The Evidence for Christianity Doesn't "Tell" Us Anything

These authors also wrote their stories as though there was little room for negotiation; the science has apparently spoken definitively without any room for controversy. But, of course, there is a great deal of controversy related to many of these topics. Why? Because the evidence and science doesn’t really “say” anything. Instead, jurors and scientists do all the talking.

God Does Exist: Applied Apologetics: The Christian World View: Rational Predispositions That Support Truth

The Difference Between Judas and Peter

The intercession of our Great High Priest is the foundation for our confidence when it comes to our perseverance. It also helps us make sense of the accounts of Peter and Judas, two of Jesus’ disciples who experienced a serious fall. One disciple’s fall away from Christ is seen as a final and full work of apostasy, whereas the other disciple’s fall is not final and full because he is restored. And we see that their crime against Christ was very similar. Judas betrayed Jesus. And that same night, Peter denied Christ.

5 Frequently Abused Verses: How Easy Is Salvation?

send to a friend #26  Posted by Bryan Kendrick  |  Monday, September 21, 2015 at 11:40 AM Jerry, I will pray for you. You have a story that I am sure a ton of people share with you. The teaching of Law-Gospel-Law has hurt more people than we could ever imagine. The law has broken me and you, by it we know that we are completely short of God's standard of righteousness and utterly destitute without the finished work of Christ on the Cross. Friend, it is not possible for the elect to enter into damnation. The elect will be saved, because it is God who adds to the church. "For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

The Good News of the Empty Cup

The Old Testament provides insight into why our Lord dreaded the cup. Both Isaiah and Jeremiah describe it as the cup of God’s wrath (Isa. 51:17, Jer. 25:15). Another poignant passage is Psalm 75. The psalm speaks about the wicked who “raise the horn” in rebellion to God. “Raising the horn” could be a reference to the powerful thrust of an ox’s horn, lifting its power against the Lord. More likely, though, it describes the ram’s horn that would be lifted in battle. Another psalm tells us “the kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his Anointed One” (Ps. 2:2). The picture is clear: the wicked use their strength to rebel against their Maker.

Loving the Foreigner

This subject has been challenging me greatly in the past few weeks. I want to welcome the foreigner and help them in their time of need asa the Bible says to do. On the other hand, there is a great risk to our country in the threat of terrorism. How do we balance welcoming the foreigner with putting our citizens in risk of death because we were generous in providing assistance?

As you can see from these pictures , NL Studio’s “desk studio bed” even has a little TV mounted at bed-level, so you can watch a little Netflix while you doze off. And, perhaps the best feature, is a retractable wall that makes your napping completely hidden from office guest. What could possibly go wrong ?

Origin of Life Conundrums Require A Divine Designer | Cold Case Christianity

In this brief blog post (excerpted from God’s Crime Scene ), I’ve only described two of the many “chicken and egg” problems naturalists must consider and explain as they account for the origin of life in the universe. Biological systems are replete with irreducibly complex conundrums such as these, and the best explanation for this kind of complexity is intelligent interaction. A supernatural designer can overcome the “chicken and egg” conundrums we’ve described, and a Divine Designer of this nature remains the best inference from the evidence. For a much more thorough description of this evidence, please refer to God’s Crime Scene , Chapter Three – The Origin of Life: Does the Text Require an Author?

14 The Atheist Who Didn't Exist

Yet when one pokes at popular atheism, many of the arguments used to prop it up quickly unravel. The Atheist Who Didn't Exist is designed to expose some of the loose threads on the cardigan of atheism, tug a little, and see what happens. Blending humour with serious thought, Andy Bannister helps the reader question everything, assume nothing and, above all, recognise lazy scepticism and bad arguments. Be an atheist by all means: but do be a thought-through one.

The Preacher’s Neglected Tool

It’s important not to overreact to exemplary preaching; the Bible is full of examples. But the Christian is primarily exhorted to grow to be like Christ, not to be like Abraham or Moses or whomever. Other biblical characters can be appealed to as exemplars of faith when it’s clear from their relationship to Christ in what way they are. For instance, Hebrews 11 clearly portrays Old Testament heroes as models of faith and courage, but it also makes the source of our faith “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (12:2). Ultimately, the writer sees the heroes of faith as pointing us to Christ: we are to imitate their example, but the power to do so only comes by looking to Jesus.

How to Help Friends Escape the Prosperity Gospel

So begins a new week of episodes with John Piper. Thanks for listening. Pastor John, we have an email from listener named Kai Tham: “Pastor John, how do you practically and lovingly lead your loved ones who are steeped in the prosperity gospel all their lives, back to the true gospel? I come from Malaysia and Singapore, places immersed in prosperity gospel theology. I understand that in 2 Timothy, Paul says there will come such days as these, where people will gather themselves teachers that suit their own passions. But what if these are your close friends and family whom you love so much? How do you teach or love or rebuke or reprove them? I’m training for ministry in Melbourne. One day I will go back to Singapore, God willing, to preach and pastor there. I know as Paul advised I should preach in every season, being ready to rebuke, reprove and exhort. What does this look like in a culture so steeped in the prosperity gospel?”

Finding a Level Head in a Hectic World

Sober judgment has always been in high demand, but now the supply is at record lows. In the Information Age, we have access like never before to the stuff that makes for high IQ, but raw intellect alone is prone to extremes and debilitating imbalances when wielded without the great stabilizer of emotional intelligence (EQ). Call it wisdom, level-headedness, or just sanctified common sense — the biblical attribute of “sober-mindedness” is at a premium. Which should get our attention when such a thing is central to both a healthy Christian church and the healthy Christian walk.

Your Child Is Your Neighbor

On the surface, this statement appears true. When we think of “parenting passages” we typically think of those that explicitly mention parents, children, authority, and instruction: Deuteronomy 6, the fifth commandment in Exodus 20, spare the rod and spoil the child, train up a child in the way he should go, children obey your parents in the Lord, and a smattering of other verses. We may even throw in the example of the Prodigal Son or the parenting woes of the patriarchs for good measure. But other than these, few passages mention the parent-child relationship specifically, leading many to conclude that, for the most part, God must leave us to figure out this parenting thing on our own. An understandable conclusion.

How Becoming a Parent Will Change Your Faith

The seismic wave of the spiritually profound time when a child is born will reverberate throughout eternity. And, if time is taken to pause and sink into it, the impact it can have on a new parent’s faith can be just as powerful. Bringing a new life into this world is so much more than learning to change diapers and survive on no sleep. It can be a way to draw closer to God, more than ever before thought possible.

The Most Important Habits of Leaders

Over the years of leading teams and organizations, when the interns would show up the first day, they would sit in my office and say, “Give us the elementary essence of what leadership is.” That was my answer, H3: Humble, Hungry, Hustle. In many ways, this is the three-legged stool you have to stand on in order to create a good leadership foundation. Humble meaning it’s not about me; Hungry meaning I’m never there, I never arrive; and Hustle meaning I’ve got to be working my guts out to get to the to finish line.

CCCU: Christian Colleges that Permit Professors in Same-Sex Marriages Resign Membership

The Board completed its consultative process in early September, having spoken to all but one member president, due to scheduling constraints. In these conversations, many member presidents expressed their initial observations, rather than settled opinions on this issue, and many had questions about the CCCU’s different associational categories. In general, however, based on the current categories of association available, approximately 75 percent of members agreed in full or in principle with the Board’s recommendation to consider moving EMU and Goshen to non-member affiliate status. Nearly 20 percent of the member presidents felt that EMU and Goshen should continue in full membership, while less than 25 percent did not support either member or affiliate status. These numbers reflect that some presidents felt comfortable with more than one option.

5 good reasons to read the entire Bible every year

During my lengthier-than-I-first-intended career as a seminary student, I followed the same practice and after a few years, I had read through the Bible several times. The results have been massively helpful for both my walk with the Lord and the teaching and preaching ministry he has given me. More recently, comments by two of my ministry heroes, John Piper and R. C. Sproul, have encouraged me to continue this approach to Bible intake. Piper: “When all your favorite preachers are gone, and their books are forgotten, you will have your Bible. Master it.” And then, there are these manly words from Dr. Sproul: “I’ll retire when they pry my cold, dead fingers off my Bible.” Words like those encourage me to stay saturated in God’s Word. Reading through it perennially is one means of accomplishing that.

Jesus’ Flipping Tables Isn’t an Excuse for Your Online Rants

I have to ardently disagree with the notion that Jesus was either acting violently or out of anger. I've written about this before in a post titled "The Time Jesus Supposedly Lost His Temper" ( ). Suffice it to say, Jesus was performing a calculated and clear-headed prophetic act. The notion that he was throwing a tantrum is really us imposing something on the text, most likely to justify our own anger and outbursts (as Jesse's article suggests). However, once we see Jesus' actions in the temple for what they truly are, and not what we would have them to be, we quickly lose any justification that we might have had for our own fits of rage, even those that happen online.

My Life Ended When I Got Married

That title certainly caught my attention! That is exactly how I felt shortly after my honeymoon! I was 37 when I married for the first time. Plenty of years to build in a lot of self-centered attitudes and desires. I married a widow with 3 children under the age of 11. Being a licensed social worker, I thought, “this won’t be a difficult transition to make. I’ve read the books on family dynamics and life-span development! What could go wrong with taking on an instant family and providing them with a warm, loving Christian home?” HA! Was I in for a huge awakening! Suddenly, my “man cave/bachelor pad” of a home became invaded with my new children and their friends, a wife that wanted to change, rearrange and throw out my “stuff”! I knew that she would need to make it her home, too, but…so fast?! I needed time to adjust to all of these PEOPLE and their THINGS coming into MY house! New paint colors, a new bedspread with flowers, new curtains, new kitchen, and the list goes on! Now, after 20 years of marriage, I can easily see how God brought my wife into my life, at the right time, to help me understand the areas in my life that desperately needed changing.

Basics for Reading the Bible

After briefly introducing the hostile context in 1 Peter, John Piper lays out several pivotal principles for reading and understanding the Bible. The meaning of “meaning” is massive and elusive. Before we can agree on what a verse or chapter of the Bible means, we have to define our terms and linger over several key texts.

When Forgiveness Isn’t Enough

@steve, i love that you addressed the questions that i had in your comment. i think we are all too often more interested in protecting ourselves than in practicing what we say we believe. i also think there are those out there who are more interested in themselves and in damaging people around them than reconciling. it takes a lot of discernment and wisdom to decide which is going on in each specific situation. when the person who is offending consistently chooses pride and continues to lash out hurts, it might be time to... be open yourself to reconciliation... if and when they are repentant.

Can We Be Good Without God?

But does it work? Not really. First, it quickly leads to some curious problems. Suppose we have four people sitting in front of us: a professor of medicine who is working on a cure for cancer, a leading philanthropist who gives millions to charity, a world famous politician about to solve the Middle East crisis and finally, an unemployed layabout. The professor has a failing heart, the philanthropist two dodgy kidneys, and the politician’s liver is waving a white flag. The layabout is perfectly healthy. Could we therefore euthanize him (we would anaesthetize him first, so it’s painless) and use his parts to repair the other three? Wouldn’t that result in much greater happiness? Most people would balk at the suggestion.

How To Lose Your Zeal for Christ

Major in speculative religion . Speculative religion is religion whose primary concern is that which is theoretical or conjectural. Look to the pastoral epistles and you will often find Paul warning Timothy and Titus that they must avoid anything like this—anything vain and unprofitable, anything obsessed with fables and genealogies (see 1 Timothy 4:2, 2 Timothy 2:14, Titus 3:9, etc). Christianity is meant to be an experiential religion, one that is meant to reach the heart and the will and to work itself out in action. “Christian faith begins with an experiential renovation of the heart and progresses by an experiential relationship that impacts all of life.”

In a lengthy statement , the council reiterated its adherence to the historic Christian view of marriage as between a man and a woman, but it acknowledged a lack of “clarity, purpose, and common understanding” regarding the council’s various associational categories. In response, the board appointed a task force to review the council’s categories and examine how to remain “rooted in historic Christianity” and “fruitfully engage with other institutions seeking to advance the cause of Christian higher education or religious freedom.”

4 of Pope Francis’s Most Challenging Ideas

Evangelization can be a way to unite our hopes, concerns, ideals and even utopian visions. We believe this and we make it our cry. I have already said that, “in our world, especially in some countries, different forms of war and conflict are re-emerging, yet we Christians remain steadfast in our intention to respect others, to heal wounds, to build bridges, to strengthen relationships and to ‘bear one another’s burdens’. The desire for unity involves the delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing, the conviction that we have an immense treasure to share, one which grows stronger from being shared, and becomes ever more sensitive to the needs of others.

Five Suggestions for Christians in the Midst of the Sexual Revolution

3. Do not neglect singles. The sexual revolution rests on two mutually exclusive propositions: sex has no meaning and that meaning must be expressed. On the one hand, we are told that there is no “essence” to sexuality, nothing inherent in sexual activity that gives it a natural shape or meaning. And yet, we are told that the worst thing we can do to anyone is repress their sexual expression. So sex is nothing and everything at the same time. Sex is essential to our identity, but the essence of sex is arbitrary. Into this mess, the church can speak a better way. Sex is a divine gift, but it does not define us.  The church must grow as a place of welcome, hospitality, and purpose for single people. We must show that even if the world thinks there is something cruel and unusual about celibacy, Christians know that the fullest, most deeply human existence is not inimical to this path. After all, we worship a single man who never had sexual intercourse.

My Dad, the Sinner and Saint

Six years later, my dad was pursuing his third affair. Each lasted a few months. I could tell when he was cheating by how little he was around and how much his personality changed. The timing was always terrible. Each major event in my life—graduating high school, going to college, and my wedding day—felt tainted by his infidelity. I didn’t know what triggered him to leave and come back, he and my mom returning to normal. During those times, my dad was his old self: affectionate, fun, generous, and devoting himself to God in prayer and Bible study. I didn’t know if he apologized to my mom and made things right again, but he had never apologized to me and my two sisters.
