Faith Alone: How (Not) to Use a Reformed Slogan

No truth was more central to the Reformation that turned the world upside down 500 years ago next month: God justifies sinners by faith alone.

Have You Been Deceived by this False Gospel Sweeping the Nation?

"Sometimes people have no historical perspective, and they look at every new crisis as the end of the world."

False Gospels Deserve True Fury

Eternity hangs on the truth of the genuine gospel. Anything that leads us away from Jesus deserves only our disdain.

9 Benny Hinn Is My Uncle, but Prosperity Preaching Isn’t for Me

Growing up in the Hinn family empire was like belonging to some hybrid of the royal family and the mafia. Our lifestyle was lavish, our loyalty was enforced, and our version of the gospel was big business. Though Jesus Christ was still a part of our gospel, he was more of a magic genie than the King of Kings. Rubbing him the right way—by giving money and having enough faith—would unlock your spiritual inheritance. God’s goal was not his glory but our gain. His grace was not to set us free from sin but to make us rich. The abundant life he offered wasn’t eternal, it was now. We lived the prosperity gospel.

Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: Greg's Top Ten Picks of the Week!

From Muhammad's first "revelation" from Allah to his deathbed (from which he called down curses upon Jews and Christians), it's all here-told with extensive documentation from the sources that Muslims themselves consider most reliable about Muhammad. Spencer details Muhammad's development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in Paradise if they were killed in his cause. He explains how the Qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed-with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage. Spencer also gives the truth about Muhammad's convenient "revelations" justifying his own licentiousness; his joy in the brutal murders of his enemies; and above all, his clear marching orders to his followers to convert non-Muslims to Islam-or force them to live as inferiors under Islamic rule.  OREDER YOUR COPY NOW >>>

Alan Jacobs: Hating Your Neighbor Will Make You Dumb

An important category for Jacobs is the repugnant cultural other (RCO). “Everyone today seems to have an RCO, and everyone’s RCO is on social media somewhere.” Every cultural subgroup can identify some other subgroup as beyond the pale. The tribal instinct is deep: We are naturally drawn to those in the in-group, and we feel disgust at those in the out-group. “Anyone,” Jacobs argues, “who claims not to be shaped by such forces is almost certainly self-deceived. Human beings are not built to be indifferent to the waves and pulses of their social world.” Yet, like other universal human traits such as rage, panic, or lust, we should resist the lure of hating the RCO, as it inhibits real thinking. If you want to think well, says Jacobs, you “will have to practice patience and master fear.”

How Christianity Led to the Rise of Modern Science

A central tenet of the new atheism is that Christianity and reason are antithetical, and that throughout history Christians have held back progress in science. Atheist historian Dr. Richard Carrier has promoted similar views in his contributions to essay collections such as The Christian Delusion and Christianity Is Not Great . He suggests that, but for the rise of Christianity, the ancient Greeks would have enjoyed a scientific revolution so that the “Dark Ages” never would have happened. However, the truth is very different. The science of the ancient Greek pagans was intended to reinforce their ethical and philosophical positions, rather than to be an objective study of nature. Admittedly, when Christians came to develop their own science in the Middle Ages, they were not being objective either. For them, science was the study of God’s creation. But the metaphysical assumptions of Christianity, unlike those of the Greeks or even Muslims, turned out to be extremely conducive to uncovering true knowledge about nature. They weren’t trying to, but it was Christians who laid the foundations for modern science.

Article: If You Think Racism is Wrong, You Should be a Christian by Tim Stratton

I greatly appreciate the work of Tim Stratton of Free Thinking Ministries .  Stratton most often argues using syllogisms and this is  how I best understand arguments.  Further, he is able to put difficult concepts "on the lower shelf" for those who are struggling to understand an argument or who may be new to apologetics.  As I have said in the past, I highly recommend his work. In this featured article , Stratton puts forth and briefly defends the following argument: 1. If God does not exist, life is objectively purposeless. 2. If life is objectively purposeless, there exists no objective standard to which one ought to approximate. 3. Anti-racism is an objective standard to which one ought to approximate. 4. Therefore, life is not objectively purposeless. 5. Therefore, God exists. You can read the entire article here. We Always Have Something Good to Say

There will be times to say very little as we sit and weep with those who weep. But a time will come to speak. We don’t always have to say something good. But we do always have something good to say. The Top Reasons You Should Think About Apologetics

The statistics on how "modern individuals" think are clear, skepticism is at an all-time high and piggybacking along with that perspective is a profound sense of confusion. The culture is confused about what the church believes, and the church is confused about what culture believes. Far too often causing the two groups to either ignore, or talk passed one another. Part-and-parcel to this problem is the fact that far too many Christians do not know exactly what it is that they profess to believe to begin with. So in one sense, you can't blame the culture looking in to then likewise misrepresent and misunderstand the church. If Christians fail to articulate and affirm what it is exactly that they believe, why should the culture respond in any substantial way towards what they are saying?

Prayer for Healing--1: Two Confusions

Then, just as I was finishing my MDiv at American Christian Theological Seminary (yes, it was a charismatic seminary whose initials formed ACTS—thankfully, apologists John Warwick Montgomery and Walter Martin taught there), I was hired by John Wimber to be an associate pastor of a fast growing congregation called Calvary Chapel of Yorba Linda. While I was on staff at that church it became The Vineyard and the flagship of what is now the Vineyard movement. John Wimber’s perceived success at doing signs and wonders led to his teaching the popular course at Fuller Seminary, “Signs, Wonders, and Church Growth.” I left the Vineyard because of some doctrinal concerns (maybe a discussion for another time).

Open Letter to My Daughter About Her Body

The way you treat your body reveals more than your preferences; it reveals whom and what you worship. Pray that the Lord will make you known for your internal, imperishable qualities rather than your external appearance (1 Peter 3:3–4). Physical beauty should certainly not be scorned, as it is a gift to be stewarded from God, but it is not an end in itself. All the beauty we see in human and natural form should constantly remind us that we serve a delightfully creative and powerful God.

34
Five Ways Historic Christianity Relates Faith to Reason

Many people view faith and reason as being at odds with one another. For example, some differentiate faith from reason by asserting that faith merely involves hoping something is true, whereas reason involves affirming something to be true based upon justifying evidence . According to this model, faith is equivalent to wishful thinking and is thus incompatible with reason. But historic Christianity’s view of faith and reason is very different from this popular stereotypical definition.

Why Does God Allow Bad Things to Happen?

Evolution supposedly progresses by the death of the less fit and the reproduction of the most fit. So, if this the case, why should we help the old, sick, infirm, and disabled? Shouldn’t they be eliminated as less fit? After all, in the world of evolution the strong survive, and tough for you if you’re born weak or less fit. According to an evolutionist’s own worldview, how can death, disease, suffering, cancer, and disabilities really be “bad”? In nature, the weak and ill die off and the strong survive, passing on their good genes to the next generation—this is how evolution supposedly progresses. Death and weakness from disease and mutations is a must for “bad” genes to die out. So by what standard do evolutionists call these things bad? Certainly not by their own standard! To claim a standard for good and bad, they have to borrow from a different worldview—the biblical one—to define what good and bad even are.

Germans Are Welcoming Refugees as a Way to Honor Luther’s Legacy

So when Luther wrote his 95 Theses, he was driven by a few simple, democratic ideas—for example, that the grace of God is available to every believer and that everyone is equally free to access that grace through faith. Because they were already assured of God’s love through his unmerited grace, Christians were then to help others in need. According to Luther, “God does ...

5 Earth-Shattering Events Linked to the Bible

The Puritans found Harvard . On September 8, 1636, Puritans founded the first institution of higher learning in the American colonies, Harvard University. The purpose was to train pastors to serve their newly founded churches. According to the founders, “One of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches, when our present ministers shall lie in the dust.”

Last Chance U, Wheaton College, The Battle of Antietam, and Rich Mullins

Last Chance U. I became addicted to the NetFlix documentary series “ Last Chance U ,” about a junior college in Mississippi that gives football players who have made career-ending mistakes at major colleges a chance to get their lives and careers back on track. East Mississippi Community College has seen success on the football field, and some success at getting kids back into major college programs. A few former EMCC players have even ended up in the NFL. But I’ve now watched the entire series and I’ve come away feeling sad and frustrated. I think it’s great that some of these kids are getting second chances, or third chances, and clearly some of them are responding and taking advantage of these additional chances. However, the vast majority are not, and you do have to ask the question: At what cost? Cost to the taxpayers, cost to the vast majority of the kids who won’t go on to a four-year school, much less to the NFL, who will also end up without an education because of the time they spent on football rather than study. Now comes news that a player featured in the program, Isaiah Wright, has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing .

“Oxford so far is standing by the professor.” It hardly matters. Homophobia is forbidden by law in the UK and if only one student decides to file an official complaint at the University they are bound by law to act on it. If they don’t, and the student files a complaint with the police, Oxford will be viewed as an accomplice for not dealing with the situation while knowing the law was violated.
