Secularism: The Cosmos Is All That Is

Secularism is expressed in popular advertising slogans such as “You only go around once” and the “Now Generation.” These slogans dominate our culture and express an outlook that has become increasingly harmful. If “now” is the only time that matters, why should we worry about the national debt, for example? Let our children worry about it. Or why should we study hard preparing to do meaningful work later on in life, as long as we can enjoy ourselves now? Most important, why should I worry about God or righteousness or sin or judgment or salvation, if there is no beyond and now is all that matters? R. C. Sproul says:

Young Earth Creationism Does Not Have Historical Pedigree

An analogy might be helpful here. To say that the early church agrees with modern young earth creationists would be like saying the early church agrees with modern modalists. Why? Because, after all, many modern modalists claim to be able to uphold the Apostles’ Creed, which, after all, never speaks of distinction of persons in an explicit enough way so as to exclude modalism. Thus, a modalist could say “Our view is from the Apostles’ Creed.” Now of course this is an extreme example, and one could argue at length as to whether the modalist is actually agreeing with the historic Creed, however, the point is that simply finding a single point of doctrine with which one agrees does not mean that one holds to an historic Christian view. It is instead to treat a system of doctrine as something which may be broken apart piecemeal into individual affirmations and then find one of these affirmations with which one agrees. But that doesn’t show one agrees to the system, only to one decontextualized part.

5 EQUIP, Christian Articles, Bible Answer Man | CRI

Should Christians be tolerant? Today tolerance is being redefined to mean that all views are equally valid and all lifestyles equally appropriate. As such, the notion that Jesus is the only way is vilified as the epitome of intolerance. Rather than capitulating to culture, Christians must be equipped to expose the flaws of today’s tolerance, […]

Four Moments I’m Preparing Students to Face

As a result, in our ministry we try to monitor the expectations students have of the Christian life. We acknowledge that some people have a more emotional faith with real spiritual experiences, while others have a more cerebral faith without mystical moments. We do not want kids to think that getting a “Christian high” validates whether or not God is real.

Well To Start With, Your Last Theologian Was A Idiot - The Scriptorium Daily

Have you noticed this? It seems like a repairman can’t start working until he has roundly condemned the previous repairman. It’s not enough to say, “I would have done this differently,” or “there are three approaches to this kind of problem, and while I prefer A, this person seems to have chosen C.” No, the previous repairs must be utterly denounced as wrongheaded in conception and bungled in execution. The technician who was here before was a trousered ape, a traitor to the manual arts, a criminal psychopath who tortures houses for fun. What was that mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging chucklehead thinking? What a cheap, shortcut-taking, counterproductive, maladroit hack of a bungler. What a total idiot.

How Should We Respond to Ann Coulter’s Article on the Ebola Doctor?

I understand his strong reaction, and disagree very much with her article, but the fact that she was willing to state her views so clearly serves one vital purpose: it forces us to think hard about what the Scriptures teach and helps us refine our understanding of the truth.

Grace to You

Garments in the Bible were always an expression of wealth. In Judges 14:12 Samson told the Philistines that if they could answer his riddle, he would give them “thirty linen wraps and thirty changes of clothes.” But there is one problem with garments—moths eat them. Have you ever noticed that moths don’t eat what you wear, only what you store? We tend to hoard, and a lot of our treasure is invested in our garments, waiting for moths to destroy them.

Eight Traits of Good Teaching

The outer circle, then, is comprised of “qualities that characterize both spiritual and non-spiritual leaders.” Piper gives 18 of these traits. One is skill in teaching. “It is not surprising to me that some of the great leaders at our church have been men who are also significant teachers. According to 1 Timothy 3:2, anyone who aspires to the office of overseer in the church should be able to teach.”

how many times are people going to say that, when it comes to healing, it is down to good living, timing to heal, and other things? prayer is a powerful tool for Christians to use, some use it to great benefit, others don’t, some would say, if it doesn’t happen immediately, then GOD is not there, and lose their faith because of it? how many times has SATAN healed a person by them praying to him? how many people can say they have been healed after praying to JESUS to be healed for something they have or had? I’ve seen and been the recipient of quite a few healings in my time how many wiccans have been healed by their faith to SATAN?

Is It My Fault?

These truths should be obvious, but for someone in an abusive relationship, they’re anything but. And I’m not sure how obvious they are to some of us who aren’t. For example, we tend to look at marital problems and try to figure out how to divide responsibility equally between spouses. While some measure of “shared blame” is certainly warranted in most relationships, we need to be careful to not apply this assumption too broadly. Sometimes, it really is the problem of just one person—and in the case of domestic violence, in whatever form it takes, it is always the abuser’s fault.

7 Very Important Bible Verses That Signify The Importance of Your Faith

"Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." This is the biblical definition of faith from Hebrews 11:1. Faith is assurance, a know-so not hope-so way of understanding why things happen. Below are some of the most important verses in the Bible on faith:

An Open Letter to My Friends Struggling with Eating Disorders

You, friend, are not your eating disorder. I know you cling to it for protection, but your identity is being consumed, versus identified. Your E.D. has become your idol, and it’s only when you see it for what it is — a lie, from the enemy, who wants God’s sons and daughters to die — that you will be free to pursue the dreams God has for you. Eating disorders are a spiritual battle, and I believe Satan attacks young men and women who have been called by Jesus to move mountains with him. I believe you, friend, have been called to do something mighty in your life, and Satan is using this E.D. as a distraction so that you cannot step into the plans God has for you. You are more than your E.D. You are more than a conqueror in Jesus (Romans 8:37). Your identity is now defined and determined forever by your union with Christ.

3 Dating Non-Negotiables

The policy was not for the faint of heart, I learned. But by my mid-twenties, I felt like it would be wise to be more intentional in my dating. Why? Not only was I a pastor – which meant I'd never be able to satisfy anyone's dreams of luxurious living – I was a pastor who planned to spend most of his life working overseas. Even I could have made a good argument for a woman to keep her distance.

Is NASA Really on the Verge of Finding Extraterrestrial Life?

The ultimate question that most astrobiologists are seeking to answer is something like, "What is the probability that there are other planets with life?" The answer must incorporate the complete history of the Universe, including galaxy, star and planet formation and evolution. It is becoming clear that cosmology is not irrelevant to the formation and continued existence of habitable planets. The most basic elemental ingredients of planetary systems come from stars. Stars form and die in a galactic context, and galaxies form, interact and evolve in a cosmological context. At every scale, stochastic processes shape planetary systems, and they must be modeled with Monte Carlo methods. Processes with stochastic aspects occurring on the surface of a planet include volcanic eruptions, tectonics and climate. Asteroid and comet impacts can be triggered by planetary perturbations and nearby stellar and giant molecular cloud encounters. The location and timing of specific supernovae and gamma ray bursts cannot be predicted. Encounters between galaxies can trigger star formation, threatening already-formed planets and spawning new ones.

A Regional Supermarket Shakeup and America’s Split Corporate Culture

The 71 Market Basket stores attract and keep customers for two reasons: their prices tend to be 15-20 percent lower than their rivals, and they offer exceptional customer service—in part because the chain pays above minimum wage and offers both health benefits and bonuses. All workers display their years of employment on nametags. I’ve shopped in many of their stores during the past eight years, and it’s not uncommon for “Marie: 31 years” to simultaneously scan my groceries and offer her opinions on my choices: “Don’t you love this ricotta? I’m so glad we started carrying it.”

Bankruptcy Helped Me Love My Neighbor

In the spring of 2013, our tenant called to tell us she and her friends could no longer keep up. Suddenly, my wife and I were in big trouble. We tried to sell, but discovered that so many homes had been foreclosed on in Mt. Auburn that the price of real estate had dropped over 50%. Eventually we called the mortgage provider for our rental property, to let them know we could no longer keep up with our payments. We hoped they would take the property from us, or agree to a short sale, or work with us in some way. Every time we called, however, we talked with a different person, none of whom had any record of our previous conversations. We even completed the short sale application twice, but the next time we called, all that work had disappeared.

The Longsuffering of God Has a Limit

To a judgmental sinner in Romans 2, Paul wrote, "Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance." In other words, the reason He has not yet judged you for your sins is not because He is looking the other way or because He doesn't care. Rather, it is because He is being extraordinarily kind to you to give you the opportunity to repent.

Sola Sisters: Documenting the Problems with Mars Hill Pastor Mark Driscoll [UPDATED]

Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.

The doctrine, commands, rituals, structural authority and discipline (religion) Jesus has given us in the institutional church calls us beyond momentary passions to faithful permanence and provides us a binding framework to express and nurture our love for Christ. Marriage is a covenantal and communal act, and so is our faith in Christ. Christianity is not “me and Jesus.” It is better than that. We owe millennials an apology. We allowed marketing and sloganeering to trump truth in trying to get them in our churches. It is time we tell them the gospel truth. Jesus loves religion and they should, too.

Confessing My Racism

As someone with relatives and close friends of various ethnicities, I was horrified by my own thoughts. Each time it happened, I begged God for forgiveness and a change in heart. At first, I hoped God and I could work it out privately. But you can't address something as long as you pretend it isn't there. And racism causes inherently communal destruction. So I confessed my thoughts to others at church and asked for their prayers. The thoughts continued.

Mental Illness and the Healing of Jesus — Part 2

I understand that concern, and actually share it. In fact, I used to avoid the language of healing with regard to spiritual issues for the same reason. Then I grew in my understanding of the authority and sufficiency of Scripture. The authority and sufficiency of Scripture means that we must not allow secular psychology to have the role of determining how we speak about the counseling problems people face or their solutions. God gets to decide how we refer to the issues people face in their lives, not psychology. If we refuse ever to use the language of healing for spiritual matters, we’re guilty of the same kind of rejection of the sufficiency of Scripture as those who insist on referring to teenage rebellion as obstinate defiant disorder. Neither person is using God’s language to describe problems and solutions.

Hamas' Political Interests Overlook People's Needs, Palestinian Activist Says

Palestinians sit outside their damaged house as they look at a neighbouring house, which witnesses said was destroyed in an Israeli air strike, in Gaza City August 9, 2014. Israel launched more than 20 aerial attacks in Gaza early on Saturday and militants fired several rockets at Israel in a second day of violence since a failure to extend an Egyptian-mediated truce that halted a monthlong war earlier this week. The Israeli military said that since midnight it had attacked more than 20 sites in the coastal enclave where Hamas Islamists are dominant, without specifying the targets. Palestinian witnesses and officials said the air strikes lasted through the night, that two mosques were destroyed and three houses were bombed, and that fighter planes had also strafed open areas.

47 How Do I Find a Good Church? - Christian Research Institute

In addition to being prepared to communicate the what and why of our faith, we must be empowered to communicate the Who of our faith. Virtually every theological heresy begins with a misconception of the nature of God. Thus, in a healthy well-balanced church believers are equipped to communicate such glorious doctrines of the faith as the Trinity and the deity of Jesus Christ. It is crucial that we, like the early Christian church, come to understand more fully the biblical concept of the priesthood of all believers. Clearly, it is not the pastor’s calling to do the work of ministry single-handedly. Rather, the pastor is called “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature” (Eph. 4:12–13).
