in prayer. Waiting on the Lord is a crucial part of serving Him. Before the disciples received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost they were not prepared to witness for Christ, and He therefore instructed them “not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which,’ He said, ‘you heard of from Me’” (Acts 1:4).

Be Silent

The Lord knows the thoughts of our heart (Psalm 94:11), so we’re not keeping silent so as to "hide" our sin from God; we're keeping silent so as to protect others from our sin. Proverbs 10:19 says, "When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable" (NASB). In the video below, I talk more about this idea of silence and its impact on those around us.

Expositors Summit

Preaching is not an advisory role based in religious expertise but a prophetic function whereby God speaks to his people. For this reason the Expositors Summit is designed to strengthen and instruct preachers and students for the glorious task of expository ministry. You’re invited to join R. Albert Mohler Jr., John MacArthur and H.B. Charles Jr. for the explication of God’s Word and gospel fellowship.

Work Hard, Work Smart, and Trust the Lord

Sales often gets a bad reputation. It’s a cutthroat, dirty business sometimes marked by lying, deception, and manipulation. While I want to be successful and make money, I don’t want those practices to mark my work. In my work, I see people use customers to make a deal, without thinking about the best interests of the customer. As a Christian, I want to work in a way where money is not my ultimate goal.

4 Surefire Ways to Get the Most from the Next Conference You Attend

I love your conference-going advice, Michael. I think taking good notes is essential, and I like the idea of coming back to your room at a decent hour. I’m an introvert, and I find this downtime necessary for rest and processing. Often I will read over the notes, pray, and journal. It really helps me to maximize the experience. I also think it’s important to follow up with people you’ve met. Depending upon the conference, you may have promised something to an individual (say, sending a book proposal), so it’s good to do what you have said you’d do–or perhaps write a thank-you note. I’ve also made friends via conferences, and I love staying in touch after the conference event. Great advice here. Thanks for giving it! Lynn

God's Not Dead: God's Not Dead! Nietzsche, Moral Absolutes, and Evolution

Some cultists advance the idea that life is about knocking on enough doors to sell magazines or to participate in enough temple and occult rituals to please God. Selected Hindus suggest one must stay pure to escape the Karmic cycle. The Prussian born Friedrich Nietzsche advanced the idea that life was about attaining power. Nietzsche wrote of the will of power, the Superman, and magnificent destinies. Yet, Nietzsche was a physically and emotionally weak man: headaches, unattractive, bad eyesight—a tragic figure. He ironically asserted, “A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.”[5] A few years later, he fell into insanity and repeatedly declared that he was Jesus Christ.[6]

5 Reasons You Can Teach Revelation to Youth

One of the apostle Paul’s favorite metaphors for the Christian life is “walking” in the faith. I’ve led several camping trips, and it’s always helpful to know where you’re going whenever you set out on a journey. Revelation (especially chapters 21-22) offers a vision of the end toward which all history is moving (which, we find, is actually a new beginning—a new creation). So many significant life decisions happen between the ages of 15 and 25. Revelation can help youth more faithfully orient their lives here and now along the trajectory of God’s new creation.

Fifty Shades, Twilight, and Teaching Young Women to Desire Abusers

Fifty Shades is also the latest blockbuster series to celebrate the attraction of young women to older, abusive predators. In an earlier era of fantasy stories, the goal of a hero was to protect a woman from evil by slaying the dragon. In many of today’s fantasy stories, the hero  is  the dragon, whose mission is to seduce a woman by his evil.

Why Christians Should Read Shakespeare

With characteristic enthusiasm, the editor of the Crossway blog site suggested that I write on “Why Every Christian Should Read Shakespeare.” I have reined in his enthusiasm with a touch of Dutch realism. I want people who have what it takes to read Shakespeare to do so, but not everyone has the requisite skills to make it possible. This is not a moral failing, so no guilt necessarily or automatically attaches to not reading and viewing Shakespeare. On the other hand, I would like some of my readers to upgrade the quality of their leisure life by dipping into Shakespeare.

The More Research the Better

Thanks to the AHA, we now know that when you tell people “under God” was added in the “Cold War” and point out that some value “unity more than religion,” people give a different answer. LifeWay Research found that when merely asked about its removal, the vast majority of Americans wanted the phrase to remain. Actually, that’s what every polling firm would find it they just asked the simple question.

In a world increasingly indifferent to Christian truth, followers of Christ need to be equipped to communicate with those who do not speak their language or accept their source of authority. Come learn from Greg Koukl as he demonstrates how to get in the driver's seat, keeping any conversation moving with thoughtful, artful diplomacy. You'll learn how to maneuver comfortably and graciously through the minefields, stop challengers in their tracks, turn the tables andmost importantlyget people thinking about Jesus. Soon, your conversations will look more like diplomacy than D-Day. Drawing on extensive experience defending Christianity in the public square, Greg will discuss how to: - Initiate conversations effortlessly - Present the truth clearly, cleverly, and persuasively - Graciously and effectively expose faulty thinking - Skillfully manage the details of dialogue - Maintain an engaging, disarming style even under attack Tactics provides the game plan for communicating the compelling truth about Christianity with confidence and grace.

The Community of St Anselm

The invitation – and challenge – is to spend a year in God’s time. This will mean taking a courageous step aside from the busyness of contemporary life to listen to God: what he desires for our wounded world, and how he longs to equip us to be part of its healing.

Kathryn Jean Lopez - Never Again

In an interview in 2011, Foley talked about his time in a Libyan prison. A few days into his captivity, he heard a knock on the wall of his cell. He then heard the muffled voice of an American contractor, also detained there, who read to him from the Gospel according to Matthew, and they prayed together. “In a very calm voice, he’d read me Scripture once or twice a day,” Foley told the interviewer. “Then I’d pray to stay strong. I’d pray to soften the hearts of our captors. I’d pray to God to lift the burdens we couldn’t handle. And I’d pray that our Moms would know we were OK.”

Church Leaders Predict Repression Over Objections To Gay Coupling

Many evangelicals are (rightly) timid about engaging these cultural flashpoints, but there is coming a time (or perhaps it’s already here) where you will not have a choice. The culture war is not somewhere out there anymore. It’s knocking on your door and next will be barging into your house. Recognizing their understanding of truth is at odds with the cultural mainstream, many Christians will be tempted to capitulate to the spirit of the age or simply shy away and disengage. Neither of these options can work.

The Identical

And that’s where the story starts to fall apart. The film mostly sticks with Ryan Wade — we see him growing up in a loving, churchgoing family and developing a talent for singing — but almost completely abandons the twin who was left behind, Drexel Hemsley. We later learn that Drexel has grown up to be a rock star nicknamed “The Dream,” who partly inspires Ryan’s desire to be a singer too. But we don’t learn how Drexel got there — escaping dire poverty to make it to the top of the radio charts. We also don’t learn much about Drexel’s personality or convictions . . . except that we see him drinking whiskey. Once. While brooding music plays. So, that.

This will be very welcome news to those who have been watching the spread of jihad across the Middle East and Africa and beyond.

How to Avoid Death Panels

I t shows the level of suspicion people have for government and the health care system that many of us distrust paying doctors to engage in end-of-life discussions. Indeed, during the run-up to the passage of Obamacare, Sarah Palin labeled a never-passed provision to pay doctors for such conversations, “death panels.” That political sound bite struck such a powerful chord that it quickly entered the lexicon.

Although the Holy Spirit is sometimes the forgotten Person of the Trinity, His presence and work is found throughout redemptive history. In this twelve-message series, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson traces the work of the third person of the Trinity through Scripture - from creation to the work of Christ to His dwelling in our hearts today. Along the way, he sheds light on the vital role the Holy Spirit serves. Dr. Ferguson’s goal is to help us know the Holy Spirit as a person, in addition to knowing of His power and work within us.

The Ninth Commandment is About Much More than Lying

a., I appreciate your response. I think you did indeed understand what I said. I said that the above is a law. I was then asking the question of why we are left at the end of the article with a law and nothing more. It is by the promise of God that we believe and by faith he will manifest his good works in us. So by faith can and will fulfill this law because God has promised that we will. So I stand strongly with Owen on this matter, that we should be practicing and doing righteousness. It is an important thing though that one should not approach a law with their own effort. But rather they should approach it with prayer and faith and then walking they will walk by it without falling.

How To Talk About Abortion

Destruction of the embryo in the mother’s womb is a violation of the right to live which God has bestowed upon this nascent life. To raise the question whether we are here concerned already with a human being or not is merely to confuse the issue. The simple fact is that God certainly intended to create a human being and that this nascent human being has been deliberately deprived of his life. And this is nothing but murder.

More Mars Hill Pastor Resignations: Adam Ramsey and Gary Shavey

Tonight at the close of our Student Ministry I had to communicate some difficult news. We have just learned that Pastor Adam Ramsey has decided to transition out of his role as the Director and Teaching Pastor for Mars Hill student ministries. He has been a dear friend and great pastor that has blessed so many in his ministry here. He has plans to return to Australia with his family and plant a church there. There’s a second bit of news that hits us even deeper here at Mars Hill Sammamish. Deacon Josiah Diener has decided to step down from his leadership position here at our church. He shared with me that he has some personal convictions that would prevent him from continuing to lead in student ministry in good conscience. He intends to stay and worship with us but cannot lead in the way that is best for our students. I have appreciated Josiah’s willingness to serve Jesus and our students with passion and conviction. He too has been a great blessing that the Holy Spirit brought and used at our church.

Joan Rivers Dead: Comedian on Jewish Faith, the Holocaust and Jesus Loving His Mom

Rivers was actually born Joan Alexandra Molinsky, the daughter of Russian Jews who immigrated to New York. She never forgot where her parents came from or the importance of remembering the Jewish traditions and history. However, she also made cutting remarks about religion and those same Jewish roots.

The Bible contains amazing narratives about miraculous feats accomplished by the envoys and servants of the Lord. Sometimes, Christians get lost in the miraculous nature of the stories and fail to identify the purpose of the miracles themselves. Apart from aiding God’s people in loving displays of grace and tenderness, miracles, more importantly, validated the individuals as servants of the Lord and gave authenticity to the Word of God that surrounded them. Jesus, the true, living Word of God, performed more miracles than all the other servants of the Lord combined, and in a span of much less time than God’s other tools. It reminds us of the unique nature of our Savior, the Son of God, the Logos, in whom the fullness of God is revealed in power and majesty.

48 Wesley J. Smith - I'm Revising/Updating Culture of Death

I have been rereading COD for the first time in several years and find that my problem isn’t going to be what to include, but exclude–and deciding what original material has to go. I could write another book-length critique on the continuing challenges to Hippocratic values in medicine and healthcare public policy.
