Hobby Lobby to Pay $3M Fine, Forfeit Biblical Artifacts Smuggled From Iraq

An expert on cultural property law retained by Hobby Lobby warned the company in October 2010 that the artifacts may have been looted from archaeological sites in Iraq. Hobby Lobby was also warned that if the artifacts were improperly declared to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the artifacts could be seized and forfeited.

Five Reasons God Wants Christian Women to Do Apologetics

I thank God for creating rational, intelligent, thinking humans, each of whom is either male or female. His plan. He commands each of us to love Him with all our hearts and minds and souls and strength and to love others as ourselves, and to speak the truth in love. His plan. The highest love is to give everlasting life, and God has done that through Jesus. His plan. He commands us to proclaim the gospel to humans who do not know Him or His great gift of eternal life, so they might experience Him eternally and bring glory to Him. His plan. Gender does not negate His commands. The command of 1 Peter 3:15-16 defines apologetics. The woman at the well met Christ and ran to tell everyone, presumably both genders, what she had experienced. Priscilla and Aquilla taught Apollos. This blog acknowledges that women as well as men have the privilege and calling to spread the gospel with the people God puts in their path; it is not a call to overthrow the pulpit. This website is a valuable resource in helping us learn how to be better prepared for our work.

Getting Hurt By the Church Doesn’t Mean You Should Abandon God

I realized that my strongest experiences of worship don’t usually happen when life is going well. It’s when life is going poorly and I’m in the middle of a storm and I still stand and sing glory that I most intensely experience God’s nearness and greatness.

The Challenges Facing Young Christians

They Are Challenged by the Media Young Christians are challenged very early, beginning with their first exposure to television, movies and the internet. Much of the media is aligned against Christian values, and Americans spend about one-third of their free time, (more than the next 10 most popular leisure activities combined) watching some form of television. The messages communicated by television programming are often in direct opposition to the teaching of Christianity, and students are deeply impacted by what they absorb from the media. Two out of every three shows on television, for example, include sexual content (a dramatic increase over the past 15 years). 50% of the couples involved in sexual behavior in television programming are depicted in casual relationships (10% of these couples had just met, and 9% of television programs depict sexual behavior between teens). In a set of Kaiser Family Foundation studies, 76% of teens said that one reason young people have sex is because TV shows and movies “make it seem normal”. College students who were exposed to the many examples of sexual behavior on television were more likely to believe their peers engaged in those same activities.

How Do We Help the Next Generation Navigate Culture?

Perhaps the most important question students should be asked and taught to ask is, “What do you mean by that?” This important question can bring much-needed clarity amidst all the information out there. For instance, we often find ourselves using the same words as others in our culture, but not meaning the same thing. When it comes to words like love, truth, freedom, God, gender, and purpose, the Christian’s dictionary will be very different than the culture’s dictionary. When we equip students with good questions, we help them find clarity in the language and ideas of the culture. Next, we then teach them how to employ those questions when they are watching a movie on Netflix, listening to their college professor, or having a conversation with their Muslim friend.

Yes, Gay Activists Are After Your Children | The Stream

I`ve had a few discussions with my 11yr old nieces about the alphabet cults over the last few yrs and the wrongs of what they`re doing and thinking with themselves. My nieces have been well and truly indoctrinated with the propaganda spouted by the education system, media and worse, their mother(my sister) whom herself has been indoctrinated with fairness and equality and acceptance through her 32 yrs of English life by the education system and media. The most common line is they`re doing nothing wrong if they love one another and aren`t harming anyone else, this is the one we hear and see all the time by the cult followers and is not the thoughts of a young girl who would not be thinking of such things but for the brainwashing. One of the nieces(twins) was more convinced by my arguments than the other and stuck to her line of its not wrong if they love each other. I learned that their father had advised them not to listen to anyone trying to convince them of religious beliefs until they`re old enough to weigh the arguments for and against, yet he allows them to be indoctrinated with all these other harmful, deviant beliefs.

NPR Tweeted the Declaration of Independence on July 4 and Some People Flipped Out

Every year, NPR reads (and lately, tweets) the Declaration of Independence to celebrate the Fourth of July. It’s a time-honored tradition but, this year, for some reason, a truly depressing number of people took it the wrong way. The Declaration was, of course, a call to arms—a rallying cry to overthrow tyranny and establish a new government in its place.

Should I “Dream Big” for God When I Have a Huge Ego?

So, my response is: Go ahead. Dream your big dream. Do your work, lots and lots of it. But never, never presume that you are doing it on your own. “What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it [as though it were not a gift]?” (1 Corinthians 4:7). Every dream is a gift. Every accomplishment of a dream is a gift. And when we get to the end of life, we are going to say — I hope we are going to say — with Martin Luther on his deathbed, these last words out of his mouth: Wir sein Bettler. Hoc est verum. “We are beggars. This is true.”

Why Religious Freedom Should Matter to Absolutely Everyone

Why Religious Freedom Should Matter to Absolutely Everyone by Mikel Del Rosario Religious Freedom in a Pluralistic Society Why should religious freedom matter to everyone? Because the value we put on religious liberty shows how much we really care about freedom. If you’re going to be able to work for the common good—with people from all sorts of backgrounds—the law has got to protect your freedom to live by your convictions. But what is religious freedom? Religious freedom is a civil right that comes from God, not the government. Why should it matter even to people who aren’t religious? Because religious freedom upholds freedom of conscience for both religious and non-religious people. What is Religious Freedom? Religious freedom is a civil right which doesn’t ultimately come from the government. The founders of our nation knew this. All they did was recognize the rights God already gave us. That’s why they wrote The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution–to protect our intrinsic rights from being infringed upon by the federal government. Having religious freedom doesn’t just mean you have the right to believe certain religious claims are true.

Refuse to Settle for Singleness

If we thought and felt about singleness the way God thinks and feels about singleness, none of us would ever “settle” for singleness. We might long to be married, and pray for God to bring us a husband or a wife, and pursue a godly person God puts in our path, but we also will prize every precious second of singleness God gives us, because it’s filled with its own unique joys and purpose and blessings.

15 Things to Start Doing By the Time You’re 30

By the time you hit 30, there’s a good chance the routine of family, job, bills and adulthood limits the free time that was once a part of twentysomething life. Creating margin—to read, volunteer, pray, travel or just do the things you want to do—is easy to neglect with the stresses that come along with being a thirtysomething. Do yourself a favor: Make margin in your day-to-day life, and don’t try to fill every waking moment with more busyness.

Thinking Clearly about God and Evolution

C hristianity Today recently had a cover story reporting on Christians who claim that human beings could not all have descended from a single human couple. That story was a symptom of a current trend: more and more Christians, even self-identified evangelicals, claim that Christians must make their peace with evolutionary theory. In recent years, scientists such as Francis Collins, Karl Giberson, Ken Miller, Darrell Falk, and others have written books defending theistic evolution or evolutionary creationism . The historical reality of Adam and Eve is obviously central to historic Christianity; but it is just one of many issues that, as Christians, we must consider when exploring the broader debate over God and evolution. Unfortunately, the debate is often marred by confusion and ambiguity. Though we can’t discuss every related issue here, let’s see what we can do to think more clearly about the subject.

God Can Rebuild What Porn Ruined: Loving a Husband Battling Lust

It is only after preparing our minds for action that we can start to resist conforming to the passions of our former ignorance (1 Peter 1:13–14). My former ignorance, my deceitful heart, was yearning for justice. There was no earnest love for my husband (1 Peter 1:22), only self-righteous indignation and haughtiness. My own sins seemed to pale in comparison to the sin of lust. I had declared myself judge and jury, and my husband did not stand a chance.

Enduring Personal Identity Requires God

The rigid materialist, under his worldview, would not be married to the same woman he married nine years ago. They are totally different physically, due to the complete replacement of bodily atoms every seven years. If he has a child over the age of seven, then by the atheist’s standard he is not the same child who was born to them. Therefore, if he wanted to be consistent in his worldview, he should throw away all baby pictures along with his wedding album. Every molecule in his body has changed. And in a strict materialist world, he is a different person. But he will not throw away his baby pictures or his wedding album, because he is basing much of his life on the truth of theism. The atheist husband still hugs his wife without being unfaithful to her. He will still take his kid to the park and buy him a balloon. But he will not buy the stranger who is next to him a balloon. The atheist knows that his child is the same child who was born to him years before. He lives much of his life on the truth that the Creator exists. Can the information in one’s DNA be the basis for personal identity? No, since twins have the same DNA but they are two different individuals.

Survival of the Fondest: Love Defies Darwin and Defeats the Devil

I thank God for good apologists. They do important kingdom work. But the most compelling work Christians will ever do is not going toe-to-toe with Darwinian theorists over scientific evidence for God’s existence or with materialist philosophers over sophisticated arguments. Love is the most compelling apologetic for God’s existence and Christ’s sacrifice on earth: for “by this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

Natural Explanations and A Supernatural God | Cold Case Christianity

A “Supernatural” God in the “Natural” World? But how can we, as reasonable Christian observers, tell the difference between a series of “unguided,” “natural” occurrences, and a series of events guided by the hand of God? How can we differentiate between a purely “natural” event and a uniquely “divine” miracle? Well, I think we begin by recognizing all “natural,” physical processes in the universe are sustained by God (Hebrews 1:3, John 5:17). The physics of the universe are simply a reflection of the active participation of God in his creation. It’s easy to separate the “divine” from the “natural” and think of the world in categories and boxes. Yet, this is not how the Christian Scriptures describe God’s creation. When we fail to see the forces of nature as the hand of God, we end up justifying all of God’s divine interaction as some form of “natural” coincidence. If we do this long enough, we’ll eventually fail to recognize those moments when God’s free agency is evident; those times when God clearly had to act dramatically to “knock something from the table.”

Please Don’t Tell Your Kids to Believe in God Just in Case He Exists

This response is the basic idea behind what is famously known as “Pascal’s Wager,” named for the 17 th century philosopher Blaise Pascal who first championed it. The gist of the argument is that humans should live as if God exists because we have everything to gain and nothing to lose from it—a safe bet. If it turns out that God exists, then you gain heaven and avoid hell; if it turns out that God doesn’t exist, you’ve lost nothing. So everyone should just believe in God, right?

Exposing the Underlying Worldview: Acts 17

Before looking at Acts 17 , it is important to understand the origin of religion; in order to know the meaning of anything, we have to understand its origin. The origin of religion began in the Garden of Eden when God clearly revealed himself to Adam. However, Adam and Eve rejected that revelation and chose to believe a falsehood about Him. In this act of disobedience, they chose to follow Satan’s worldview over God’s worldview ( Genesis 3:4–5 ). They created the first human religion, rejecting God’s perfect and true religion.

Why Are Young Christians Leaving the Church? It’s Simple Math | Cold Case Christianity

Young Men and Women Are Eager to Chase Their Desires with Liberty Most of us, if we’re honest, understand the temptation facing young Christians, because we’ve also experienced such enticements. As fallen humans, we’ve all experienced the temptation of youth. For many of our Christian students, their college years are the first opportunity they’ve ever had to be free of their parent’s consistent oversight. It’s also a place filled with attractive young people, many of whom don’t share their Christian worldview. Consider the strength of the temptation and imagine the selfish value of an alternative worldview allowing young students to chase their passions and desires without restriction, inhibition or guilt. For many, atheistic naturalism, with its alternate creation story, moral code, materialistic values and goals, is an incredibly attractive alternative to Christianity. The fallen inclination to chase our selfish desire is common to all of us, but it’s a critical driving force for many young students.

Why Are So Many Christians Unhappy?

It will not suffice simply to hold that there is one whom all ought to honor and adore, unless we are also persuaded that he is the fountain of every good, and that we must seek nothing elsewhere than in him. . . . For until men recognize that they owe everything to God, that they are nourished by his fatherly care, that he is the Author of their every good, that they should seek nothing beyond him — they will never yield him willing service. Nay, unless they establish their complete happiness in him, they will never give themselves truly and sincerely to him. ( Institutes , 1.2.1)

Ambush Satan with Song (New 3-Minute Video)

Why is it that Christians sing in worship? Christianity has produced centuries of music — high music, low music, middle music, happy music, sad music. Songs of worship and songs of gladness and songs of lament. Everywhere Christianity goes, God’s people sing. Why? We sing because our God is a God of grace. We sing, not only in response to his lavish grace — we sing because it is a means of God’s grace. We sing because singing is a God-given weapon against our greatest enemy.

Big Kids Should Cry More: Why Weeping Is Not Weakness

To cry, we reflexively believe, is to admit insufficiency and insecurity. We live in a culture that idolizes power and equates sadness with weakness. Suppress your tears, we learn, so that no one suspects you hurt. Conceal your heartache, and you can deny its very existence. If you blot your eyes and breathe deep, you can pretend the pain isn’t there, that it’s not corroding your heart and emptying you of all hope.

What’s Wrong with “The God of the Gaps” Argument

Over the years, I have had my share of discussions with atheists and skeptics about the existence of God. Any attempt to point to God as an explanation for observable phenomena such as anticipatory, irreducible or specified complexity can invoke the atheist or naturalist to cry “ foul play.” Many of these people tend to have faith that science will be able to fill in any gaps in our knowledge. Let’s try to clear up this misunderstanding.

How to Handle Criticism Like an Adult

There are three ways to do this. When criticism comes your way, the first thing you should do is take it to God in prayer. Ask Him to reveal truth in those critical moments, to bring comfort when you need protection from the enemy and to convict you when people need protection from you. Second, test it with Scripture. God is not going to speak through someone in a way that is contrary to His Word. Third, seek wise counsel. People who you love and trust will be able to protect you from harmful words but will also be able to tell you when you’re in the wrong and need to change.

Breaking News - Sister of the Earliest Complete Old Testament Found - Biblical Studies

The Greek New Testament, Produced at Tyndale House, Cambridge has been created under the oversight of editors Dr. Dirk Jongkind (St Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge) and Dr. Peter Williams (Tyndale House, Cambridge). While a few trusted Greek texts are in print, significant advances have been made in Greek translation studies of the New Testament since a standard text was adopted by academics in 1975. Together with their team, they have taken a rigorously philological approach to reevaluating the standard text – reexamining spelling and paragraph decisions as well as allowing more recent discoveries related to  scribal habits to inform editorial decisions. Ideal for students, scholars and pastors alike, and published to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, The Greek New Testament, Produced at Tyndale House, Cambridge is a groundbreaking contribution to biblical scholarship.
