How to Create a Reading Culture in Your Church - Tim Challies

On a recent trip to Scotland, I held an Ask Me Anything event at FM Bookstore and Cafe in Edinburgh. One of the questions I was asked was “how to you create a reading culture in your church?” Here is my answer. Transcript How do you create a culture of reading in your church? Yes, so, how do you create a culture of reading and learning in a local church? Speaking from the experience in our church, that’s probably all …

Jesus on the Problem of Evil

Right, we don’t know everything. That doesn’t change anything I’ve said, it seems. If someone punches you in the face, the immediate result is pain. Whether there is a long term point/value/benefit remain to be see. None of that changes the conclusion that, as far as we can tell at the time, the punch was not justified, but unkind. Likewise, the Holocaust did great harm. Hitler was greatly unloving. As far as we can tell, there are many negatives to it, but not many positives that show that it is for the greater good/justified. Our current assessment should be that it was unjustified. If we learn more later, we might change that assessment. That’s how we do all things: judge as we go, modify our judgments as we learn new things. Some evils are due to free will, and some are not. Yes, humans do mean things sometimes. And sometimes, they are so mean, that kind, loving humans try to stop them, even if that means ruining that person’s free will. Free will, while pretty important, is not always so important that it is for the greater good to never interfere with it. So yes, a loving god would let us have some free will, but it doesn’t follow that a loving god would never interfere with it.

Resurrection—No Doubt About It

If someone rejects the Bible’s authority, that person must still contend with the fact that multiple, reliable historical documents make these amazing claims. And based on evidence within the Bible itself, there is no reason to reject those claims. Even most secular historians have come to accept the evidence used in defense of Christ’s Resurrection, though they strive to reach a different conclusion about its significance.

4 Things To Know About Catholic Sex Abuse Scandals, PA Grand Jury Report

"The deeper problem is the presence of homosexual networks in the Church — likely in dioceses all over the world and certainly in the Curia. Yes, there are lots of other immoral behaviors — adultery, greed, luxuriousness, clericalism and substance abuse, for instance, that need to be addressed but first things first. Eradicating the homosexual networks from the Church would do a lot to purging the Church of immoral priests — and doing so should help us get at the other problems," she said.

14 Your Wedding Is Still Something Worth Wanting

Marriage wasn’t an optional, incidental arrangement in God’s agenda. It was right there at the center, tying together the two most significant characters in this new and epic story. For sure, sin has broken and marred what was good and pure about that first marriage. But Paul says — quoting Genesis 2 — that from the very beginning, the mystery of marriage is that it’s meant to represent Jesus’s relationship with the church (Ephesians 5:32). This means sin wasn’t a surprise in God’s design for marriage. Rather, it tragically, but beautifully, served to fulfill God’s good design. Marriages today, though flawed, are still carrying out, though imperfectly, the glorious purposes God gave them in the Garden.

Make ‘God Talk’ an Everyday Part of Family Life

The kitchen table was strewn with torn pages of notebook paper full of fractions and scribbles. Broken pencils, chewed-up erasers, and empty soda bottles were surrounded by crumpled snack wrappers; a low moan underscored it all. Had I stumbled upon a crime scene? No. I had stumbled upon my son amid the detritus of high-school geometry. Elbows on the table, blonde hair flopped between his hands, he said, “Argh! I don’t understand this! It’s impossible!” He explained what the problem was, showed me how he’d tried to solve it, told me why his answers didn’t work, and beseeched me with his bright blue eyes. The boy needed help. Unfortunately for him, he had come to the wrong place. You see, I can cook a delicious meal, cultivate a thriving garden, even sew on buttons and hem up pants. But don’t ask me to help you with your geometry homework. I don’t get it. I didn’t understand it in high school, and I certainly don’t understand it now. And this is the first lesson in how to answer theological questions, whether it’s your kids asking or your next-door neighbor: You can’t answer what you don’t know.

‘Hamilton’: Healing Balm for Restless Immigrants

In Hamilton , despite Alexander’s sincere attempts to stay away from public life, Alexander’s life is cut short when he dies in a duel with the infamous Aaron Burr, the grandson of Jonathan Edwards. But Burr, the grandson of a preacher who spoke so powerfully of the beauty of forgiveness in Christ, did not reciprocate. Yet as if to quell any doubt concerning the sincerity of his faith, Alexander declares on his deathbed: “I have tender reliance on the mercy of the Almighty, through the merits of the Lord Jesus.”

Respectfully Engaging with Hindus | Mikel Del Rosario | Your Apologetics Guy℠

Let’s talk about respectfully engaging with Hindus. Today, more than a billion people around the world say they’re Hindus. That’s about 15 percent of the world. If you haven’t yet met someone at least interested in some aspect of Hindu culture, you may soon. The more we engage with our neighbors, the more we find that religion is a core part of many people’s lives. Loving our neighbors means getting to know them. And getting to know them means getting to know their religion. As ambassadors of Jesus, we need discover what makes their religion attractive to them. Why did they convert?  It they were born into it, what keeps them loyal?

Carbon, the Miracle Element

A lot of people today worry about the carbon footprints of nations, industries, technologies, and even individual human beings and animals. They worry that our activities are pumping too much carbon in the form of carbon dioxide and methane— both powerful greenhouse gases—into the atmosphere and too much carbon in the form of tiny particles of soot onto glaciers and snowfields. They worry that these activities are warming our planet and raising our sea levels.

An unfortunate misconception that seems rampant in the church

My first real apologetics conversation came during my first semester at Seminary. I was only a few lessons into the semester, and I was given an assignment to talk to someone who was not a Christian. I was stunned at how unprepared I was to answer even some of the most basic questions about my faith. I’ve been a Christian for more than 30 years, and I was brought to tears (and to my knees) when I realized all of the missed opportunities I’ve had in my life because I was not properly equipped with apologetics. I often hear that apologetics is too intellectual and that faith is more of an emotional thing. This is an unfortunate misconception that seems rampant in the church. Our faith should not be grounded in our emotions. Mark 12:30 says to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” We must strike a balance between our emotions and our reason in order to love the Lord fully. If we rely solely on our emotions, we are laying our Christianity on a weak foundation.

Byzantine manuscript, missing for 27 years, to be returned to Greece

“It is with great pleasure that we are announcing the return to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens of an important manuscript, a unique Gospel book of the 12th century that went missing three decades ago from one of our libraries and whose whereabouts had remained unknown,” said Professor Antonopoulou with the university’s department of philology. “The manuscript is a witness to the original Greek text of the gospels and to its use in medieval times in the Byzantine Empire. Its return is of paramount importance for the unity of the manuscript collection of the university, to which it had been bequeathed by a distinguished former professor of our university and once prime minister of Greece, Spyridon Lambros, as well as for scholarly purposes and reasons of cultural heritage.

How to ERASE Logical Fallacies

I don’t want to be accused of Missing the Point, but there are a few fallacies that you tell us to avoid and fail to define. I found ten of them: 1) Missing the Point, 2) Appeal to Force, 3) Appeal to Ignorance, 4) Appeal to Authority, 5) Hasty Generalization, 6) False Cause, 7) Oversimplified Cause, 8) Slippery Slope, 9) False Analogy, and 10) Circular Reasoning. I listed the above fallacies in the order of which I noticed they were undefined. Now the Circular Reasoning and Begging the Question fallacies are two fallacies that are often confused with each other, but are not the same thing. I do realize some of the above listed undefined fallacies are self-explanatory, but I do think an explanation would still help your argument. This was a great article and I did understand your point, but I think defining the ten above fallacies will help your point. As a bonus fallacy, for fun: please define the No True Scotsman fallacy. Great article. God bless you. Have a good day.

Isaiah's Signature Uncovered in Jerusalem: Evidence of the Prophet Isaiah?

Mazar’s team found the seal impression in an undisturbed area of Iron Age debris (dated to the eighth–seventh centuries B.C.E.) right outside the southeastern wall of the royal bakery, a structure that had been integrated into the city’s fortifications and had operated until the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. All of the excavated dirt from this area of the Ophel was wet-sifted, meaning that it was placed on a sifting screen and washed with water. This process revealed multiple finds—including Isaiah’s seal impression and an impression of the Judahite king Hezekiah —which had been missed during traditional excavation methods. Since each of these impressions has a diameter of about half an inch and is the same color as the dirt, it is easy to understand why they were not spotted in the field.

What consolation can you find when you become known worldwide as atheism’s celebrity idiot? You look to the Scriptures and take consolation in how Joseph was humiliated before the time came when God opened a big door of opportunity for him, and how Moses was abased before God opened a big sea for him. And that’s what happened when Ray Comfort was christened “Banana Man” by Professor Richard Dawkins. Millions came under the sound of the everlasting gospel, all because of that humiliating name: Banana Man.

Male grad student sues female feminist professor, university for sexual harassment - The College Fix

Christianity Answers Life's Biggest Questions better than Atheism - Jesus is Not Fake News

In addition, the apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8 that believers are adopted into God’s family where they can experience a true relationship with him. Once adopted, Christians can cultivate this relationship as they follow Jesus’ teachings, commune with God through Scripture reading and prayer, regularly gather with other Christ-followers for worship, and diligently spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. In short, there is no higher calling for a person than to pursue a dynamic relationship with God.
