Were Some Books Left Out of the Bible?

Were there some books either intentionally or unintentionally left out of the Bible? What about other so-called "Gospels"? Sean briefly answers these questions.

Desiring God

The world sells a sinful, cheap joy at the buyer’s expense. God dispenses fullness of joy at the expense of his own Son, so that you may be eternally happy in him.

Greatness, Humility, Servanthood

Humility rests in the hands of God and runs with his strength.

Desiring God for God

Green Mount Cemetery is a 174-year-old, 60-acre plot of land in downtown Baltimore, a fortress for the dead, quarantined from the bustling city by a thick stone wall. Through a narrow stone arch, the street noise fades to silence and time slows to a stop. Acres of stone ornaments rise and fall along the surface of the rolling hills.

Case Making Apps Every Christian Should Have on Their Phone or Tablet | Cold Case Christianity

If you’ve got a young person in your life (either a child, grandchild, niece or nephew), you’ve probably already discovered the vast majority of his or her internet consumption involves a handheld device (a smart phone or tablet). If you’re a web designer you already know the trajectory of this trend and the need to make everything accessible from a mobile platform. Phone and tablet apps are important contributors in this new internet frontier. Several Christian apologetics ministries now have mobile apps to deliver their content and I’ve downloaded and used all of them at one time or another. I like to read everyone, even brothers and sisters who disagree with one another. For this reason, I don’t limit myself to people who ascribe to a particular age of the earth or eschatological understanding. I’ll give you a peak of what’s on my phone, based on the criteria that’s important to me. First and foremost, I’ve limited my list to free apps. If you really expect to reach the most important apologetics target audience (young people), your phone app better be free. Secondly, I am looking for apps that are content rich.

Why Does God Allow Evil? Author Interview from Groundbreaking Book

JONES : The biggest lack in the typical discussion regarding “why does God allow evil?” is a focus on the eternal. I’ve read a lot of books on the subject and most of them barely nod at eternity playing a part in our answering the question. But C.S. Lewis was right: “Scripture and tradition habitually put the joys of heaven into the scale against the sufferings of earth, and no solution of the problem of pain that does not do so can be called a Christian one.” But it is much more than answering the problem of evil,a failure to understand the glory that awaits the Christian for eternity hurts Christians in many other ways. That’s why I spend three chapters on eternity in my book. We need to do Colossians 3:1-4!

The Two-Minute Apologetics Toolbox, Episode 5, Part 2

This is Part 2 of 3 of our interview with New Testament scholar, historian, and leading expert on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Dr. Michael Licona. Dr. Licona talks about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and explains that it stands up quite well when examined by the Historical Method. That Jesus actually rose from the dead is the most plausible explanation for the facts that the overwhelming majority of historians accept as true from the gospel accounts.

After 50 Years in a Wheelchair, I Still Walk With Jesus

I served on the National Council on Disability, which authored the initial draft of the ADA. Our second director, Paul Hearne, was a Jewish man who had osteogenesis imperfecta. We were all together at the White House on the day that President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA into law. Afterward, Paul proposed a toast. He said, in so many words, “This will mean a mandate of greater access into areas of employment, in public accommodations, and transportation. It means employers will now hire qualified individuals with disabilities, it means that restaurants will have ramps, it means that buses eventually will have mechanical lifts.” And then he said, “But this law is not going to change the employer’s heart, and this law is not going to change the heart of the maître d’ at the restaurant, and this law will not change the heart of the bus driver.” He raised his glass and he said, “Here’s to changed hearts.”

All’s Not Fair When Love Is War: Extending Grace in Conflict

Our most familiar hymn declares how amazing it is (and for good reason). Although the Old Testament only contains several sightings of the word, the New Testament explodes with it. God’s grace fills Christ (John 1:14), appears in his person and work (Titus 2:11–14), brands the gospel (Acts 20:24), overwhelms sin (Romans 5:20), founds God’s promises to us (Romans 4:16), transforms weakness into strength (2 Corinthians 12:9), defines God’s throne (Hebrews 4:16), and characterizes God’s Spirit (Hebrews 10:29). God is the God of all grace (1 Peter 5:10).

Forensic Faith 101: Do you have an accidental or evidential faith?

Why am I a Christian and not a Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist? If I answer “because that is what I grew up with,” or “because I had an experience,” or “because I just feel that it is true” then I have an accidental faith. The problem with an accidental faith is that it is based on me and my feelings, it cannot hold up to questions that require evidence, and in fact people from every other belief system can give one of those same answers. In today’s culture, especially in public education, proving your position (whether religious or not) is more important than ever, and if you are not able to do so your view is quickly disregarded and even worse deemed false.

Every Easter Sermon Is Built on the Reliability of the Gospel Eyewitnesses | Cold Case Christianity

If we can’t trust the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus was accurately described by the eyewitnesses, we can’t trust the Old Testament prophecies were truly fulfilled. If the gospels are elaborate fictions crafted with prophecy in mind, the alleged fulfillment of the Old Testament predictions is meaningless. The reliability of the gospels (point two) is required if we hope to find Kevin’s first point persuasive. In addition, if we can’t trust the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus was accurately described by eyewitnesses, we can’t trust our personal experiences are grounded in truth rather than emotion. If the Gospels are inspiring fictions misrepresenting Jesus (like, for example, the Book of Mormon), we have no reason to believe our transformation is anything other than our own individual effort or emotional evaluation. The reliability of the gospels (point two) is required if we hope to find Kevin’s third point persuasive.

Tools for Inquiry: Logic and Observation

I was in a friendly mini-debate at a California college when the evolutionist interrupted me: “But creation can’t be scientific. Science deals only with things you can see and touch. Take energy, for example . . . .” Then he stopped. “Whoops! Made a mistake, didn’t I?” I hastened to agree. He, his students, and I all knew that there are forms of energy, like gravity, that you can’t see or touch or put in a bottle. Yet you know “gravity” is there (whatever it is!) because you can see the effects it has on matter. Similarly, God is a Spirit and can’t be seen—but you can see His effects on matter. Even the Bible tells us that “the invisible things of God are clearly seen in all the things that have been made” ( Rom. 1:20 ).

3 Quick Reflections on Apologetics Worldwide

Apologetics is growing internationally. Today I got an email from a minister in Ethiopia who is starting apologetics training in his country through the local church and national media. In our Biola M.A. Christian Apologetics program , we have students from New Zealand , Hong Kong, Netherlands, Australia, Latin America, and more. A few years ago, when I spoke in Canada, apologetics seemed to be a new venture, and there were little resources “on the ground.” But now there are multiple flourishing apologetics ministries , speakers , and bloggers from Canada who are equipping the church from within.

Teaching Apologetics to the Next Generation

Before becoming a graduate professor of apologetics last year, I spent a decade teaching apologetics full time to high school students at a Christian school in Southern California. In fact, I still teach one high school Bible class simply because I love it ! I also have the privilege of speaking to thousands of young people each year on all sorts of apologetics-related subjects. There are some lessons I have learned—many the hard way—about how to teach apologetics to young people. I trust these will be helpful and encouraging as you aim to equip and challenge the next generation.

Why Biologists Tend to Make Bad Ethicists - Christian Research Institute

Let’s now address Myers’s confusion of terms. In his rebuttal to Klusendorf, Myers asserts that there “is no such thing” as unborn women. This is a pretty significant mistake for at least two reasons. First, even though the sexual organs haven’t yet developed, they have either the XX chromosomes or XY chromosomes. This means that they are still female or male, even if we can’t tell what they are yet. Second, you can call something a male or female without attributing personhood to it. Dogs and cats are male or female, yet they are not persons. He goes on to say that calling an unborn entity a “woman” is like looking at a tree and calling it an unbuilt house, or calling a cow an uncooked hamburger. Myers made the same mistake in his article against Hawkins, in which he says that the unborn organism has a life of development ahead of it, so it is not a whole organism. To Myers, calling the zygote a whole organism is like calling an iron ingot a car.

37
Forensic Faith

Believers are commanded in 1 Peter 3:15 to always be ready to “to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” Being able to provide such a defense requires the believer to have a practical understanding of the faith in which they have placed their hope. Part of this effort involves the practice of apologetics. Moreover, developing a good apologetic for the faith includes utilizing the vast amount of evidence available in support of the faith. Having valuable tools on hand which outline in a helpful manner this fount of evidence is also essential.

Why Do So Many Christians Dismiss Apologetics?

I love apologetics. It’s fun to teach apologetics, discuss apologetics, and offer reasons for what I believe to non-Christians who ask. Yet, quite clearly, not all Christians share my enthusiasm. Why not? Below are five common reasons why many Christians dismiss apologetics (thanks to my Twitter friends, acknowledged below).

How Do You Motivate People to Care about Apologetics? Part 2

Churches need to be reminded of why they are here. Evangelism and apologetics, which is the handmaiden to evangelism, are not optional activities. They are at the very core of our mission, which is to reach our world with the gospel. That’s why Jesus spelled it out so clearly: to go into all the world (including next door or down the hallway) to reach everyone we can for him (Matthew 20:18-20). This Great Commission wasn’t one choice among many options. It’s what we’re here to do.

Interview with Carl Trueman on Ulrich Zwingli - Westminster Theological Seminary

Trueman: Ulrich Zwingli was the first great reformer of the city of Zürich in Switzerland. He was born on New Year’s Day in 1484, just a few weeks after Martin Luther. So they were the same age, but in some ways, they came from different worlds. Luther was a medieval man; he trained in a medieval university, medieval curriculum, as a monk, medieval calling. Zwingli was a humanist. He grew up under the tutelage of those who are profoundly influenced by humanism, and specifically by Erasmus. He became a Catholic priest and from 1518 onwards he was a minister in Zürich, where he came to the conviction that the city as a whole, public city, city life, as well as church life, needed to be reformed in accordance with the word of God. His move to Reformation was, I think, more existential than Luther’s. We don’t hear in Zwingli about this great wrestling with his personal sin; but he came to a conviction that life as a whole was to be regulated by the Word of God.

Passive Christianity Is Dead Christianity

Second, Jesus calls us to believe (Mark 1:15; 9:23). For Jesus, believing is never mere intellectual assent to a creed. It always implies and requires action. James’s statement that faith without works is dead is backed up by the entire Bible. If you believe God, you will do what he says (Matthew 7:21; John 14:15).
