10 Answers to Common Questions Raised by Skeptics

As Dr. Ravi Zacharias would put it, “Apologetics is the seasoning, but the gospel is the main course.”  I love apologetics, I find it absolutely fascinating.  I also secretly wish I had come into contact with apologetics sooner.  Because then maybe I wouldn’t have had to go down so many dark holes looking for answers.  I dismissed the Bible and Christianity very quickly when I was young.  I didn’t think there was a reason in the world to believe any of it.  I had a practical view similar to that of Richard Dawkins, that belief was considering things to be true that were in direct contradiction with reality.

9 Our Con-Artist Brains?

Let me explain. Much of modern science uses sloppy language that seems to attribute personhood to the central nervous system, conflating matter with mind, electrical signals with thoughts, and tacitly denying free will and even consciousness. You hear it every time a speaker at a TED conference or a host on the Discovery Channel talks of our brains “wanting,” “thinking,” or “deciding” things.

10
Online Shaming Is Destroying Lives

For Ronson, the key is not only recognizing when the impulse to shame people becomes misplaced, but also embracing a community that engages ideas instead of attacking them. “The fact that we surround ourselves around people who feel the same way we do, that makes us more enraged when somebody transgressive comes along,” he says. “Maybe this is something that goes on in Christian communities as well. If you surround yourself with people who feel exactly the same way as you do, that’s kind of undemocratic. When somebody comes around that feels differently to the way you do, you’re more likely to tear them to pieces because you see them as so outlandish compared to the mutual approval machine of your Twitter followers or your church community.”

11 Abandoning Scripture, Abandoning Faith and Morals

And Oliveto wasn’t finished. In perhaps her most telling admission, she warned against having too high a view of Scripture.  “The text, the Bible, is not God,” she said, adding that any true “biblical theology” covers both “the benefits and the flaws” of Scripture. As an example of a “flaw,” Oliveto decried the Bible’s “theology of election and chosenness,” such as the Jews being God’s chosen people, which she blamed for everything from colonialism, to slavery, to the “destruction of native cultures and religions,” to racism, and to the oppression of homosexuals.

14 D.A. Dismisses All Bogus Charges Against David Daleiden for Exposing Planned Parenthood | LifeNews.com

“David Daleiden’s courage and fortitude to expose the nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, should have been met with immediate investigation and prosecution of the baby parts profit-making scheme by the Harris County District Attorney. Yet, it was David instead of Planned Parenthood who took the heat for daring to show the nation what our tax dollars have been funding. Planned Parenthood needs to be held accountable for their horrendous business practices of betraying their clients and selling their babies piece-by-piece for profit. We need to get to the bottom of why rampant corruption occurred during the investigation in Harris County. The DA made a mockery of the office, colluded with an organization that should have had its employees arrested and charged for criminal conduct, and indicted a journalist who exposed Planned Parenthood.

Christians Have to Care About Injustice in the World

This is why Christians like John Newton (who penned "Amazing Grace"), William Wilberforce, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and others considered it their Christian duty to fight to challenge the injustice of slavery. To do justice today is to follow the widow and the abolitionists’ example and work to undo the ways that we, in our fallen humanity, deny access and opportunities (economic, political, social, etc.) to the vulnerable. Whether it is the right to freedom that is taken in human trafficking or the right to due process in the criminal justice system, doing justice means securing these rights and opportunities “with liberty and justice for all.”

Variety’s Family & Faith Summit: Christians are Alive and Kind of Well in Hollywood - Godawa

I have been involved as an independent filmmaker in Hollywood for a long time and I have experienced my share of cynicism with a system and people who are late to the party of recognizing and respecting the interests of this huge demographic of faith and values audience. But I have also been frustrated with the “faith-based” genre for its cheesy sermonizing and lack of excellence in craft, which to my mind disrespects God by disrespecting creation and beauty. I’m a Christian, and I don’t believe the message of many Christian movies. (Is this the fault of Christians with low standards pouring money into crap or the fault of a media culture that fails to provide for their demographic needs, thus resulting in Christians supporting lesser quality because it’s the only thing that respects them?)

Singleness Is Not a Problem to Be Solved

I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. (1 Corinthians 7:32–34).

Was Ayn Rand Right? - Christian Research Institute

In response to the critics of capitalism, many conservative Christians turn to philosopher Ayn Rand for ammunition. Rand was a staunch defender of capitalism, but also an anti-Christian atheist who argued that capitalism was based on greed. Greed, for Rand, is good. But if Rand is right, then Christians can’t be capitalists, because greed is a sin. Fortunately, Rand was wrong. She missed the subtleties of capitalism. First, we should distinguish self-interest from selfishness. Adam Smith, the father of capitalism, famously wrote, “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.” True enough; but that alone isn’t a problem. Every time you wash your hands or look both ways before you cross the street, you’re pursuing your self-interest—but neither activity is selfish. Second, Smith never argued that the more selfish we are, the better a market works. His point, rather, is that in a free market, each of us can pursue ends within our narrow sphere of competence and concern—our “self-interest”—and yet an order will emerge that vastly exceeds anyone’s deliberations.

Christian Worldview Conference at PRTS | HeadHeartHand Blog

Today’s Christians live in a culture shaped by a worldview that values tolerance and denies absolute truth—a stark contrast to the biblical worldview. As pilgrims in this world, we face the challenge of living in a society that embraces wickedness more brazenly than ever before. In light of these threats, it is vital that the church bring “into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5), standing firm on the truths of God’s Word.

27 Reasons To Believe : Dark Energy and Gravity Withstand Tests

Before a high fidelity test of f(R) theory was possible, because of numerous other tests of general relativity and dark energy, we had a very high degree of scientific certainty that a God beyond space and time created the universe and personally designed it for the benefit of human beings. Now, thanks to the recent precision test of f(R) theory we possess even greater scientific certainty. When the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope begins accumulating observations, we will gain the opportunity to develop still greater scientific certainty. As the Bible repeatedly infers, the more we study the realm of nature, the more evidence we will accumulate for the handiwork of God.

You Can Love Ministry and Miss Jesus

“Do not rejoice in this,” — that you made so many friends in Jesus’s name, or sacrificed to help the poor, or were outspoken for the cause of justice, or even led so many to saving faith — “but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). Doug Axe on the burden of proof on the Darwinian evolutionist

But Darwin’s solution comes at a price. The Darwinian pathway must proceed by a series of tiny, functional variations. Each new step needs to be functional. The Darwinian process can’t look ahead and say, “Hey, this variation doesn’t help Species G a bit right now. But when I get it put together with a few hundred or thousand other random variations, then it will give the little fellow a real boost, so I’m going to keep this presently useless variation on hand till then.” The Darwinian mechanism can’t look ahead like an intelligent agent can. It can only judge the present step in the process.

Mercy Would Make America Great

“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’” (Luke 10:30–35)

Four Self-Refuting Statements Heard on College Campuses Across America

“There is no objective truth” / “Objective truth does not exist” Perhaps the most obviously self-refuting, this claim (or something similar to it) is still uttered in many university settings according to the students I train. Like all self-refuting claims, it can be cross-checked by simply turning the statement on itself. By asking, “Is that statement objectively true?” we can quickly see that the person making the claim believes in at least one objective truth: that there is no objective truth. See the problem?

Morality and The New Atheism

Though the chorus of voices decrying belief in God has been humming in the ideological background for centuries, it seems to have reached a crescendo with the emergence of a movement that has been dubbed the new atheism. The trademark of this new and continuing brand of atheism is its vitriolic attack on religion. To its advocates, religious beliefs are not only false; they are also dangerous and must be expunged from all corners of society. The pundits of the new atheism are not content to nail discussion theses on the door of religion; they are also busy delivering eviction notices to the allegedly atavistic elements of an otherwise seamlessly progressive atheistic evolution of Homo Sapiens .

40 The We-Ness Of Us All - R.C. Sproul Jr.

Humans are curious creatures. Just as we struggle to get our minds around both the one-ness and the three-ness of the godhead, so we struggle to understand ourselves. We are alone with our thoughts, alone in our skins. We will face the judgment seat one at a time. But man was not made to be alone. The woman came forth from the man, even as all men come forth from a woman. Husband and wife are made one flesh. Our connectedness, however, doesn’t end there. God’s good promise is that He puts the solitary into families (Psalm 68:6). He makes of us, in our local churches, one body, and in the universal church yet again one body.

For more than two decades now, one of the most important voices on the subject of Christians’ relationship to culture has been Andy Crouch. If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty - Kindle edition by Eric Metaxas. Politics & Social Sciences Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

I began to appreciate Eric Metaxas' work when I read his biography of Bonhoeffer last year. I now appreciate him more for his honest, transparent reminder of 'The Idea of America' that must be 'kept' by its people or it will be lost for all time. His call for the citizens of the US to remember the founding principles upon which this unheard of experiment of a republic was founded is needed in these days of cynicism toward our country. The 'Golden Triangle of Freedom,' liberty, virtue, and faith, which he borrowed from Os Guinness, is a triad of truth which will help us all explain to others the foundation pillars of America's uniqueness and 'exceptional' nature. He reminds us we hold this trust in order to serve and bless others with these freedom and that religious freedom and faith were on the minds of the Founders as they wrote our Constitution. I am not so sure George Whitefield's preaching that ignited the Second Great Awakening was the single moral glue that gave the Founders the confidence people could handle the freedom handed them, but there is no doubt the spiritual movement provided a spiritual basis for a people to govern themselves.

The Briefing 08-02-16 - AlbertMohler.com

But let’s step back for a moment and leave the Roman Catholic Church aside. Though the late Governor Cuomo and the current Senator Kaine identify as Roman Catholics, the same tendency can be found elsewhere as well, where people claim that they have a private conviction but that stands wholly apart from their public policy. That might be something that would have at least some moral credibility if it were an issue in terms of military policy or perhaps economic policy, but not when it comes to the objective value of human life. Either abortion is simply the removal of excess and unwanted tissue, or it is the murder of an unborn human being. It is morally indefensible to hold to a position that says in private one believes it to be murder but in public, in terms of one’s public responsibilities as an elected official, one is ardently for the right to commit that murder.

Christians Need to Recover the Lost Art of Patience

So how do we learn patience? Patience is about love and value. The more we love others, the easier it is to be patient with them. The more we value and respect someone, the longer it takes them to get on our nerves. What often makes us impatient is that the person we love the most, in many scenarios, is ourselves. The time we value most is our own. The dreams we care most about fulfilling are ours. Impatience comes because, especially as Christians, we care and think way too much about ourselves. A little humility, a little consideration and value for others would go a long way in building the foundation of our patience.

Did You Know? Jesus Features in Most Religions

You’ve probably heard the phrase: “All religions are basically the same”. This can’t logically be true. All religions say completely different things about the nature of truth, if there is a God, how to access God, what – if anything- is wrong with humanity, how to rectify what is wrong with humanity, what happens after you die, etc, etc.

A Religion of Peace? with Jay Smith

Islamic nations are firebombing, arresting, torturing, and murdering Christians by the hundreds of thousands, but almost no one is willing to acknowledge the causal link between Islam and terrorism. But Islamic scholar and Christian polemicist Jay Smith knows better than to buy into that trend. Smith debates Muslims regularly, has brought many to faith in Christ, and, in this insightful interview, exposes the unvarnished truth about real Islam, the Koran, and Muhammad himself.
