These Women Celebrated Being Freed from ISIS by Burning Their Burqas

A small group of women in Manbij, Syria celebrated their liberation from ISIS control by burning their burqas. After several weeks of battle, fighters from the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces were able to push ISIS out of the city and rescue 3,000 peoople. ISIS had forced the women in Manbij to wear the garments that covered their bodies from head to toe whenever they were in public, so in the public square, they burned their burqas signifying their metaphorical and literal liberation.

Meet the Teenage Syrian Olympic Swimmer Who Saved Refugees from Drowning at Sea

Meet 18-year-old Yusra Mardini. Born in Syria, the world-class swimmer will compete with a team of 10 refugees from around the world at this year’s Summer Olympic Games in Rio, but her story of heroism is even more inspiring than her athletic achievements. As she explained to The Independent, as a child in Syria “Sometimes we couldn’t train because of the war. And sometimes you would be swimming in pools where the roofs were [blown open] in three or four places.” After years of war, she and her sister fled Syria, eventually making it to Turkey where they planned on taking a dangerous, overcrowded boat to Greece, in search of a better life in Europe. Most of the people on the boat couldn’t swim. As the paper explains, Only a half hour into their journey across the Aegean Sea, the boat’s engine broke down. Mardini and her sister—along with the only two other people on the boat who could swim—jump into the water, and pushed and pulled the boat for three hours in open water. I had one hand with the rope attached to the boat as I moved my two legs and one arm. It was three and half hours in cold water. Your body is almost like … done. I don’t know if I can describe that. Today, her and her sister live in Germany, and she is proud to not only compete in the Olympic games, but to also challenge the way the world sees refugees. She explained at a press conference: I want everyone to think refugees are normal people who had their homelands and lost them not because they wanted to run away and be refugees, but because they have dreams in their lives and they had to go. Everything is about trying to get a new and better life and by entering the stadium we are encouraging everyone to pursue their dreams.

This Unbelievable Artist Draws Things That Look 3-D

Nikola Čuljić, a 30-year-old artist in Serbia, makes two-dimensional drawings that look like they were expertly done in 3-D. Čuljić's profiled on Bored Panda, a website filled with people's art, design and photography work, revealed that he has only been drawing for less than three years. "I started drawing portraits and it was hard ... so I decided to draw something different, something [rare]." Čuljić also said he uses colored pencils, markers and pastels. Check out this video Čuljić compiled featuring him spinning the finished pieces around to prove they really are just two-dimensional.

Be Known for What You’re for, Not Just What You’re Against

Do Christians know what they actually are for? Can they articulate it in a graceful and non-judging way? Do they understand God's story and what he is actually trying to do? Can they communicate the positives of God's plan for sex, money, justice, marriage, humility, economics, etc.? Can they continue to watch the secularization of society and not fight against it but instead offer a new way full of life and hope and peace? Will their lives reflect theses truths or will it reflect compromise and hypocrisy?

3
Christians Have to Care About Injustice in the World

This is why Christians like John Newton (who penned "Amazing Grace"), William Wilberforce, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and others considered it their Christian duty to fight to challenge the injustice of slavery. To do justice today is to follow the widow and the abolitionists’ example and work to undo the ways that we, in our fallen humanity, deny access and opportunities (economic, political, social, etc.) to the vulnerable. Whether it is the right to freedom that is taken in human trafficking or the right to due process in the criminal justice system, doing justice means securing these rights and opportunities “with liberty and justice for all.”

4
Complaining Doesn't Change Culture. Engaging It Does.

All the time I hear and read people talking about what’s wrong with the church: “We don’t really need the church,” “This isn’t what the church is supposed to be,” “I’m not being fed,” or “It’s full of hypocrites and fakes,” yet the biggest problem is the people who care enough to complain but not enough to act. That attitude is a blight on Godly community.

6 Metaxas Speaks Out, So Can You

Y'know ... as much as I appreciate the mission of Breakpoint, I grow soooooo weary of the perpetual bleating about abortion and gay rights! Yes, I understand the fundamentals of what the Word says about homosexuality and the guarding of potential life, BUT: IS THERE NO ROOM TO DISCUSS ANYTHING ELSE? Say, for example, the QUALITY OF LIFE of folk who AREN'T gay or women who DON'T have abortions? No matter how many times the commentators talk about the 'winsome' delivery of their 'truth to power' discussions, and blame 'liberal society' or 'humanism' or 'liberal media' or 'liberal education' or anything with the tag "liberal" does any of this come with taking responsibility for their part in the deterioration of REAL discussion on subjects like how come we neglected to teach our children how to treat one another? Or why weren't girls AND boys taught the proper place of sex in relationships, vs blaming schools for not teaching something parents thought they had no right to teach? Or why is it that few people care about what happens to a baby after it gets here, since no one thought it necessary to teach the young woman how to be a parent? How is it the simplest thing in the world to dismiss the position of a scientist/teacher/politician/athlete/author/SHARECROPPER who might have an idea to make society better IF they are "pro-choice" or don't find gay people subversive? Granted, I personally would never have or even consider an abortion, and I firmly believe what the Word says about the Natural order of things; HOWEVER, since I have neither heaven nor hell to put folk in because they don't agree with me, and it IS an individual believer's choice to be obedient or not (realizing the consequences of said choice), MY job is to do what the Lord instructed and treat them as I would expect to be treated.

All of Us Sinners, None of Us Freaks

In other words, according to the pattern of creation, chromosomes cannot be re-engineered, removed, or scrubbed from the software of our bodies. It may be possible for a trans-woman to “pass” for a woman on the street at the visual level, but it is not possible for a man to morph himself into a biological woman, with all the experiences and functions of natural femaleness. The biological narrative doesn’t exist. While medical advances make it possible to suppress or change some of the outward appearances of our bodies, and change our patterns of speech and dress, it is not possible to raze our bodies to the ground and rebuild them without shortcutting all the essential formative experiences that make the biological gender authentic.

9 Liberals and Conservatives Can Freak Out Together

New Boko Haram Leader to Followers: Focus on Killing Christians

The ISIS newspaper al-Nabaa announced that a man named Abu Musab al-Barnawi will now lead the Nigeria-based terrorist group and will make it their mission to fight “Christianization of society” (as translated by the SITE Intelligence Group). He said that instead of targeting fellow Muslims at mosques and market places, they’ll also be focusing their efforts to attack Christian humanitarian groups. He explained, “They exploit the condition of those who are displaced under the raging war, providing them with food and shelter and then Christianizing their children.”

Can Christians claim to have the One, True God?

Imagine looking at a police lineup and telling the officer that person #4 committed the crime. What would you say if the officer responded by saying, “There are four other possible suspects… but only your guy is the right one-you’re a joke.” I don’t think you would say “Good point officer, I guess we are done here.” If this objection worked, defense attorneys could win every trial by saying “Roughly 7 billion people in the world; and only yours is the right one? You must be a genius and everyone else is dumb to not pick yours.” There’s a reason we don’t see this objection being used with police or in court.

Use discretion, but make sure they understand that it’s the gates of hell that shall not prevail against Christ and his church — not the other way around.

Where Shame Loses Its Power

Yet hiding behind our friendly smiles and polite pleasantries are real life issues; the ones that don’t fit neatly into everyday conversations. Churches preach the benefits of living in community, yet we somehow forget that living in true community is guaranteed to be messy and complicated. While we talk of authenticity, Church often remains a place where you can’t be honest.

Treating the Gospel Like a Cookie Rather Than a Cure | Cold Case Christianity

There is a relationship between our categorization of Christian claims and our desire to share them with the world around us. Some of us hesitate to share the Gospel because (whether we care to admit it or not) we’ve come to see religious truth as a matter of subjective opinion rather than objective truth . We treat the Gospel more as a cookie than a cure. That’s why I think it’s important to help young Christians understand how the evidence supports the claims of the New Testament authors. As college students grow in their confidence, their view of Christianity subtly shifts from opinion to objective conviction. When that happens, they are far more likely to share the Gospel with others, courageously defend what they believe and boldly represent Christ in our culture.

Our Priorities Are Off When Family Is More Important Than Church

F or several years, I served in a church that was known for its commitment to world missions. Many of our college kids were called into full-time cross-cultural ministry, including a bright young man named Bill. The reaction of his parents, however, caught Bill by surprise. His family had supported missionaries financially, prayed for them, and even fed them Sunday lunch when they were on furlough from the field. But the idea of their son giving his life to overseas missions was too much for Bill’s parents. They wanted Bill to find steady employment and raise a nice Christian family—one that supports missions, of course—like they had.

Meet the Rio Olympians Who Put God Before Gold

“Knowing that I’m a child of God and that his love for me is determined by nothing I can achieve or do on my own has given me a quiet confidence,” DiRado told CT. “My faith has helped me chart my own course and pursue my goals when people around me may be going in different directions. Jesus’ love for me and all humanity is something that always helps me better love people around me when things get difficult.” When asked what she thinks God does care about as she prepares for Rio, DiRado replied, “I think God cares about my soul and whether I’m bringing his love and mercy into the world. Can I be a loving, supportive teammate, and can I bless others around me in the same way God has been so generous with me?” The California native is projected to medal in at least two of her events.

Remembering Marc Lee. If you’ve ever read the book or seen the movie “ American Sniper ,” the name Marc Lee may be familiar to you. He was featured prominently in both. I never met Marc Lee, but I think of him every time I speak at Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs, Colorado, which is where I spent most of last week. Summit is a two-week apologetics and worldview camp. As a teenager, Lee attended Summit twice. He later studied Bible at The Master’s College in California, considering becoming a pastor before choosing instead to become a Navy SEAL. A plaque commemorating Lee’s life is prominently displayed in the main classroom at Summit, because Marc Lee was the first Navy SEAL killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lee’s Silver Star citation (awarded posthumously) reads in part: “To protect the lives of his teammates, he fearlessly exposed himself to direct enemy fire by engaging the enemy with his machine gun and was mortally wounded in the engagement. His brave actions in the line of fire saved the lives of many of his teammates. Petty Officer Lee's courageous leadership, operational skill, and selfless dedication to duty, reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The Cost of Nondiscipleship

Instead of walking away, climb. Climb whatever sycamore you must in order to get a glimpse of Jesus. Christ is the real gain (Philippians 3:8). Christ is the real treasure (Matthew 13:44). The Spirit causes a treasure-transfer to happen as we look to Jesus. Look until you see him. Ask, seek, knock (Luke 11:9). Climb. And when you see him, like Zacchaeus, you will with joy give away what used to capture your heart rather than lose the treasure of Christ.

Is Evolution a Theory in Crisis? This Biochemist Says Yes. | The Stream

I think the best explanation is special creation of animal families with a high degree of variability built into the originating species. As speciation occurred genetic information was lost and the ability of many animals of the same family to interbreed was also lost. So in a sense, there is common ancestry but only to the extent of animals in the same family. I think that it is quite obvious there cannot be only a single common ancestor to all life, even if you exclude human life as I have seen some Christian apologist attempt to do. Humans are amongst the least varied creatures on earth with almost no inability to breed between any healthy pair, even with rh incompatibility, the pair should be able to have one healthy offspring, whereas many animals, even of the same animal families are not able to conceive. It could be that special creation accounts for any animals that are not about to interbreed, but I think speciation due to genetic information loss is a better explanation for the diversity and it could have been planned that way all along by the Designer to diversify animals.

33 The Briefing 08-04-16 - AlbertMohler.com

The really interesting thing about this development late yesterday is the fact that the Court handed down this order. Even though it’s temporary, it’s still at this point very significant. One of the most interesting things this points to is the fact that the issue eventually will find itself before the nation’s highest court, and we’ll find ourselves once again in the position of the fact that eight or nine unelected judges will be making a decision about how all Americans will live on such a basic and very intimate issue. But the other thing this points to is the fact that those who are trying to push this moral revolution have pushed the transgender issue ahead of where either the law or public policy or practice can actually follow. We’ve seen this again and again, but in this case coming from Virginia, it’s clear that even those who want to champion this moral revolution and to declare the transgender revolution is a settled fact, they can’t actually figure out how to make it work in terms of actual places with actual people such as an actual public school in the state of Virginia.

Is Evolution a Religion?

We are sure that many people will find the question posed as the title of this chapter a little strange. Surely, evolution is about the origin and development of life-forms on earth—what has this got to do with religion? Evolution is science, isn’t it? And we are told that it has got to be separate from religious belief—at least in the classroom! Well, let’s see if evolution fits the bill as a true science as opposed to a religious belief. In order to do so, we must define some terms.

39 http://truthbomb.blogspot.com/2014/07/is-apologetics-practical.html

Many times it is necessary for the Christian case maker to make an apologetic for apologetics.  We must be equipped to defend and persuade fellow believers that apologetics is vital and biblical. I recall once sitting across the desk of a pastor who said, "Apologetics is useful, sure, but I am meeting with men and women who's marriages are falling apart.  How is apologetics going to help me then?" At the time I didn't have an answer for him and I actually thought the point was a valid one.  However, one day while reading the book of Titus this assumption was challenged.  In this letter to Titus the Apostle Paul is writing to give him [Titus] "personal authorization and guidance in meeting opposition, instructions about faith and conduct, and warnings about false teachers." [1] It was Paul's qualifications for elders that caught my eye.  He writes: "...holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.  For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families , teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.

John Piper’s Funeral Prayer for a Family of Five

For these parents — grandparents, great-grandparents — who sit with pieces of thread in their hands from a fabric of life woven from the womb, and then consumed. Father, we ask that you would sustain in their hearts an unshakeable confidence that the countless hours of investment in Jamison and Kathryne and the children were not in vain. Because your promise in 1 Corinthians 15:58 that their labors were not in vain is built with a mighty “therefore” on the massive foundation of the greatest chapter in the Bible about the blood-bought resurrection of Christ and his people from the dead.

42
God of Love?

Increasingly today, “love” for many involves control and manipulation, seeking maximum self-gratification in return for minimum commitment. It could be argued that this is due, at least in part, to the widespread influence of atheism and naturalistic evolution in public life, particularly in schools. If children are told that there is no God, no ultimate purpose, no universal standard for moral behavior; that they are utterly insignificant, the result of chance chemical interactions on a cosmic stage; that survival of the fittest is the most important factor in the evolution and furtherance of the human race—is it really any wonder that much of society is obsessed with hedonism and violence? This approach to life is the complete opposite of what the Bible teaches about love and its associated humility, mercy, kindness, and faithfulness.

The Inexplicable Fine-Tuning of the Foundational Forces in Our Universe - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

Forces Governing the Creation of Chemicals Are Favorable to Life: The earliest elements in the universe, hydrogen and helium, are insufficient for the existence of carbon-based life forms unless joined by carbon, oxygen and the other necessary elements. These secondary elements were formed in stars, but the process by which these stars converted hydrogen and helium to carbon was an incredibly fine-tuned process. Even small alterations in the laws of physics would have prevented the formation of elements critical to the existence of life. Susskind puts it this way: “In the beginning there were only hydrogen and helium: certainly not sufficient for the foundation of life. Carbon, oxygen, and all the others came later. They were formed in the nuclear reactors in the interiors of stars. But the ability of stars to transmute hydrogen and helium into the all-important carbon nuclei was a very delicate affair. Small changes in the laws of electricity and nuclear physics could have prevented the formation of carbon.”

A Better Way to Think About Relationships Than 'I Kissed Dating Goodbye'

great discussion to have!!! i think my biggest takeaway and life experience from dating is that there's no perfect way to date that altogether avoids heartbreak or disappointment. We live in a time where people give up on dating cause they're afraid to get burned. I remember beating myself up and sinking into such depression and apathy from a failed relationship because I prayed without ceasing for God's will to happen and everything panned out perfectly over the course of 1 1/2 years of a developed relationship until I experienced unrequited love. I can't fathom why God allowed me to experience such heartbreak but now looking back I gained so much perspective on God's heart and learned to channel my hurts and frustrations through writing music. Every relationship has its unique journey and I'd say find the biblical/Godly wisdom that would best steer you in your dating situation :)
