Five Bad Reasons Not To Study Apologetics

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:44) Many quote this verse to show that apologetics is useless in evangelism. Of course, nothing will work if the Holy Spirit isn’t involved. Not apologetics, not sharing the gospel, not preaching, nothing.

What Is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil? - Christian Research Institute

To begin with, God placed the tree in the middle of Paradise as a test; Satan perverted it as a temptation. In eating from the tree about which God said, “When you eat of it you will surely die,” Adam challenged God as arbiter of good and evil (Genesis 2:17).

Is Jesus Simply a Copy Cat of Mithras? (Podcast) | Cold Case Christianity

In this blast from the past, J. Warner examines the historicity and nature of Jesus Christ. Before we can even look at who Jesus claimed to “be”, we need to make sure He existed in the first place. Critics claim that Jesus is simply a re-telling of the Mithras mythology, copying Mithras’ virgin birth, death and resurrection and many other similar details. But is Jesus truly similar to Mithras? Are there good reasons to expect ancient seekers to create a God that is similar to the true God of the universe?

Cold-Case Christianity for Kids is Finally Available! | | Cold Case Christianity

Cold-Case Christianity for Kids: Investigate Jesus with a Real Detective is written for 8- to 12-year-olds and corresponds to the chapter sequence of the adult version of the book, so parents and kids can study together (I love that!). Even though 8 to 12 is the target age range, you can absolutely use this with 6- or 7-year-olds if you’re working through it with them and helping them understand the concepts. My 7-year-old son was so engaged by it that he read the first 60 pages in two days after receiving it.

"Tent-Making" Christian Case Makers on Facebook | Cold Case Christianity

The growing interest in Christian Case Making has resulted in an explosion of “tent-making” apologists across the Internet . If you’re beginning to recognize your calling as a Christian Case Maker , there are a number of ways you can begin to make an impact on the culture. You can teach a class at your church, begin a blog or website, write a newsletter, start recording videos on YouTube, or inaugurate a new podcast. If this feels a bit intimidating, there may be an even easier way to get in the game. Most of us are familiar enough with Facebook to navigate and interact with our friends and family. This is also an excellent platform for initiating conversations bout the case for Christianity. Today I want to feature several Christian Case Making groups on Facebook. These groups are interactive, and once members join they have the ability to post and comment on all the content being discussed within the group. All of them were started by “tent-makers”. These faithful Christians come from a variety of occupations and lifestyles (I’ve listed the administrators for each group):

Does It Take More Faith To Be An Atheist?

Using their definition of faith, I can see why the hosts of Ask An Atheist take exception to this. In fact, when we have the correct definition of biblical faith, then you understand that we all have faith. Christian faith is similar to the faith described by the one host who talked about having two decades of evidence to support her trust in her husband. We all have to put our trust in the evidence, and I’m convinced that Christians have a far greater amount of evidence to put our trust in compared to atheism. That is why it takes more faith to be an atheist.

CRI Resource: CRI18072A - Christian Research Institute

Why People Stop Believing by Paul Chamberlain This book addresses a growing need in apologetic literature. It is a response to the growing wave of Christian leaders who are rejecting Christianity and becoming some of its most ardent critics, often supported by a plethora of new organizations arising to encourage such people to cut ties to their faith. This is a new challenge from a different breed of critics who are using their instant credibility and insider’s knowledge of theology, the Bible, church history, even apologetics, to debunk the faith they once believed and promoted. They have taken aim at the foundations of Christianity, including God, the Scriptures, miracles and the supernatural, and Christianity’s perceived inherent prohibition on free enquiry.

Encryption System Found in Genes | Evolution News

Now, according to the scientists at Aarhus, the specific position of the m6a mark appears highly relevant not only to the type of messenger RNA produced — and thus the protein to be translated — but also to the rate of production. If the m6a mark is placed near a splice junction, the constitutive transcript is produced quickly (i.e., exons are arranged in the order they were transcribed). If the mark is placed on an intron, it slows down the splicing, and might produce a completely different transcript with a different protein resulting. Is this a method to achieve cell-specific regulation?

How (Not) to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts

Is it important to know your spiritual gifts? Or is that concern evidence of the narcissism so characteristic of our culture today? Perhaps we can compare figuring out our spiritual gifts to the current interest in personality tests and profiles like the Enneagram. The Enneagram explores nine different personality types and has made quite a splash in evangelical circles. Kevin DeYoung rightly warns  about the dangers of the Enneagram, explaining that it’s alien to Scripture in many respects. Russell Moore is sympathetic to what DeYoung says, agreeing that the Enneagram isn’t helpful if embraced root and branch, but thinks it can be used as a tool to discern and understand one’s potential strengths and weaknesses, as well as the motivating desires and inclinations of others. I think we can say something similar about the process of discerning spiritual gifts. Spiritual Gift Tests? Over the years, it has been popular to use spiritual gift inventories and questionnaires to help believers discover their spiritual gifts. The major problem with these tools is that they’re an abstraction; we can take those tests and try to discover our gifts without being involved in the life of the local church.

Bible Contradiction? Who sent the Holy Ghost?

I was so focus on answering this Bible contradiction I didn’t think much about the Church’s Filoque controversy until you commented so thank you for bringing that up. In my view the controversy was quite early in the Church before there was Romanism and Eastern Orthodoxy (well before the East and West church split in what, 1096 or 1090s?). Of course this is one of the doctrines that led to the split and disagreement between the Latin speaking and Greek speaking churches which I personally don’t necessarily label as Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox since at that time there was still “One” Catholic (universal) Church. I do think the Western “Churches” (including Protestants) are right to see Jesus also sent the Spirit because it says so in Scripture. Some of the discussion between East and West in the past doesn’t make sense to me for instance the Eastern churches saying the Western churches has no right to modify creeds since there was not a council or universal agreement of the total Church to say the Son also sent the Spirit. This already presuppose a certain theological method but for one who hold to Sola Scriptura its not my method but we go by what Scripture says.

Neuroscientist Michael Egnor, the Philosophical Physician, on Science and the Soul | Evolution News

Try to read this through to the end without getting chills. It’s an essay by neurosurgeon Michael Egnor, our friend and contributor, on “ Science and the Soul .” Writing for Plough Quarterly , he starts very strikingly this way:

36 How Our Sex Life Manifests Our Soul Health

1. The connection between Romans 1:23 and 24: “[They] exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images . . . ” Verse 24: “Therefore” — that is a very important word — “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves.” So, the exchange vertically in verse 23 (they exchanged the glory of God) results in God handing them over to horizontal dishonorable passions of the body in lust. Where does lust come from? Where does the brokenness of our God-given, beautiful sexual reality come from? Where does that brokenness come from? It comes from the brokenness of exchange.

37
The Origin of Evolutionism: It Didn’t Begin with Darwin

I proclaim to you God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, “For we are also His offspring.” Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead (Acts 17:23–31; NKJV).

Fantastic Voyage: How Could Noah Build the Ark?

Another factor must be raised. Consider the implications of building such an enormous boat out of wood over the course of many decades. Exposed to the elements, wood tends to warp and decay as it endures heat, cold, and changes in humidity. Imagine trying to complete one part of the Ark decades after another section had been built. The earliest parts of the construction might need repair by the time the Ark was finished. Of course, Noah coated the Ark inside and out with pitch, but we do not know how well this treatment could prevent warping and decay, and we do not know the qualities of gopherwood in these regards.

44 Spiritual Growth Is Not an Accident

When it comes to us, as “plants” (trees or branches), we see the same design of our sovereign God: what we do, or don’t do, really matters. How precisely our real responsibility works with God’s ultimate sovereignty is not a mystery God means for us to solve. It’s a truth he means for us to trust. The important thing we need to know is that if we draw from the stream or from the vine, we will have all we need to tend the gardens God gives us.

The Bible Isn't Answering Your Questions

Let’s face it. The Bible is a big book with lots of strange stories and images. It is sometimes difficult to know what anyone should take away from it. Let's not forget how hard it can be to read for non-Christians and new believers. Even Christians struggle with this, especially reading through obscure Old Testament genealogies and ritual laws for cleansing. The underlying logic seems to escape us. The Bible is strange and that's because the God of the Bible is strange.
