The Place and Purpose of Parachurch Ministries

My concern with parachurch ministries on college campuses is that they often don’t simply come alongside the churce; they replace it. In the middle of the 20th century, men like Bright and Dawson Trotman rightly recognized that churches weren’t effectively engaging students. They rightly wanted to fix this problem. If not carefully monitored, however, their ministries may inadvertently strip our Lord’s disciple-making mandate from the very institution to which it belongs.

A Christian College President Falls

Fields had interviewed Epting several times while working for the college newspaper as a student. He said Epting was well-loved on campus. The first time they met was when Fields was on a campus tour as a prospective student. Epting ran into the tour group and welcomed them warmly with hugs, he said. That one encounter made North Greenville feel like home from the start. Now his feelings for the school have begun to sour.

Resurrection: The Critical Evidence for Christianity Part 8

Upon completion of this course, students should possess an enhanced ability to understand and explain: How to respond to typical objections to the resurrection; Issues related to the Shroud of Turin; The apostolic witness; The potential for miracles; The objectivity of historical knowledge; The historical reliability of the New Testament; The historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus; The folly of naturalistic objections; The relevance of Jesus resurrection for today.

Tactics: the worst mistake a Christian can make when doing apologetics

First situation. I was talking with a lady who is an atheist. I had a copy of “God’s Crime Scene” in my hand, and she asked me about it. I told her that it was a book written by the guy who solved the homicide case that I asked her to watch on Dateline. She remembered – it was the two-hour special on the woman who was killed with a garrotte. She pointed at the book and said “what’s in it?” I said, it has 8 pieces of evidence that fit better with a theistic worldview than with an atheistic one, and some of them scientific. Her reply to me was – literally – “which denomination do you want me to join?”

‘My Pastor Is on the Ashley Madison List.’

Based on my conversations with leaders from several denominations in the U.S. and Canada, I estimate that at least 400 church leaders (pastors, elders, staff, deacons, etc.) will be resigning Sunday. This is a significant moment of embarrassment for the church—and it should be. To be honest, the number of pastors and church leaders on Ashley Madison is much lower than the number of those looking to have an affair. Yet, there is still much that we must consider in the midst of the embarrassment.

My Wife's Plea to Christian Men

Over the weekend I could see that Aileen had something on her mind. We spoke and she told me about reading the news, about seeing more Christian men fall into scandal, and, in the face of it all, her confusion, her despair, the crumbling of her hope. I asked if she would write about it. Here is what she said.

The Most Important Thing Your Church Is Probably Missing

I went back to our church and confessed that I had been leading them wrongly. “Our goal,” I said, “should not be to build a great big church. It is to reach our city with the Gospel and get the Gospel into places around the world where Jesus is not known. If God grows our church in the process of that, so be it. But if He takes from us some of our best resources and people and sends them out to start new works, that’s OK, too.”

13 Digital surveillance 'worse than Orwell', says new UN privacy chief

However, Cannataci says we are dealing with a world even worse that anything Orwell could have foreseen. “It’s worse,” he said. “Because if you look at CCTV alone, at least Winston [Winston Smith in Orwell’s novel 1984] was able to go out in the countryside and go under a tree and expect there wouldn’t be any screen, as it was called. Whereas today there are many parts of the English countryside where there are more cameras than George Orwell could ever have imagined. So the situation in some cases is far worse already.

VMA Hangover. . . Thoughts The Morning After. . .

Hyper-sexuality void of borders and boundaries in terms of both our sexual practices and sexual identity choices. Anything is an option. It’s a narcissistic me-first kind of sexuality that takes God’s good gift and totally drains it of any kind of God-glorifying indulgence. Rather, we indulge our sexuality however we desire and please. It was there from start to finish last night. Some examples. . . Demi Lovato’s steamy live performance of “”Cool For the Summer” with Iggy Azalea. . . mentions and celebrations of the SCOTUS decision. . . Cyrus’s final performance being introduced by a parade of transgendered, etc. folks from her Happy Hippie Foundation. . . her actual performance of “Dooo It!” featuring a stage full of dancing drag queens. . . and Taylor Swift’s steamy new video for “Wildest Dreams” along with these words she uttered when receiving her “Video of the Year” award: “I’m just happy that in 2015 we live a world where boys can play princesses and girls can play soldiers.”

One Strategy to Rule Them All

But learning to respond to every competing worldview would take a lifetime of study. Do we have to memorize a different argument for every “ism”? The exciting answer is that the Bible itself offers a single, universal strategy we can apply to all systems of thought. The key passage is Romans 1. We could even call it Paul’s apologetics training manual.

When ‘Discernment’ Leads to Disaster

That 2000 CBF policy, still in effect, dates back to when an older generation was leading the CBF and it reflects the fact that many of the churches that were ready to join the CBF in the 1990 were not (yet) ready to endorse homosexuality. The CBF has no argument against homosexuality on biblical terms, so it is only a matter of time before it changes its policy. Even in 2000, the group announced the policy but claimed to take no “position” on homosexuality itself: “CBF values and respects the autonomy of each individual and local church to evaluate and make their own decision regarding social issues like homosexuality.”

8 Books to Read When You’re Struggling to Read the Bible

Of course, nothing can replace the Scriptures—nothing else contains the words of life—but I’m realizing that, more often than not, I need a gentle voice to guide my meditation. I need someone to speak the liturgy out loud so that I can repeat it. The metaphors and insights into the Bible that other writers offer in their books make me feel less alone. And by ushering me down the roads of their own faith journeys, they give me the courage to keep moving toward God.

A Secret Life of Prayer Will Prevent a Secret Life of Sin

There always seems to be some sort of news of a scandal or shameful practices concerning professing Christians. Somewhere a pastor or professing Christian’s secret life of rampant sin gets revealed. As a result, we all (rightly) lose our collective breaths and our stomaches turn.

Why We Never Find Our Identity Inside of Ourselves

And, of course, the Scriptures start not with what is wrong, but with what we are created for. So worship is also the experience of becoming like what we behold — like what we desire in the positive sense of that word — created, if you will, to reflect God, the whole God. So idolatry is kind of turning that dynamic upside down. But it is still a pretty natural dynamic in all of us. We still find our identity outside of ourselves. We don’t find out who we are by looking inside and so that is another conversation we can have as well.

Here’s What’s Really Holding You Back from Your Calling

Jesus said He is the Good Shepherd. When the sheep run past the Shepherd, He calls them to come back. You are His sheep, and He will do it in a way you can hear it. If He should have to call you back, it’s not a sign of going outside of God’s will. It’s a sign that there is something better in a different direction.

What Kind of Faith Helped People Survive Hurricane Katrina?

I saw faith spur congregations and organizations into action, from mucking out houses to providing much needed spiritual care. I heard clients report how central their faith was to their recovery. I met an out-of-state volunteer as we were both peering over the edge of what was left of the US 90 bridge in Biloxi. He remarked that it looked like Katrina had tossed the giant concrete slabs that had once been a bridge into the water, much like one might toss down a losing hand of cards in disgust. I asked him why he was volunteering and he replied, “My faith.” Lastly, I observed instances where faith either had the potential to or did cause significant distress. I remember attending a large congregation where the pastor taught that emotional struggles after Katrina were nothing more than signs of a weak spiritual life.

Inheritance of Tears: Trusting the Lord of Life When Death Visits the Womb

Suffering is not unique to Christians, but the way in which we experience it differs greatly from the way the rest of the world does. The Bible says we have been united to Christ in his death and resurrection (Rom. 6:5, 2 Cor. 4:10, Gal. 2:20) and that we, as his church, are members of his body (1 Cor. 12:27; Eph. 5:23). The unity between Jesus and his ransomed people greatly affects the way we suffer because it means we do not suffer alone. We face loss, pain, and death as those loved and comforted by our holy Savior. Jesus tasted death (Heb. 2:9) and experienced grief partly for the purpose of personally sympathizing with us . (65)

The World’s Most Astonished Atheist

When the United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki 70 years ago this month, Joy Davidman—best known today as the wife of C. S. Lewis—was in a vulnerable way. Nearly six months pregnant with her second son, she lived in Ossining, New York, with her toddler and her husband, the troubled novelist William (Bill) Lindsay Gresham. Jewish-born and Bronx-raised, Joy had been an atheist since childhood and became a card-carrying member of the Communist Party in her early 20s. But motherhood and a move to the suburbs had isolated her from comrades, setting her adrift from the Party and abruptly ending what had been a successful career in New York City as an award winning poet, editor, and film critic for the Communist magazine New Masses .

How Worry Warps Your View of God

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Many 2016 presidential candidates have church-shopped

The religious journey of Marco Rubio has more twists than a pretzel. By his account, he was baptized a Roman Catholic, then baptized a Mormon, then got his parents to return to the Catholic Church and to enroll him in parochial school, from which he quickly withdrew — all before he turned 13.

13 Things Every '90s Youth-Group-Goer Definitely Owned

The '90s were an incredible time to grow up, especially if you happened to be a regular church youth group attender. The Religious Freedom Crisis No One is Talking About

As the collective Body of Christ, those of us in the Western church should be concerned about what their Nepali brothers and sisters are facing. The Bible tells us as one Body “if one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). While the situation in Nepal may not affect the daily lives of Christians in the West, as followers of Christ, it should affect our hearts and prayers for the people of Nepal.

Were Some Pastors Included on Ashley Madison List Who Did Not Register for Site?

that up to 400 pastors or church staff members could resign their positions because of accounts registered to the Ashley Madison site, one owner of a faith-based crisis firm says some of those on the list did not sign up for the service and he can prove it.

What is God calling me to? Your past could be key to your future

In fact, my first three years in school were marked by vocational uncertainty. I could tell you what I didn’t believe God’s call on my life entailed, but I couldn’t tell you what it did mean. I was certain I wasn’t called to be a pastor. I thought maybe it was to some sort of educational ministry but at that time my understanding of such a thing was limited to the educational minister that I had observed in our most recent church home. That sense of calling, however, wasn’t out of conviction. It was out of default. I just didn’t know what else was out there. As I learned more, I began to question more. What is it that God’s called me to do?

The Christian movie hit that's shocking Hollywood

Not even the presence of Efron could lift “We Are Your Friends” at the multiplexes. The look at the electronic music scene bombed, eking out a paltry $1.8 million from 2,333 screens, making it the worst wide-release launch of the “High School Musical” star’s career and one of the lowest wide-release debuts for a major studio film in history. Given that dreary pedigree, it’s no surprise that “We Are Your Friends” fell far short of projections, which had it debuting to roughly $8 million. Warner Bros. spent $2 million to acquire it out of the American Film Market, limiting the studio’s financial exposure.

46 Meaningless Life?: Flip Flops in the Snow: Ecclesiastes 3:1-15

How can we enjoy the present is the issue Solomon is driving at. How the answer gets articulated a bit differently depending upon how you were taught. When I am with my Reformed Calvinistic friends, they will talk about the sovereignty of God and how John Calvin taught that God has two hands. One is his active will where he makes things happen. The other is his passive will where he allows things to happen. So, whatever is in your life is from God’s hand in one way or another and you need to accept it even if you don’t understand it. When I am with my Charismatic and Pentecostal friends, they will talk about the flow of God. They explain that we need to discern through the Holy Spirit what God is doing in our life, and flow with it like a kite in a breeze. Either way, the big idea is to know what season you are in, trust that God is in it, and find a way to be happy and enjoy it with people we love. There is very little you will take with you into God’s eternal kingdom, but you will take people and memories. We are being encouraged to take the time to enjoy people, be happy, and make memories.

The Real Danger of Culture’s Post-Apocalyptic Obsession

My point is, it's irresponsible to ignore the ramifications of our current trajectory. Spreading the gospel and its message of hope IS important, but it's also important to understand two things: 1) whether you believe heaven is a different place or will eventually be on a renewed earth, the earth as we know it IS going to be destroyed and 2) there's nothing we can do to stop this except do our part to help as many people be saved as possible. This earth IS a sinking ship, not the foundations of our heavenly castle. Yes, God has promised to save us, but remember first of all that it's GOD who saves US and also that this is the same God who saw it fit to wipe out everything and everyone on earth in the flood in order to renew it. He is just AND merciful, not one or the other...which is not to say the author doesn't know that, but that for Christians who feel a strong desire to save the world, it's important to remember just who and where we are in the scheme of things.

Kanye West Will Run for President of the United States in 2020

Kanye wants to make America great again. Last night during MTV’s VMAs, Kanye West was presented the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, and was given a microphone and a stage, virtually assuring something memorable would happen. During the 12-minute acceptance speech, Kanye addressed the 2009 VMA controversy when he interrupted Taylor Swift (he still feels bad about it), his disdain for award shows in general (successful artists shouldn’t be labeled “losers”), the confidence of milliennials (“I’m confident. I believe in myself. We the millennials, bro. This is a new mentality. We not gonna control our kids with brands!”) and finally, his own political aspirations . Before he left stage, Kanye confirmed a suspicion literally no one had been considering. “Yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020, to run for president.” It’s hard to know if he was serious, but at this point, there is nothing Kanye West could do that would surprise anyone.

Being a Newbie in the City of Phoenix and Ecclesiastes Part 5

I went to a large public school (I hope I spelled that right) from kindergarten until fifth grade. Then, I transferred to a small Catholic school complete with uniforms, nuns and what I thought was purgatory lasting from the fifth through seventh grade. My first week at the Catholic school was rough, since the only kid who really spoke to me was a fellow altar boy I got in a fight with after he hit me in the head with a rock. In his defense, I do have a big head so throwing a rock in any direction came with the inherent risk of finding my Shrek sized melon according to the Vegas over-under.

Islam vs. Islamic extremism: How should we speak about them?

The speech of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden last Saturday at the memorial for the five unarmed servicemen killed in Chattanooga demonstrates the difficulty, uncertainty, and confusion among politicians in dealing with Islam and Islamism. The speech shows the apparent dissonance among the various voices in the same political party.
