Why Training is Mandatory for Apologetics

One of my hobbies is training in Martial Arts.  Specifically, an Israeli system called Krav Maga . It is a realistic system of combat developed for the Israeli military that parts of which are now being taught to civilians.  The core of Krav Maga is instilling muscle memory so that students and quickly learn and develop skills necessary to survive a violent encounter.

Justin Bieber and The Meaning of Marriage - The Gospel Coalition | Australia

When I woke up this morning to see social media splashed with photos of Justin Bieber holding a copy of the Keller marriage book, I made an uncharacteristic move to take a second look at Justin Bieber. My daughter might sing along to Bieber, but he’s not exactly listed very high on my spotify playlist!

Late July 2018 Presuppositional Apologetics’ Links

Thanks for this list Jim! I followed the link “Slapping down Christians and Creationists”, and discovered “Wretched Radio”! I don’t usually listen to podcasts (data cap), but that was fascinating. It was the first time I heard of Ken Ham. I said a prayer for him, ’cause it sometimes seems that internet trolls know no mercy. There were other things I learned from the show as well. I knew that I am a creationist, but I now know that I am also a “young earth creationist”. I have been for years, I just didn’t know they had a name for it. I’ve just been believing that The Bible says what It means (with perhaps other messages which are revealed to us when we’re ready). Is “Wretched Radio” just an internet podcast, or is it also on the airways somewhere?

What Does the Bible Say About Purgatory? | Cold Case Christianity

My mother was a cultural Catholic for many years, and although she was quick to identify herself with Catholicism, she had a limited knowledge of the Church’s teaching. Worse yet, she wasn’t yet a robust Bible reader. When I eventually became a Christian, I found myself examining several claims of Catholicism to see if they were true. Catholics believe in purgatory, “ a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God’s grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions .” The notion of purgatory assumes many of us die with unforgiven sins that need to be purged from our account; some of us are not good enough to go to heaven, but not bad enough to go to hell. Purgatory, therefore, is a temporary, intermediate place (or state of being) where good deeds and works can be performed in order to purge our impurity prior to our final destiny with God. Although millions of Catholics believe purgatory to be a reality, the idea needs to be tested in light of the Scripture. Is purgatory

The Sower's Apologetics Profile - When is Apologetics Effective?

What is the effectiveness of apologetics ? The Holy Scriptures tell us that God has revealed himself to mankind but that humanity as a whole does not want God (Romans 1:18-20). This leads people to create crafty ways in which to avoid God. Jesus also revealed the inner depths of the human psyche in this exchange of God’s wooing and the human response to that truth in the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-23, Mark 4:2-20, Luke 8:4-18). In this parable, the sower (one who relays God’s truth) scatters seeds (the truth of God) and the seeds fall on four different kinds of ground (types of human dispositions).

Dear Young Apologist,

But then the unexpected happened.  A person in the audience asked a question.  “Mr. Bates,” they said, “How did Sam Harris defend his position in the book?  What was his reasoning?”  This was a problem for me, because I hadn’t actually read the book!  My only knowledge of Mr. Harris’ work at that point had been to read another apologist’s review of the book.  I froze.  I had no idea what reasoning was used.  There was no way to answer this question honestly!  I’m not proud of myself for this, but in order to save face, I fumbled my way through some generically condescending remark about Harris’ inability to really explain it.  I walked away from that experience with an important insight that I had never honestly thought about.  An insight that might seem common sense to some, but that I feel needs to be shared.  Simply put, the insight is this…

15 Pop Culture Primer: Movies | Think Christian

“White people,” Baldwin wrote, during the heat of the Civil Rights Movement, “want to believe Birmingham is on Mars; they don’t want to believe there is one step actually or morally between Birmingham and Los Angeles.” One of the strengths of the film is the way it shows us that “Birmingham” is, indeed, only one step from anywhere in America. Peck layers the film with images that connect Baldwin’s words to the country’s past and present: we see the dead bodies of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., then see the faces of Trayvon Martin and Tamir Rice. We see images of a white mob attacking those at a lunch counter sit-in during the Civil Rights Movement; we then see images of white policemen beating Rodney King, as well as Eric Garner pinned down on the sidewalk. The past and the present mingle, and Peck makes us witnesses; we see and cannot deny the connections.

3 Christian Urban Legends That Need to Die

In the late '60s, American culture was all abuzz with the rumor, "Paul is Dead." The supposed fatality of the beloved member of The Beatles became a cultural phenomenon, leading many young people to analyze the band's artwork and lyrics for clues. The "fake news" of the day was that Paul McCartney had died, and been replaced by a look-a-like. The gossip finally died down when Paul was interviewed by Life magazine in 1969, and he later poked fun at the rumor himself by titling his 1993 album, "Paul is Live."  Thus the tall tale faded into urban legend.

I watched my first graduating class of seniors walk away from Christianity

In my experience as a youth pastor, I learned the importance of providing intellectual tools and training. I watched my first graduating class of seniors walk away from Christianity in large percentages before I embraced a Case Making approach with my students. Evolution’s Flawed Approach to Science

Adding to this concern is the impact that the evolutionary paradigm has on scientific advance. Because many in the scientific community view biological systems as fundamentally flawed, they are predisposed to conclude—oftentimes, prematurely—that biological systems lack function or purpose when initial investigations into these systems fail to uncover any obvious rationale for why these systems are the way they are. And, once these investigators conclude that a biological system is flawed, the motivation to continue studying the system dissipates. Why try to understand a flawed design? Why focus attention on biological systems that lack function? Why invest research dollars studying systems that serve no purpose?

The intention of this blog is to define some of the most common fallacies and to offer examples in an attempt to reduce their prevalence.

A Case for Creation 101: God's Nature - The Trinity

A misunderstanding that many people have about Christianity, especially those in other religions such as Islam, is the concept of the Trinity. Christians are often accused of “poly-theism” (worshipping multiple gods). However, this is not what Christianity teaches about the Trinity. As we study through Genesis you will notice times where God uses the plural term “We” or “Us,” and there are many times throughout the Old Testament where people meet God in human form, often referred to as a Christophany or Theophany. In addition, the New Testament gives us many examples where Jesus Himself claims to be God; and it is through the Holy Spirit that believers are given revelation and power to do God’s work. The concept of the Trinity is not a problem for Christianity, it is a solution to what we find about God and His nature in the Scriptures.

When the Dystopian Tells Us the Way the World Is | Stand to Reason

Ironically, Niccol’s way to explore a better world is to give us dystopian ones. Maybe he starts with the way things shouldn’t be because it’s a great starting point: No one thinks the world is as it should be. But here’s the problem for secular moviegoers: If there’s no God, then there is not a way “the world should be.” There’s no standard or purpose for anything, so the very idea of the cosmos being “broken" makes no sense. But even though the atheist’s worldview cannot support notions of objective moral “better” or “worse,” they still yearn for a morally “better” world.

Is Public School an Option?

Is public school an option? For Christians who take the Christian worldview seriously and who understand the issues at stake, the answer is increasingly no. The number of Christian parents coming to this conclusion increases each year. We can understand the nostalgia that many Christians hold about the public schools. I spent every minute of my school life from the first grade to high school graduation in a public school. And yet, I saw the ideological transformation of the schools before my own eyes. Long ago, the public schools entered a Brave New World from which no retreat now seems possible.

30 My Real Recovery from Anorexia

If you struggle with an eating disorder, don’t give up. Ask for help from your church, your friends, support groups, and professionals. Moving forward may seem frightening — like losing a part of yourself. But Jesus’s call to change is not fleeting. He calls us to follow him to find life in its fullness. Eating disorders promise life and easy answers — then deliver misery and death. Following Jesus means that we die to who we were, but discover all we were made to be.

Pentecostalism May Have Done More for Africa Than All Aid Organizations Combined

"Progressive Pentecostalism is more prominent in developing countries than it is in the Western world. The emphasis on the prosperity gospel overshadows the emergent phenomenon of Progressive Pentecostalism, although these two emphases are not mutually exclusive. For example, sometimes prosperity gospel preachers give members the courage to dream beyond their current circumstances, and this vision becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Also, it is important to acknowledge the ways in which Pentecostalism gives dignity to women and people who are poor, telling them that they are made in the image of God and therefore have rights, both personal and political."

35 Who Created God? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

Richard Dawkins, the famous English evolutionary biologist and renowned atheist, revived an objection related to God’s existence in his book, The God Delusion. In the fourth chapter (Why There Almost Certainly Is No God), Dawkins wrote, “…the designer hypothesis immediately raises the larger problem of who designed the designer. The whole problem we started out with was the problem of explaining statistical improbability. It is obviously no solution to postulate something even more improbable.” In essence, Dawkins offered a restatement of the classic question, “Who created God?” On its face, this seems to be a reasonable question. Christians, after all, claim God created everything we see in our universe (all space, time and matter); He is the cause of our caused cosmos. Skeptics fail to see this as a satisfactory explanation, however, because it seems to beg the question, “If God, created the universe, who (or what) created God?”

When We Spend More Time Arguing About How to Make the Case than We Spend Making the Case | Cold Case Christianity

Even though I have learned a lot from my years investigating difficult cases, it’s important to continue to examine crimes to “stay in the game”. While investigative theories, principles and approaches have been critical to my success, I can’t call myself an investigator if I’m not actually involved in investigations! And at this point in my life, I’m simply not willing to stop calling myself an investigator. As I have transitioned into the world of professional Christian Case Making (Apologetics), I’ve come to realize that there are many people who think deeply about how we ought to reach the lost and less time actually employing the principles they advance. In fact, some of us get easily sidetracked into philosophical and theoretical discussions that actually distract us from reaching the world around us.

“Ray Comfort is probably the very bottom of the creationist barrel. He is the worst of the bunch.” —Professor P.Z. Myers "There is no refutation of Darwinian evolution in existence. If a refutation ever were to come about, it would come from a scientist, and not an idiot [Comfort].” —Professor Richard Dawkins “You know you’ve made it when you’re in a Ray Comfort film.” —Jaclyn Glenn What do you do when the world’s most famous atheist mocks you internationally on television and throughout social media? What consolation can you find when you become known worldwide as atheism’s celebrity idiot? You look to the Scriptures and take consolation in how Joseph was humiliated before the time came when God opened a big door of opportunity for him, and how Moses was abased before God opened a big sea for him. You take comfort in knowing the principle of humiliation before promotion—that God often takes someone low before raising him up for His use. And that’s what happened when Ray Comfort was christened “Banana Man” by Professor Richard Dawkins. Millions came under the sound of the everlasting gospel, all because of that humiliating name: Banana Man.
