Russell Brand on the problem of porn | Think Christian

Any pastors or teachers wishing to effectively connect with young people in this media-addled culture should study Brand. Likewise, anyone who thinks a little skin is no big deal should lean in and pay attention. Sex is a very big deal. In his seemingly stream-of-consciousness spiel, Brand touches on something critical about the nature of the pornography problem. “I feel like if I had total dominion over myself I would never look at pornography again,” he confesses. “I would kick it out of my life.” None of us will achieve complete dominion over our penchant for sin this side of eternity. That’s what community, accountability, regeneration and grace are for. But his call to engage the struggle is inspiring indeed. If a guy like Russell Brand can reign in the beast of lust…

REBOOT | Youth Apologetics

Once a year, REBOOT meets in the centre of London to explore questions such as ‘How can we know God exists?’, ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ and ‘Hasn’t science disproved God?’. REBOOT provides a place for young people from 12-18 years old, with or without any faith or church background, to raise their objections and investigate different perspectives. Through its annual conference, online resources, and speaking invitations, REBOOT aims to equip young people to understand and be able to answer some of these big questions for themselves. Our team from the Zacharias Trust and the OCCA [the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics] want you to have confidence in what you believe, and the chance to be honest about your doubts. Since its launch in 2013, REBOOT has welcomed over 1000 young people, and this year we are excited to see more of you than ever!

New Planned Parenthood Video: StemExpress CEO Jokes about Mailing Dissected Baby Parts

The latest in a series of secretly recorded videos exposing the practices of Planned Parenthood's selling parts of aborted babies released yesterday—and it is just as shocking as the others. In it, activists from the group “The Center for Medical Progress” pose as buyers, filming a conversation with the CEO of StemExpress, a company that actually purchases body parts of aborted babies from Planned Parenthood. In it, CEO Cate Dyer talks about wanting to procure “another 50 livers a week.” At one point, the conversation takes a gruesome turn as they begin to discuss the shipping process. During the back-and-forth, Dyer seemingly acknowledges how difficult and disturbing it is for lab techs at other organizations to work with the baby parts, saying, “Their lab techs freak out and have meltdowns,” adding, “It's almost like they don't want to know where it comes from. I can see that. They're like, ‘We need limbs, but no hands and feet need to be attached … Make it so that we don't know what it is.’" At one point, she says they prefer to receive entire heads, and laughs when the “buyer” jokes that the eyes should be closed when shipped. “Tell the lab it's coming. So they don't open the box and go, ‘Oh God!’ [laughing] So yeah, whereas so many of the academic labs cannot fly like that. They're just not capable.”

Watch Yolanda Adams’ Glorious Late-Night Performance

Sure, it might have been a few weeks ago, but we can’t quite get over Yolanda Adams’ stunning performance on The Tonight Show. The Grammy winning Gospel singer performed “Victory.” It was such an emotive moment, even host Jimmy Fallon declared “I love you. I'm so happy you're here. ... This is going to be a game-changing moment! You're just so awesome.” Agreed, Jimmy. Totally agreed. Check out the moving clip below. Her album Becoming is out now.

Here’s a New Trailer for Banksy’s ‘Dismaland Bemusement Park’

A new trailer for Banksy’s creepy, high-concept art installation has been released, and it’s expectedly dark. The renowned street artist recently opened a sinister take on Disneyland called “Dismaland,” which features numerous “attractions” devoted to the evils of mankind and the darker side of modern pop culture. The faux park, in the beachside community of Somerset, England, is open to visitors through Sept. 27.

Faithful Thinkers: 5 Threats Of Demanding Certainty To Change Your Beliefs

Introduction With the continual exposure to scientific, historical, and philosophical evidence for God's existence, I am continually reminded of just how strong the case for God is, in general, and the truth of Christianity specifically. Often times I wonder how someone can have enough faith to be an atheist. It is often claimed by skeptics of God's existence, and specifically the intelligent design argument, that it is best to not conclude the necessity of a designer until all naturalistic possibilities have been exhausted. This seems to provide a safe, reasonable haven for the skeptic faced with the evidence. But is it really reasonable and thus, safe? What are the implications of this claim? I want to take a few minutes to examine the reasonableness of this escape route. There exists three possible explanations for natural phenomena: chance, necessity, and design. If chance and necessity are eliminated, then there is no other option except design. The skeptic's claim reacts to the design proponents' attempts to rule out chance. As long as humanity does not reach omniscience and research continues, the appeal to what we do not yet know prevents us from being certain that the decision to remove chance from the table of options is correct.

WORLD | Vital connection | Mary Jackson | Sept. 5, 2015

In my early 20s I learned the components of a journalistic story as a reporter in a fast-paced newsroom. On city streets, I looked for a story’s sights, smells, and sounds. I faced my fears of approaching strangers and getting lost in a big city. Subtly, though, under deadline pressure I sometimes viewed people and their stories as quotes, anecdotal leads, or another byline. I read too much news and analysis and too little of the Bible and other heroic tales. I often missed the vital connection between my own story, those I write, and God’s grandiose and unfolding narrative.

“My Pastor is on the Ashley Madison List."

Based on my conversations with leaders from several denominations in the U.S. and Canada, I estimate that at least 400 church leaders (pastors, elders, staff, deacons, etc.) will be resigning Sunday. This is a significant moment of embarrassment for the church—and it should be. To be honest, the number of pastors and church leaders on Ashley Madison is much lower than the number of those looking to have an affair. Yet, there is still much that we must consider in the midst of the embarrassment.

11
The Duggars and the Evil Outside

While I agree with much of what the author states here, I find it troubling that the central point is based on the idea of protection or sheltering being to keep children “ignorant” of sin and that an attitude of protection and sheltering must be motivated from an improper understanding of theology and original sin. This type of argument becomes an excuse for some parents to accuse others of being too protective or improper in their parenting choices. It also can be used to defend a more “hands off” parenting style that would essentially expose children to anything without much regard for baseness, evil and depravity and the ability of children to process and respond to such things. I agree with so much here; I was raised in a very protective home at times very similar to the Duggars (though not quite to the same degree) and I saw firsthand that such sheltering did nothing to prevent certain “taboo” sins in either myself or any of my siblings. But now that I am a parent I am faced with decisions about how much to expose my own 4 daughters to and I find that this issue isn’t nearly as simple as this author is suggesting for one important reason: much of the protection, guidance and “sheltering” we provide for our children isn’t merely to prevent them from “knowing sin” or acting out sinfully…clearly they are born into a sinful nature and all that entails.

Organic Food, Essential Oils, and the Gospel of Grace

While eating organic foods and using non-traditional medicine certainly can be valuable, the danger comes when we develop a sense of superiority to go along with it. In our attempt to create a more organic, natural lifestyle, it can be easy to begin looking down our noses at someone who isn’t on our bandwagon. When promoting our own choices for food and medicine is becoming the latest form of evangelism, we are showing where our hope really lies — and that we are close to forgetting the gospel we say we hold dear.

27 Expert: 400 Church Leaders Will Resign This Sunday Because Names Surfaced in Ashley Madison Hack

I feel really bad for these church leaders. Yes, they do have a moral obligation to live a more morally perfect life from mere lay persons, but as a society, we tend to forget that they are also humans. Humans are never perfect and we tend to put our leaders on a pedestal which is nearly impossible to remain atop! For so many leaders to be involved with this website shows more serious underlying problems. The usual anonymity of the Internet makes it easier to stray outside the moral confines of our communities, but the choice to do so shows other issues not discussed. I hope the churches involved will come together as a support system for these 400 leaders, and not as a place of "stone-throwers" and condemners! I'm sure these people feel bad enough, families are being torn apart, and their guilt is probably enormous. Churches should be a place of refuge in the storms of life! Nobody is perfect!

Top 10 Debate Topics

Kevin Harris: Dr. Craig, I would like you to look over this list. I found this on a popular blog. [1] From time to time, someone will list what they see as the state of the debate among theists and atheists. That is, what people are most frequently talking about online and at public events concerning theism and atheism. So this is a top 10 list that we will look at briefly. Keep in mind, we've done podcasts on all of these topics. I think this list is pretty accurate. I keep up with this as well for this podcast and the Reasonable Faith ministry. In fact, about fifteen years ago, I compiled a list of the current topics online and they were things like Pascal's Wager, Ockham's Razor, God of the Gaps, and one that always seems to make the list – it never goes away – is this blogger's number one: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. He includes it with who has the burden of proof when it comes to claims about God.

When Should We Vent over Social Sins?

Finally, if we really have the mind of Christ in our anger, might not our anger be a witness to the fact that the justice and compassion that Christians feel is not just limited to abortion? We should express anger — appropriate, well grounded, limited, controlled, real anger — not just over the horror of abortion, but for the poor in countries where corruption in leaders lines the pockets of the rich, but leaves the poor with no powers of productivity or angry at police corruption when you see a man shot in the back by police when he is running away or a woman tasered to death while handcuffed and shackled in prison or any number of injustices in the world. If we show a suitable and suitably expressed anger, maybe we will be bearing witness to the fullness of God’s concerns rather than show a narrow partisan kind of anger.

Why Is Having Friends As an Adult So Hard?

The last 11 years have been challenging for me in my friendships. I am a 51 year old bachelor who enjoyed the friendships that I developed during my years at Bible College. I have learned over the years that true genuine friendship requires 100% mutual initiative which is almost impossible with those who have married and begun families. Despite what many churches promise with their “community ministries”, they simply cannot deliver the level of friendship they suggest is required for true community. I have concluded that maintaining the few close friends I have developed over the years through occasional dinners together is the only venue possible in this season of my life.

Southern Baptist mission board to cut as many as 800 positions - Religion News Service

Based on your logic about the Southern Baptists, your own Democrat party is Satan’s spawn — the party of slavery; the party that triggered a fratricidal civil war over slavery; the party of the KKK, the noose and Jim Crow; the party of “progressive” Democrat Woodrow Wilson who brought Jim Crow to Washington; the party that, by word and deed, still treats black men like boys, not equal adults; the party that couldn’t even push through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in an overwhelmingly Democrat Congress without massive GOP support; the party that still opposes equal educational opportunity by opposing the right of parents to choose good schools over terrible ones; and the party that believes black bodies and souls still belong in the grip of the master and mistress who know what’s best for them.

15 Ways to Fight Lust with the Sword of the Spirit

But what about addiction? Is there such a thing as sexual addiction? Or is using the word “addiction” just a cop out, a way to say we aren’t really responsible for our sins? Does the Bible speak to addiction? Is there a fine line between sin and addiction? Much could be said here and many others could say it better, but let me take a shot at it. I do believe that people can arrive at such deep levels of dependence upon certain things that abandoning them is fraught with great difficulty. The “thing” may be a sin itself, such as in the case of pornography. Or the “thing” may be alcohol which is not inherently sinful but dependence on it is. I think it is right for people like Kevin DeYoung to raise the Biblical banner in the fight against sexual sin in articles like this one. I do not think that it would be appropriate for Kevin DeYoung to write this article and shove it into the hands of a member of his church who is failing morally and say, “Read this and stop sinning.” I don’t think he would ever do that. Some people get into sin deeper than others do, even to the point where it is only with great difficulty that they are able to abstain from it.

5 Questions on Creating an Organizational Culture - Eric Geiger

Some have equated organizational culture with personality. In the 1920s, Alfred Adler proposed that people with healthy personalities enjoy congruence between how they perceive themselves, how they want to be perceived, and how others perceive them. We have all seen folks who think they are kind and compassionate, yet everyone else thinks they are jerks. That is clearly an unhealthy person with a warped view. Organizations are the same way. In a healthy culture, there is alignment between what is said to be of supreme value and what actually is.

WORLD | Gabe Lyons on curiosity and orthodoxy | Warren Cole Smith | Aug. 27, 2015

Gabe Lyons founded Q Ideas, which he describes as a learning community that mobilizes Christians to advance the common good in society. The “Q” stands for “questions,” and Lyons hosts conferences around the country where Christians can wrestle with some of the bigger questions that come up while trying to be faithful in a secular culture. The Q conferences are tailored to the culture and concerns of the cities in which they are held: Q Boston emphasized the role of Christians in secular, academic settings, while Q Austin emphasized creativity. While some have called Q’s presentations “TED Talks for Christians,” Lyons says the Q conferences provide ample opportunity for interaction and discussion, not just passive listening. I had this conversation with Lyons in Nashville, Tenn.

Are Atheists Correct When They Claim Mental States Are Merely Brain States? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

We Could Imagine the Existence of Mind without Brain (and Vice Versa) To make the situation even more difficult, most philosophers and scientists acknowledge the metaphysical possibility a mind could exist without any brain at all. One could imagine, for example, extra-terrestrial creatures who might be physiologically different from humans, possessing minds with completely different physiologies (and without any neuron activity at all). Philosophers have also proposed examples of brains without minds. All of us are familiar with the fictional concept of zombies, but from a philosophical perspective, zombies are an important hypothetical proposal. Imagine a human being who is identical to you in every physical and functional way, yet without any mental life whatsoever. From a philosophical perspective, zombies seem metaphysically possible, and if they are, strict materialism is false. We could exist like zombies, yet we don’t. As humans, we possess more than the simply physical, behavioral and functional abilities of zombies; we have a mental life over and above the purely physical life of zombies.

44
Ligonier Ministries

In February, a terrible beheading of twenty-one Egyptian Christians took place. They were executed because they were identified as “the people of the cross.” We are reminded of the possibility of martyrdom and the reality that this side of glory we are “sojourners and exiles” (1 Peter 2:11). Consequently, Christians often find themselves in a most difficult position. We are called to love our neighbors— even our neighbors who might better be described as our enemies (Matt. 5:43–45). And we are not to return evil for evil (Rom. 12:17; 1 Thess. 5:15; 1 Peter 3:9). While most believers do not face the imminent threat of death, testifying to Christ is often far from easy. How, then, are we to live faithfully amid challenging circumstances and among difficult people?

Seven Women

This entertaining and historical story shows that the actual hero of the Thanksgiving was neither white nor Indian, but God. In 1608, English traders came to Massachusetts and captured a 12-year old Indian, Squanto, and sold him into slavery. He was raised by Christians and taught faith in God. Ten years later he was sent home to America. Upon arrival, he learned an epidemic had wiped out his entire village. But God had plans for Squanto. God delivered a Thanksgiving miracle: an English-speaking Indian living in the exact place where the Pilgrims land in a strange new world.

New study: belief in free will linked to ability to behave morally and to help others

So, Monday night I finally finished “reading” God’s Crime Scene, the new book by J. Warner Wallace. I was listening to the audio book, because it is hard to speed along with the top down and read at the same time. For now, here’s my one line review: this is a book for people who like evidence – he has collected a ton of evidence on everything people should be puzzling about, and sometimes on surprising topics. Anyway, I wanted to post something about some studies he mentioned in Chapter 6, on free will. This is one of the places where he found evidence in a surprising area.

The Religious Freedom Crisis No One is Talking About

As the collective Body of Christ, those of us in the Western church should be concerned about what their Nepali brothers and sisters are facing. While the situation in Nepal may not affect the daily lives of Christians in the West, as followers of Christ, it should affect our hearts and prayers for the people of Nepal.
