REBOOT | Youth Apologetics

Once a year, REBOOT meets in the centre of London to explore questions such as ‘How can we know God exists?’, ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ and ‘Hasn’t science disproved God?’. REBOOT provides a place for young people from 12-18 years old, with or without any faith or church background, to raise their objections and investigate different perspectives. Through its annual conference, online resources, and speaking invitations, REBOOT aims to equip young people to understand and be able to answer some of these big questions for themselves. Our team from the Zacharias Trust and the OCCA [the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics] want you to have confidence in what you believe, and the chance to be honest about your doubts. Since its launch in 2013, REBOOT has welcomed over 1000 young people, and this year we are excited to see more of you than ever!

Kim Davis' Office Will Issue Marriage Licenses, but Without Her Signature; Issue Not Settled

After sitting in jail for six days for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of her Christian faith, Rowan County, Kentucky clerk Kim Davis returned to work Monday with a 'remedy' to avoid violating her conscience and disobeying God - until further notice, any marriage license issued by her office will not have her name or authorization.

These Kids Survived Jokes From Their Dads … Now They are Telling Their Story – LOL!

We have all heard our dads tell a bad joke. Sometimes they are so bad that they are actually pretty good. Most of the time these jokes are cheesy and harmless, and are usually told while on a family trip or during dinner. The kids in this video share their childhood jokes of their fathers, and it is hilarious!

Watch Donald Trump Interview ‘Himself’ with Jimmy Fallon

GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump visited The Tonight Show on Friday night, and took part in a surprisingly self-deprecating bit with host Jimmy Fallon. For the big “interview,” Trump sat across from Fallon—who donned his own Trump wig and spray-tan—for a conversation with himself looking into a mirror. Not only was the segment funny (it is Fallon after all), Trump also didn’t seem to mind making fun of his own reputation, appearance and even policy. We’ll see if he’s able to maintain the same friendly tone when he visits Colbert, who famously “dared” Trump to come on The Late Show, next week.

George Clooney Calls for More Female Film Leads

In Our Brand is Crisis, Sandra Bullock plays a political adviser based on James Carville. As producer George Clooney reveals, the part was originally written for a man, until the Academy Award-winning actress expressed interest. It’s certainly not the first time this has happened. Sigourney Weaver’s iconic Alien role, Ripley, was written for a male lead. In more recent years, Angelina Jolie’s character Evelyn Salt was meant to be a man, as well. If Clooney has anything to say about it, Hollywood will be doing more of these gender swaps in the future. “Sandy called and said she wanted to do the role, [which] was originally developed for a man,” Clooney told reporters at the film’s Toronto screening. “And once we realized that you could change it really easily, it made you realize that there are an awful lot of women’s roles that could be out there if people just started thinking in this way.” Yes, it really is that simple. Our Brand is Crisis is out October 30. Check out the trailer below.

The Preacher’s Neglected Tool

It’s important not to overreact to exemplary preaching; the Bible is full of examples. But the Christian is primarily exhorted to grow to be like Christ, not to be like Abraham or Moses or whomever. Other biblical characters can be appealed to as exemplars of faith when it’s clear from their relationship to Christ in what way they are. For instance, Hebrews 11 clearly portrays Old Testament heroes as models of faith and courage, but it also makes the source of our faith “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (12:2). Ultimately, the writer sees the heroes of faith as pointing us to Christ: we are to imitate their example, but the power to do so only comes by looking to Jesus.

A Patterned Life: Faith, History, and David Bebbington

A Patterned Life is a labor of love by Eileen, who wishes to get the details down about David and his remarkable life. I suspect that many of us wish we had someone like Eileen who could painstakingly save the stories of our lives before we—and our biographies—pass from the scene. For those who don’t know David personally, this book offers an illuminating account of British social and family history since World War II, and of a seminal figure in Anglo-American Christian intellectual life during that period. Anyone who knows David will have the added bonus of getting the backstory on his peculiar, endearing habits, such as why and when he started taking detailed notes on every church service he attends (when visiting Waco, he typically goes at least three times a week, and more if he can find a multi-evening revival meeting). He’s taken those notes since 1965, and they surely represent the world’s largest single-author trove of documentation of post-1960s church practices.

If Babies Go to Heaven, Why Oppose Abortion?

Rodrigo from Brazil, writes in to ask this: “Hello Pastor John! I’ve seen your effort to combat the terrible abortion policy that has literally ripped apart thousands of precious lives. Jesus says, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these’ (Matthew 19:14). So my question is: Do aborted babies go to heaven, even not having the chance to be born? And to piggyback on this question, in recent online debates, critics of the pro-life movement say if aborted babies do go to heaven, then why is abortion really a big deal in the end for Christians?”

5 Ways to Talk to Your Children About Death

As a pastor, I always found serving as the messenger of ill tidings particularly difficult. Or do we speak of it straightforwardly as we might with another adult?

The God Particle - Christian Research Institute

The reaction among some atheists to the recent, remarkable empirical confirmation by scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) of the existence of the Higgs boson (AKA “the God particle”) is bewildering. The fact that nonscientists would take this as a disproof of God or as another victory in the warfare between science and religion can be written off to the deplorable state of science education in our country, which has frequently been lamented by professional scientists. But when scientists themselves, who must know better, go on the air also making statements to similar effect, then the suspicion arises that much more than ignorance is to blame for such reckless statements.

I would build temporary housing and temporary school and temporary hospital ... Then we will use these people and provide them jobs to build a new city on the island, to build this island ... I Thought Planned Parenthood Protected Family Values

In 1818 Shelley, the 17-year-old child wife of poet Percy Shelley and the classically educated daughter of natural philosopher William Godwin and first feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, wrote a novel on a dare. Deeply influenced by natural philosopher and English physician Erasmus Darwin (grandfather of Charles), Frankenstein is about a bachelor who learns how to create life in a laboratory. The protagonist scientist, Victor Frankenstein, is raised by a progressive family, one that protects him from the foolish superstitions of organized Christian religion and affords him the best education in the natural sciences. He’s therefore unafraid to collect body parts from a church graveyard by dismembering bodies. The novel records how night after night he returns to the graveyard and hacks away until he has the bloody parts he needs. It’s base and gruesome work done in the name of higher-minded science. Frankenstein works hard to extract intact internal organs. He skimps on the skin, though, creating a creature whose skin doesn’t stretch to cover all his internal organs.

The Scientific Case for Forgiveness

But, it's important to define forgiveness well. Forgiveness is accepting what happened and moving on without wishing harm on the one who hurt you. It is not placing yourself in situations where you will continue to be hurt or abused. You can forgive someone and still maintain necessary boundaries in a relationship. In cases of severe abuse, that boundary may need to be no further contact.

Only God Can Judge Me???

This is not a video co-signing the "holier than thou" people who seem to enjoy pointing out other peoples flaws. This is my humble attempt to aid in rectifying the socially accepted mantra "don't judge me", and also to help in stopping people from erroneously using the Bible as a trump card in order to continue in their reckless behavior. Despite popular belief, it IS possible to realize the good in someone, yet recognize their flaws at the same time. A person that loves you will congratulate you when you do good, but will correct you when you do wrong. Proper judgement holds us accountable for our actions and ultimately leads us to truth, and we all need the truth. https://www.facebook.com/TorahCents?f... https://twitter.com/@torahcents http://instagram.com/torahcents

Why Don’t Churches Talk About Health?

This is such an important issue! Thank you for bringing this up! My church actually started a fitness group last year after our pastors invited a certified doctor to come and speak at our church. It has made such a difference! People in my church, who formally dealt with many health issues (from back pain to failing organs), have radically changed the way we view health & fitness. Whole families are changing their diets, getting active, and generally just feeling better. I'm telling you - joy and peace are absolutely connected to taking care of our physical bodies. I don't sell anything... I'm just a huge advocate for health because I've seen what it has done in my friends' and family's lives. It's about way more than losing weight. It's about living an abundant life. The more we educate ourselves about our physical bodies and adopt a healthy lifestyle, the more effective our testimony will be in spreading the gospel. Health is His will--it should be ours, too!

How to Survive World Religions 101

Many students can relate. Churches often have a hard time preparing their youth for a secular university environment. They equip them on a moral level, which is good and important, yet fail to prepare them intellectually and doctrinally. So how can churches better brace young people for the day their faith will be challenged, attacked, and deemed intellectually indefensible by professors and peers?

The One-Man Roadshow of Donald Trump

The 69-year-old billionaire has soared to the top of the Republican field flying solo—a man and his plane, propelled forward by a gust of free media attention and virtually devoid of the staff, position papers, opposition researchers and ad budgets of modern campaigns. Now, though, with the time for summer flings ending and more serious voter examination just ahead, the Trump effort has reached an inflection point, at which he must decide whether he can continue to prosper as this kind of one-man show or whether the time for that is running out.

When ‘Discernment’ Leads to Disaster

That 2000 CBF policy, still in effect, dates back to when an older generation was leading the CBF and it reflects the fact that many of the churches that were ready to join the CBF in the 1990 were not (yet) ready to endorse homosexuality. The CBF has no argument against homosexuality on biblical terms, so it is only a matter of time before it changes its policy. Even in 2000, the group announced the policy but claimed to take no “position” on homosexuality itself: “CBF values and respects the autonomy of each individual and local church to evaluate and make their own decision regarding social issues like homosexuality.”

Why Bad Feelings Can Be Good for You

These are two examples where we are actually commanded by God to "be angry". We are also given instructions on how to keep our anger in check. God gave us every emotion for a purpose. Anger is considered a warning emotion that something is wrong. Often times that something wrong is legitimately wrong, not just a skewed perception on our part. We have done ourselves a disservice to ignore these emotions as if the emotion itself is a sin. Unfortunately for many years, we have seen a shift in the portrayal of Christ as an always mild, calm, gentle, passive, affirming Christ. This is just not accurate. When Jesus violently turned tables over the tables in the temple because of the horrible misuse of God's house, He was showing great emotion, including anger and it was very justified and certainly not sinning since we know Christ was without sin. What we take away is that being an imitator of Christ means we include all aspects of Christ, not just the aspects (including emotions) that seem more safe, recognizing only the positive, feel good parts. That isn't presenting all of Christ, not representing the fullness of His Character.

Why Does the Tale of Redemption Comes to Us in the Language of Patriarchal Society?

God is beyond human gender and our relationship to him beyond blood, but the tale of redemptive history comes to us in the language of a patriarchal society. Father God is buying back his lost children by sending his eldest son, his heir, to “give His life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20:28), so that we alienated might be “adopted as sons” and share forever in the inheritance of this “firstborn of all creation” [Col 1:15].

Giving Your Pastor Feedback After a Sermon. Some Helpful Tips. ~ vassal of the King

Giving Your Pastor Feedback After a Sermon... Geoffrey R. Kirkland Christ Fellowship Bible Church “Good sermon.” “Helpful!” “Interesting.” “Awesome message.” “Thanks, Pastor!” Pastors hear these sorts of comments after sermons from time to time. Some may come more frequently than others. But if you ask most pastors who care about feeding the flock and who have literally emptied all that they have in that hour of heralding, many who approach them after sermons unknowingly do not provide helpful feedback. It’s not necessarily bad. It’s not necessarily harmful. It’s just not the most helpful. Preachers have heard the standard lines that people give on their way out of the church building when they give a brief word before heading home. Ministers have heard those.  But feedback that is more helpful and more thoughtful is what every pastor needs. Here are a few helpful pointers in giving your shepherd helpful feedback after he has preached the Word of God to you. 1. Be specific in your feedback.

I’m convinced that Jesus was crazy about broken people. He hung out with them, spent time with them, conversed about life with them, touched them, and found His place among them as family even though they ultimately rejected Him. So I’m also convinced that Jesus is crazy about churches that do what He commissioned them to do – get crazy about the broken.

The Pastor and Counseling—A Conversation with Deepak Reju & Jeremy Pierre

How do we apply the gospel to same-sex attraction? Why does a teenager struggling with self-cutting need to hear about justification by faith alone? How in the world can a biblical doctrine of God help a husband prone to anger? The nature of pastoral ministry means identifying with people in their sin, which is just another way of saying that part of a pastor’s job description is the hard work of biblical counseling. But too often, churches and pastors leave this work up to the “professionals” for fear of not knowing enough and feeling unequipped.
