Germans Are Welcoming Refugees as a Way to Honor Luther’s Legacy

So when Luther wrote his 95 Theses, he was driven by a few simple, democratic ideas—for example, that the grace of God is available to every believer and that everyone is equally free to access that grace through faith. Because they were already assured of God’s love through his unmerited grace, Christians were then to help others in need. According to Luther, “God does ...

How Atheism Fails To Explain A Beginning To The Universe

The beginning of our universe is evidently troubling for atheists judging by their responses. For a start philosophical reasoning shows that it is not possible to have an infinite regress of past events. Couple that with persuasive scientific evidence from cosmic expansion and the second law of thermodynamics, and we needn’t doubt that the universe had its finite beginning in the Big Bang.

Christmas is Christmas Because Jesus is God | Cold Case Christianity

There are many important religious dates that commemorate the significant role that historic religious leaders have played (did you know, for example, that December 23 rd  is the birthday of Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism?) But Jesus was more than an important leader and founder. He was more than a great thinker and teacher. Jesus taught His followers that He was God. That’s why Christmas is a celebration above and beyond other holy days celebrated by religious believers around the world.

Are Moral Truths Encoded in Our DNA?

How do we arrive at transcendent, objective moral truths like, “It’s never OK to torture babies for fun” or (my new favorite from a blog reader) “It’s never OK to torture non-believers just because you don’t like them?” From where do such commonly held moral notions come? Some people argue they are a part of our genetic wiring. As one friendly skeptic said recently, “We share 99.999% of our physical traits with our fellow humans . . . so why would our mental traits not be similarly shared?” Are moral truths simply part of our genetic coding? There are good reasons to reject such an explanation:

Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: Greg's Top Ten Picks of the Week!

From Muhammad's first "revelation" from Allah to his deathbed (from which he called down curses upon Jews and Christians), it's all here-told with extensive documentation from the sources that Muslims themselves consider most reliable about Muhammad. Spencer details Muhammad's development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in Paradise if they were killed in his cause. He explains how the Qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed-with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage. Spencer also gives the truth about Muhammad's convenient "revelations" justifying his own licentiousness; his joy in the brutal murders of his enemies; and above all, his clear marching orders to his followers to convert non-Muslims to Islam-or force them to live as inferiors under Islamic rule.  OREDER YOUR COPY NOW >>>

How to Quietly Hate Your Children

Of course, none of this is formulaic. Disciplining does not guarantee salvation. Just as the farmer needs God to send the rains and create life, so parents are dependent on God to save souls. We can teach our children to say please and to share, but we cannot change their hearts. We cannot bring them from life to death. All we can do is bring our faithfulness, believing in faith that God will not fail to bring his.

Reasons To Believe : What Best Accounts for Our Sense of Morality?

I have heard several apologists I deeply respect say that they believe an apologetic from morality or an apologetic of goodness and beauty are some of the best ones available. Why is this true? I believe it’s true because we are all relational beings and seem to have an innate sense of right and wrong, whereas we may not all be attracted to logical arguments about the beginning and fine-tuning of the universe. Many of us care deeply about things we call ethics and morals.

We Always Have Something Good to Say

There will be times to say very little as we sit and weep with those who weep. But a time will come to speak. We don’t always have to say something good. But we do always have something good to say. Even in the darkest of days, even in the deepest of valleys, even to the most recalcitrant of sinners, we have hope to speak.

What Are the Most Important Questions?

Since God wants us to know him, honor him, trust him, obey him, love him, and live with him forever, how are you doing? How have you grown in your knowledge of him? How often do you honor the Lord and give him thanks? Do you find comfort in his faithfulness? Is your life characterized by obedience to God’s Word? Are you trusting in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for the forgiveness of your sins? Do you draw near to him and desire him? All praise to God that he never changes and that he is near to those who call upon him in faith. Draw near to God today and forever grow in your enjoyment of him.

Apologetics Is Not Saying You’re Sorry

As a professor of Christian Apologetics at Biola University, I (Sean) help prepare students to answer tough questions raised against the Christian faith. One day someone from outside the Biola academic community called our university to ask why we offer classes on apologizing for the faith. She thought apologetics meant teaching students to say they were sorry for their beliefs! While her question was well intentioned, she didn’t grasp the nature of apologetics and its role in the Christian life. Christians certainly should apologize for their faith , but not in the way she had in mind.

Open Letter to My Daughter About Her Body

The way you treat your body reveals more than your preferences; it reveals whom and what you worship. Pray that the Lord will make you known for your internal, imperishable qualities rather than your external appearance (1 Peter 3:3–4). Physical beauty should certainly not be scorned, as it is a gift to be stewarded from God, but it is not an end in itself. All the beauty we see in human and natural form should constantly remind us that we serve a delightfully creative and powerful God.

Why Does God Allow Bad Things to Happen?

Evolution supposedly progresses by the death of the less fit and the reproduction of the most fit. So, if this the case, why should we help the old, sick, infirm, and disabled? Shouldn’t they be eliminated as less fit? After all, in the world of evolution the strong survive, and tough for you if you’re born weak or less fit. According to an evolutionist’s own worldview, how can death, disease, suffering, cancer, and disabilities really be “bad”? In nature, the weak and ill die off and the strong survive, passing on their good genes to the next generation—this is how evolution supposedly progresses. Death and weakness from disease and mutations is a must for “bad” genes to die out. So by what standard do evolutionists call these things bad? Certainly not by their own standard! To claim a standard for good and bad, they have to borrow from a different worldview—the biblical one—to define what good and bad even are.

Philippians 1:12–14: Conquer Fear by Seeing God

The result? Time spent on Facebook was “tightly linked” to poor physical and psychological health, as well as lower overall satisfaction with life. Conversely, time spent in real-world, face-to-face interaction correlated with better health both mentally and physically.

5 Earth-Shattering Events Linked to the Bible

The Puritans found Harvard . On September 8, 1636, Puritans founded the first institution of higher learning in the American colonies, Harvard University. The purpose was to train pastors to serve their newly founded churches. According to the founders, “One of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches, when our present ministers shall lie in the dust.”

Happiness Is Not Hidden in Marriage

No one in Christ ever has to wait for joy. We may have to wait for a husband or a wife, or for a job, or for physical healing or relief, or for reconciliation with family members or friends. We may have to wait for all those things and a thousand more — with no guarantee that any of those things will ever come to us in this life. But the sinless Son of God bled and died to ensure that you and I never have to wait for happiness.

Last Chance U, Wheaton College, The Battle of Antietam, and Rich Mullins

Last Chance U. I became addicted to the NetFlix documentary series “ Last Chance U ,” about a junior college in Mississippi that gives football players who have made career-ending mistakes at major colleges a chance to get their lives and careers back on track. East Mississippi Community College has seen success on the football field, and some success at getting kids back into major college programs. A few former EMCC players have even ended up in the NFL. But I’ve now watched the entire series and I’ve come away feeling sad and frustrated. I think it’s great that some of these kids are getting second chances, or third chances, and clearly some of them are responding and taking advantage of these additional chances. However, the vast majority are not, and you do have to ask the question: At what cost? Cost to the taxpayers, cost to the vast majority of the kids who won’t go on to a four-year school, much less to the NFL, who will also end up without an education because of the time they spent on football rather than study. Now comes news that a player featured in the program, Isaiah Wright, has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing .

The Point: Engage and Debate? Are You Kidding?

“Oxford so far is standing by the professor.” It hardly matters. Homophobia is forbidden by law in the UK and if only one student decides to file an official complaint at the University they are bound by law to act on it. If they don’t, and the student files a complaint with the police, Oxford will be viewed as an accomplice for not dealing with the situation while knowing the law was violated.
