2 Same-Sex Marriage Is Not the New Interracial Marriage - Stand to Reason Blog

This is why, in both cases, the advocates require state coercion to enforce their goals. Without the state’s cooperation and enforcement, there would have been no anti-miscegenation laws and there would be no same-sex marriage. The reason for this, writes libertarian economist Jennifer Roback Morse, is that “marriage between men and women is a pre-political, naturally emerging social institution. Men and women come together to create children, independently of any government.” Hence, this explains its standing as an uncontroversial common law liberty. “By contrast,” Morse goes on to write, “same-sex ‘marriage’ [and same-race-only marriage] is completely a creation of the state….”

Should Christians use in vitro fertilization? In vitro-literally “in glass”-fertilization (IVF) is an increasingly popular form of reproductive technology that should raise significant moral concerns in the hearts and minds of believers. First, there are major moral concerns associated with using biotechnology in place of the natural means for procreation. The fertilization of an egg […]

Grace to You

No matter how difficult or discouraging our own circumstances become, we have the very same Spirit. If we’re hindered, we don’t have to be frustrated. If we’re puzzled, we don’t have to be in despair. If we’re persecuted, we don’t have to face it alone. If we’re dying from a physical disease, we can be alive in heart and spirit. Our outer person might be exhausted and hard-pressed, but we have the assurance that our inner self is being renewed with fresh strength daily from the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 4:16).

Cruz Letter: Why is the IRS Auditing Breitbart News?

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, today sent the following letter to the Internal Revenue Service regarding its decision to audit Breitbart News Network, LLC. The full text of the letter is available here. Dear Commissioner Koskinen: I write to express deep concern over the recent announcement by Breitbart News that the Internal Revenue Service recently notified the Breitbart News Network, LLC that it would be subject to a far-reaching, burdensome, and open-ended audit. As you know, the Breitbart News Network LLC is a conservative-leaning press outlet. It has editors and reporters who cover daily political news and regularly breaks stories that are critical of the Obama Administration's policies. To conduct this audit, Breitbart News Network, LLC was asked to provide the IRS with all of its organizational documents, financial records, W-2s, W-4s, 1099s, and K-1s filed, personal income tax returns for each member of the company, payroll tax forms, information regarding properties and assets acquired by the company, bank statements, and array of other records documenting revenues, expenses, and depreciation costs.

InterVarsity "Derecognized" at California State University's 23 Campuses: Some Analysis and Reflections

It's not just InterVarsity that will be impacted. Following the same logic, any group that insists on requiring its leaders to follow an agreed upon set of guiding beliefs is no longer kosher (irony intended) at California's state universities. This will impact many other faith-based organizations with actual, well, faith-based beliefs. Presumably, even People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would have to allow Oscar Meyer to lead their campus chapters.

How to Love People You Don't Even Like

Sometimes, the way we judge or see others is not out of love in the first place, so of course it is difficult to love them. Sometimes we don’t try to understand why people are the way they are and play the blame game instead of trying to get to know them in a deeper way, understanding the challenges they have faced and what they have gone through to make them act in the ways they do. Everybody is responsible for their own actions and choices, but we have the ability to be patient with others and realize that most people are left with scars in their lives that affect who they are on a day-to-day basis.

Regarded as ‘Intolerant Haters’: What’s New?

Needless to say, such a situation can discourage Christians in the modern day. We might be tempted to despair and think that the church is entering into dark days. But a little historical perspective might be useful. Truth be told, this is not the first time Christians have received such labels. Indeed, pejoratives were given to Christians from the beginning.

Advice to Young Pastors from Sam Storms, Wayne Grudem, David Wells

In addition to knowing Scripture and sound doctrine, it's important to gain a thorough knowledge of how all of Scripture speaks to a wide array of various ethical questions today. Young pastors need to be able to teach people how to live with wisdom and Christlikeness in their everyday lives in an increasingly hostile culture. The good news is that such teaching is one of the main purposes of Scripture, for God “breathed out” the words of Scripture so that we could be trained in godly living: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16).

Seminary Wives Institute

At Southern Seminary, we recognize the need for God-called ministers’ wives to be prepared for ministry. We believe that a minister’s wife needs to be educated and equipped as she and her husband prepare for service in the churches and beyond. The time a student wife is in the seminary setting with her husband is the perfect time to undertake this training. She has opportunity to network with other wives who are preparing for the place God has for them. She will benefit from her study with faculty wives who can share from their rich experience. The courses in the Seminary Wives Institute (SWI) are designed to give ministers’ wives biblically based and practically applied teaching. They are taught by our own seminary faculty as well as faculty wives and guest speakers. We are committed to make this institute a vital part of the seminary wife’s experience at Southern Seminary.

God's Not Dead: Science Discovers Truths the Bible Revealed Long Ago: God is the Foundation for Science

Rational pre-commitments assist in directing one’s investigation and analysis of the data (as well as its interpretation and communication). This admission is often difficult to get from some atheistic inquirers to acknowledge. What worldview can furnish the a priori necessities and rational tools for science, analysis and research? Christian theism can deliver the epistemic ground for the a priori immutable universals utilized in rational enquiry; in principle, materialistic atheism cannot furnish the aforementioned ground. What is obligatory to account for scientific analysis is a first principle that has the ontological endowment to not only ground it, but to account for it and its preconditions—all the universal operational features of knowledge. The loss of the immovable point of reference, in principle, leaves the ungodly bereft of a resource necessary to construct the analytical enterprise. Without God, one cannot hoist the necessary a priori operation features of the intellectual examination of evidence. The Christian worldview supplies the fixed ontic platform as the sufficient truth condition that can justify induction, immutable universals, attributes, identity, and the uniformity of the physical world.

Saving Christianity in Iraq

The White House warned last week that the situation in Iraq risks becoming a "humanitarian catastrophe." The dilemma of persecuted minorities in the region must now surely override any debate over using military power to defeat ISIL. For months, church groups have been trying to raise awareness of this impending tragedy. In Britain, the Archbishop of Canterbury has warned that the threat of ISIL is part of an "evil pattern around the world," as innocent people are victimized and massacred simply because of their beliefs.

22 Is It Proper to Worship Jesus? - Christian Research Institute

Consistent with their denial of the deity of Christ, the Jehovah’s Witnesses deny that Christ should be worshiped. Such worship is viewed as unscriptural and a form of idolatry. What most Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t know is that for more than 60 years Watch Tower founder C. T. Russell (d. 1916) and his successor J. F. Rutherford (d. 1942) taught the worship of Christ, a belief that would be expressed even after Rutherford’s death. In 1944, the Watch Tower Society’s charter was amended and Article II stated that one of the purposes of the Society was for “public Christian worship of Almighty God and Christ Jesus.” After changing this doctrine in 1954 by prohibiting the worship of Jesus, efforts were made to hide this portion of the charter whenever it was cited in Watch Tower publications.

23
Biology's Quiet Revolution

I second that. Although Toretsky and Wright do not get into larger issues in their article, their work is part of a quiet but far-reaching revolution in biology--one that is discrediting the notion that "DNA makes RNA makes protein make us," and along with it the "securely founded" Darwinism of Jacques Monod. If something other than DNA determines an organism's RNAs and proteins, then that "something"--not DNA mutations--is the source of raw materials for evolution. Indeed, the evidence from embryology is consistent with this: No matter how much we mutate the DNA of a fruit fly embryo, the only possible outcomes are a normal fruit fly, a defective fruit fly, or a dead fruit fly. Natural selection cannot produce anything from these raw materials except a fruit fly. Not a housefly, a dragonfly, or a butterfly.

'Jesus on Trial' Corrects Culture's Emasculated View of Christ

In addition to correcting the culture's emasculated view of Christ, Limbaugh has two fantastic chapters tackling the paradoxes of Christianity. These include: God's plan of salvation, including the relationship between grace and works; the acknowledgement that we are sinful yet commanded to be perfect; the Trinity, that God is one in essence yet three in persons; that Jesus has two natures, human and divine; that you must give up your life to find it; that Christians are strong when they are weak; that God is sovereign yet humans have free will; that God knows all and is unchangeable, yet we are to pray; that the Bible is inspired yet written by men; and many others. The insights Limbaugh brings to these paradoxes are some of his own, and the best nuggets mined from Christian scholarship that I doubt you'll find in one place anywhere else.

Where Did the Church’s Influence Go?

In the midst of American culture’s rapid-fire moral changes, whose seeds were actually sown decades ago in the sexual revolution, many Christians are asking, “What happened to the church’s influence?” It’s a good   question, and it’s not surprising that concerned believers would start to ask it in larger numbers as cohabitation, gay marriage, and out-of-wedlock births all become increasingly  common.

The Coming Reformation of Black Churches

Thabiti, I have a concern with this article; it seems that the article validates the white Christians assumption that black Christianity is elementary, inferior, or In more need of a reformation then any other ethnic specific church. We say we are offended that a white brother would ask us to come under his Christian tutelage, but he wouldn’t be willing to come under a black brothers tutelage of the Christian faith; and then, this article. It seems to validate the assumption that blacks could never be the teachers/disciplers of white Christians. Were not theologically deep enough. Then with the vast majority of your readers, I must be honest, it makes me question your motives on writing articles like these. It seems that your appealing to the white superiority complex. I am now a seminary student, and I have been in the black church for nearly all my life, and outside of reformed theology, there has been no drastic change in my core beliefs. And I learned all this from the black church. Inerrancy of scripture was not even a debatable topic; it was just assumed. No one questioned the trinity.

Poverty Can Be Combated With Faith, Family and Work, Says Rep. Southerland

"I think government clearly has a role," Southerland said in an interview with The Christian Post. "You've got some other friends of mine that believe through the tax structure that there is a public policy role for the government to incentivize work. But we also talk about programs such as social security, medicare and medicaid...what roles do those play for those in a permanent state of vulnerability? Tonight we talked about taking a holistic approach, mind, body, and soul, and no one is better suited for that than the Church."

Crash the Chatterbox

Furtick emphasizes his personal call from God, “whispered” directly to him, that together he and God are going to take Charlotte for God’s glory (Kindle location 195). He boasts of “more than one hundred teenagers [making] public declarations of faith in Christ” at a teenager’s funeral where he preached (Kindle location 1350) and of how, after giving a moving eulogy for his father, who died of ALS, $61,000 was pledged in his honor (Kindle location 2730). It’s as though he’s preemptively saying to his critics, “God called me to do this; you can’t argue with these results.”

37 Another Example of Convergent Biochemical Evolution: Caffeine

Sometimes I feel a bit like an odd-man-out living in Seattle, the coffee house capital of the U.S., because I don't like coffee. Don't get me wrong -- I'm no saint when it comes to caffeine. I just prefer to obtain the chemical through other means: I love tea (I've never tried a tea I didn't like), and I'm also a lifelong addict connoisseur of that sweet intelligently designed nectar known as Mountain Dew. ( Here's a shot of a shelf in my office sporting a small basalt column and two bottles of Dew.) But have you ever wondered why there other means of imbibing caffeine - i.e., why are there multiple types of (natural) caffeinated beverages? Coffee is derived from plants of the genus Coffea which belong to the order Gentianales, whereas most popular teas are derived from the plant Camellia sinensis of the order Ericales. And then of course caffeine is also found in beans of the cacao tree (order Malvales), which are used to produce chocolate. How is it that each of these plants came to naturally produce caffeine? After sequencing the "coffee genome," some biologists have now investigated this question, and they found that -- you guessed it - caffeine is another example of "convergent" biochemical evolution.

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph's son?” And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.

The Cure for Our Envy

The only cure for our envy is the love and grace of our jealous Husband as found in the gospel. Only the righteous jealousy of Jesus, seen in the redeeming grace of the cross, can cleanse our envious hearts. Time and again, he forgives our wandering ways. No matter how far our hearts might go, his grace can go farther. While our love for him ebbs and flows and is often fickle, his love is constant and unwavering. When we find our heart wandering in envy, we need to remember and return to him, the One who is always jealous for his Bride.
