How Archaeology Confirms the Bible: Jericho | Come Reason's Apologetics Notes

Everyone know the story of Joshua's army marching around the walls of Jericho until they collapsed, allowing the Israelites to take the city. It's a famous story, and if true would provide evidence for both God's existence and the validity of the Bible. Archaeologists have known for years where Jericho is and they've conducted many excavations at the site of the city, searching to reconstruct its history along the way. Was there a battle in Jericho like the one describe in the Bible? In this video, Lenny explores recent finds in archaeology and how they support the biblical accounts. Apes close to speaking? No. | Uncommon Descent

“Decades ago, in the 1930s and ’40s, a couple of husband-and-wife teams of psychologists tried to raise chimpanzees as much as possible like human children and teach them to speak. Their efforts were deemed a total failure,” Perlman says. “Since then, there is an idea that apes are not able to voluntarily control their vocalizations or even their breathing.”

Racial Diversity and Our ‘Third Race’

When you become a Christian, you don’t cease to be your first race, nor do you assimilate into the second race of the people who brought you to Christ (if they were different from you). Instead, you become a part of a new race, a third race, though still maintaining your first race. In that third race you find a unity with other believers that supersedes any differences that come from distinctions in your first races. In Christ, Paul says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female” (Gal. 3:28). He didn’t mean we cease to be Jews or Greeks when we get saved any more than we cease to be male or female. Our race in Christ simply becomes weightier than any other earthly distinctions—of gender, of culture, or of socioeconomic status.

In Peace or Crisis, Instruct Your Children in the Lord

I want to look at two key verses out of many that admonish us to pass on our knowledge and love of the Lord to our children through regular instruction. This can happen in many different ways, but I suggest that helping our kids memorize Christian teaching in particular is one of the most effective. There is no doubt about how singularly clear the importance of that task has become in my own life as my family recently entered this time of deep and terrible crisis.

Renewing Your Mind | Questions and Answers #2 | August 17, 2015

These scientific justifications of violence rest on reducing some or all humans to the status of animals. The psalmist anticipated this tragic situation in a remarkable way. Psalm 49 is addressed to all the people in the world in order to teach them wisdom and understanding. Here the teaching of wisdom begins by meditating on the universal reality of death. If death is the same for the fool and the wise, for the poor and the rich, for the weak and the powerful, what meaning does life really have? "Man in his pomp will not remain; he is like the beasts that perish" (v. 12). How can man be more than a beast? The answer is by knowing the truth: "Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish" (v. 20). Ultimately, only real wisdom or understanding separates man from the beasts. The truth is that only God can save His people from death and give them everlasting life: "But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol" (v. 15).

7 Your Berean Battle Plan: Remain

send to a friend #1  Posted by Thomas  |  Monday, August 17, 2015at 3:04 AM The Scripture says, “through knowledge the righteous will be delivered” (Proverbs 11:9) Just as light always expels the darkness, truth always expels error. Unfortunately, not everyone wants their error to be exposed. The Scriptures make it very clear that many people actually prefer to believe lies. Jesus described this in His conversation with Nicodemus saying, “this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” (John 3:19-20) The truth is that men take such delight in their sin that they refuse to accept that it is sin; for to admit that their pleasures are sinful would be to admit that they must cease the practice of it.

How Trigger Warnings Are Hurting Mental Health on Campus

Finally, universities should rethink the skills and values they most want to impart to their incoming students. At present, many freshman-orientation programs try to raise student sensitivity to a nearly impossible level. Teaching students to avoid giving unintentional offense is a worthy goal, especially when the students come from many different cultural backgrounds. But students should also be taught how to live in a world full of potential offenses. Why not teach incoming students how to practice cognitive behavioral therapy? Given high and rising rates of mental illness, this simple step would be among the most humane and supportive things a university could do. The cost and time commitment could be kept low: a few group training sessions could be supplemented by Web sites or apps. But the outcome could pay dividends in many ways. For example, a shared vocabulary about reasoning, common distortions, and the appropriate use of evidence to draw conclusions would facilitate critical thinking and real debate. It would also tone down the perpetual state of outrage that seems to engulf some colleges these days, allowing students’ minds to open more widely to new ideas and new people.

Why Teachers, Parents, and Society at Large Have Destroyed Kids’ Love of Learning

The truth—for this parent and so many others—is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar of achievement, and it’s our fault. Marianna’s parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all implicated in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Marianna that her potential is tied to her intellect, and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing As, championship trophies, and college acceptances, and we inadvertently taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk marring that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.

3 Ways Christians Turn People Off from Church

There is one way and one way only to lead people to the Cross, lifting up the name of Jesus. Most churches preach "around" the Cross and never reveal and unveil the Love of God, through our Lord Jesus. Many of these points seem valid except they all point to man's performance and self. What can man do, what can we do, what can the "church" do to lead people to Christ. When we take our eyes off of self and focus on our Lord Jesus and His Finished Work at the Cross, we are headed in the right direction. There is absolutely NOTHING we can do in our selves that will improve on what Jesus did at Calvary. Grace, unmerited favor, is a gift from God in the Person of His Dear Son, our Lord Jesus. Grace is an unnatural phenomenon, man is accustomed to a performance based scenario--you do good, you get good; you do bad and you get bad! Grace is just the reverse--you get good regardless of what you do or have done. The reason--Salvation is not based upon what we have done, it is based upon what Jesus did at the Cross. Man's pride and self righteousness is deeply embedded in the natural state of man.

Why Gay Marriage Proponents Can’t Appeal to the Abolitionist Movement

Scripture doesn’t speak out explicitly against each and every sinful practice going on in the world. Some practices such as slavery are tolerated within the biblical narrative even while they far short of the God’s ideal. We could put polygamy in this category, too. That we come across many examples of polygamy in the Bible, even among individuals praiseworthy in other respects, does not endorse the practice. Similarly, the biblical passages addressing slavery shouldn’t be read as condoning slavery as an institution. In fact, as we observed, the instructions regarding slavery bring radical transformation to the master-slave relationship.

Sexual orientation in the UK: Half of young people say they are not 100% heterosexual

One of the most striking findings of the new study is that with each generation, people see their sexuality as less fixed and more fluid. The results for 18-24 year-olds are particularly telling, with 43% placing themselves in the non-binary area between 1 and 5 and 52% place themselves at one end or the other. Of these, only 46% say they are completely heterosexual and 6% as completely homosexual.

How Not to Be a Proud Parent

Each of those thoughts is worth mulling over at length. My happy task (and challenge!) was to dive into the scriptural teaching behind them and think about the struggles parents face, helping to write a study even as I learned the lessons for myself. I found that, in a sense, I’ve been right to resist books about better parenting. I don’t need so much to become a better parent; I need to become a parent who’s a better believer. And I don’t need a list of ways to change my kids; I need for the gospel to change me.

24 Will the Internet Kill Christianity?

The true fear, that I have seen in some of my peers and in some of the adults I have talked with, is that if Christianity, as a movement of religion, takes ground in secular culture then we risk being mis-portrayed and "contaminated". True Christianity is not a religion, it is a FAITH, the faith that raised people from the dead and still heals people. That faith never dies and is stronger than the power of death and the grave. Faith can't be "contaminated" and no one can make a good argument to say it is fake. Christian religion has denominations, which are all to some degree wrong because they were made by men. God didn't say, "Hey my children! Lets have like, IDK, 10 or more different versions of my love for you. Just stick to the basics of Jesus' sacrifice and you'll be fine." He said The Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule, everything Jesus said, and everything I spoke to you is true. If followers of Christ will stick to the basics of Christianity and let the Holy Spirit convict them of all other things (which will be smaller personal choices that can be taken on by others), we can actually be appealing to modern culture.

27 When Doing Church Becomes a Burden

reat article. Just felt that way this last Sunday. I think this is prone to happen when one does lot's of work, and ironically there are no other volunteers to help or maybe one is not proactive in making spaces available for others to work. Precisely it is part of our common gene, as Church raised people or childrens pastor involved work. I give thanks to the Lord, that he has been raising new teams to ease the burden that most of the time we take on ourselves. There is a need for those to work constantly to rest and be ministered, and for those who are ministered all the time to serve.

Judging Who Is Worthy—and Who Is Not

M ost people view reality TV as a guilty pleasure. I tend to agree—that it can be a pleasure to watch and that we should feel rather guilty for it—but not just for the reasons you might imagine (exploitation, public humiliation, greed). Shows which prey on the lives of the desperate to wring a few emotions out of the audience are nothing but reformulated morality plays, crafted so viewers are placed in the enviable position of judge and jury, deciding who is worthy and righteous, and who is not—a position that the Bible makes clear was never meant for us.

42 Sustained Pax6 Expression Generates Primate-like Basal Radial Glia in Developing Mouse Neocortex

During development, neural progenitors generate all cells that make up the mammalian brain. Differences in brain size among the various mammalian species are attributed to differences in the abundance and proliferative capacity of a specific class of neural progenitors called basal progenitors. Among these, a specific progenitor type called basal radial glia is thought to have played an important role during evolution in the expansion of the neocortex, the part of the brain associated with higher cognitive functions like conscious thought and language. In the neocortex, the expression of the transcription factor Pax6 in basal progenitors is low in rodents, but high in primates, including humans. In this study, we aimed to mimic the elevated expression pattern of Pax6 seen in humans in basal progenitors of the embryonic mouse neocortex. To this end, we generated a novel, transgenic mouse line that allows sustained expression of the Pax6 gene in basal progenitors. This elevated expression resulted in an increase in the generation of basal radial glia, in the proliferative capacity of basal progenitors, and, ultimately, in the number of neurons produced.

Are Atheists Correct When They Claim Mental States Are Merely Brain States? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

We Could Imagine the Existence of Mind without Brain (and Vice Versa) To make the situation even more difficult, most philosophers and scientists acknowledge the metaphysical possibility a mind could exist without any brain at all. One could imagine, for example, extra-terrestrial creatures who might be physiologically different from humans, possessing minds with completely different physiologies (and without any neuron activity at all). Philosophers have also proposed examples of brains without minds. All of us are familiar with the fictional concept of zombies, but from a philosophical perspective, zombies are an important hypothetical proposal. Imagine a human being who is identical to you in every physical and functional way, yet without any mental life whatsoever. From a philosophical perspective, zombies seem metaphysically possible, and if they are, strict materialism is false. We could exist like zombies, yet we don’t. As humans, we possess more than the simply physical, behavioral and functional abilities of zombies; we have a mental life over and above the purely physical life of zombies.

3 Reasons Why Your Teaching Style Matters

For Christian educators, effective teaching and learning must be more than a set of strategies. Rather, their motivation should be rooted in Scripture and aimed at influencing the world for the glory of God. Teachers must be committed to knowing and caring for their students as individuals. This certainly creates more work for teachers, but one-size-fits-all cannot be the mentality. All types of students in our churches deserve equal opportunities to participate in quality learning experiences. After all, we are communicating the most important truth ever told! We should be committed to delivering this truth to our students in accessible and meaningful ways as we participate in the Great Commission and cultivate church communities that give the world a foretaste of New Jerusalem.

“If your Roku causes you to sin, tear it off and throw it away, lest your entire body be cast into hell” (Matthew 5:29-30). OK, so Roku wasn’t a popular device during the time of Second Temple Judaism. But Jesus’ warning nonetheless applies to this very subject—and it goes beyond forbidding us from what constitutes as porn (though it certainly does do that, at least). Jesus says we should go to the utmost extremes to prioritize our love for God and cultivate holiness in our lives.

Two Books About—and For—Widows

“All widows need the spiritual comfort of the church’s ministry,” Walker acknowledges, “but not all widows have identical circumstances” (77–78). Yet most of Croft’s practical ideas for serving widows presume she is elderly. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one-third of all women who become widowed are younger than age 60, and half of those widowed become so by age 65. Most see elderly widows as the most vulnerable. Yet younger widows, faced with becoming the primary breadwinner and caregiver for a young family, endure entirely different but equally daunting circumstances. While the authors do reference younger widows, they offer little in terms of practical suggestions on how to encourage them.
