Watch Stormtroopers Storm the Golden Gate Bridge

In a move unusual even for San Francisco, more than 50 stormtroopers and other Star Wars characters—like bounty hunters and, yes, Darth Vader—marched across the Golden Gate Bridge. Marchers were part of a Star Wars costuming organization called Golden Gate Garrison, raising support for fellow fan Kevin Doyle, whose wife recently died from pancreatic cancer. At least this time, Stormtroopers storming was a good thing.

The Way Is Hard, But He is Strong

Oh, the paradox! The Word of God destroyed the works of the devil by being broken. Yes, all hell broke loose upon the Word of God from Gethsemane to Calvary and the Word was broken. But it was not broken in the way that hell tried to break it. Hell tried to compromise the Word, but the Word held fast by being broken. For in being broken, the Word of God kept unbroken the word of God, the great covenant, and cosmic justice was upheld as Christ became both “just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).

John Oliver Takes on Televangelism and the Prosperity Gospel

The most cringe-worthy part of in the entire 20-minute segment however, was when he showed what happened when he engaged in a months-long mail correspondence with televangelist faith-healer Robert Tilton. Each letter was responded to by Tilton’s ministry, along with increasingly weird requests for more and more donations. Seriously, Oliver was sent colored anointing oils, and even an outlined drawing of Tilton’s foot meant to be a part of some sort of supernatural exercise.

A Guide to Texting the Opposite Sex

I met a guy from Czech Republic on a trip that I made four years ago, since then we texted and had many video calls talking about many subjects and was last year I flight again to the Czech Republic to visit my best friend as I do every year, so there I went out with this guy and both felt something more than friendship, but for four years He told me to come to visit me but he never did it, now I'm getting tired and I thinking of giving up on this relationship that is going nowhere and plus we live in different countries that are not near :(

Will the Internet Kill Christianity?

The true fear, that I have seen in some of my peers and in some of the adults I have talked with, is that if Christianity, as a movement of religion, takes ground in secular culture then we risk being mis-portrayed and "contaminated". True Christianity is not a religion, it is a FAITH, the faith that raised people from the dead and still heals people. That faith never dies and is stronger than the power of death and the grave. Faith can't be "contaminated" and no one can make a good argument to say it is fake. Christian religion has denominations, which are all to some degree wrong because they were made by men. God didn't say, "Hey my children! Lets have like, IDK, 10 or more different versions of my love for you. Just stick to the basics of Jesus' sacrifice and you'll be fine." He said The Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule, everything Jesus said, and everything I spoke to you is true. If followers of Christ will stick to the basics of Christianity and let the Holy Spirit convict them of all other things (which will be smaller personal choices that can be taken on by others), we can actually be appealing to modern culture.

What to Do About Planned Parenthood

I think the same thing is happening with these videos. It’s really easy for people to think about abortion in terms of euphemisms that keep it distant. Even the term “pro-choice”—we don’t ever talk about what we're choosing. And the language people use of “fetus” or “embryo” or “product of conception”—we don’t like to think about what actually happens in an abortion. That’s really what’s happening in these videos: It is the raw shock of being confronted with the fact that abortion is violent. It’s an act of violence against someone.

The Bible Project: Free, Animated Biblical Theology

The Bible Project is producing some great, free resources for the church. Because the medium they use is animation, you might assume (without watching it) that this is only for kids. But it’s really something that could profit all of us.

Star Wars Attractions Are Coming to the Disney Parks

Star Wars fans may soon have a new reason to visit Disneyland. At the D23 Expo this weekend, Disney CEO Bob Iger said they were building Star Wars-styled lands at their theme parks in Florida and California. Calling the project the “largest single-themed land expansion ever,” Iger explained that the theme of the park areas will be based on the idea that each is its own planet “occupied by many inhabitants; humanoids, aliens and droids ... the attractions, the entertainment, everything we create will be part of our storytelling. Nothing will be out of character or stray from the mythology.”

Two Books About—and For—Widows

“All widows need the spiritual comfort of the church’s ministry,” Walker acknowledges, “but not all widows have identical circumstances” (77–78). Yet most of Croft’s practical ideas for serving widows presume she is elderly. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one-third of all women who become widowed are younger than age 60, and half of those widowed become so by age 65. Most see elderly widows as the most vulnerable. Yet younger widows, faced with becoming the primary breadwinner and caregiver for a young family, endure entirely different but equally daunting circumstances. While the authors do reference younger widows, they offer little in terms of practical suggestions on how to encourage them.

The dangerous calling of Christian missions

This is, as the late Carl F.H. Henry advised, a time for evangelical demonstration. Our words of support for the missionary cause are meaningless if we do not produce a new generation of bold, courageous, and committed Christian missionaries. Let us make our convictions clear and commitments firm, even in the face of hostility and danger. Evangelical Christians must take our stand for the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone has made atonement for our sins. In a day of hostility and danger, we must point to the only gospel that offers salvation. We must learn again to define the true gospel in terms of justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. This is the sum and substance of the genuine gospel — and the true gospel is always a missionary gospel — and a gospel that is active even in the world’s most dangerous contexts.

Above All Earthly Metaphors

Lauren Winner—assistant professor of Christian spirituality at Duke Divinity School and author of Girl Meets God , Mudhouse Sabbath , and Real Sex —takes up this question in her new book. In Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God (HarperOne), Winner uses the Scriptures to show that God is simply too vast and wonderful to contain in a single image. “The Bible’s inclusion of so many figures for God,” she writes, “is both an invitation and a caution. The invitation is to discovery: discovery of who God is, and what our friendship with God might become. The caution is against assuming that any one image of God, whatever truth it holds, adequately describes God.”

Tracy Morgan Is Going to Host a New Episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’

Tracy Morgan is returning to Saturday Night Live in what will be his first performance since getting into a horrific car accident last summer. On Oct. 17, the former SNL cast member will return to the NBC studios' stage, joining a list of season 41 hosts that also includes Amy Schumer and Miley Cyrus. Morgan was badly injured and spent two weeks in a coma after the limo van he was a passenger in was struck by a Walmart semi-truck on the New Jersey Turnpike last June. One of the passengers was killed and several others injured.

Airplane with 54 People Onboard Crashes in Indonesia

A commercial airplane carrying 54 people crashed in a remote area of Indonesia this weekend. Rescuers have been attempt to get to the site, but there is no word yet if anyone survived. According to reports, the plane did not send out a distress call, and it had been flying in extremely heavy rain and fog in the mountainous region. The airline, Trigana Air Service, does not have a good safety record, and, according to Reuters, has been blacklisted by the EU due to concerns about how it operates.

"Inside Out" - Feelings, Family, and Fun: A Christian Perspective

I recently got to see “Inside Out” in theaters and it was a huge treat. The plot was fairly predictable, but it was delightfully done and thought-provoking. Here, we will explore the film from a Christian worldview perspective. There will be  SPOILERS  in the following review.

The Gospel, Marriage, and Sexual Schismatics

but, two questions: first, why not just drop the terms “left” and “right”? you use the former, and it seems to function even as a conceptual category for you. i think that what will distinguish christian boldness from “conservative” boldness in future days will be that the former is always joined to an expansive *theological* vision. if anyone can help us to stand more firmly on theological ground amidst culture wars, pannenberg can (he’s the deepest theological mind of the last 100 yrs in my opinion! and he’s from another culture) – which leads to my second point, namely that detailing #3 could help us converse in a more deeply theological way about this topic. this is far more important than #1 or #2, and frankly should eclipse those two points entirely.

Anne Graham Lotz's Husband in Intensive Care Unit

[A Graham family friend, Jim Young] said Lotz has suffered from diabetic seizures for the past several years, and is on dialysis, which has required hospital visits in the past. It’s unclear if his diabetes had anything to do with this near-drowning, Young said. Young said Lotz leads a Bible study every Friday with 80-100 men in Raleigh and he’s done that for the past 30 years.

Faithful Thinkers: 6 Quotes from Donald E. Johnson on Information in Living Systems

"Laws of chemistry and physics which follow exact statistical, thermodynamic, and spatial laws, are totally inadequate for generating complex functional information or those systems that process the information using prescriptive algorithmic information. Unfortunately, most people investigating origins are unfamiliar with the immensity of the problems, and believe that time, chance and natural selection can accomplish almost anything." "One cannot use the information of life to 'prove' that information can arise purely from physicality, as that would simply be a tautology based on the assumption of life from physicality. In examining any complex functional information where the source of the information is known, it invariably (no known exceptions) resulted from a source other than chance and/or necessity." "Those who insist on purely physical causes of life are in an untenable position when it comes to known science. Not only can they not prove that it's possible (non-zero probability) for life to come about by the physical interactions of nature, but the information content of life precludes that possibility.

How to Understand Your Personality Type | Jim Daly

Beavers are organized and love structure. They think there is a right way to do everything, so they strive to do everything in exactly that way. That usually means they’ll take the time necessary to do it right. Beavers are also very creative. Like I said, when all of these different personalities live under one roof, the stage is set for misunderstanding and conflict.

The proper dress for a sinner...

“You have never failed in business; you have brought up your children well; you never swear; you were never a drunkard; midnight orgies never saw you mixed up in them; this is well, but I pray thee, put not on this as thy proper dress: the proper dress for a sinner to go to Christ in, is sackcloth and the rope. ‘Well,’ says one, ‘I never will acknowledge that I deserve to be damned!’ Then you never will be saved. ‘Well,’ says another, ‘I never will take the language of a great sinner upon my lips.’ Then you shall never be saved; for unless you are willing to confess that God may justly damn you, God will never save you; but if you feel in your heart to-night, that if he sends your soul to hell, his righteous law approves it well; if you wonder how it is that you are not in the pit, and marvel why such mercy should have been shown to you, come, brother, come; come as you are, for you wear the true court-dress of a sinner.” Charles Spurgeon

Accommodation or Compromise: The Ongoing Battle for the Bible

Accommodation? It might well be that Jesus (and indeed the Holy Spirit), inspiring the authors of the books of the Bible, accommodated his teachings to popular belief . . . Parents often accommodate beliefs of their children (whether to Santa Claus, or where babies come from, or Uncle Dave being as strong as a Superhero), without thereby endorsing them as true. So too, the claim goes, Jesus sometimes accommodated the false beliefs of his audience in his teachings. And the same would go for the inspired writers of Scripture.
