When God Messes with Your Life Plan

Are you in a place you never expected to be? Has God taken you on a path you never would have willfully chosen? Take heart. God hasn’t deserted you. He hasn’t forgotten you. He hasn’t made a mistake. He knows exactly what he’s doing. He knows exactly what you need and where you need to be.

When we witness the anguish, the anger, the questions, the devastation that comes to families that experience the death of a child, we find ourselves desperate to figure out what we can do, what we can say, that will truly help. In the retreats my husband and I host for couples who have faced the death of a child, participants often talk about the ways people have “been there” for them in the midst of the worst pain they can imagine, as well as the ways people have added to their pain. If you could be a fly on the wall at one of our retreats, here is some of what you would hear them say about how best to minister to them.

Merit and Moses (Part 4) | HeadHeartHand Blog

For myself, my own concerns about RP have grown as I’ve increasingly come into contact with people who are using the RP to argue against any place of the law in the Christian life. They hear RP teachers saying that Israel obeyed the law to merit the land, but the NT believer is no longer under that arrangement. Thus they conclude, we don’t need to obey God’s law any more. Again, I know that’s not what RP intends but it is such a complex and confusing system that even those who have heard it explained many times still struggle to understand and communicate it accurately. I remember the first time I heard the RP preached, I thought, “What on earth was that?” To some degree, I still feel that sense of bafflement. With theology, I’ve often noticed that the more complex a system, the more likely that it’s wrong.

11 Smells That Are Slowly Disappearing

That aroma we smell today upon delivery of a brand new set of wheels is very different from the new car smell of 30 or so years ago. A lot of that smell comes from off-gassing synthetic materials, plastics and chemical additives that are used in modern vehicles. In 1960, the average American-made car contained 22 pounds of plastics; in 2012, that quantity had increased to 250 pounds. And there’s also matter of the flame retardants and antimicrobials that are now added to the carpeting and upholstery for additional “safety” (even though some of the fumes have been proven toxic).

9 EQUIP, Christian Articles, Bible Answer Man | CRI

How do biblical ethics apply to hermaphrodites? The term “hermaphrodite” is derived from conjoining the name of the Greek god Hermes with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Today, hermaphroditism is appropriately referred to as “intersex” or as a “disorder of sex development” (DSD). Regardless of the term used, confusion reigns on how to respond to this […]

Rand Paul: We Must Demilitarize the Police

Anyone who thinks that race does not still, even if inadvertently, skew the application of criminal justice in this country is just not paying close enough attention. Our prisons are full of black and brown men and women who are serving inappropriately long and harsh sentences for non-violent mistakes in their youth.

7 talks on the struggle of mental health

To all appearances, Eleanor Longden was just like every other student, heading to college full of promise and without a care in the world. That was until the voices in her head started talking. Initially innocuous, these internal narrators became increasingly antagonistic and dictatorial, turning her life into a living nightmare. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospitalized, drugged, Longden was discarded by a system that didn't know how to help her. Longden tells the moving tale of her years-long journey back to mental health, and makes the case that it was through learning to listen to her voices that she was able to survive.

God Does Not View Your Labors as ‘Filthy Rags’

It is terribly confusing when people say that the only righteousness that has any value is the imputed righteousness of Christ. I agree that justification is not grounded on any of our righteousness, but only the righteousness of Christ imputed to us. But sometimes people are careless and speak disparagingly of all human righteousness, as if there were no such thing that pleased God. They often cite Isaiah 64:6, which says our righteousness is as filthy rags. . . . [But] when my sons do what I tell them to do—I do not call their obedience “filthy rags” even if it is not perfect. Neither does God. All the more because he himself is “working in us that which is pleasing in his sight” (Hebrews 13:21). He does not call his own, Spirit-wrought fruit, “rags.” ( Future Grace , 151-152).

11 Lessons from the Church in China

9. The zeal for evangelism. Sharing the gospel has remained a top priority for the church in China despite the growing pains of the last 20 to 30 years. The church takes advantage of opportunities to share the good news with a lost world. For example, Western culture has influenced many of its churches to believe that holidays like Easter and Christmas are family-focused, causing us to turn inward. The Chinese church, however, looks at every holiday in the church calendar as a gospel opportunity. Large evangelistic programs are planned and lost friends are invited to church. Such events are usually packed with students, many of whom later say it was a first step toward their coming to faith.

Third, I've learned that it's not enough to simply accept the condition of blindness, but to reach out for help from others. A physically blind person doesn't say, "I know I'm blind, but I'm going to go about my day alone." No, they reach out to their community for assistance and guidance.

Divine Child Abuse?

Even more glaringly, the child-abuse charge ignores the clear New Testament witness to the unique identity of Jesus. Not only was he not a child; he was not a mere human. He was God: the eternal Logos, the divine Son, the Lord before whom every knee will one day bow (Phil. 2:10). This is no helpless victim. This is the Father’s equal. This is one who in the most profound sense is one with God; one in whom God judges himself, one in whom God condemns himself, one in whom God lets himself be abused. The critics cannot be allowed the luxury of a selective use of the New Testament. The same scriptures portray the cross as an act of God the Father and also portray the sufferer as God the Son, and the resulting doctrine cannot be wrenched from its setting in the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. The “abused child” is “very God of very God.” It is divine blood shed at Calvary (Acts 20:28) as God surrenders himself to the worst that man can do and bears the whole cost of saving the world.

Should Expository Preaching Edify or Evangelize? - Prince on Preaching

Almost eleven years ago, when I became the pastor at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, a well-meaning church member came to me with a request, “When you are going to preach an evangelistic sermon, will you let me know? I would like to bring lost friends on those Sundays.” I responded, “Sure, I can take care of that right now, I’m going to preach an evangelistic sermon every Sunday.” He said, “You know what I mean; I’m talking about a really evangelistic sermon.” I hope that eleven years later he would say I have kept my promise and that I preach a really evangelistic sermon every week.

Parkinson's, depression and the switch that might turn them off

Deep brain stimulation is becoming very precise. This technique allows surgeons to place electrodes in almost any area of the brain, and turn them up or down — like a radio dial or thermostat — to correct dysfunction. Andres Lozano offers a dramatic look at emerging techniques, in which a woman with Parkinson's instantly stops shaking and brain areas eroded by Alzheimer's are brought back to life. 12 Unbelievable Photos From Ferguson, Mo.

Over the weekend in Ferguson, Mo., an unarmed 18-year-old black man named Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer. The incident is under investigation by the St. Louis County police department and reports indicate the FBI has opened a “civil rights investigation” of the shooting. Meanwhile, riots and angry protests have erupted for five consecutive days and nights in defense of Brown. As unrest grew, police used tear gas to dissolve crowds. These photos are a brief look into the chaos that has engulfed the St. Louis suburb since Saturday.

Why Does "Am I Called?" Exist?

Each week all over the world, there are men – often younger but sometimes middle aged or beyond – who earnestly wrestle with a nagging question. They have dreams and drives. They query friends, consult pastors, exhaust mentors, and sometimes even apply to Bible schools and seminaries – all to discover the answer to the question that refuses to be ignored:

When God saves a sinner from His wrath and curse, He creates a new person. Yet, we will never be completely sinless in this life; in fact, sometimes it can feel like we are getting worse. As we grow in our love for God and our understanding of His holy nature, we become more profoundly aware of the depths of our sinfulness. However, this growing awareness of and grief for our sin indicates that a breathtaking transformation has already taken place within our hearts, minds, and wills. The forgiven sinner is liberated from patterns of sinful behavior and is conformed more and more into the image of Jesus Christ. Although we may still wrestle with sin and doubt, Scripture proclaims that the old has gone and the new has come.

'The Leftovers' Renewed for Season 2; Writer Says Show Ignores 'Theological Implications' of the Rapture

There was a bit of speculation over whether or not the series would be renewed as it took HBO a considerable amount of time to come to the decision. The show's pilot, which aired in June of this year drew 1.8 million viewers. Even with its slow-burn storytelling, "The Leftovers" still continues to bring in a significant audience, according to the report.

Naïve ministries won’t survive in Camden, but Seeds of Hope is different: It’s so street savvy that the police department sometimes calls the ministry staff when making arrests. “The chief, he knows the problems in the city weren’t going to be solved with handcuffs and guns,” said Seeds of Hope’s co-founder Brenda Antinore, a former high-school teacher. Her husband Bill was a successful lawyer, and they had three children and a nice suburban home—but both became addicted to cocaine and drove into Camden to buy drugs.

5 Ways to Simplify Your Life

I know you’re really excited about what all your friends from 10 years ago are doing with their lives, but wouldn’t your time be better spent calling up your best friend from college and talking to her about her adorable 1-year-old rather than “liking” the picture she posted on Facebook? Try to cut it to less than one hour a day on all social media. Make it less than 20min/day if you’re feeling especially ambitious!

IRS Would Lose in Court Battle Against Churches Over 'Pulpit Freedom,' Says NRB Head

During the interview, Johnson explained to CP why churches would "have a constitutional case" when it comes to keeping their tax-exempt status even if they engage in polticial speech. The NRB president believes that the Johnson Amendment – which changed the tax code to prohibit nonprofit organizations, including churches, from endorsing political candidates while exempt from federal income tax – runs contrary to the rights and protection given in the First Amendment.

On Science and Faith: Responsible Investigation and Charitable Debate, Not Whac-a-Mole

In our charge to reach the world with the truth of Jesus Christ, matters of science and faith are often front and center. I’ve seen conversation after conversation spin out of control, going down rabbit trails that wasted a lot of time with little progress to show for it. We are, ultimately, fighting against the philosophy of naturalism, which says there has been no intelligent input in the formation of the natural world, that a Creator is unnecessary. This is where the line is, friends. This is where we must battle with shrewdness, knowledge, and compassion for all fellow men. You may oppose the theory of biological evolution, but in the grand scheme of things, what you need to demonstrate is the necessity of intelligence behind the material cosmos. At the end of the day, if a person is strongly convinced by the evidence that all animals have a common ancestor and you insist that the idea of common descent is diametrically opposed to Christianity, what have you really accomplished? You’ve alienated someone that may very well have been open to hearing the Gospel. Use scientific data to make good arguments for the existence of God and intelligent design of the cosmos and living things, but don’t get bogged down in lesser issues (note that I did not call them “unimportant” issues).

7 Characteristics of a Double-Minded Believer

Satan has been at his craft for many centuries. And just as he knew what "triggers" to employ with Adam and Eve, he has discovered a variety of enticements that are intended to lead believers to become double-minded. Satan hates to see believers fully surrendered to the Lord. The devil knows from past experience that when a Christian is fully surrendered, God works even more miracles in the lives of His people.

3 Ways to Pray for Our Enemies

Another, less frequent, reason we don’t pray for their conversion is because we fear they may actually repent. Like Jonah in Nineveh, we want our enemies to receive their just desserts, not mercy and forgiveness. Consider all of the Christians who dutifully prayed for the Nazis. How would they have felt if they discovered that Hitler, in the moments prior to his death, had truly repented of his sins and was forgiven by God? Many of those Christians would have felt cheated, as if it was unfair of God to forgive such horrific crimes. They would likely want to complain, as Jonah did when God spared the Ninevites, “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity” (Jonah 4:2)?

What Do I Use to Write in My Bible?

My usual pen of choice is a BIC 4-color ballpoint pen, Fine Point, which has the orange barrel. There is a medium point version, which has a blue barrel. It contains four fillers in one barrel, so it’s a little “fatter”in cross section than a single-color pen. The ink is conventional ball point ink. This one instrument has the advantage of providing a choice of colors for different emphases. There occasionally seems to be some variance in the density of the ink in some colors, particularly the green, which seems a little faint at times. This trait varies depending on the pen.

Luke 10:25-37 is a passage that speaks directly to issues of social injustice and how God expects his children to respond. In this text, a lawyer approached Jesus with a question regarding how one inherits eternal life. Jesus asked the lawyer to provide his interpretation of the law. The lawyer complied, and Jesus informed him to live out the two summary realities of the law: Love God holistically and love your neighbor as yourself.

UN Accuses ISIS Terrorists of 'Barbaric' Sexual Violence; Declares Highest Level of Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq

Displaced people from the minority Yazidi sect, fleeing violence from forces loyal to the Islamic State in Sinjar town, walk towards the Syrian border, on the outskirts of Sinjar mountain, near the Syrian border town of Elierbeh of Al-Hasakah Governorate August 10, 2014. Islamic State militants have killed at least 500 members of Iraq's Yazidi ethnic minority during their offensive in the north, Iraq's human rights minister told Reuters on Sunday. The Islamic State, which has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria, has prompted tens of thousands of Yazidis and Christians to flee for their lives during their push to within a 30-minute drive of the Kurdish regional capital Arbil.
