How to Protect Endangered Religious Groups You Admire

They also give food, clothing, shelter, counsel, and comfort to millions of Americans in need. They offer some of the most important and desperately needed health, educational, and social services in the country. And they provide billions of dollars and thousands of full-time workers for international relief aid that serves vulnerable migrants, refugees, and persecuted minorities. The work of religious organizations has long been and continues to be central both to religious believers’ lives and to the welfare of others. Our communities—and, indeed, communities around the globe—would be much worse off without these organizations and their faith-informed good works.

Can Naturalism Account for Human Dignity and Value? | Cold Case Christianity

Why do we, as humans, feel obligated toward other humans when we don’t recognize moral obligations toward other forms of life on the planet? We seldom hesitate to exterminate the rodents and insects in our homes and we feel no moral obligation toward the weeds growing in our garden. What, from a naturalistic perspective, gives us the right to consider humans differently? Can we stay “inside the room” of the universe to explain why humans ought to be honored with dignity and value when we don’t afford these considerations to other species or forms of life?

Communicating Truth in Our Late-Modern Moment

Taylor introduces A Secular Age by saying his goal is to define and trace what took us “from a society in which it was virtually impossible not to believe in God to one in which faith, even for the staunchest believer, is one human possibility among others” (3). This is a question all preachers today must consider as we seek to proclaim Christ in our late-modern age. It’s as every bit as relevant for pastors in the rural Midwest as it is for those in New York. And, arguably, no one has thought about this question (in terms of homiletics) more than Tim Keller.

4
Whose body parts are they?

To maintain that this “tissue” is merely part of the mother that is being donated or sold for research (or whatever purposes) is absurd on its face. One would have to actually believe–not just argue for the sake of maintaining their position–that during pregnancy, a mother grows new parts of her body such as a brain, legs, and the like, which are all characterized by different DNA (unless cloned) and around 50% of the time has a different gender. That is, not to put too fine a point on it, one would have to actually claim that women grow penises.

Is Apologetics a Waste of Time?

One of the most enjoyable courses I taught over my time at Bethany was an introduction to Christian apologetics.  This involved a basic overview of some persistent objections to the Christian faith and discussion around what could be offered in response.  It was always a privilege to get into these conversations – partially because many students were considering the issues for the first time and partially because there is something invigorating about opening up big questions with big implications.

Planned Parenthood Runs Zero Licensed Mammogram Clinics

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s top abortion provider, swears up and down that notwithstanding the numerous admissions made on tape by its top officials, the organization doesn’t buy or sell organs and body parts harvested from aborted babies. Then, in order to defend its reputation, Planned Parenthood points to other medical procedures performed by the group that don’t result in body counts. One of its top rhetorical gimmicks is to reference all the mammograms that women can receive by visiting Planned Parenthood :

Secretary Clinton, Answer The Question

Hi, this is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. I saw a video today from Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that is truly disturbing. In trying to address the current controversy on whether there should be federal funding for Planned Parenthood Clinics, Secretary Clinton says that Republicans are against funding for women’s healthcare. Well nothing could be further from the truth and let me use my state, New Jersey, as an example. We generously fund federally qualified health clinics throughout New Jersey, which provides excellent care for women and men in our state who need it. Everything from cancer screenings and mammograms for women to prostate cancer screenings for men to diabetes treatment and to everything in between that can lead folks to greater healthcare available to them and can lead to greater health results for each and every person who walks through the door. Now you see, the real issue here that Secretary Clinton won’t address—is the conduct of Planned Parenthood. Do you think that Planned Parenthood should be able to use federal funding to kill children in the womb in a specific way, so that they can maximize the value of body parts that they then sell on the open market for profit? I’ll tell you that I think most common sense Americans believe that that conduct is reprehensible, should not occur at all, and certainly should not be funded with tax payer dollars.

The Gospel in India

Vivek : Marg , which means “The Way” in most Indian languages, seeks to permeate cities with communities of faith. We have three churches in Pune that live as believing communities among the people God has brought us to. The ministry depends greatly on the people of the church. My role is to equip them for ministry and to work alongside them. We engage our neighborhoods relationally and open up our lives so that the neighborhood sees what it means to be disciples of Jesus in the everyday stuff of life. The church’s familial orientation throughout the week is integral to our witness. We disciple one another in life-on-life situations and through ordered learning as we seek to faithfully teach the Bible and its implications for every sphere of life. Equally important is our emphasis on teaching our communities to consciously live by the life of Christ indwelling us and our fellow family members.

Stop Calling It 'Short-Term' Missions

I have had a long-term problem with short-term mission trips...how in the world can a 15 year old going to a mission location for a week or two possibly be doing anything but learning? I have never given contributions to "support raising" efforts for these trips (sorry, friends) because - Craig gets it just right - these trips are about exposure to a different culture, to learn about whether a young person may have a calling to the mission field. For some, it is simply "How I spent my summer vacation". Parents are responsible for their children's educations and vacations - I don't "raise support" for my children's piano lessons. I don't ask other people to foot the bill for my child to go to London or Mexico or Haiti for a couple of weeks. A lot of money and effort are expended by churches on behalf of these "short term" efforts, money and effort that would be better spent on behalf of missionaries committed to the field they are working in - long term.

What Surrendering to God Looks Like

I was so surprised. I remember just sitting there and absorbing this peace like, “Hey, you know what, I’m OK.” Now, I definitely apologized and I tried to make right, but I also left it and didn’t let it define me—and I didn’t let it define my actions going forward. I was like, “God, this is what life change looks like. This is what you’ve been talking about when I read verses about freedom.” This is the intangible thing that changes and shifts in your soul when you truly love God more than anything else on earth. That’s what I hope happens for people is that they would experience that shift.

30
Away With Utilitarian Arguments Against Abortion

But I don’t think Christians should use this argument against abortion, and here’s why: It assigns value based on (presumed) accomplishments. It is a utilitarian argument — assigning intrinsic value based on one’s “utility” (usefulness) — and it is utilitarian arguments that are best suited for pro-choice arguments, not for pro-life. In any event, those contemplating abortion are already employing utilitarianism in their thinking. e.g. “This child will have a poor life, so it is best to prevent him from experiencing it.” “This child will interfere with my plans for the future, so it is best to terminate my pregnancy until I am really ready.”

The Church Is a Leadership Factory

We should expect God’s Spirit to be leading our people the same way he led Philip, Apollos, Barnabas, and Silas—all “laypeople”—in the book of Acts. Luke says that when Paul was waiting in Athens, God’s Spirit provoked him to do something about the idolatry he saw. Shouldn’t we expect the Spirit to put those same provocations in the hearts of our people in their contexts? Just as God didn’t put his Spirit into only a few ordained leaders, he does not put the Spirit’s ideas into only a few heads.

I’ve asked the professional counselors in our church, “What’s the biggest problem you encounter?” They say over and over, “People wait too long before they ask for help. Then it’s almost impossible to turn around.” There will be warning signs all over the place in a marriage, and then all of a sudden the husband or wife walks out. The one that’s left behind asks, “What can I do now?” Not a whole lot. You should have been working on it sooner. Most people are in denial and wait until it’s too late, and they go through unnecessary pain.

It’s Not Just Black & White

But it is not just the Christian world where people find “black” and “white” twins incredible—it is also shocking to the secular world. They are surprised because they ignore the Bible’s account that we all came from one race (begun by the first man and woman, Adam and Eve) and dispersed as a result of the Tower of Babel, which led to the formation of people groups (Asians, Caucasians, and so on). They assume, instead, that human groups are deeply divided by significant variations over tens or hundreds of thousands of years and that different people groups originated from different “ancestral apes.”

39 Who Is The Real Jesus: The Jesus Of The Bible Or The Jesus Of The Qur’an? | Reasonable Faith

I propose to answer that question as a historian. I shall look at the New Testament and the Qur’an as the historian looks at any other sources for ancient history. I shall not treat them as inspired or holy books. Accordingly, I shall not require them to be inerrant or infallible in order to be valuable historical sources. By taking this historical approach, we prevent the discussion from degenerating into arguments over Bible difficulties or Qur’anic inconsistencies. The question is not whether the sources are inerrant but whether they allow us to discover who the historical Jesus really was.

Renewing Your Mind | A Puny God | August 4, 2015

If the church has a low view of God, its light will be dim, and the darkness will not be pushed back. Today, our concept of God is often sentimental rather than biblically based. Many people embrace what has been called "moralistic therapeutic deism," a view of God that says He exists to make us feel good about ourselves, and that He involves Himself in our lives only to affirm us and solve our problems. As long as we do not properly grasp the transcendent majesty and holiness of God, our light will not pierce the darkness. In this message, Dr. Steven J. Lawson proclaims the centrality of a high, biblical view of the Lord, calling upon God to restore the truth about His transcendent majesty and holiness in His church.

41 Unions Refuse Comment on Why They Give Planned Parenthood Hundreds of Thousands in Donations

Candace Cameron Bure Talks 'Fuller House' and 'The View'

And yet within Christians, everyone has a different set of standards, and that’s why it was important for me to say, “Hey, these are what my convictions are, you may not agree with my conviction as a Christian, but at the end of the day, I will stand before God on my own, you’ll stand before God on your own, so if you have a different standard, great, you’re gonna talk to him about it, I’m gonna talk to him about it, I’ll have to deal with my own consequences.” That’s where I stand, but I feel like the biggest misconception about the word “modesty” in general is just that it’s restricted to hemlines and necklines and clothes, when modesty is so much more about our character, and the way we carry ourselves, and the way we speak and act. That was the thing that I wanted to get across the most, because the Bible doesn’t really talk about hemlines.

William Wilberforce was the British Member of Parliament who led the fight to abolish the slave trade. It is especially a good time to see the scene where Wilberforce has arranged for a pleasure cruise of British lords and ladies to pass by the moored slave ship Madagascar. Are Christian High School Students Really Ready for College?

I just wanted to let you know how much you were right! (Not that there was ever a question:)) I went to college orientation last week and they taught us about tolerance   and not pushing your beliefs on others. ‘Your beliefs are your beliefs and let’s keep them that way’ was a major thing. We had to play a ‘get to know you’ game and we were    asked about religion. I freely told people I was a Christian and afterward definitely got the cold shoulder. This was at the end of the day so I had already made some friends, but  after I told them that it was almost as if the [person] that they had met earlier had ceased  to exist. When our group leader talked to us about accepting everyone as they are and    not trying to change them it was almost like he was talking directly to me. A couple of the students made it their personal mission to either offend me or change my beliefs; I’m not sure which they had in mind. One made a comment and started out with, ‘Let’s say God  ACTUALLY exists. . . .’  I was most upset by the fact that they were allowed to attack me like this. Not that I would have, but had I made a mean comment about their atheism or unitarianism I feel certain I would have gotten in trouble.

Losing Faith: Tips for Christian Parents Whose Teen Is Not Interested in Church (EXCLUSIVE)

Dad Says: The Bible gives us a very interesting promise on this subject in Proverbs 22:6: "Raise up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." (KJB). Note that the Bible doesn't promise anything about when he is a teenager or in his twenties. It's not surprising in our aggressively secular culture that some of our kids will struggle to make the faith their own. That's where we must show patience, hope and lots of love. We can be patient because we know that we serve a great God who loves our kids even more than we do (hard to believe – but true).

Water Pollution Is a Christian Concern!

The Bible recognizes how profound our need for water is by using it to illustrate the most important thing we need to know about God: His steadfast love (Ps. 137:1, 37). And clean water is used by Christians to perform one of our most important sacraments: baptism, which symbolizes the cleansing of our sins. No one would want a child to be baptized in dirty water.
