Study: Do people think pets go to heaven? | Uncommon Descent

The first study to systematically explore beliefs about animal afterlife by asking a national sample of Americans has been published in the journal Anthrozoös. It investigated how demographic categories can have a considerable influence on beliefs about animal afterlife. With around 70% of US households owning pets, the study marks a new insight into a largely unexplored area of American spirituality.

4 Attack Helicopter Parents

In a study published in the journal Collabra, researchers found that our perception of how much danger unsupervised children are in depends on our feelings about the parents. When participants were told that parents left their child alone because of an emergency, they downplayed the danger to the child. But when they were told the parent left in order to relax or go see a lover, participants said the child was in far greater danger.

5 Man and Michelangelo’s 'David'

More than any other work of art, except perhaps Michelangelo’s "The Creation of Adam" on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the “David” statue captures the image and essence of Man. Confident, determined, physically beautiful and strong, called to a noble purpose: to do battle with evil in the service of the God in Whose image we are made.

Why Faith and Finance are Compatible | The Stream

When it comes to the world of finance, Christians often hear that certain words should never be mentioned together in polite company: God and profit; Christian and capital; faith and finance. Indeed, Christians enter into a kind of paranoia when asked to adopt positions that seem to question the abyss between God and mammon.  Samuel Gregg ’s new book, For God and Profit: How Banking and Finance Can Serve the Common Good, is an excellent step toward establishing much-needed balance in the debate.

Why Are You A Christian? (Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast #16) | Cold Case Christianity

In this episode of the Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast, J. Warner asks an important question: If you’re a Christian, why is this the case? How we answer this question is critically important given the growingly hostile nature of our culture related to classical Christianity. J. Warner reviews some of the answers he’s been given as he travels the country, and offers an evidential response of his own. (For more information, visit ).

The Inexplicable Fine-Tuning of the Foundational Forces in Our Universe

The appearance of fine-tuning in our universe has been observed by theists and atheists alike. Even physicist Paul Davies (who is agnostic when it comes to the notion of a Divine Designer) readily stipulates, “Everyone agrees that the universe looks as if it was designed for life.” Oxford philosopher John Leslie agrees: “it looks as if our universe is spectacularly ‘fine-tuned for life’. By this I mean only that it looks as if small changes in this universe’s basic features would have made life’s evolution impossible.” The foundational “laws of nature” are amazingly fine-tuned; there is very little room for alteration. The smallest modifications of these laws would completely destroy the possibility of life in the universe. Theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking says the laws of physics “appear fine-tuned in the sense that if they were altered by only modest amounts, the universe would be qualitatively different, and in many cases unsuitable for the development of life…The emergence of the complex structures capable of supporting intelligent observers seems to be very fragile.

The Biggest Temple in Town

How much am I building my life around my favorite team and its games, and what important things in life are suffering because of this growing priority? Am I getting so attached to this team and to this season that I’m neglecting much more important realities like family, friends, work, studies, and most significantly the stirring of my heart for Jesus? Am I closer to him because of sports, or are the games subtly moving me away by eclipsing him in my heart?

Struck Down, But Not Destroyed

Moreover, we have an enemy who specializes in sucker punches. He schemes how he will execute, watching for opportune times, hitting when he thinks it will connect with force. Nothing touches us apart from the sovereign sanction of the Lord. The Lord uses it for his purposes and for our good. But there’s a reason he tells us to remain fully clothed in his armor. Forces are arrayed against us, shooting fiery arrows. There are times we will get hit.

What Does TV Say About Sex?

Our words often both reflect and affect our hearts, and that seems to be the case particularly when it comes to sex. If we’re imagining it, joking about it, or crudely discussing it, we’re headed in the wrong direction. Our heart is creeping closer to sin, not fleeing in the opposite direction. Crude sexual talk, humor, innuendo, and flirtation lower our defenses and heighten our temptation. Paul’s charge is clear: Don’t do it. And don’t even talk about doing it.

6 Ways to Help a Grieving Friend

My experience of grief shaped me in profound ways that I am still discovering, but one of the things that has come most clearly out my grief is the desire to see others grieved with well. When comforting a grieving friend, everyone has good intentions. Unfortunately, those good intentions often don’t translate to loving, helpful action. And when you’re grieving, you don’t have the energy to see through to good intentions.

Life-Risking Courage in the Cause of Love

Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:11–16)

An Interview with Marine and Apologist Jason Ladd

I've been reading and listening to Ravi Zacharias for years now. Frank Turek is super engaged with our culture and has an active presence speaking to our youth in the universities. Dinesh D'Souza--thought widely know now for his political commentary--skillfully lays out arguments for the faith. And I'm becoming a huge fan of Os Guinness.

'Snowden' Isn't Great, But It Is Important

The narrative of Edward Snowden may not be new, but it is complex. My wife put it this way on the car ride home: “That’s an important story. I didn’t follow it when it happened, and I never saw the documentary on it. But if you put Joseph Gordon Levitt and Shailene Woodley on the big screen, a lot of people are going to pay attention.”

God Doesn't Want Perfection. He Wants Something Better

It took them a lifetime, but the great poets and saints of the past were determined to live into "all the days ordained for them." Their lives still impact the world not because they were historical figures that conquered lands and ruled monarchies. We remember them because they lived lives of collected moments.

Is Christianity a Copycat Religion?

Last night, I attended the first night of the two-day reTHINK student apologetics conference put on by Stand to Reason . Sean McDowell gave an incredible presentation answering the question, “Is Christianity a copycat religion?” This argument has resurfaced today on the internet and is challenging many Christians. It becomes hard to defend against attacks when we don’t know the facts behind this challenge. Now, I want to share the five reasons that Sean gave of how the mystery religions did not influence Christianity. (These reasons come directly from Sean McDowell’s presentation.)

Case-Making 101: Do Worldviews Matter?

“They need to know that everyone embraces one philosophy or another-a worldview that defines his or her conception of the world, of reality, and of human life. These beliefs are woven into movies-often in subtle ways that viewers miss. That is why it’s so important that we teach our kids how to find the worldview message in every film.”

Are Christianity and Darwinism Compatible? One Biologist Says No.

I find the fossil evidence very underwhelming for a common ancestor. In the Cambrian we find all the contemporary phyla of major groups appear, even some that have since gone extinct. In pre-Cambrian rocks, there are few fossils and nothing of the complexity found in the Cambrian. Your rabbit example isn’t compelling, for there are creatures of similar complexity in the Cambrian. Yet we don’t see their predecessors. I’ve seen some argue that the predecessors were all soft bodied and this is why there are so few. I find that highly implausible. One, there would still be transitional forms leading up to the Cambrian and two, there are many cases within the Cambrian of soft bodied creatures that we have fossils for. So, I do find the fossil evidence a highly contentious issue, even if the majority of scientists think it is consistent with evolution. I personally think there is extreme bias on this topic.

Greg Bahnsen: His Commanding Influence

Have You Tasted God Himself?

Oh, how glad I would be if I could be of a little service to the souls of some of God’s people the way Jonathan Edwards has been to me. Neither he nor I is an inspired spokesmen of God, as the apostles were. But we are, with them, in some measure, “stewards of the mysteries of God” (1 Corinthians 4:1). These stewards were household managers of the owners’ resources, handling them in a way that brought benefit to the members of the house.

Case-Making 101: Why Do We Need Christian Case-Makers?

Five Suggestions for Christians in the Midst of the Sexual Revolution

Hardly a week goes by without another social media parade marching by in celebration of the sexual revolution. Bruce Jenner, Caitlyn Jenner, Kim Davis, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Obergefell and on and on –the talk of sex is everywhere (and not a drop you should drink). It’s almost impossible to turn on the tv or scroll through your phone or open the paper (what are those?) without being bombarded by pictures and stories and headlines that all have to do with sex–not just sensuality (which would be bad enough), but the castigation of those who uphold traditional sexual boundaries and the applauding of every permutation of sexual activity (“ infinite diversity in infinite combinations ” as one political fundraising letter put it).

Donald Trump Calls for Permanently Banning Taxpayer Funding of Abortions |

The first order of business for Clinton and her friends at the abortion company is to force Americans to pay for abortions with their tax dollars by attempting to overturn the Hyde Amendment, which has protected Americans from funding most all abortions since the late 1970s. Upheld by the Supreme Court, the Hyde Amendment is now a target of abortion advocates who have moved from pro-choice to pro-abortion — forcing Americans not only to accept unlimited abortions before birth but to pay for them.

Correcting four myths about the history of the Crusades

The verdict seems unanimous. From presidential speeches to role-playing games, the crusades are depicted as a deplorably violent episode in which thuggish Westerners trundled off, unprovoked, to murder and pillage peace-loving, sophisticated Muslims, laying down patterns of outrageous oppression that would be repeated throughout subsequent history. In many corners of the Western world today, this view is too commonplace and apparently obvious even to be challenged.

Worship the State - or Else: How Should the Church Respond?

It’s a right Americans have protected, albeit imperfectly, since our founding. But now, this right is being trampled on, by judges, mayors, and college administrators. Astonishingly—for America—we are now going a step further: We are, in effect, facing a demand that citizens worship false gods—or pay a high price.

Stem Cell Research—Lifesaving Alternatives

Given these advances, it’s no wonder Ian Wilmut, who cloned Dolly the sheep in 1996, has abandoned using embryonic stem cells in his research. Likewise, Bernadine Healy, former director of the National Institutes of Health (USA), pronounced embryonic stem cell research “obsolete” and pointed out its dangers, such as an embryonic stem cell experiment that caused tumors in a patient. Even President Obama has cautioned, “The full promise of [embryonic] stem cell research remains unknown.”

The Dictatorship of Relativism Comes to Campus

The quintessential illustration of the authoritarian and fundamentalist idea of truth came from a Wallace Stevens poem we read in class called “Dance of the Macabre Mice.” Stevens writes sarcastically about an equestrian statue of some military hero holding an outstretched sword. He depicts the equestrian statue not as heroic and glorious but as militaristic and oppressive. Mice crawl all over the statue and then dance “out to the tip of Monsieur’s sword.” They are light-footed and victorious in their battle with the dead equestrian hero. “What a beautiful tableau,” the poem declares with archness and irony, “The arm of bronze outstretched against all evil!” It mocks not just the idea of heroism but the very idea of goodness and evil.

3 Lessons from Netflix’s Adaptation of ‘The Little Prince’

The story also offers moments of allegory; in fact, some argue the entire narrative is an allegory. For example, when the Little Prince is on his way to earth, he meets a myriad of characters, all of them portraits of the consuming and hindering effects of hubris. He meets a king who claims to rule over all with absolute power; he exercises his power over the sun by ordering it to set . . . . but only at sunset. The Little Prince is not fooled, for he sees the king’s “power” is no more than a farce. He’s trying to make himself seem important, but his significance is a vapor.

Find a Friend to Wound You

And of course, friends must be more than this — after all, we aren’t Pavlovian puppies to be shocked every day. But in a world of political correctness and hyper-sensitivity to criticism, such friends with backbones are nearly as extinct as they are unwelcomed — even within the church.

National Anthem Protests Are Spreading Across NFL, High School and College Teams

I truly respect our players wanting to speak out and change their community. And they're moving from protest to progress and trying to make things happen in communities … I think where they're moving and how they're moving there is very productive and we're going to encourage that.

The Stuff We All Agree on When It Comes to Origins | Cold Case Christianity

I get the chance to speak around the country and talk about how we, as Christians, assemble circumstantial evidence related to the reliability of the Gospels and the existence of God . As a result, I meet all kinds of Christians who hold a variety of views related to the Genesis creation account. Many are “Literal Day” creationists, while others lean toward some version of “Gap Theory”, “Day-Age Creation Theory”, “Creation Revelation Theory”, “Progressive Creation Theory”, “Genesis Creation Day Theory” or “Genesis Literary Theory” Creationism. Some believe that the universe is very young, others that it is very old. Some believe that God created everything in the form we see it in today (as the result of some form of “instantaneous” creation); others that God shaped His creation through some process of progressive interaction. When you ask these folks about the Bible, all of them will tell you that they believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God. All will agree that the Bible is the final authority. All will tell you that they believe what the Bible teaches. Christians simply disagree on how to interpret the first book of Moses.

Do You Hate to Wait?

It would be so much easier if we could just be thankful, instead of faithful. In moments of waiting, the biblical definition of faith becomes annoyingly ethereal: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Can it be the conviction that God should bless me abundantly and immediately when I want something really badly? I vote for that definition of faith. . . . But thank the Lord that that is not the case. Let us praise Jesus that Paul Maxwell doesn’t get what he wants when he wants it.

No, We Aren't Engaged in a 'Holy' War with ISIS

In light of the above, we need to get past this tendency to identify the West with ancient Israel as the people of God. We are not the weak and powerless underdog going up outgunned and outmanned against a mighty empire in the “land of giants”—we are the powerhouse today.
