Japan and the U.S. Are Going to Face Off in a Robot Battle

Real Steel is about to come to life. Last week, the American robotics company Megabot Inc., the makers of a giant piloted fighting robot, challenged a Japanese tech company, Suidobashi, who has their own pilot-driven battle-bot, to an old fashioned duel. And yesterday, they accepted. To be honest, at this point, the Japanese team, with their high-tech million-dollar machine, seem to have the advantage. Their robot is faster, lighter and far more advanced. However, if Rocky IV has taught us anything, it’s that America’s never been afraid to be the underdog. No exact date has been set, but the battle for international robot supremacy will likely go down next year.

MLK Speaks for the Charleston Nine

King’s insistence that unearned suffering is redemptive reflects a nearly 250-year-old tradition in the black church going back to the earliest Negro spirituals. Beneath the sweltering sun of Southern cotton fields, slaves shouldered on with the hope that their sovereign God could “make a way out of no way”—that, because of Christ, God would somehow bring good from the evils inflicted on them. This hope has carried black Christians through the brutalities of chattel slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow, and segregation. And this hope continues to carry them through the various forms of oppression, violence, and dehumanization they face today. This doesn’t mean suffering itself is good; it means that because of gospel we can be confident God’s omnipotent goodness will have the final say over every form of suffering, no matter how severe.

You Don’t Have to Plan Everything

Don’t get me wrong. Planning is a beautiful thing. God is a magnificent planner — in the bigness of the universe and the smallest molecules. Many things in life simply do not happen without planning. Stadiums aren’t built, sewer systems aren’t installed, power grids aren’t maintained, children aren’t educated, books aren’t written, churches aren’t planted, weight isn’t lost, and often prayer doesn’t happen without a plan.

Cheering Costly Obedience

My life of ministry includes fewer ships and seas than Paul’s, but that doesn’t excuse me from Christ’s call to take the gospel to the lost. Before leaving for Jerusalem, Paul spoke with the Ephesian elders and prayed with them. They wept, embraced, and said their goodbyes, but then the elders accompanied Paul to the ship. We can expect to experience grief and sorrow over our own impending afflictions as we count the cost of obedience, but sadness shouldn’t keep us from walking to our own ships or accompanying others to theirs as we wave goodbye for the sake of the cross. We must be men and women who practice and enourage faithful and costly obedience because we value God’s kingdom more than safety, security, and control.

Must the Creator Have a Reason for His Existence? | Come Reason's Apologetics Notes

This morning I had a quick discussion with a person who was trying to argue that the complexity of the universe is evidence against the existence of God. He claimed that if a Christian was to argue that the complexity of the universe points to God's existence, then as God is infinitely more complex than the universe (his actual term was "complex to infinity"), it makes it even more probable that God was created. He wrote, "less complex things have a far better chance of being eternal than an almighty god." Such an objection isn't uncommon among atheists. I've seen it frequently myself. As with a lot of retorts, this objection looks sound upon first glance. However, there are at least three rather large mistakes in reasoning in his assertion, they are important for Christians to recognize. Not Everything That Exists Must Be Created The first problem is one I've dealt with quite a bit. The questioner assumes that if one claims the universe has some kind of cause for its existence, then in order to be consistent, it's fair to ask what was God's cause? But the assumption itself is wrong.

Receiving the refugees of the sexual revolution...

When compared with children who grew up in biologically (still) intact, mother– father families, the children of women who reported a same-sex relationship look markedly different on numerous outcomes, including many that are obviously suboptimal (such as education, depression, employment status, or marijuana use). On 25 of 40 outcomes (or 63%) evaluated here, there are bivariate statistically-significant (p < 0.05) differences between children from still-intact, mother/father families and those whose mother reported a lesbian relationship. On 11 of 40 outcomes (or 28%) evaluated here, there are bivariate statistically-significant (p < 0.05) differences between children from still-intact, mother/father families and those whose father reported a gay relationship. Hence, there are differences in both comparisons, but there are many more differences by any method of analysis in comparisons between young-adult children of IBFs and LMs than between IBFs and GFs.

If we are going to live as disciples of Jesus, we have to remember that all efforts of worth and excellence are difficult.  The Christian life is gloriously difficult, but its difficulty does not make us faint and cave in— it stirs us up to overcome.  Do we appreciate the miraculous salvation of Jesus Christ enough to be our utmost for His highest— our best for His glory?

The only decision that matters

I am excited. While I would not choose this direction for our country or our culture, and though I lament the very real harm that this Supreme Court decision will do in millions of lives, I also believe that a sovereign God rules supreme in human affairs and He is at work making of the nations a heritage for His Son. The Triune God has not called an emergency session and will not be announcing a strategy of response to the latest development. He is working all things—even and especially this—to His glory for our good.

The Epidemic of Bible Illiteracy in Our Churches

Most pastors agree groups are important to the life of their church, but there's a disconnect between the stated importance and the reality of what's happening in most churches. Our research found 92 percent of Protestant pastors believe their people are making significant progress in their spiritual development, but more than half (56 percent) admit they don't regularly assess their personal growth. In addition, less than half (42 percent) say their churches have a "well-defined" approach to group ministry. Without a clear plan for small groups, your congregation is missing out on God's tool for transformation and growth.

Finding the Way Back

As a species, humans lack many of the biological gifts that allow other animals to get around. A loggerhead turtle, for example, begins to take its bearings within a couple of hours of hatching, using magnetite crystals in its brain to sense Earth’s magnetic field. (Spiny lobsters, monarch butterflies, and termites have similar compasses.) Honeybees get from nectar to hive and back in part by judging the position of the sun, which they can sense, even on a cloudy day, from patterns in polarized light. Where biology has failed humans, we have substituted culture. Throughout our evolutionary history, we have created ad-hoc systems of knowledge that organize environmental information and make it transmissible to the next generation. Often, difficult and monotonous landscapes—desert, sea, ice—resulted in more intricate systems. Several thousand years before the magnetic compass was invented, Pacific Islanders had worked out how to navigate by star compasses and read ocean swells for information about nearby land. (Part of Huth’s summer vacation this year will be spent in the Marshall Islands, learning similar techniques from local sailors.

Making Sense of Scripture’s “Inconsistency”

The entire book of Hebrews explains that the Old Testament ceremonial laws were not so much abolished as fulfilled by Christ. Whenever we pray “in Jesus name” we “have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus” (Heb. 10:19). It would, therefore, be deeply inconsistent with the teaching of the Bible as a whole if we continued to follow the ceremonial laws.

Why Two? The Question Gay Activists Cannot Answer

If marriage is not the union of a man and a woman, then why should it be limited to two people (or, for that matter, require two people)? Why can't it be one or three or five? What makes the number "two" so special if it doesn't refer to the union of a male and a female?

26 Supreme Court’s Re-definition of Marriage | Reasonable Faith

By redefining marriage the Court has handed homosexual activists what they have aimed and worked for: the deconstruction of marriage itself. Kennedy admits, “Were their intent to demean the revered idea and reality of marriage, the petitioners’ claims would be of a different order. But that is neither their purpose nor their submission.” How does Kennedy know what their intent is, and why should that matter? Although the majority opinion of the Court portrays the issue before the Court as the petitioners’ seeking the benefits of marriage, such an interpretation is naïve. Surveys show that promiscuity is rampant in the gay subculture, such that the number of homosexual men in lasting, monogamous relationships is so tiny as to be statistically meaningless. This is not about so-called “gay marriage.” The petitioners are chess pieces in the hands of a movement bent on fundamentally changing American culture by deconstructing traditional marriage. The Supreme Court has delivered them checkmate.

Songs for the Book of Luke is an album by the church, for the church. The songwriters and musicians on this album all serve in congregations across the country, from New York to St. Louis to Seattle, to Dallas and many places in between. These songs have roots in the Scriptures (all of these songs are inspired by the Book of Luke) and seek, above all else, to glorify God and serve his people.

The God Who Shows Off Broken Seashells

Perhaps the delight of a little girl in broken seashells resembles a God who loves to pick up the fragments of shattered lives and gently put them back together again…

Most people want to be closer to God and experience more fulfilling relationships. Jesus gave us the keys to accomplish this when he taught us that of all God's commands only two are most important: Love God with all your heart and love your neighbors as yoursef. This sounds so easy, but we struggle in this area. That's why Pastor Rick developed the 40 Days of Love Study Kit. This unigue tool will equip you to fulfill the two greatest commandments. And, as you learn to live a love powered life you will grow closer to God and others. You'll become more like Jesus!

How We Made Too Much of Gender

The neuroscience has been helpful, as far as it goes. We can sigh in relief when we discover that those things about our spouse (or sibling or parent) aren’t their own aberrations, but fairly normal behavior for their gender. I own a popular Christian marriage series that has readers laughing at the male species, who can’t multi-task to save his life, who speak 17 words a day (actually studies say 7,000), who have no clue as to their actual emotional state, etc. Then we hit the female version: women who speed-talk nonstop, jump between topics, fixate on minute details, and on and on.

Seven Shifts as Generation Y Becomes Generation Z - Tim Elmore

Ten years ago, Generation Y reported that it was very common for them to get anything they wanted—the new iPhone, Abercrombie and Fitch jeans, a tablet, tattoos or piercings. Today, money is a bit tighter and there’s been a 400% increase in multi-generational households. (Which means people often have to share space and resources.) Slowly, millions of adolescents have shifted into a world that is not about them. Many are forced to think practically and to think ahead. Optimism can become cynicism.

Raising future men and women

There are no generic people. There are men, and there are women. Consequently there are no generic Christian people. There are Christian men and there are Christian women. In Genesis 1-2, Ephesians 5, 1 Peter 3, and Colossians 3, we find clarity about the primary roles of men and women. There are differing ways in which men and women will live out the Christian life. For instance, when giving specific instruction and admonition to men, the Bible usually does so within three key categories: leading, providing and protecting. In other words, biblical masculinity involves a heart that is inclined to obey God within this particular context of leadership, provision and protection. This may take place predominantly as husbands and fathers, but it still should be cultivated, encouraged and instilled in boys as they mature into manhood.

Should More Churches Embrace Tradition?

Tradition isn’t just an interesting piece of history that Christians can learn from, it can be a building block in a mature expression of faith in Christ. Tradition, regardless of which tradition you associate with, offers important practices and theology to help grow our understanding of truth, accountability and the dynamic beauty of the coming Kingdom of God.

God Brings Us Suffering for Others’ Sake

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. (2 Corinthians 1:3–5)

Sing Something Fresh

Is America Becoming Hostile to Christians? Book Review.

Chapter six is entitled, “Can’t Please All the People.” His point is that kindness and relationships can help minimize hostility towards Christians, but it cannot please everyone. Yancey provides the example of InterVarsity losing its status as a campus organization at Vanderbilt University. The group was quite moderate and aimed to show that it was not “homophobic culture warriors.” Nevertheless, the moderate InterVarsity group was dismissed from Vanderbilt in the name of tolerance. Many people will respond to graciousness and kindness, but many will not. Some will find reasons for Christianophobia no matter how well we treat them. And according to Jesus, this should not surprise us (1 John 3:13).

William Lane Craig on Stephen Hawking film "The Theory Of Everything" -- Trailer

In the film The Theory of Everything, Stephen Hawking claims that cosmology is "a religion for intelligent atheists". The question haunts the film as it haunts Hawking's books. In his lecture "Cosmology: A Religion For Atheists?" Dr William Lane Craig examines this claim - critiquing both dialogue from the film, and Prof. Hawking's own publications. Does a beginning to the universe entail a creator? Does Hawking's latest "no boundary" Big Bang model disprove it? What hope is there, in a universe without God, according to the science of physical eschatology? And is philosophy "dead" as Stephen Hawking claims? Coming soon to YouTube. Dr William Lane Craig's Kalam Cosmological Argument is the most widely discussed argument for the existence of God in contemporary western philosophy. He is Research Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and Houston Baptist University. He's published over 40 books and over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is most known online for his lectures and debates with leading atheists and skeptics.
