Spectacular Discovery Reveals Power Grid in Muscle Cells; Design Implications Are Profound

Evolution News and Views (ENV) provides original reporting and analysis about the debate over intelligent design and evolution.

One of these things is not like the other: Augustine, Lewis, Schaeffer, and... G.S. West?!?

The full quote that the author of the post refers to can be found on TPE here , and if you Google it, you’ll also find that it’s also made its way onto a few other websites and blogs. Why the author chose to quote me, a mere mortal among such intellectual giants, is a mystery to me—but it’s likely that it just struck a chord with him and fit in with the point he was making. He could have from picked a number of similar quotes that say basically the same thing from other sources who would seem less out of place, but regardless of that fact, I’m really stoked that he chose to include mine. I’m tempted to print out the page and hang it on my wall; not just out of some warped sense of pride, but as a reminder that you don’t have to be such a brilliant and profound thinker or a renowned scholar to have an impact on people’s lives. Not all of us can be a C.S. Lewis or Francis Schaeffer, but we can all learn to be solid, critical, and careful thinkers. Seriously folks, it’s not rocket surgery, but it does take some effort.

SES Conference

Welcome to the 2015 annual National Conference on Christian Apologetics (NCCA). Every year, Southern Evangelical Seminary hosts one of the largest apologetics events in the country. Join us on  October 16-17 (the final lecture is on Saturday at 4:30pm) , as we discuss this years theme, "Ideas Have Consequences."  Every consequence, whether good or bad, ultimately begins with an idea. This year's conference will equip Christians to engage today's most prevalent ideas, encouraging attendees to speak words of grace, so they may "know how...to answer each person" (Colossians 4:6). Help us spread the word by following our Facebook page!

This Couple Fed 4,000 Refugees on Their Wedding Day

Instead of a traditional reception, this very cool Turkish couple celebrated their wedding by serving food to more than 4,000 Syrian refugees. The now-newlyweds, Fethullah Üzümcüoğlu and Esra Polat, got married July 30 in Kilis, a Turkish city on the border or Syria—which is an area devastated by civil war. With all of the violence, almost 2 million people have fled from Syria to Turkey. So Üzümcüoğlu and Polat skipped the typical wedding reception and bought for hot meals for some of the refugees. Then, in their coolest move yet, they distributed some of the food themselves—dressed in their wedding-day best.

The Most Misused Verse in the Bible

Thank you for this article. So many people well-intendedly use these verses to encourage others, and often it works... if people like what happens next. For each person like the commenter here who has grown through the trials of heart attacks, there are those who love Jesus but aren't commenting because their loved one, or even themselves, have died. As Christ-followers are martyred daily, and disease and violence causes suffering in Christian homes and lives as well as the lost, we need to learn to manage our expectations of God .. to truly know Him ... and really studying and understanding of Scripture does just that. Scripture is Truth. God's Truth is absolute. There are intended meanings to God's inspired Word that we are supposed to study, learn and apply. While using verses like this, Romans 8:28, 1 Cor. 10:13 or even Phil. 4:13 to encourage people in times of suffering CAN lift them up in the moment, what happens when He doesn't do what they're hoping for? What if they're child dies? What if their mom suffers horribly and painfully from cancer for years and slowly dies? These things happen daily as well.

Compassion, Shame and Cecil the Lion

So the next time people get worked up about a story like that of Cecil the lion, instead of rolling our eyes and getting back to “more important” things, let’s slow down for a second to meet people where they are. Let’s give merit to people’s response, no matter how big or small we think it to be. If we do this, I believe we will see an increase of compassionate people fighting injustices—including the smallest and biggest injustices of our day.

8 Lies We Believe About Porn

Your urges are natural, and porn is an easy if not lesser outlet to release those urges. Learn to forgive yourself and cut yourself some slack. You're not in the minority if you watch porn. And you're not a monster either. Does it effect how you see people? Absolutely, but it can be overcome, and unlike this article's statements, some(not all) can control those thoughts. I personally choose to refrain from watching porn. Friends in committed relationships watch porn together and find that it enhances their sex life in the right mindset. Learn about those people and others, understand their sexuality and their lives. Remove the weight we put on sex. It's neither as amazing or shameful as some make it out to be. Porn and christian culture alike inflate it beyond recognition. It's a smashing good time, and can be a pretty underwhelming time, but if you practice safely, it's not gonna change your entire life. It's a garnish on existence. Explore it, be honest with yourself and others about it, and enjoy it.

This is all rooted in our brains, of course. When you recall events and people from the past, different parts of your brain light up. Archaeologists Uncovered Goliath's Hometown

Archaeologists unearthed a massive gate in the Israeli village of Tell es-Safi that appears to be the entrance to Gath—as in, Goliath of Gath, the giant who stood against the Israelites (1 Samuel 17). According to NBC News , the new findings reveal just how impressive the ancient Philistine city once was. "We knew that Philistine Gath in the 10th to ninth century [B.C.] was a large city, perhaps the largest in the land at that time," Aren Maeir, an archaeologist at Bar-Ilan University in Israel told NBC’s Live Science. "These monumental fortifications stress how large and mighty this city was." It may take a long time to uncover these Gath gates because of their huge size. And here you thought the David and Goliath flannel-graph in your Sunday school classroom was impressive.

As Christians, we ought to weep for the loss of life in this situation, and we ought to pray for peace in the streets of Ferguson and for justice to be done in this case. The mandate from God to the state in Romans 13 is to wield the sword with impartiality and with justice. As citizens, all of us ought to seek to ensure that this is the case, across the board.

How to Protect Endangered Religious Groups You Admire

They also give food, clothing, shelter, counsel, and comfort to millions of Americans in need. They offer some of the most important and desperately needed health, educational, and social services in the country. And they provide billions of dollars and thousands of full-time workers for international relief aid that serves vulnerable migrants, refugees, and persecuted minorities. The work of religious organizations has long been and continues to be central both to religious believers’ lives and to the welfare of others. Our communities—and, indeed, communities around the globe—would be much worse off without these organizations and their faith-informed good works.

12 Wendell Berry Quotes That Will Give You a Fresh Perspective

“This, I thought, is what is meant by 'thy will be done' in the Lord's Prayer, which I had prayed time and again without thinking about it. It means that your will and God's will may not be the same. It means there's a good possibility that you won't get what you pray for. It means that in spite of your prayers you are going to suffer.” — Jayber Crow

Tattoos that Last for Only Two Weeks Are Now a Thing

Ever wanted to get a tattoo but just couldn’t go through with the commitment? A company called Inkbox may have just the solution for you. They’ve already surpassed their Kickstarter goal of $15,752 by wide margin, but are still accepting backers to help fund more designs. And, a portion of every sale will help support an organization called the Darien Initiative, which serves several people groups in Panama, who have been utilizing the temporary tattoo method for decades. North Korea is Establishing its Own Time Zone, Of Course

Regular old time zones are not good enough for North Korea. The hermit country has been in the same time zone as Japan for more than 100 years—ever since the Japanese colonized the Korean peninsula in 1910. Now, the people of North Korea are changing their clocks to mark the 70th anniversary of their liberation from—as the state news agency put it—the “wicked Japanese imperialists.” Instead of jumping an hour to another recognized time zone, though, North Korea is just setting its clocks back half an hour, which may make things rather confusing when it comes to being on time for meetings with other countries.

Although this is a book by women to foster “Word-filled women’s ministry,” much of it will be read with equal profit by men. Reddit Bans Racist Communities and Institutes New Content Policy

Our most important policy over the last 10 years has been to allow just about anything so long as it does not prevent others from enjoying Reddit for what it is: the best place online to have truly authentic conversations. I believe these policies strike the right balance … I know some of you are upset because we banned anything today, but the fact of the matter is we spend a disproportionate amount of time dealing with a handful of communities, which prevents us from working on things for the other 99.98 percent (literally) of Reddit.

3 Major Challenges Facing Millennials

My 48 year old, father of four response: 1) Asking hard and intentional questions - don't answer these yourself as you suggested. Go find an older, wiser mentor and ask his or her advice. Listen to it, and then maybe follow their answers. You just may learn something from those who went before you, and just because the world is different now doesn't mean the advice won't work. 2) Giving grace and space to fail - accept that failing is how you learn, short and simple. Don't top it with sugar by saying it is "a more profound way to be successful." Failure doesn't mean you are stupid or did anything wrong. Learn a lesson and keep going. 3) Finding our 'Signature sauce' - crap. Quit thinking you are made for one super special thing in life and go get a job to support your family and contribute something. My guess is there are many things you can do if you will get off the 'special sauce' and recognize the erroneous theology this reflects. You are made to do many things for the Kingdom of God and society. You may have unique gifts, but don't let those limit your decisions or involvement in life.

Hypocrisy Hurts Everyone's Witness!

Without a doubt, we have hurt our witness to the world with our hypocrisy, thereby undercutting our moral and spiritual authority. Why should people listen to us if we preach one thing and do another? How can we expose sin in the society when we're practicing sin in the church? On what basis can we speak out against gay "marriage" when we've allowed our own marriages to go to pot?

Pope's Creation Teachings Nothing New for Francis Schaeffer Fans

Given the present inclination of religious conservatives towards environmental concerns—white evangelicals now consistently poll among the least concerned about such issues—it may strike some as odd that one of the first published works from the godfather of the Religious Right movement would center on matters green. Schaeffer, though, loved spending time outdoors; he mourned over human actions that marred nature’s beauty and he did not own a car for the final 36 years of his life. He was critical of philosophical elements within the then nascent environmental movement, but his solution was not the ostracism that is regularly practiced today. Instead, he called for the church to lead by example and stand as a “pilot plant” that demonstrated the “substantial healing” of creation that is possible in the here and now.

A Different Way to Think About Mentorship

Innovative Prisoner Surfs to Freedom

An inmate at an island prison in Norway was serving time for rape and drug possession when he escaped by riding waves to freedom . He climbed out of a window, found an old surfboard that he then rode to shore. And to top it all off, he paddled his surfboard escape boat using a toy shovel. All of this isn’t necessarily surprising, because Norway’s Bastøy prison is apparently famous for its lax security—including unlocked rooms, no-bar windows and outdoor sports. The prison’s biggest mistake? Forgetting to lock up the antique surfboards and beach toys.

Are There Really “Gay Christians”?

But this is problematic for the believer who has repented of his sin and trusted Christ for salvation. While Christians still sin, they are not defined by their sin. Dr. Owen Strachan, assistant professor of Christian theology and church history at SBTS, writes about the problem with using the term “gay Christian” to describe believers who deal with same-sex attraction. He explains, “We are not the sum of our lusts, our perversity, our fallenness, whatever shape such sin takes. . . . This means that born-again believers are all, in the words of the same apostolic author [Paul], a ‘new creation’ in Christ ( 2 Cor. 5:17 ).” 5 Scripture repeatedly affirms that believers have new life in Christ, and therefore a new identity:

Respecting Authority in an Era of Police Scandals

I love the UK. But there is a big size and population difference. In 2013, in the UK, there 1.1 million arrests, in the U.S., over 12 million. Deaths By police vary too. And Hispanics and Asians are often listed as white. Chicago has one of the worst murder rates in the U.S., and they are black on black murders. I encourage you, to get a full clear picture, is to look at more than just statistics, or the media coverage of a particular event, especially in relation to how many events happen in the U.S. That being said, the police should be held to a higher standard, they should not react to fear for their life in the same way as a citizen, because they should have been trained to handle those situations. Just a few days, a white was killed by a white police officer. Some of the things to keep in mind, was there any physical altercation that forced the officer to be concerned for his life or others around him. Is the incident happening in a high crime/drug/gang area, where ther is more violence, or mental impairment? Finally, as a Christian, there can only be peace where Christ is.

Judge Orders Bill Cosby Testify at Sex Abuse Case in October

Comedian Bill Cosby will soon have to answer questions related to sexual abuse allegations while under oath. A judge in Los Angeles has ordered that the comedian give a desposition related to a lawsuit that alleges that he sexually abused Judy Huth in 1974, when she was just 15 years old. At the deposition, he must answer questions asked by the accuser’s lawyer. Cosby has faced allegations of sexual abuse from numerous women, dating back decades. In a previous desposition—that was recently made public—Cosby admitted to sexually pursuing young women and seeking ways to obtain drugs to give them.

http://rickwarren.org/devotional/english/why-keep-praying-when-there-is-no-answer

When you pray a prayer request over and over, it’s not to remind God. He doesn’t need to be reminded! It’s to remind yourself who the source of your answer and all your needs is. If every prayer you ever prayed were instantly answered, two things would be true. First, prayer would become a weapon of destruction in your life. And, you’d never think about God, because he would become a vending machine. If every time you prayed you instantly got results, all you’d think about is the blessing. God wants you to think about the Blesser.

What is Apologetics?

For anyone who has spent any amount of time exploring Christianity, you have probably come across the term “apologetics.” But I think that the vast majority of church folk only hear the term when their pastor gives a passing reference to it in an occasional sermon, or when they walk through a Christian bookstore and wander to the rear wall near the restrooms, finding a section labeled “Apologetics” (often nestled between “Christian Living” and “Spanish Bibles”). Or, for our really hardcore/hipster Christian friends, you keep seeing the word pop up when you read your New Testament in Greek.

Faithful Thinkers: The Multiverse Instead of God?: Four Philosophical Problems

Introduction A few weeks ago a skeptic asked me about my concerns with the multiverse as an explanation for the beginning and fine-tuning of the universe. He stated that he did not want a scientific critique, though, because he believes that the multiverse is outside the ability of science to test. He was more interested in my philosophical concerns. Four issues come to mind. None of them remove the possibility of a multiverse in a theistic world; however, two make the multiverse unpalatable in a naturalistic world, and the other two do remove it from possibility in a naturalistic world. I will start by showing the power of the multiverse as an explanation, and at the same time I will show how two of the issues make a naturalistic multiverse impossible as a naturalistic explanation (but do not necessarily rule it out). I will then describe the two issues that make the naturalistic multiverse even less desirable as an explanation. Finally, I will conclude by demonstrating how all these issues are consistently and comfortably resolved by a theistic worldview (with or without a multiverse).

Sunday Quote!- Genre and Genesis 1-11, does it matter?

[U]ltimately we must recognize that how we define the genre of Gen[esis] 1-11 is a secondary issue: our primary concern must be the interpretation of the stories and their application today. The definition of genre refines and clarifies the message of Genesis, but disagreements about genre should not obscure our substantial agreement about the theological teaching of these stories. Whether one calls Gen[esis] 1-11 doctrine, history, fiction, or myth, it is clear that these chapters are making profound statements about the character of God and his relationship to mankind. Elucidating these truths must be the goal of every interpreter. (74,cited below)

Dr. Sproul discusses the different kinds of predestination – symmetrical (equal ultimacy) and asymmetrical. The symmetrical view takes the position that predestination is applied to both the believer and the unbeliever – positive, positive. The asymmetrical view considers that the believer is predestined to be with God, but leaves the unbeliever alone – positive, negative.
