Every Christian an Apologist

Apologist? – does this mean we go around apologizing to everyone? No. In the classical sense, an apologist is one who gives an answer or a reasoned defense for what he believes or how he acts. When the apostle said that we are to be ready to “give an answer”, the Greek word (apologia) from which the English word “apologetics” is used. Similarly, when people are said to be “without an excuse”, the same Greek word, except in the negative, is used.

10 Ways the Bible Uses Apologetics

Does the Bible itself provide a universal, context-free, step-by-step apologetic system we can apply to any and every apologetic situation? No. But it does offer tools and principles we can apply to our current cultural location, enabling us to think biblically about apologetics.

Rethinking Our Apologetics: 2 Historical Jesus Sources

In an effort to provide evidence for the historical Jesus, many apologists rightly go for extra-biblical sources to make their case. However, it’s also very easy to overstate the evidence. Personally, I think there are some really good extra-biblical references to Jesus (like Josephus and Tacitus), but I also think there are some questionable ones too!

What's So Special About Christianity?

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Apologetics as a Spiritual Discipline

“Only those who truly doubt can truly believe” is a quote I sometimes hear attributed to Augustine.  Whether he said it or not, it contains a grain of truth.  The simple fact is we all doubt.  Even someone like me who devours apologetic books like hippies devour kale chips goes through periods of doubt.

Apologetics 101: Someone Knocks at your Door

I have taken a couple Christian apologetics classes. Apologetics is a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the Christian Faith. Defending not just our doctrines (ex: why is salvation by grace alone?) but also defense in comparison to other religions (why do we believe that Jesus is the Son of God and not another prophet like the Islamic faith?).  It is a fascinating study; there is a lot of history, scripture and study of other religions involved. In my head, I had little arguments that I was ready to use…until someone knocked on my door.

Why Did God Use Wind to Split the Red Sea?

God is not going to force anyone to believe in Him. He split the Red Sea with an east wind to show His power over nature, and also to invite the Israelites to trust Him. And yet He gave room for the skeptic to deny Him. And He does the same for us today.

The Definitive Ranking of the Presidents of the United States

8. Martin Van Buren (8th President- original ranking- #7):  How do you analyze a man who was perhaps first and foremost a politician? Though that word has become something of a pejorative depending on its usage now, Van Buren didn’t play the system so much as he created one. He created what would develop into the modern day political party, taking what Andrew Jackson had started and running with it. He did so on a local and then national level, leveraging it to eventually become President of the United States. His continuation of Jackson’s policies towards Native groups caused enormous harm. His outright support of slavery may be baffling in light of his being remembered by contemporaries as a voracious abolitionist, but this change in policy was later in life and cynics may argue that it was a policy of convenience. He struggled as President to get much passed, largely due to his shouldering the blame for the economic crisis that greeted the beginning of his Presidency. His political skill helped create our modern political system, for better or ill. No matter what you think of him, he does at least give me the chance to use my new favorite phrase of this list: “He’s still a better President than Andrew Jackson.

For Alfred Russel Wallace, Natural Selection Opened the Door to Teleology | Evolution News

For Wallace there was no contradiction, no tension. It is hard not to see Fichman’s “supreme irony” in this. While natural selection was Darwin’s naturalistic drive train, Wallace found that natural selection opened the door to teleology. Where utility failed, teleology entered. The exaggerated forms that Wallace alluded to in his 1856 essay on the orangutan and the wonderful colors and plumage of some birds were perhaps just beauty for beauty’s sake. But Darwin had no room for such a notion. He answered with a subsidiary source of evolutionary change in sexual selection. The peacock’s tail became Darwin’s favorite example. “Ornaments of all kinds, whether permanently or temporarily gained,” he insisted, “are sedulously displayed by the males, and apparently serve to excite, or attract, or charm the females….All naturalists who have closely attended to the habits of birds, whether in a state of nature or under confinement, are unanimously of [the] opinion that the males delight to display their beauty.” Wallace rejected this as anthropomorphism. But that was not all. If natural selection was primarily the elimination of the unfit, then existing species could only be culled not really created.

Some Candid Questions for Evangelical Supporters of President Trump | The Stream

I think many of us Evangelicals have been wearing rose colored glasses when we watched our supported representatives proclaim Christian values attending religious ceremony talk the talk but publicly NOT walk the walk with the vigor close to what we see from this President. Watching the power of Hollywood grow with its openly anti Christian rhetoric wasn’t addressed by any Christian group or push back from GOP. I hate to keep going back to Hollywood in my posts but Christians sadly underestimated the impact it’s subject matter had on the views of so many generations. We retreated …as a sign of disgust but then it came into our homes and by placing key messages in character development and story development they defined what was hate and negativity and it was Christianity bolstered by liberal academia. When Ronald Reagan with others alerted the government to the socialist agenda systemically moving its way through Hollywood …and that it was a huge threat he saw the future. The thing is Ronald Reagan with the help of Pope Paul did something about it all while being ridiculed for his Bonzo movies.

The Missing Link: The Case for Pre-Apologetics

Atheist gets her PhD in astronomy and astrophysics and finds evidence for God

If anyone is interested in how this works, I’ll describe it, but for now I’ll spare you the gruesome details. Suffice it to say that an amazing convergence of physical properties is necessary in order to study deuterium abundances in the early universe, and yet this convergence is exactly what we get. I remember being astounded by this, blown away, completely and utterly awed. It seemed incredible to me that there was a way to find the answer to this question we had about the universe. In fact, it seems that every question we have about the universe is answerable. There’s no reason it has to be this way, and it made me think of Einstein’s observation that the most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it’s comprehensible. I started to sense an underlying order to the universe. Without knowing it, I was awakening to what Psalm 19 tells us so clearly, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Learning about Christian Creeds, Part 1

It is widely used in Western Christendom, both in the Roman Catholic Church and in various Protestant churches (Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian, Anglican, Methodist, Congregational, among others). In fact, most evangelical churches have creedal statements that serve as something like the Apostles’ Creed. Some nondenominational churches even sing the creed in their worship services.

32 What Leads ‘Christians’ Away from Christ?

We, instead, submit ourselves and our happiness to “the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). He is not simply a Savior to us, but also Lord and Treasure. We die to ourselves — our sinful desires, our impulses, our glory — to worship God and pursue his glory. We know the temporary pleasures of food and sex and money look more satisfying than they are and pale in comparison to all we have in Christ. We surrender some thin pleasures now to have full, thick pleasure forever.

33 Haters Gon’ Hate: A Liberating Truth for People Pleasers

But blessed are you when they hate and exclude you for his name’s sake. Blessed are you when haters hate, for it is evidence that you are his (John 15:19). “Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you” (1 John 3:13), but rejoice. For “it has been granted [literally, “graced”] to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake” (Philippians 1:29). Endure, and you will be sons of the Most High, and your treasure will be great in heaven (Luke 6:23).

34
DOES THE EXISTENCE OF SO MANY RELIGIONS ARGUE AGAINST THEIR TRUTH CLAIMS?

Instead, we can take these many denominations as a testimony to the truth and vibrancy of the Christian faith. Even though so many had a problem in their church and sought to establish another denomination, often, they didn’t venture far from the tree. In their disappointment or anger, they didn’t start a new religion, but simply tweaked the faith they had received. This testifies to the fact that they were still convinced of the truth of the Christian faith. The very fact that innovators have ventured forth to create many different forms of bread doesn’t testify to the lack of viability of bread but rather to its viability. Likewise, those who have ventured out to form a new church or denomination were actually affirming the surpassing truth of Christianity and their commitment to its truth.

Ten Reasons "Tent Makers" Make Great Christian "Case Makers" | Cold Case Christianity

Tent-Making Christian Case Makers Thrive in Any Economy I started thinking again about the power of tent-making Case Makers after reading Lydia McGrew’s fantastic post, “ An Army of Tent Makers .” Lydia is a brilliant Case Maker who continues to have a powerful impact even though she’s not a vocational apologist. In her post, Lydia discusses the current financial climate and the limited opportunities for people seeking full-time employment as apologists. While it’s often difficult to find full-time employment in the field of Christian apologetics or start a donor-funded apologetics ministry in a challenging economy, tent-making Case Makers aren’t limited by bad economic climates. In addition, as Lydia points out, “In the end, if we can have this army of tentmakers, there will be (Lord willing) money to allow some people to work in full-time ministry. But it’s going to be quite a small proportion of those who are interested or would ideally like to do so.”

Do moral dilemmas undermine objective moral absolutes?

If someone objects and says, “No, you must always tell the truth. After all it is an absolute, and absolutes by definition can never be violated,” I would point out that they are just using a different hierarchy, putting truth telling above protecting the life of innocent people from torture and murder. There is no way to avoid making a judgment like that since more than one absolute does apply to the situation. I would just ask them to think it through again, and once they see that they have to make a judgment based on some sort of hierarchy in that situation, then I think most people’s moral intuitions will affirm that protecting the lives of innocent people from torture and murder, in that situation, trumps truth telling. There is no way to avoid choosing one over the other.

God's Hiddenness Is Intended to Provoke Us | Cold Case Christianity

God could certainly overwhelm each of us with His power and fame. He could appear to us in the kind of tangible ways skeptics often request. But if God wants His children to love Him without being overwhelmed in this way, He would have to approach us in some form of “disguise.” He would have to hide his power and glory for a time. Christianity affirms this kind of effort, as Jesus Himself came to us in the form of lowly man, voluntarily accepting the limits of a human being and hiding the full capacity of his glory and power. Jesus continues to modestly court His bride, and as a result, those of us who love Him, do so genuinely . Someday God will expose us directly to His power and glory, confident that His bride, the Church, truly loves Him. God’s present hiddenness provokes us to a genuine form of love, and that has likely been His goal all along.

Doesn’t Bible Condone Killing One’s Rebellious Child?

If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. And they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.
