Doug Wilson Takes on Gay Activists in Q&A

I agree when you ask what is in store for the church in the next 10, 20, 30 years. Gosh, I am impressed by Doug Wilson to stand up there and not back down in front of all these hostile students. At the same time, I’m wondering if there were conservative students who would fire back at the pro-gay students. I don’t really “feel the pain” for gays (empathy not my strong suit), but I feel an overwhelming desire to protect or defend Christians who get attacked. It’s like if you see someone burning the flag. I hope the church does not cave out of fear of gay aggression. There used to be men who would be burned at the stake rather than compromise. There was a fierceness to their faith. The same is needed again today. I fear too many Christians have been raised to be nice and polite but not how to handle hostility towards their faith.

Behind the Scenes with Dwight Eisenhower, Billy Graham, and the Makers of American Civil Religion

Kruse explains how many things Americans take for granted came to be: the presence of “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, the adoption of “In God We Trust” as a national motto, the annual “presidential” prayer breakfast, and the presidential practice of ending speeches with “may God bless America.” Although “In God We Trust” has a longer history, many elements of American civil religion have their roots not in the American founding but in the more recent past.

Calvinism and the Christian Life

It is impossible to encounter God’s saving grace and not be powerfully and permanently changed. John Calvin knew this. In this new 6-part teaching series, Pastor Ian Hamilton demonstrates that Calvinism is biblical, God-centered Christianity with important implications for our daily lives. This theology is not simply academic. It is a theology for all of life—a theology in which the grace of Jesus Christ shapes everything.

6
Should We Legislate Morality?

I think it is where do we draw the line. We all agree that we should legislate morality. Murder and theft are only wrong because of our God given sense of right and wrong. Animals kill and steal food and nesting sites and there are no consequences because they are not created in God’s image, they have no conscience. So some would draw a line in the sand and say as long as it does not hurt some one else it is ok and we should mind our own business. To the Christian sinful actions can cause others to stumble in their walk with God or to keep them from finding salvation all together. Each and every sin done in public or with a second person hurts another person or person. Keeping a person away from eternal life with God is the most harm one can cause another. Christians have a difficult time expressing this view in a manner that does not seem like we are all just a bunch of control freaks trying to keep everyone in line. The ultimate goal is that none should perish.

Blessed Without Assurance

But I’ve come up short of that. Which isn’t to say that what I’ve found is insufficient. It is sufficient. The Scriptures and the person of Jesus are sufficient for my searching. They are sufficient for the heart-wrenching questions of a mom who wants to know that her son will be with God forever, even though he may never understand the gospel, or make a profession of faith, or be baptized, or take communion, or be considered a member of our church.

What Friendship Is Made Of

We know that marriage creates a new family and a friendship, but maybe you’re like me and don’t quite realize that those two aspects of the married relationship are one and the same. There is a reason Paul couches his exhortations about what it means to be a loving Christian couple in the same section of Ephesians that talks about what it means to be a loving Body of Christ. The two are inexorably related. Loving our husbands well is a part of loving well in our community.

Oregon to Christian Bakers: Pay $135,000 by Monday or Face a Potential Lien on Your Home

Yesterday I wrote a piece about how Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) acted as investigator, prosecutor, judge, and jury as it pursued Aaron and Melissa Klein for refusing to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding (though they would happily serve gay customers for other requests.) Now, the same agency is donning its “enforcer” hat and is giving the Kleins until July 13 to pay the $135,000 damage award or face a potential lien on their house. BOLI’s spokesperson has the details:

WORLD | Be on guard | Marvin Olasky | July 11, 2015

Critical to all of this is thinking through what compassion means. Former lesbian Rosaria Butterfield (see “ Journey of grace ,” March 23, 2013) emailed me: “The idea that a church cannot be welcoming without being gay-affirming on membership issues runs exactly counter to my experience. … Welcoming people to sin—and twisting the meaning and purpose of church membership in the process—does not welcome anyone to Christ. When my gay-affirming friends ask me why I do not support gay ‘marriage,’ I tell them that Christians are called to be good neighbors and good neighbors who never put a stumbling block between a fellow image bearer and the God who made us.”

"“I had a dream that my dad passed away and that Jesus came into the room and he was basically knocking on my door saying ‘hey you need to find out more about me.’ So that Sunday morning I end up going to church and that’s when I got saved,” Wilson said. “It was that moment, when I realized dreams were really real, because my dad ended up passing away six years later. I think that got me through a lot of adversity. I used to beat up kids and fight kids and do stuff all the time, but I realized God had given me so much, so many talents. How Jesus Became God in the Flesh - Apologetics Book: New Book: How Jesus Became God In The Flesh: Bart Ehrman Refuted

In my search for truth, I’ve discovered that anti-biblical worldviews lack a foundation that can provide the necessary preconditions for analysis, including textual analysis. I thought I stumbled upon the smoking gun. My first notice of the smoking gun—the one that refuted hypercritical scholarship—gave me both intellectual satisfaction and great delight. But that wasn’t the only occasion I've enjoyed such a sensation. It also occurred when other historical and linguistic smoking guns were uncovered—the Hebraic language structure of the text pointed to the early production of the Gospels. Similarly, internal and external data revealed the historicity of the New Testament claims about Jesus of Nazareth.

Muslim Groups Raise Thousands to Help Black Churches that Have Burned

The American Muslim community cannot claim to have experienced anything close to the systematic and institutionalized racism and racist violence that has been visited upon African Americans. We do, however, understand the climate of racially inspired hate and bigotry that is being reignited in this country. We want to let our African American brothers and sisters know that we stand in solidarity with them during this dark hour. As a small symbol of that solidarity, during this blessed month of Ramadan, we are gathering donations to help rebuild the seven churches that have been burned down since the racist murders in Charleston, South Carolina.

Faithful Thinkers: Observational Science vs. Historical Science?

Reliability of the Bible We Have Today If historical science cannot be trusted to give us knowledge about the past, then (the supporter of the distinction between observational and historical science will conclude) we must rely upon the "Word of God, who was there." Unfortunately, we have a serious problem here. If current phenomena cannot be extrapolated into the past and the past cannot be known, then all evidence that we have for the reliable transmission of the text of scripture (especially the earliest portions of it) cannot be known to be what was actually written. This actually is a problem for two reasons. If past events necessarily cannot be known (and thus must be doubted) simply by definition of being "in the past," then so should every event that led to the reliable transmission of the Bible through history be doubted. However, there is another reason that it fails. The critique above undermines any knowledge of how physical processes work (in the present and the past), thus all dating methods used for the manuscripts cannot be trusted. So we would have no idea of where to place the different manuscripts on the historical timeline to even come close to a chain of events to build a case for reliability of the proper transmission of the text that we have today being what was originally recorded.

Think the "Billy Graham Rule" Would Have Saved Tullian? Think Again...

I wonder: have we lost so much trust in our own virtue that we cannot consider this kind of encounter as safe?  Keeping men and women from being alone together will only treat the symptom but not address the heart. Would it not be a better strategy if men developed the kind of virtue that transformed how they see and relate to women? I know many will continue to say that I am being naive, but doesn’t Jesus prohibit even the lustful look? The Billy Graham Rule is the Church white-knuckling the brokenness between the genders. It would not have saved Tullian from an "inappropriate relationship'.  What Tullian needed – what we all need – is a deeper healing, a new way of seeing women and men – a new way that is made possible in Christ.

A Guide to Church Revitalization

church willingly submits to the authority of Christ, there is no confusion about where the final word lies. Once during a deacons’ meeting, I had to confront a deacon about non-attendance at church. When he pointedly asked me where in the Bible it says we have to be at church, I replied: “Hebrews 10:25, ‘Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some.’” That ended the discussion. Only a church’s commitment to the authority of Christ has the power to do that.

Why Little Kids Need Big Biblical Words

I’m praying my daughter grows up into those words. I look at her the same way I look at a kid trying on mama’s shoes. The feet are too small and the shoes are too big, but one of these days, she’ll grow up and they’ll fit. That’s how we pray. That’s why we introduce foundational biblical truths. That’s why we teach our kids the Bible stories that challenge their assumptions, raise expectations, and point them to Jesus.

Why Independence in South Sudan Matters

At a diplomatic level, the UN Security Council recently imposed a new wave of sanctions on a number of South Sudanese military commanders, while an expanded peace process called IGAD Plus will now include the United States, the European Union (EU), and other African states in an attempt to forge a political settlement that can create peace in South Sudan. A newly appointed U.S. Ambassador, Molly Phee, also promises to elevate U.S. diplomacy in the country. On the ground level, many NGOs, including World Relief, continue to work to stave off famine by providing emergency food assistance to those recently displaced by the conflict.

What Do You Think Happened to the Emerging Church?

The coup did not work. The elephant in the room (the Emerging Church) was forced out. They assumed that Evangelicals would listen and exit the building with them. But what happened was not unlike a disrespectful teenager who thought that he suddenly had it all figured out through a series of unadulterated epiphanies. He tugged on the shirt of his parents letting them know how much more he knew than them and he was blown off because of arrogance. “Tsk, tsk” was the reply, “I remember when I thought I knew it all.” While the Emerging Church, as well as teenagers, do have some very good things to say and should be listened to (as Bono says, “Pity the nation that won’t listen to its boys and girls”), it is the (almost total) disregard of Evangelicalism’s values that caused them to lose their audience. Evangelicals were offended.

For as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription TO THE UNNKOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you; ‘God who made the world and everything in it, since He is the Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands, Nor is He worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath and all things. And He has made from one blood, every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and has appointed their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring’ “ (Acts 17:23-28).
