If the Gospel Isn’t Shaping Your Church, What Is?

But “gospel-centered” means many things to many people. It’s a creed that’s commonly claimed but rarely defined. What, then, does it look like to have the gospel—the good news of God’s astonishing mercy to sinners in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—shaping the culture and identity of our congregations?

Disney Is Making a New ‘Mary Poppins’ Movie

Disney is recycling yet another one of their classic films. The studio has announced that a follow-up to the 1964 Academy Award-winning family film Mary Poppins is in the works. Though the new story will still be based on the work of author P.L. Travers, it will be set decades after the events of the first, now in 1950s England. Like the original movie, the revisited flick will also be a musical. Mary Poppins joins a list of upcoming classic children's movies being revisited including The Jungle Book, Mulan, Sword in the Stone, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo and Pinocchio as Disney screenwriters desperately continue the search for just one more good new idea.

5 Trends Christians Millennials MUST STOP Doing | John Wesley Reid

This article is well written, but it still sits weird with me. I am not writing this response to stir the pot but I felt like I need to chime in. The more we target millennials the farther they will run from the church. We need to give it a rest and stop labeling the generations or blaming the Millennials for the problems in the church. We all have issues at every age. I am educated in the Bible. I have a degree in it, as well as business. I worked for one of the largest mega churches in the world for years and left it when I continually felt like I could be more resourceful and beneficial to the kingdom by leaving those 4 walls and everything that gets put on you for just being apart of “church name”. I only have to defend Jesus now, not all the baggage that comes from our modern church and culture. Millennials can sniff false truths and gimmicks from a mile away, that’s why they are leaving and not coming back. Millennials are actually creating thier own churches that are in the cities, at the parties, and it’s amazing. But the people that never go to parties, never go to human right events, or to the needy, don’t ever see it.

Help, I Married the Wrong Person

When Jesus defended marriage in the New Testament, he did so not in the name of love or compatibility, but on the basis of God’s authority over marriage (Matt. 19:6; Mark 10:9). We believe in the earthly permanence of marriage because we know that God has joined this particular man with this woman. From our first parents, Adam and Eve, to our own marriages, God has given us to each other. Our modern culture makes it easy for us to think that we have made a mistake when marriage gets hard, because we do the choosing. There are few arranged marriages in Western culture. Many men and women date, shop for a ring, and pick the date all on their own. I know I did. With the exception of my husband asking my dad for permission to marry me (and the fact that we were set up by friends), we really were “in control” of our relationship. When marriage gets hard, this perceived control makes us think we have a way out—or at least deserve a way out.

How I dumped the mega-church model and found something bigger | Fox News

That afternoon, listening to our church planters, I put my hands under the table and literally forced them open to God. Opened in surrender. Opened as a sign that I must take my hands off of one of the most precious earthly things to me—my church. Open as on offering of praise to Jesus’ worthiness and faith in his promise. Open in the belief that God builds his kingdom as we let go, not as we hold on.

How Great Is Our God

Third is the greatness of his eternality. He never had a beginning, and he will never have an end. He is Alpha and Omega, he is the beginning and the end — nothing came before him and nothing will come after him. But not only does he stand unmoved from age to age, but “time is in his hands.” Not only is he before and after time, but he controls time, every century and year and hour and minute and second-tick — from him and through him and for him (Romans 11:36). He is great in relation to time.

Boston hospital panel upholds doctor’s firing for telling the truth about LGBT behaviour

A frightening thing is happening in America’s medical community. Public health is under assault by the pro-homosexual movement. In a manner that can almost be considered demonic, medical truth that could affect millions of people is being censored by “educated” doctors obsessed with the lies of political correctness. It brings to mind the mentality of medical people who continue to defend Planned Parenthood after the unspeakable horrors that have been revealed. As always, along with this mindset goes a near-pathological hatred of Judeo-Christian religious belief. Good people must stand up to this.

Christian Professor Warns: Movies About Heaven, Near Death Experience 'Can Harm Christian Theology'

Christian films continue to dominate at the box office thanks to a growing consumer appetite for faith-based entertainment, but one Christian professor says that a particular theme of Christian films and books, namely those about Heaven and the afterlife, could potentially be harmful to Christianity.

Your Neighbor Knows About the Wrath of God

Winning people to Christ involves the recognition of a need that only Christ can meet. There is one need, among many, which, if not met, will nullify the good of any other needs being met. We all need to escape the wrath of God, a wrath which is coming on the world. If we don’t, all other blessings come to nothing. Therefore, one indispensable truth of the good news of Jesus Christ is that he — and he alone — delivers believers from the wrath to come.

The Scientific Case for Forgiveness

But, it's important to define forgiveness well. Forgiveness is accepting what happened and moving on without wishing harm on the one who hurt you. It is not placing yourself in situations where you will continue to be hurt or abused. You can forgive someone and still maintain necessary boundaries in a relationship. In cases of severe abuse, that boundary may need to be no further contact.

Farewell to the Missionary Hero

After his death, Edwards edited Brainerd’s diaries into a tale of a sickly, orphaned missionary who persevered against physical, spiritual, and emotional hardships. This book became one of Edwards’s most popular, remaining to this day his most frequently reprinted work. Brainerd became a folk hero: Stories circulated of a frontier saint subsisting on bear meat and Indian cornmeal, encountering poisonous snakes that refused to attack, and kneeling so long in prayer that he couldn’t stand to walk.

A Call for Hope in the Age of Mass Incarceration

Both solution sharing and respectability require some measure of hope. You get neither with despair or cynicism. Hope was beneath the respectable Sunday-best attire worn to civil-rights marches. Hope was undergirding calls for respectable self control among sit-in demonstrators while being inhumanely sprayed with condiments at lunch counters. Hope was resting in the weary hearts of respectable marchers and demonstrators packed in jail cells following protests. In the fight against the new slavery of mass incarceration, communities need the kind of hope whose back licked up flesh-splitting whips and dared dream of freedom anyway; the kind of hope that defied two centuries of educational oppression and disenfranchisement to elect black politicians in Reconstruction and establish institutions of higher learning; the kind of hope that managed to hold heads up high even when Jim Crow posted signs of white supremacy at every water fountain and public entrance; the kind of hope that marched all over U.S. cities for equal rights, full enfranchisement and integration; and the kind of hope that gave rise to blues, jazz, protest songs, and gospel.

If My Government Funds Abortions, Why Pay Taxes?

Now here is my practice and why. I pay my taxes to the American government — I have now for 40–50 years. And my reason is first, the Bible says that this is one of the rights of the state to collect taxes to fund its duties. Romans 13:1 and 4 say, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. . . . He is God’s servant for your good.” Verses 6–7: “For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.”

Why Don’t Churches Talk About Health?

This is such an important issue! Thank you for bringing this up! My church actually started a fitness group last year after our pastors invited a certified doctor to come and speak at our church. It has made such a difference! People in my church, who formally dealt with many health issues (from back pain to failing organs), have radically changed the way we view health & fitness. Whole families are changing their diets, getting active, and generally just feeling better. I'm telling you - joy and peace are absolutely connected to taking care of our physical bodies. I don't sell anything... I'm just a huge advocate for health because I've seen what it has done in my friends' and family's lives. It's about way more than losing weight. It's about living an abundant life. The more we educate ourselves about our physical bodies and adopt a healthy lifestyle, the more effective our testimony will be in spreading the gospel. Health is His will--it should be ours, too!

Fear by Marilynne Robinson

There is something I have felt the need to say, that I have spoken about in various settings, extemporaneously, because my thoughts on the subject have not been entirely formed, and because it is painful to me to have to express them. However, my thesis is always the same, and it is very simply stated, though it has two parts: first, contemporary America is full of fear. And second, fear is not a Christian habit of mind. As children we learn to say, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.” We learn that, after his resurrection, Jesus told his disciples, “Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Christ is a gracious, abiding presence in all reality, and in him history will finally be resolved.

2016 National Conference

We must be prepared to articulate and defend our faith so that we can give an answer for the hope that is within us (1 Peter 3:15). To help prepare you for this task, our national conference will be centered on the theme of "The Gospel."

How to Reach Your Friends Who Don’t Believe

I agree with a lot of this but I've found that Holy Spirit is the best evangelist, he knows exactly what the person needs to hear and if we're listening, amazing things can happen. Most of the entire Bible defies logic and reason and God does that on purpose, but sometimes Paul reasoned with people and they believed, other times it was a prophetic word or a healing or word of knowledge that made people feel known and loved by God. We need to listen closely to Him to know what to do. Also, none of any of this really works if real love towards a person isn't at the root of it, which needs to be cultivated and developed with God on your own time. Yes God gave us powerful brains and gives us wisdom, but remember our weapons aren't carnal but are in the spirit! Which is freedom because we don't have to bear the immense pressure of the entire world's salvation, it's His, and we simply have the privilege of letting Him carry it through us.

38 The Atheist Who Didn't Exist

Yet when one pokes at popular atheism, many of the arguments used to prop it up quickly unravel. The Atheist Who Didn't Exist is designed to expose some of the loose threads on the cardigan of atheism, tug a little, and see what happens. Blending humour with serious thought, Andy Bannister helps the reader question everything, assume nothing and, above all, recognise lazy scepticism and bad arguments. Be an atheist by all means: but do be a thought-through one.

Helpers for Unfinished Husbands

In much the same way, my husband is called to represent the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ in our marriage. But I have to remember he’s just a photo — a representation, an image, a sketch of the real thing. Our husbands have a great and glorious calling to be like Christ for us. They’re called to love us as Christ loves the church and laid his life down for her (Ephesians 5:25).

DOUBT: A Splinter In The Mind | by Bobby Conway

Horrifying so, doubt is no stranger to our time. And capturing the zeitgeist of our changing times is quite the project. We live in a multi-textured culture that is replete with innumerable beliefs, opinions, ideas, and life philosophies. Ours is a culture of doubt and longing, faith and questioning, searching and probing. And much of the doubt has been accelerated by fast-paced change. Our culture is living between the tension of what we once were and what we are now becoming. And for many, waiting in the blank space between the definition of what we were and the search to define what we are becoming feels for the moment confusing, and even a bit uncomfortable.

Just weeks after announcing that he would be paying for more than 2,000 young students in his home state of Ohio to go to college, Lebron James has unveiled a new part of his “I PROMISE” campaign that will help their parents. In a partnership between the LeBron James Family Foundation and Project Lean of Summit County, the basketball star’s organization will assist the parents of the 2,300 at-risk children currently benefitting from the campaign, which will pay for the college tuition of students who eventually graduate high school (while meeting outlined academic goals).

49 Apologetics Strategies: The Myth of a Bulletproof Argument

With this in mind, you want to be careful not to burn all of your relationship bridges in one conversation, especially if it’s with a family member, roommate, or coworker. It’s generally a good idea to have multiple conversations over time and patiently stay the course instead of trying to force the person into a decision. If the person feels heard and loved, they are more likely to revisit difficult conversations about faith. But if the person feels intimidated, pressured, or shamed, the door to future conversations will probably be closed. I have found that it’s often better to stop a little short in a conversation, take some time to pray and even ask the Holy Spirit for an opportunity to re-approach.

Renewing Your Mind | The Reliability of Scripture | September 15, 2015

Those who hold this position usually want to stress that the authority of God's Word depends on God Himself and believe that subjecting His Word to empirical testing is to make the Bible's truthfulness dependent on our own authority to evaluate its truth claims. At one level, this concern is laudable. Scripture's authority depends on its being the revelation of God, above whom there is no higher authority. But when we are talking about proof for the veracity of Scripture, we are not talking about the authority of God's Word but about how we know which of the books that claim to be the Word of God are actually from Him. Here, subjective experience cannot be our only court of appeal. We need some sort of objective testimony to determine whether the Bible, Qur'an, or Bhagavad Gita is the Word of God because they all claim to be the Word of God.
