What’s All This ‘Gospel-Centered’ Talk About?

Dating can be truly enjoyed if we go into every evening out with a heart-sense of the gospel. If we know we are accepted and approved in Jesus, acceptance and approval by the person sitting across the table loses its ominous significance. If we know God delights in us with invincible favor and love, dates that go poorly will disappoint but not crush us. If we know that no matter what happens in a relationship we will always have Christ, and he is everything, then we are freed from having our mood dictated by dating success. And even if dates go well with someone early on, it's only a matter of time before a boyfriend or girlfriend (or spouse) will disappoint us and let us down. There's only one who never lets us down.

3 Challenge: God Can’t Be Scientifically Quantified - Stand to Reason Blog

Since that leads to absurdity, perhaps the intention is logical possibility. If it is not logically possible to scientifically quantify something, it does not exist. But here there is no support for the assertion that God is logically beyond scientific quantification. In fact, the opposite is true. Among "qualities" that may be quantified the author lists "capabilities." God certainly has qualities that are capabilities. He is omnipotent (capable of any action that is not a logical impossibility), omniscient (capable of maintaining belief in all true propositions), wholly just (capable of executing judgment to the right in every and all instances), wholly loving (capable of maintaining an attitude of love in every and all instances, even those including great hostility). Science, with the help of logic and philosophy, can even test some of these. The cosmological argument is a proof for the existence of God that depending on its form may use as support for its second premise ("The universe began to exist") either science or philosophy, but scientists have claimed to have discovered the beginning of the universe through "scientifically quantified" means.

Audacity: Ray Comfort's First Scripted Short Film

Ray Comfort : For the most part, homosexuality has been embraced as morally acceptable in contemporary culture. Sexual sin was once frowned upon, but in time, it’s become accepted as the norm by our sinful world. As Christians, we’ve come to terms with fornication and adultery but we bristle at the thought of homosexuality gaining a similar foothold, so we put up a battle. We have concern that fornicators will not enter Heaven, but that concern has waned for homosexuals. Instead, we are more disturbed that they are destroying the fabric of our Judeo-Christian society. “Audacity” puts the focus where it should be. Author Joe Dallas rightly said, “Our response should show interest and concern, two qualities the church has rarely shown when dealing with homosexuality. We must admit we have mishandled the issue in many ways: we have veered between ignoring the problem to becoming obsessed with it, we have made hasty and false generalizations at times about homosexuals themselves, and we have shown a tremendous zeal for defeating the political goals of gays while showing less concern for their eternal well-being.

God's Sufficient Word, Part 2

send to a friend #1  Posted by P B  |  Monday, September 15, 2014at 8:41 AM There have been times that a single verse has comforted me. Other times where scripture has cut through the obfuscating fog that always frustratingly justifies sin, causing me to go " Oh! as the the deception that made something look good that wasn't, vaporized. This is a good article and its so true that often the fake stuff only leaves us more thirsty in our particular desert than before. However, currently in my life I find myself lost in a deeper than usual fog bank, having taken several large wrong turns. Wrong turns that no doubt resulted from both unseen and addressed sin, but also from scriptural ignorance. Its not that I haven't read lots of the bible; I know quite a lot of scripture. But somehow, I lack scriptural understanding, or a truly biblical worldview, or perhaps a biblical worldview in my life is still largely dwarfed by all the flotsam and jetsam of unbiblical beliefs.

Read Slowly to Benefit Your Brain and Cut Stress

I've always been a reader, but the past 10 years or so, my usual 3-4 books a week have disappeared, reading more fragmented/periodicals, reading much less. The new reading technologies are bringing me back up--I will listen to an audio book loaded on my smartphone while doing housework or driving, and I just got my first Kindle, which I never thought I would enjoy--but I love it. Much to my surprise, I find reading on the Kindle perhaps more immersive than the printed book (and I LOVE printed books!). There is no..disruption of turning the page, etc. So, as much as I thought I was a Luddite, I am all for the new technologies as they have increased my reading considerably.

Peter says to us, "Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts, which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that . . . they may on account of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation" (1 Pet. 2:11). When unbelievers scrutinize your life, what do they see? Does your righteousness testify of God's saving and sanctifying grace?

Platt Commissioned by Brook Hills in Final Sunday as Senior Pastor

Sniffles could be heard and reddened eyes could be seen throughout the auditorium as Platt preached from 1 Corinthians 15 on three reasons to hold fast to the gospel with radical faith . Even though the message may have been familiar to anyone who knows Platt’s preaching and bestselling books, the occasion lent special urgency and import to his summary of the message that transformed Brook Hills and shook up evangelical churches around the world. Praying that his work has not been in vain, Platt urged Brook Hills to resist “comfortable, casual, cultural Christianity, because that’s not Christianity.” He reminded the church of 1 billion people—many of them Christians—living in desperate poverty and billions more who do not believe or even know the gospel of Jesus.

Grace to You

A wedding was a major social event in first-century Palestine, and the ensuing celebration could last as long as a week. It marked the culmination of the betrothal period, which often lasted for several months. The couple was considered legally man and wife during their betrothal period. They did not, however, live together or consummate the marriage during that time (cf. Matt. 1:18). On the night of the ceremony, the groom and his friends would go to the bride’s house. They would then escort her and her attendants to the groom’s house, where the ceremony and banquet would be held.

When Leaders Fail Us

The Bible is full of leaders who missed the mark. In some sense, the human experience presented in Scripture reminds us that we never suffer in isolation. We follow in a long line of sinners, a long line of people who have been sinned against, and a long line of redeemed people. Abraham put his wife in danger by lying about her being his sister (Gen. 12:10-20; Gen. 20:1-18). Aaron followed the people he was charged to lead and gave them a golden calf, rather than pointing them to God as the one deserving of their praise (Ex. 32). Moses responded in anger, thus failing to enter the Promised Land (Num. 20:10-13). Saul cared more about himself than obeying God (1 Sam. 15). David’s sin with Bathsheba tainted his ability to lead for the remainder of his reign (2 Sam. 24:1-17). Zechariah failed to trust God completely in providing a child for him (Luke 1:18-20). Peter could be rash and proud (John 13:36-38). The list could go on. A survey of church history, or even our current relationships, would reveal even more disappointment.

A Little Greek Can Be a Big Distraction

Blog

In our fast paced electronic world today who has time for books anymore? Even if we had the time why should we spend it reading a book? After all, anything we want to know we can Google and have our answer in an instant. What possible reason, then, could compel the modern man to stop, sit down and read a book from cover to cover? Honestly it is a difficult and daunting task to try and convince a person of today to give reading a book a try. If they want entertainment they have movies, television and an iPod/iPhone for that. If they want to know something they do not already know then there is Google and Wikipedia for that. It seems then that books have outlasted their purposes and are antiquated mediums for things we can now access so much more expediently. One of the greatest difficulties of convincing such a person that they ought to read books is that they wouldn’t read an argument for doing so. If they started to read an essay like this one they probably would have stopped at the end of the first paragraph and said “exactly.” But for those who would continue reading I am probably preaching to the choir by now.

Seminary Wives Institute

At Southern Seminary, we recognize the need for God-called ministers’ wives to be prepared for ministry. We believe that a minister’s wife needs to be educated and equipped as she and her husband prepare for service in the churches and beyond. The time a student wife is in the seminary setting with her husband is the perfect time to undertake this training. She has opportunity to network with other wives who are preparing for the place God has for them. She will benefit from her study with faculty wives who can share from their rich experience. The courses in the Seminary Wives Institute (SWI) are designed to give ministers’ wives biblically based and practically applied teaching. They are taught by our own seminary faculty as well as faculty wives and guest speakers. We are committed to make this institute a vital part of the seminary wife’s experience at Southern Seminary.

The Reformation Project | Washington, D.C. Regional Training Conference

Chanese Elifé was born and raised in New York City, and she started leading worship there in 2003. From the beginning of her career, it was made clear by family and church leaders that being a lesbian was not an option if she wanted to be a worship leader. Due to this, Chanese denied her sexuality and had a successful career leading worship at hundreds of churches in the Tri-State Area. In 2008, Chanese signed with a gospel record label. At the same time, she began a relationship with a woman and found herself at risk of being outed and potentially losing her entire fan base. Chanese took a hiatus and attended Hillsong College in Sydney, Australia, in the hopes of working on “healing” and living as a straight woman. While at Hillsong, Chanese received counseling for her same-sex attractions. During this time, she was also taking theology courses that challenged the belief that homosexuality was a sin. As a result, she took a break from Hillsong and delved deeper into studying affirming theology, leading her to accept her sexual identity and depart from Hillsong. She is honored to be emceeing the D.

He is entirely correct: The argument from sentiment is irrelevant to this particular case. 30 Returning to Rome - Christian Research Institute

In recent years there has been a steady migration of prominent evangelical leaders into the Roman Catholic Church. Frank Beckwith, J.Budziszewski, Thomas Howard, Peter Kreeft, and Richard John Neuhaus, to name a few, have startled, even upset, many in the evangelical community by their move to Catholicism. Prominent evangelical leaders such as Charles Colson and J.I. Packer have led the way in seeking to bring together Catholics and evangelical Protestants, claiming that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. Catholics and evangelical Protestants have worked well together for the well-being of society because of our mutual agreement on key moral and social issues, but there still remain significant doctrinal differences between us. The Reformation set forth key doctrines that denounced established Roman Catholic teachings, and in response the Catholic Counter-Reformation and the Council of Trent reaffirmed the tenets of Roman Catholicism and anathematized or accursed those who embraced the doctrines of the Reformers. Despite progress in ecumenism since Vatican II, this doctrinal divide between Roman Catholicism and orthodox Protestantism remains to the present day.

Now It's Whale Hips: Another Icon of Darwinian Evolution, Vestigial Structures, Takes a Hit

Male genitalia evolve rapidly, probably as a result of sexual selection. Whether this pattern extends to the internal infrastructure that influences genital movements remains unknown. Cetaceans (whales and dolphins) offer a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis: since evolving from land-dwelling ancestors, they lost external hind limbs and evolved a highly reduced pelvis which seems to serve no other function except to anchor muscles that maneuver the penis. Here we create a novel morphometric pipeline to analyze the size and shape evolution of pelvic bones from 130 individuals (29 species) in the context of inferred mating system. We present two main findings: 1) males from species with relatively intense sexual selection (inferred by relative testes size) have evolved relatively large penises and pelvic bones compared to their body size, and 2) pelvic bone shape diverges more quickly in species pairs that have diverged in inferred mating system. Neither pattern was observed in the anterior-most pair of vertebral ribs, which served as a negative control. This study provides evidence that sexual selection can affect internal anatomy that controls male genitalia.

What Does it Actually Mean to ‘Connect With God’?

Some people hear the voice of God when they run. Others worship deeply by playing with their children. We have to get used to the idea that there are a million different ways to spend time with God, to hear His voice, to draw near to Him. As the millennial generation cultivates new style and inculpates it into the way we “do church,” new trends develop in Christian culture as they do in any culture. We can’t forget that some people won’t like the new Hillsong album or connect with the way your church, small group or community fellowships. We must be careful not to make those people feel “less Christian” or outside of the community because they connect with God differently.

C. S. Lewis and Mere Christianity

McCusker takes readers behind the pages of Mere Christianity and into the World War II context of Lewis’s British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) radio addresses. It was in a BBC studio, at that notable time in history, that Lewis recorded the broadcasts that would later become the iconic book. This succession of talks appeared on the airwaves of a country embroiled in war. Lewis would receive letters from listeners, writing answers into his script to better apply Christian truth to an audience grappling with usual war-time questions regarding good, evil, and the workings of the universe. McCusker notes that for Lewis, the compilation that became Mere Christianity “captured the overriding intention behind the original broadcast talks: to explore those things commonly believed by ‘nearly all Christians at all times’” (188). Indeed, times of crisis only add ferocity to the questions people have always asked, and war requires the same answers Christians should provide (and believe) regardless of the situation. Lewis no doubt desired to speak into his immediate context, but he knew that the foundational longings were universal.

New Series: Does the Bible Ever Get it Wrong? Facing Scripture's Difficult Passages

I am neither a scholar, nor the son of a scholar but I had a number of “aha” moments, as I made the transition from Mormonism back to my Evangelical faith. In the late 70s I re-entered the Christian world thinking the Bible was wrecked, but I was okay with that – “it contained the word of God” I thought, and is generally reliable on “the big idea.” As time went on and I had to confront the issue with my Mormon friends (as well as some inerrantists from Brooklyn constantly knocking at my door), I found time and time again that the Bible stood up to scrutiny. By taking on the Mormon assaults on the Bible and checking on the Watchtower/Adventist/Baha’i/Muslim citations and use of sources, I was reading all kinds of good undergrad level books on the text of the OT, the NT, Apocrypha and even the spurious / gnostic texts. As time went on, I was reading critical commentaries, as well as “issue books.” My view of the Bible, the canon as we have it in the west, was enhanced. The Bible really grew by leaps and bounds in my estimation by comparison to the sacred texts and ancient writings of other religions.

Why Do Christians Worship on Sunday?

From creation onward, the people of God worshiped on the seventh day of the week. This was a “creation ordinance” that the Creator Himself established by His example, with the intent that His creatures would follow it. He worked six days and called His image-bearers to work (Gen. 2:15); He rested on the seventh day (Gen. 2:2; Ex. 20:11; 31:17) and called His image-bearers to rest. He signified this with His benediction, setting apart the seventh day as “holy” (Gen. 2:3).

"I knew that I needed fellowship but I was afaid [sic] that once again I would be hurt. On a bad day I was channel surfing and there was Joel Osteen saying that God loved me. Me. He went on to say no matter what I had done that I was worthy. I felt as though he was talking to only me. This was a turning point in my life. I needed to hear this the way he presented God to me. I found a wonderful church where the gosple [sic] is spoken unadulterated. Joel Osteen laid the seed in my heart and I give God the glory."
