3 Apologetics Strategies From the Book of Acts

This simple question is credited with carrying Christianity into Ethiopia. (1) Acts chapter 8 tells of Philip being led to the desert by an angel to meet an officer from the court of the Queen of Ethiopia. Philip finds him reading an Isaiah scroll containing prophecies about the Messiah. At this point, Philip could have walked up and boldly declared, "I have been sent to you today to proclaim the good news of Jesus the Messiah!" But he didn't. He met this man right where he was at and asked a good question, which then led to an explanation of the gospel. This is apologetics at its best.

What are your thoughts on the doctrine of Christ's blood "running through our veins?" Can you shed any light on Jesus' attitude towards the woman in Matthew 15:21-28? Facing Our Legacy of Lynching

Once in town, I couldn’t find the Fourth Street Bridge. My husband dropped me at the local history museum and took our kids to play in a park. I awkwardly brought up the lynching with the man at the museum, who knew exactly what I was referring to. He gave me as much information as he had, making copies from local history books. I asked him if the museum would ever consider making an exhibit about Tucker, but the man shook his head sadly. “We just don’t have enough information” he said. “There isn’t even a single photo of Alonzo in existence.”

3 Reasons Why History Matters To Faith

Did the events recorded in the pages of Scripture really happen in history? And does it matter? The short answer is…Yes and Yes! BTW the longer answer is still yes and yes…but this is a blog, not a book. Here are 3 reasons why history matters to the Christian faith.

State Department’s Unusually Short Religious Freedom Update: ISIS Is Bad

“In some circumstances, we should and do condition our policy engagements on people adopting certain actions as to how they treat people,” he said. But “I hear from government leaders all over the world: ‘You just can’t demand that of us, we can’t move that quickly, we can’t adapt that quickly, okay?’ So it’s how do we advance our national security and economic interests on this hand, our values are constant over here.”

Trump Spoke Truth About ‘Both Sides’ In Charlottesville, And Media Lost It

This is a dismal situation for Americans to be in. We have newsmakers whose only professional function these days seems to be whipping tens of millions of people into angry, irrational frenzies. They do not seem to care about the truth. They do not seem to care about honesty, integrity, or accuracy. We are lurching from one shrieking, insane media episode to the next. And it is wearing on all of us, and weakening the bonds of fellowship and friendship between common Americans.

Philippians 1:7–8: A Strange Evidence of Saving Faith

When God saves someone, he not only gives them a new love for himself, but a new love for his people. In this lab, Pastor John tells us how love for Christians is an evidence of true faith.

4 Ways to Confront Your Own Biases

“You know that a price was paid to redeem you from following the empty ways handed on to you by your ancestors; it was not paid with things that perish (like silver and gold), but with the precious blood of the Anointed” 1 Peter 1:18-19.

Anti-Refugee Ideas Led Right to Charlottesville

But Americans actually decided the central question years before. In 1968, the federal government mandated that all vehicles sold in the United States come fitted with seatbelts, and around the same time most states passed laws requiring adults to wear them. Of course, seatbelt laws attract little attention. Because who, after all, could be against seat belts? Yet think about it: Decades before universal healthcare became a viable idea in the U.S., the government effectively took hold of the well-being choices of adult Americans. The argument for government-required seatbelts may be understandable, even defensible. It’s a substantially more nuanced situation. But in a real sense, the moment the government began to mandate specific health and safety decisions of competent adults, the healthcare debate ended.

One of the groups he singled out were the residents of Bethsaida, the home town of Peter, Andrew and Philip. “Woe to you, Bethsaida!” he declared. “For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.”

August 16 Bible Reading and Devotional: The One Who Humbles Himself

Is the Bible literally true?

Is the Bible literally true? by Rob Phillips Christians are sometimes asked if we believe the Bible is literally true. After all, whether eating Christ’s flesh and drinking His blood is a plunge into cannibalism, or a figurative expression of full devotion, depends on how we understand the language of Scripture. In one sense, we might say the Bible is divinely inspired literature through which God speaks to human beings in our own language. This naturally includes a range of literary devices, from narrative to hyperbole. So, what does it mean to take the Bible “literally”? It means applying a natural reading as the author or speaker intended, with a goal of grasping the writer’s message. This requires context and may include approximations, analogies, metaphors, quotations, parables, apocalyptic language, etc. In contrast, taking the Bible “literalistically” means adhering to a rigid understanding of the primary meaning of words, without allowing for figurative language or a possible range of meanings. An example may help clarify this. In John 10:9, Jesus states, “I am the door.

Reasons To Believe : Is the Whale Pelvis a Vestige of Evolution?

Evolutionary biologists will argue that this insight doesn’t diminish the case for biological evolution one bit. They will maintain that the whale pelvis is a homologous structure, even if it isn’t vestigial, and therefore supports common ancestry. For creationists and ID adherents, on the other hand, this insight is significant. The whale pelvis’ functional role makes it reasonable to argue that this structure is the expression of an archetypical design—the work of a Creator. If the whale pelvis were truly vestigial, this argument would be harder to make.

Four Ways the Earth Is Fine-Tuned for Life | Cold Case Christianity

Like the death scene I investigated, the layers of foundational, regional, and locational evidence in the universe show signs of “tampering.” The forces governing atomic structure, the matter of the universe and the creation of chemicals are conveniently aligned to allow life’s existence. Even tiny changes in these forces have disastrous consequences for life. Similarly narrow ranges exist related to our galaxy and planet. While the appearance of fine-tuning in any one of these cosmic parameters might not be all that compelling, the cumulative nature of these conditions obligates us to seek an explanation.

What Can Christians Learn from the Apostolic Fathers? Interview with Author Ken Berding

KEN BERDING: I’m so glad you’re reading the book! The Apostolic Fathers are a name given in the modern era to the earliest Christian writers who wrote just after the age of the apostles. Their writings span A.D. 95-160. They include 1 Clement, the letters of Ignatius, Polycarp’s Letter to the Philippians, The Didache, fragments from Papias, the Shepherd of Hermas, the Letter of Barnabas (not Paul’s co-worker), 2 Clement, Diognetus, and The Martyrdom of Polycarp. Why are they important? The reason they’re important is because of how early they were written. Some of these authors actually knew apostles or companions of apostles. If we could talk to them, they could answer many questions (and actually did answer a few of them in their writings!) that get asked about the apostolic age. They also help us observe early developments in Christian doctrine and church polity. Besides, they’re really interesting…for the most part…

5 ‘Fake News’ Stories People Believe About Early Christianity

“Fake news” isn’t a new phenomenon, though. There’s quite a bit of fake news out there regarding the person of Jesus, the origins of the church, and the development of the Bible. Even though such “news” has no factual basis, it’s believed by an uncomfortably large number of people.

Freedom From the Web of Pornography - Westminster Theological Seminary

Second, because the Bible is utterly realistic about both the problem and its resolution. Page after page in the Bible we find acknowledgment of human weakness, including in the area of sexuality. The greatest king in the Old Testament committed adultery and murder. The opening of the book of Proverbs likens folly to a seductive woman. Israel’s unfaithfulness is compared to a harlot. And yet, at the same time, forgiveness and restoration are real and close at hand. David was forgiven and restored. The young sage in Israel is instructed on how to avoid the seductress. Israel was restored. We sometimes imagine God must be tired of us. We’ve sinned one time too many. That is because we ignore the depths of his love and the power of the gospel to save and to forgive, over and over again.

World-Changers Read All the Time. Here's How You Can Too

I do believe that the most innovative world-changers today are readers, as they have been for many previous generations. So, if we are reading more than ever, what sets apart these world-changers from everyone else? The answer to this question lies not in quantity of reading, but in the quality of what is read and how it is read. Here are a few ideas on how to read more transformatively, not only for your sake, but for the sake of your church, your neighborhood and the world.
