1 Don Johnson: six reasons why people reject Christianity

You must have often wondered why the enemy [God] does not make more use of his power to be sensibly present to human souls in any degree he chooses and at any moment. But you now see that the irresistible and the indisputable are the two weapons which the very nature of his scheme forbids him to use. Merely to over-ride a human will (as his felt presence in any but the faintest and most mitigated degree would certainly do) would be for him useless. He cannot ravish. He can only woo. For his ignoble idea is to eat the cake and have it; the creatures are to be one with him, but yet themselves; merely to cancel them, or assimilate them, will not serve…. Sooner or later he withdraws, if not in fact, at least from their conscious experience, all supports and incentives. He leaves the creature to stand up on its own legs—to carry out from the will alone duties which have lost all relish…. He cannot “tempt” to virtue as we do to vice. He wants them to learn to walk and must therefore take away his hand…. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.

Even as the president gave a forceful eight-and-a-half minute speech, he also made clear the limitations of his actions. He said he authorized airstrikes only to protect American diplomats serving at the U.S. Consulate in Erbil and U.S. military personnel based there. And the aid drops were sent to Mount Sinjar in northwestern Iraq, where reportedly up to 60,000 Yezidis have taken refuge. Obama emphasized, “American combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq.”

Why the US is bombing ISIS in Iraq

President Obama announced on Thursday that he had authorized the US military to launch air strikes against ISIS militants in Iraq if they threatened the Kurdish capital of Erbil or the thousands of Yazidi minority civilians trapped on Mount Sinjar, both in northern Iraq. "When many thousands of innocent civilians are in danger of being wiped out, and we have the capacity to help, we will take action," he said. Those strikes began early on Friday.

Exclusive: Interview With Acting President of Ukraine

Turchynov said only God could have delivered those who refused to be oppressed any longer. The acting president noted how, during the war-like events that took place during the confrontations at Maidan (the city square), huge clouds of smoke would drift toward the Berkut riot police and away from protestors, obstructing the view of the perpetrators. Turchynov said there was also a time when a grenade was thrown near him, but that only one fragment hit him on the cheek, causing no lasting injury.

That Relationship Will Not ‘Complete You’

But here’s the problem, I learned, with my search for “the one”: I was looking for wholeness in all the wrong places. There isn’t a human being on the planet who has the capacity to complete me and make me whole. By putting all my hope for a “happily ever after” in a spouse, I made singleness my problem and marriage the solution. Yet this is not what God intended. Sure enough, the more I searched for fulfillment in others, the more miserable I became. In my singleness, my heart was longing to be satisfied with something greater than a relationship. I just didn’t know what that could be.

Grace to You

Maintaining a balance of knowledge and love is a practical principle that influences the decisions you make every day. For example, if you have a choice between going to a Bible class or helping a neighbor with some immediate need, the better choice is to help your neighbor. You will have other opportunities to learn the Word, but it might be some time before you have a chance to show Christian love to your neighbor.

Acts 29 Network Removes Co-founder Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church From Membership

Mark, As the Board of Acts 29, we are grateful to God for the leadership, courage, and generosity of both you and Mars Hill in not only founding the network but also sustaining it through the transition to this board three years ago. The very act of giving away your authority over the network was one of humility and grace, and for that we are grateful. Over the past three years, our board and network have been the recipients of countless shots and dozens of fires directly linked to you and what we consider ungodly and disqualifying behavior. We have both publicly and internally tried to support and give you the benefit of the doubt, even when multiple pastors in our network confirmed this behavior. In response, we leaned on the Mars Hill Board of Advisors & Accountability to take the lead in dealing with this matter. But we no longer believe the BoAA is able to execute the plan of reconciliation originally laid out. Ample time has been given for repentance, change, and restitution, with none forthcoming. We now have to take another course of action. Based on the totality of the circumstances, we are now asking you to please step down from ministry for an extended time and seek help.

Arabo added that the militants would behead the children, rape the mothers and hang the fathers. He said: "There is a park in Mosul where the ISIS beheads the children and puts their head on a stick and have them in the park." "They are systematically beheading children and mothers," he said.

15 Muhammad and the Messiah: Comparing the Central Figures of Islam and Christianity - Christian Research Institute

Of course, the bedrock of Christian belief has always been Jesus’ resurrection (1 Cor. 15:12–19). When we look at the first-century evidence, we find that after Jesus’ death, His followers became depressed because their teacher had been killed. Yet these same followers were suddenly transformed into bold preachers, most of whom went to their deaths confidently proclaiming that Jesus had risen from the dead and had appeared to them. We see a similar transformation in two people who weren’t followers of Jesus during His earthly ministry. The apostle James went from being a skeptic who rejected Jesus (John 7:5) to being a leader in the early church, all because he was convinced that Jesus had appeared to him (1 Cor. 15:7). The apostle Paul initially persecuted the church and tried to destroy it (Acts 9:1–19). After seeing Jesus on the road to Damascus, however, he started preaching the same  message that Peter, James, and the rest of the apostles were preaching—that Jesus is the risen Lord (1 Cor. 15:11). The only explanation that fits these historical facts is that Jesus rose from the dead.

Why Are People So Upset About What Gungor Said?

I have no more ability to believe, for example, that the first people on earth were a couple named Adam and Eve that lived 6,000 years ago. I have no ability to believe that there was a flood that covered all the highest mountains of the world only 4,000 years ago and that all of the animal species that exist today are here because they were carried on an ark and then somehow walked or flew all around the world from a mountain in the middle east after the water dried up.

19 When Ideology Trumps Science: Neil deGrasse Tyson and Cosmos on Global Warming

As with previous offerings, this episode provides a decent scoop of straightforward science and visuals smothered with a gravy-boat-sized helping of ideological bias and conventional wisdom. In this case, the ideology is not the tired science vs. religion trope to which we've grown accustomed in this series. It's the current fashion for catastrophic, human-induced climate change scenarios. (Well, last year's fashion. Apparently the producers didn't know that they're supposed to talk less about "global warming" and more about "climate change" or "climate disruption.")

God's Not Dead: Refute Atheism: God is Required for Meaning

Christianity is certain and unavoidable. It, alone, rejects man’s autonomy. Human beings are not omniscient or omnipotent, thus humanity cannot account for the immutable universals in the laws of logic and mathematics without God. The Christian worldview declares that God has spoken and there is real meaning. Christianity declares a worldview that supplies a means to understand human experience. It announces that the sovereign God has revealed knowledge of Himself and the cosmos. All non-Christian worldviews including naturalism are autonomous and cannot provide the truth conditions for the intelligibility of the world because they are non-universal and self-defeating.

24
John Perkins on the Difference Jesus Makes

The uniqueness is that you depend upon God. Even when things happen that people assume are natural, we expect the supernatural and expect God to do something beyond and better than you and I can do. I guess you would call that having faith and hope.

25
Was Adam a Historical Person?

So then, the Bible requires us to believe that Adam was a historical person. Now, taking up our second question, what are we to make of the argument that nothing in the gospel would be lost if we were to deny Adam’s historicity? May we uphold universal sin and death while discounting the way in which the Scripture says sin and death entered the world? The answer is no. The Bible does not give us that option. It clearly teaches that sin entered the world through the one action of one historical man, Adam (Rom. 5:12). If we reject the Bible’s account of a historical point of entry for sin into human existence, then, as Richard Gaffin has rightly observed, sin is no longer a matter of “human fallenness.” It is a matter of “human givenness.” It is just the way that human beings are.

26
Establishing the Gospels’ Reliability | Reasonable Faith

Notice that these “criteria” do not presuppose the general reliability of the Gospels. Rather they focus on a particular saying or event and give evidence for thinking that specific element of Jesus’ life to be historical, regardless of the general reliability of the document in which the particular saying or event is reported. These same “criteria” are thus applicable to reports of Jesus found in the apocryphal Gospels, or rabbinical writings, or even the Qur’an. Of course, if the Gospels can be shown to be generally reliable documents, so much the better! But the “criteria” do not depend on any such presupposition. They serve to help spot historical kernels even in the midst of historical chaff. Thus we need not concern ourselves with defending the Gospels’ every claim attributed to Jesus in the gospels; the question will be whether we can establish enough about Jesus to make faith in him reasonable.

27
Ann Coulter’s Casual Cruelty

Ms. Coulter’s biblical illiteracy is evident in taking a verse from Deuteronomy (15:11) and building a doctrine that argues that serving people outside of your nation is a violation of God’s word and ways. The logic of her column is that until every problem in your nation is solved, no person should serve as a missionary to other lands. This doctrine would surprise St. Paul, whose missionary journeys took him to (among other places) modern-day Syria, Turkey, Greece and Rome. If Ms. Coulter wants to defend her peculiar missiology and hyper-nationalism, she needs to find sources other than the Bible.

Ben Carson's Ebola Comments Refuted: Chances Extremely Low to Zero of Anyone Being Infected By Treating American Victims in US

"Becoming infected is a multiplicity of factors coming together," Dr. Hassad noted. "Yes, a person can be infected when he/she visits a country where the disease is active, like West Africa. But for the average American, the odds are almost zero. The two patients who we are currently treating were infected overseas and are being treated here. Because of healthier systems and an abundance of resources, there is an abundance of caution being used and extreme containment measures. It's extremely low to zero that you'll see any people infected because of the two we are treating here."

7 Bible Verses That Will Encourage You to Forgive Those Who Hurt You

We do not only forgive for others to make them feel better, but also to help our spiritual growth. As Christians we choose to live out the love of God as the purpose of our life, without forgiveness this is not possible. We are all sinners and we should forgive others when they sin.

Ligonier.org

Contemporary culture prizes independence and autonomy. The spirit of the day is one of self-determination and personal fulfillment, in which all people—at least in theory—are free to go where they please, do what they want, be who they want to be, and make their own decisions. Against this backdrop, the words of Jesus in John 3 are shocking. One of the most striking features of the imagery of new birth is the utter helplessness of the person being born. By describing the event of coming to faith as new birth, Jesus makes it clear that the initiative comes entirely from God and that fallen human beings are unable to gain spiritual life on their own.

Earth-Bound Parenting

After I calmed down and began to pray, the Lord got a hold of my hard heart and opened my dim eyes so I could recognize the beauty of this moment. There’s Going to Be a New Season of ‘Arrested Development’

I t appears Netflix believes there’s still money left in the banana stand. Last night, Will Arnett visited the Tonight Show , and Jimmy Fallon asked Gob Bluth the question everyone wants to know the answer to: Have we seen the last of the Bluth family? Arnett confirmed that even though there’s no timeline in place for the return, Netflix is bringing back Arrested Development for a fifth season. Let’s just hope the teamed learned from some of the mistakes of the poorly received fourth season (non-linear episodes, breaking up the cast, overly long scenes) and returns to the formula that made the show great in the first place. Otherwise, this could be a huge mistake ...

38 The Doctrine Debate - Christian Research Institute

Your initial response might be, “Of course it is, heretics have been challenging the foundations of the church since its inception!” and that is true, but today’s attack not only targets particular doctrines held integral to true Christian faith (e.g. the Trinity, the incarnation, the existence of a literal hell, the inerrancy of Scriptures), it also undermines the idea of doctrine itself, labeling it antiquated, irrelevant, and downright divisive. What’s more, this assault on the heart of creedal Christianity is occurring not only from outside the church, but from inside as well.

39 Ken Ham Declares Aliens Eternally Doomed

I guess that my connection to some authors of the YE Ilk are such that when they are challenged about their views there is no mechansim for rebuttal, its a sort of protectionism, I wrote AIG on a subject to get a response form one of the authors and I was told they do not respond. Since this was a AIG peer reviewed paper I thought some of my information from a YE perspective was worthy of consideration but apparently it doesn’t work that way. When I sent a post to the blog on Alien life to one of the authors which you had sent with respect to Ken Ham, I received no answer. So I suggest people put stuff out there and there is no mechansim or consideration at all for any academic exchange what so ever. So I was glad that you had responded, apparently you have more clout than me because the person mentioned your name specifically. So that’s o.k. and that is what I meant.

After the sermons were over, Graham invited those who wanted to commit their life to Jesus to come forward to the stage. The people who came up were met by pre-trained counselors from the local churches that also spoke the local language, Pidgen. The Counselors took the individuals to a tent behind the stage where they would spiritually counsel them and get their contact information so that local churches can follow up and continue guiding them spiritually.

The Apostle Paul exhorts us from the book of Romans, saying, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” Christians are not to be cantankerous and difficult to get along with. Instead, we are to be people who seek harmony and relational peace whenever we can. That does not mean, however, that we compromise the truth for the sake of peace. Peace that is not grounded in God’s truth is no peace at all. There comes a time when we must draw a line in the sand, when we must stand firm for the foundational doctrines of our faith.

Mental Illness and the Healing of Jesus — Part 2

I understand that concern, and actually share it. In fact, I used to avoid the language of healing with regard to spiritual issues for the same reason. Then I grew in my understanding of the authority and sufficiency of Scripture. The authority and sufficiency of Scripture means that we must not allow secular psychology to have the role of determining how we speak about the counseling problems people face or their solutions. God gets to decide how we refer to the issues people face in their lives, not psychology. If we refuse ever to use the language of healing for spiritual matters, we’re guilty of the same kind of rejection of the sufficiency of Scripture as those who insist on referring to teenage rebellion as obstinate defiant disorder. Neither person is using God’s language to describe problems and solutions.

http://christianmomthoughts.com/4-reasons-christian-parents-need-to-care-more-about-atheism/?utm_content=buffer234b4&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

I saw the Atheist Channel on our family’s Roku last night and asked my husband about it. This is a HUGE issue in my family because my brother-in-law is an atheist (and a militant one, not just merely embracing atheism for “convenience” factors) and therefore has turned my sister into an agnostic. They have three kids, expecting #4 in March. I love my sister dearly, but I am praying for her daily and raising my daughter as a born-again Christian. I know that with four cousins who will grow up with NO KNOWLEDGE OF GOD and a ton of Christianity-bashing from their father especially, this will pose a HUGE threat to my daughter’s faith. Folks, atheism is on the rise and it is A SERIOUS CONCERN. These aren’t just wayward people who have wandered from the faith, but some of them like my brother-in-law have taken an aggressive stance against it. We need to pray for atheists, let them see God’s love in us, and make sure we educate our children about what the Bible says about nonbelievers. This isn’t an issue we can or should sugar coat with our kids.
