2 No Apology for Apologetics

This is why Bible study and teaching the Bible for me is such a passion. You see, I was raised in a culture and in a belief-system wherein I was basically told what to believe and I had no reason why I believed these things. When I finally came to the realization that I was a sinner destined for hell and trusted Christ as my personal Savior, one of my very first commitments was that I would never believe ANYTHING again unless I could see it, understand it and be able to explain it in the Bible. Through life I have learned that there is somewhat of a balance there as God, through His sovereignty, has veiled some things that just cannot be understood until we get to heaven (see 1 Corinthians 13:12). But the fact still remains that we need to always be ready to give an answer… we need to be ready to defend our faith. My challenge to each today is that you learn something new from Scripture that pertains to attacks against Christians and/or Christianity and do some study so you can defend and give an answer (apologia) for your position. This is why the folks in Berea were praised, because they were prepared to answer attacks.

5 Tips From the Early Church Fathers

First and foremost as apologists, we must get plugged into a biblical church. All of the early Church fathers and apologists were active in a local body as either a bishop or a presbyter. That’s not to say that we need to become bishops ourselves, but it is absolutely vital that we have a strong Christian family who can both walk beside us and encourage us in our apologetics, as well as hold us accountable if we make a misstep.

Objective Beauty and the Existence of God

In a recent Reasonable Faith podcast , William Lane Craig was asked if it is possible to argue for the existence of God based on objective beauty in such a way that would be similar to one of my favorite arguments — the argument from objective morality. Craig responded by saying that he “hopes so,” and would like to see someone make the argument that God grounds objective aesthetic values. However, he added that he is not sure how such a syllogism would be formulated.

Why God Doesn't Seem to Answer All Our Prayers | Cold Case Christianity

You don’t have to be a Christian long to experience an “unanswered prayer.” Maybe that’s because most of us want “yes” answers. If you’re determined to have God grant your requests, you may want to ask for something that God always  provides. According to the New Testament, you can have confidence that God will always say “yes” to the following three requests:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

You can't get something from nothing...It's as simple as that

You can't get something from nothing...It's as simple as that.  If there were no God, then the history of the entire universe, up until the appearance of living creatures, would be a history of dead matter with no consciousness.  You would not have any thoughts, beliefs, feelings, sensations, free actions, choices, or purposes. There would be simply one physical event after another physical event, behaving according to the laws of physics and chemistry...How then, do you get something totally different- conscious, living, thinking, feeling, believing creatures- from materials that don't have that?  That's getting something from nothing!  And that's the main problem... However...if you begin with an infinite mind, then you can explain how finite minds could come into existence.  That makes sense.  What doesn't make sense- and which many atheistic evolutionists are conceding -is the idea of getting a mind to squirt into existence by starting with brute, dead, mindless matter.

Twelve Reasons Why Atheism Cannot Explain Reality

This worldview gets hit and trampled quickly. The weapons of the faithful are powerful in destroying the walls of opposition. The knowledge of God destroys the lofty arguments that rise high and fall hard. Christ captivates. He is ready to punish every disobedience (2 Cor 10:3–6).

The biomass distribution on Earth

A census of the biomass on Earth is key for understanding the structure and dynamics of the biosphere. However, a global, quantitative view of how the biomass of different taxa compare with one another is still lacking. Here, we assemble the overall biomass composition of the biosphere, establishing a census of the ≈550 gigatons of carbon (Gt C) of biomass distributed among all of the kingdoms of life. We find that the kingdoms of life concentrate at different locations on the planet; plants (≈450 Gt C, the dominant kingdom) are primarily terrestrial, whereas animals (≈2 Gt C) are mainly marine, and bacteria (≈70 Gt C) and archaea (≈7 Gt C) are predominantly located in deep subsurface environments. We show that terrestrial biomass is about two orders of magnitude higher than marine biomass and estimate a total of ≈6 Gt C of marine biota, doubling the previous estimated quantity. Our analysis reveals that the global marine biomass pyramid contains more consumers than producers, thus increasing the scope of previous observations on inverse food pyramids. Finally, we highlight that the mass of humans is an order of magnitude higher than that of all wild mammals combined and report the historical impact of humanity on the global biomass of prominent taxa, including mammals, fish, and plants.

Christian Case Makers: Young People Ought to Be Our Jury | Cold Case Christianity

Young People Are the Most Challenged As a result, young Christians are more likely to be challenged when it comes to their worldview , particularly when the Christian worldview under attack asks them to deny themselves, resist the hedonistic influences of the world, and take the higher, more difficult road. The university experience only exacerbates this challenge. Adults typically start careers and align themselves with like-minded social groups. After a few years, we find ourselves in a place where our worldview is largely unchallenged. Young Christians, on the other hand, enter into a university environment where they are far more likely to be surrounded my differing worldviews and challenged aggressively. While parents are home in the safety of the communities they’ve created for themselves, young people are struggling in communities created by people who largely reject our values. We’re safe while our kids are at risk.

A Superb New Website: Introducing Aquinas.Design | Evolution News

Phillip Johnson, a pioneer in the development of intelligent design science, wrote that Darwinism is as much a philosophical claim as it is a scientific theory. There are genuine and profoundly important scientific questions addressed in the Darwinism/ID debate, but underlying this debate is the Darwinian philosophical assertion — generally implicit but quite real — that nature is an uncreated machine. Atheist materialism is the metaphysical root of Darwinism, just as monotheism and (truncated) Aristotelian hylomorphism is the explicit philosophical root of the Scientific Enlightenment and the implicit root of much of modern science (e.g.,  quantum mechanics ).

Transgender Identity—Wishing Away God’s Design

Third, we should recommit ourselves to training our children. The bodily differences between men and women are real. They speak to differences in our makeup, specifically designed by our Creator. In practical form, we must teach these differences to our children. They must see that being a boy or a girl is a matter of God’s glory. There should be no shame in boys liking boyish things or in girls adopting girlish behaviors. Christians should encourage this kind of awareness. Many parents will find that their children genuinely enjoy being a boy or a girl, a future man or a future woman. We should regularly remind our kids that it was God who made them as they are. We should encourage them to embrace and assume manhood or womanhood.

The Challenges Facing Young Christians

Every other week, from May to August, I have the honor of speaking with students at Summit Worldview Academy . I typically teach on the nature of truth, the reliability of the gospels, and the evidence for God’s existence. The students are eager to learn and have many good questions during the breaks, during our lunch and dinner time together, and at an evening session specifically set aside for questions.  The students usually share a number of stories related to the ways they were already being challenged as young Christians. Many have experienced a season of doubt and are grateful for the training they receive at Summit. Dr. Jeff Myers, the president of Summit Ministries, has assembled an incredible collection of thinkers, teachers and trainers to help prepare students to face challenges and “analyze the various ideas that are currently competing for their hearts and minds.” These young people are eager to prepare themselves for these encounters. Christian students are surrounded by competing worldviews from a very young age. As I speak with the young men and women at Sum

Neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield on Free Will | Evolution News

But, as noted, there is strong scientific evidence to support free will as well. Some of the earliest evidence came from neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield, who was the pioneer in epilepsy surgery in the mid 20th century. Penfield operated on over a thousand epilepsy patients while they were awake (under local anesthesia), and he stimulated their brains with electrodes in order to identify epileptic regions for surgical resection. He carefully recorded their responses to stimulation. In his book Mystery of the Mind ,* Penfield noted:

Pursuing God intellectually: Being honest about our questions

Jesus identified the greatest commandment as loving God with our all of who we are, and Jesus specifically included loving God with our minds. But what does this mean? I suggested that we understand this as pursuing God intellectually in a way that is consonant with other relational pursuits. When we love someone, we want to know things. We are intellectually curious about what makes them tick.

Argument for the Early Dating of Christian Theology and Christian Writings

Two accusations by skeptics regarding the Christian faith are that the miraculous aspects of the life of Jesus were invented late and that the written accounts we now have in the Bible were also written later than the lifetimes of the supposed authors. It is reasonable to conclude that neither of these accusations are true. The theology that Jesus died for our sins and then rose from the dead is present in the Christian community within 4 years and written down within 17 years of the death of Jesus. Starting with two epistles written by Paul we can date the doctrine of the resurrection to very soon after of the crucifixion of Jesus. It is the overwhelming conclusion by ancient historians – even Christian skeptics - that Paul did actually write these letters. 1 st Corinthians was written by Paul around 53 AD, while Galatians was written sometime before 57 AD. The dating of Jesus’s death is debated, but it is either 30 AD or 33 AD. Using Paul’s writings, the logic goes as follows:[1]

Did the Apostle Paul Reject Philosophy?

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

Genesis and ANE Accounts of Creation

They claim there are plenty of similarities between the ANE accounts and that found in Genesis, so there is nothing unique about the Bible and it certainly is not God’s inerrant word. How might we respond to such charges? While the discussion can be rather complex, let me try to offer a brief, introductory discussion on all this.

Episode 082: Pros and Cons of Labels - Christian Research Institute

“A recent trend, which gained traction with a piece released by Planned Parenthood a handful of years ago (“Moving Beyond Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice Labels, You’re ‘Not in Her Shoes’”), is attempting to do just that. There is a growing desire that the terms pro-choice and pro-life be abolished because they do not adequately express feelings about abortion. Most people “just don’t want to be labeled,” proponents claim. They may very well be on to something, but they’re taking things too far…Simply put, labels come with pros and cons. Some labels are associated automatically with stereotypical meanings, which can be exacerbated further by any number of factors that influence individuals — culture, education, loyalties, circumstances, media. When labels are thrown out haphazardly, they oftentimes unfairly corral others into groups according to the audience’s perception… It may be that the call for abolishing the label pro-choice comes from the fact that many identify themselves as personally pro-life, while others label them pro-choice. These individuals play the moral relativism card by reducing moral truth to mere personal preference.

26 Give Your Suitor Some Grace

Before I got married, I was hard on men because I knew the Bible laid out high expectations for biblical manhood. This mentality served me well at weeding out the “bad ones” in the dating world, but held me back from going forward with the “good ones.” My lack of graciousness was my Achilles’ heel — the one place of weakness and vulnerability amidst my strength and pride.

How God Speaks To Us Today - Tim Challies

Statement one: God can speak to people in many different ways and guide them with their cooperation . The Bible is full of stories of God speaking to his people–God speaking to Adam and Eve in the Garden as he walked and talked with them, God speaking to Moses from the burning bush, God speaking to Nebuchadnezzar in a dream. In each case God told people his will and when God told them what he wanted of them, they were able to consciously participate in it, or they were able to reject it. Adam and Eve defied God even though they knew what he demanded of them. Jonah heard from the Lord and ran away. Abraham heard from the Lord and obeyed. All through the Bible we see God speaking and giving guidance and instruction. In all these ways and so many more, God spoke to people and guided them with their cooperation.

Predestination Is Biblical, Beautiful, and Practical

In some churches, it is a word that conjures up images of an angry and capricious God who acts arbitrarily to save some, but consigns most sinners—including deceased infants—to eternal perdition. For many professing Christians, it is the mother of all swear words. Let the pastor breathe it in the presence of the deacon board and he risks firing, fisticuffs or worse. A God who chooses is anti-American, anti-democracy. It bespeaks a long-faced, puritanical religion, a doctrinal novelty invented by a maniacal 16th-century minister whose progeny manufactured a theological “-ism” that has plunged countless souls into a godless eternity. In other churches, it is a cherished word that describes a beloved doctrine, one that bestows comfort and unshakable confidence that not one maverick molecule, not one rebel subatomic particle exists outside of God’s loving providential control—even in the matter of salvation. Want to start a lively conversation? Then utter the word: predestination . Biblical Doctrine Few doctrines in the history of American religion have assembled such a pugilistic resume .

Why Indianapolis Megachurch Members Are Joining God in the ‘Swamp’

Also in 2012, College Park planted Nehemiah Bible Church. It was the next iteration of Kids’ Church, because “kids were aging out at 18 with nowhere to go,” said Kids’ Church then-pastor Cory Johnson. So College Park stopped the Kids’ Church to plant Nehemiah, ordaining Johnson to keep him in the neighborhood. (It’s practically home for Johnson; he grew up 18 blocks north of Brookside. Because he’s got both the history and also the gift of preaching, he’s effective where a traditional College Park pastor couldn’t be, Shaw said.)

Bethel Church responds to deadly California wildfires - Premier

The Taylor Fam evacuated our home in Redding on Thursday night to prepare for living in tight quarters for a long period of time without answers. All too familiar - We took what necessities we couldn't live without and fled at midnight, driving through the night and finally found a hotel where we crashed for a few hours that morning. Now we're staying in my Mom's little cottage and letting it all sit in - I've been working remotely to ensure that our teams back home are okay and that Bethel Music and Bethel Media are stable during this time. Our Bethel leadership team is scattered all over the state, but doing an incredible job to catalyze relief efforts and make sure our employees and their families are taken care of during this time of crisis - We've been through many trials and tribulations together and one thing I'm certain of: VICTORY. If God be for us, who can be against us! - The kids..well, they just think this is a fun vacation :) Through it all, the knowns and the unknowns, we are blessed beyond measure

I am writing for the liberation of teenagers. I write to challenge teenagers to “live as people who are free” (1 Peter 2:16). Be wise and strong and free from the slavery of culture-conformity. To put it another way, I am calling teenagers to a radical, wartime lifestyle.

Did Moses Author the Pentateuch?

Though modern skeptics challenge that Moses wrote the books (some even doubt he existed), there is plenty of evidence throughout the Bible, as well as external texts, to give us confidence that he did. Old Testament and New Testament references clearly and consistently testify to Mosaic authorship, authority, and influence.

45 His Stubborn Joy Brought Slavery Down: William Wilberforce (1759–1833)

The battle consumed almost forty-six years of his life (from 1787 to 1833). The defeats and setbacks along the way would have caused the ordinary politician to embrace a more popular cause. Though he never lost a parliamentary election from age twenty-one to seventy-four, the cause of abolishing the slave trade was defeated eleven times before its passage in 1807. And the battle for abolishing slavery itself did not gain the decisive victory until three days before he died in 1833. What were the roots of this man’s endurance in the cause of public righteousness?

46 When Worship Lyrics Miss the Mark

It’s Sunday night, after a day of worship with the people of God. And musical worship is such an important part of our embodied life together. But I don’t think we’ve ever looked at the lyrics of a contemporary worship song in a question. We do today. “Hello, Pastor John! My name is Samuel, a young minister through music. My church’s worship team struggles with a new worship song — ‘What A Beautiful Name’ — a widely acclaimed song because of its musical orchestration and its reflection on God’s glory and the kingship of Christ. However, my worship team finds the lyrics of the second verse questionable: ‘You didn’t want heaven without us, so, Jesus, you brought heaven down.’ Our question is, Does saying, ‘You didn’t want heaven without us’ imply a man-centered gospel? The statement isn’t necessarily false, but the implications could be skewed. That’s our fear. Additionally, the word ‘so’ is used afterwards, implying that the following statement of ‘bringing heaven down’ was founded upon the first statement of not wanting heaven without us. Much like the word ‘therefore,’ ‘so’ implies heaven was brought down in response to God not wanting heaven without us.

The First Question to Ask of an Ancient Holy Book: Is It Ancient? | Cold Case Christianity

The test of antiquity was incredibly important to me as a skeptic examining the claims of scripture for the first time. As I became interested in Christianity, my Mormon family encouraged me to examine Mormonism as well. I read the entire Book of Mormon before I completed the Old and New Testament. I wanted to determine the “antiquity” of the Gospels and the Book of Mormon before I could examine the question of “divinity”. I needed to know if the New Testament gospels were written early enough to have been written by eyewitnesses who were actually present to observe what was recorded in these accounts. Similarly, I needed to know if the Book of Mormon was an accurate account of the history of the American continent from 600BC to 400AD (as it claims). My first investigation was centered on the foundational question: Are these ancient holy books truly ancient?
