Christians React to Suicide of Linkin Park Frontman Chester Bennington

"If you haven't heard the news, Linkin Park's lead singer, Chester Bennington, committed suicide. It's unclear whether or not he was Christian, but this is all a part of God's plan regardless. Growing up, Linkin Park was one of my favorite bands, and it's devastating to hear this news...," a user noted as Upliftance  commented. The individual later edited the post to clarify that: "I misspoke, suicide shouldn't be labelled as part God's plan. No one should abuse their free will so much to the point of suicide that is definitely not what God wants."

Does God Predestine Sin?

God brought the greatest good the world has ever known out of the most horrifying sin the world has ever seen. And it was his plan from before creation.

Desiring God for God

Green Mount Cemetery is a 174-year-old, 60-acre plot of land in downtown Baltimore, a fortress for the dead, quarantined from the bustling city by a thick stone wall. Through a narrow stone arch, the street noise fades to silence and time slows to a stop. Acres of stone ornaments rise and fall along the surface of the rolling hills.

Case Making Apps Every Christian Should Have on Their Phone or Tablet | Cold Case Christianity

If you’ve got a young person in your life (either a child, grandchild, niece or nephew), you’ve probably already discovered the vast majority of his or her internet consumption involves a handheld device (a smart phone or tablet). If you’re a web designer you already know the trajectory of this trend and the need to make everything accessible from a mobile platform. Phone and tablet apps are important contributors in this new internet frontier. Several Christian apologetics ministries now have mobile apps to deliver their content and I’ve downloaded and used all of them at one time or another. I like to read everyone, even brothers and sisters who disagree with one another. For this reason, I don’t limit myself to people who ascribe to a particular age of the earth or eschatological understanding. I’ll give you a peak of what’s on my phone, based on the criteria that’s important to me. First and foremost, I’ve limited my list to free apps. If you really expect to reach the most important apologetics target audience (young people), your phone app better be free. Secondly, I am looking for apps that are content rich.

Why Does God Allow Evil? Author Interview from Groundbreaking Book

JONES : The biggest lack in the typical discussion regarding “why does God allow evil?” is a focus on the eternal. I’ve read a lot of books on the subject and most of them barely nod at eternity playing a part in our answering the question. But C.S. Lewis was right: “Scripture and tradition habitually put the joys of heaven into the scale against the sufferings of earth, and no solution of the problem of pain that does not do so can be called a Christian one.” But it is much more than answering the problem of evil,a failure to understand the glory that awaits the Christian for eternity hurts Christians in many other ways. That’s why I spend three chapters on eternity in my book. We need to do Colossians 3:1-4!

The Two-Minute Apologetics Toolbox, Episode 5, Part 2

This is Part 2 of 3 of our interview with New Testament scholar, historian, and leading expert on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Dr. Michael Licona. Dr. Licona talks about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and explains that it stands up quite well when examined by the Historical Method. That Jesus actually rose from the dead is the most plausible explanation for the facts that the overwhelming majority of historians accept as true from the gospel accounts.

Why Biologists Tend to Make Bad Ethicists - Christian Research Institute

Let’s now address Myers’s confusion of terms. In his rebuttal to Klusendorf, Myers asserts that there “is no such thing” as unborn women. This is a pretty significant mistake for at least two reasons. First, even though the sexual organs haven’t yet developed, they have either the XX chromosomes or XY chromosomes. This means that they are still female or male, even if we can’t tell what they are yet. Second, you can call something a male or female without attributing personhood to it. Dogs and cats are male or female, yet they are not persons. He goes on to say that calling an unborn entity a “woman” is like looking at a tree and calling it an unbuilt house, or calling a cow an uncooked hamburger. Myers made the same mistake in his article against Hawkins, in which he says that the unborn organism has a life of development ahead of it, so it is not a whole organism. To Myers, calling the zygote a whole organism is like calling an iron ingot a car.

Forensic Faith

Believers are commanded in 1 Peter 3:15 to always be ready to “to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” Being able to provide such a defense requires the believer to have a practical understanding of the faith in which they have placed their hope. Part of this effort involves the practice of apologetics. Moreover, developing a good apologetic for the faith includes utilizing the vast amount of evidence available in support of the faith. Having valuable tools on hand which outline in a helpful manner this fount of evidence is also essential.

Why Do So Many Christians Dismiss Apologetics?

I love apologetics. It’s fun to teach apologetics, discuss apologetics, and offer reasons for what I believe to non-Christians who ask. Yet, quite clearly, not all Christians share my enthusiasm. Why not? Below are five common reasons why many Christians dismiss apologetics (thanks to my Twitter friends, acknowledged below).

What Do Greek Scholars Think of the Watchtower Society's New World Translation of the Bible?

Clearly this gives only a biased one sided negative point of view. There are also many scholars who have found it not such a bad translation at all. You best compare it with the original languages (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) and yiu shall find out it has given a very contemporary translation for several languages: a.o. Dutch, English, French and German. (For other languages I do not know enough those other languages, but the Italian and Spanish fragments I came in contact with seemed also very good.)

How Do You Motivate People to Care about Apologetics? Part 2

Churches need to be reminded of why they are here. Evangelism and apologetics, which is the handmaiden to evangelism, are not optional activities. They are at the very core of our mission, which is to reach our world with the gospel. That’s why Jesus spelled it out so clearly: to go into all the world (including next door or down the hallway) to reach everyone we can for him (Matthew 20:18-20). This Great Commission wasn’t one choice among many options. It’s what we’re here to do.

The Prayers You Need Most Are Not Your Own

As if that were not grace enough, the Holy Spirit is also present, on speakerphone, as it were. He’s calling directly from our hearts, where he not only knows our every need more intimately than do we ourselves, but he also gazes into the depths of the Father’s will with complete clarity. Since all of his requests are perfectly in line with that will, and everything for which he asks echoes the requests of the beloved Son, his continual requests are continually granted.

How God Sent His Word to An Iraqi Interpreter

And sure enough, God began profoundly changing my father’s heart. My family noticed a huge difference when he returned from prison. He became a hard worker, less selfish and an overall happier man who always had a smile on his face. As an example, one week after his release, my father and I went shopping for clothes. We ran into a man wearing tattered clothing who was obviously homeless. My father had compassion for this man and, stripping down to his underwear, gave away the clothes he was wearing. He said, “He needs these clothes more than I do.” I stood in shock because of his generosity. I knew then that my father’s life had been forever changed.

Let’s compare the qualitative likelihood of natural geological processes producing a sustained nuclear reaction to the qualitative likelihood of these processes producing, say, an adjustable wrench. Interview with Carl Trueman on Ulrich Zwingli - Westminster Theological Seminary

Trueman: Ulrich Zwingli was the first great reformer of the city of Zürich in Switzerland. He was born on New Year’s Day in 1484, just a few weeks after Martin Luther. So they were the same age, but in some ways, they came from different worlds. Luther was a medieval man; he trained in a medieval university, medieval curriculum, as a monk, medieval calling. Zwingli was a humanist. He grew up under the tutelage of those who are profoundly influenced by humanism, and specifically by Erasmus. He became a Catholic priest and from 1518 onwards he was a minister in Zürich, where he came to the conviction that the city as a whole, public city, city life, as well as church life, needed to be reformed in accordance with the word of God. His move to Reformation was, I think, more existential than Luther’s. We don’t hear in Zwingli about this great wrestling with his personal sin; but he came to a conviction that life as a whole was to be regulated by the Word of God.

'A Ghost Story' Is a Haunting Ode to the Privilege of Witness

Lowery seems to have taken this philosophy to heart in his film. Again and again, he lingers on activities and events long after another director might have cut away. In the film’s most buzzed-about scene, the camera holds steady on Mara as her sorrow-stricken character devours nearly an entire pie in one go. The shot lasts for minutes on end, and the effect is hypnotic. It asks us to dwell with M in her desolation, not permitting us to skate over the surface of these feelings or to skip ahead once we’ve “gotten the point.” We must bear witness to the full measure of her grief, feel its rhythms.

44
The Key to the Christian's Joy

In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul speaks about joy and about the Christian’s duty to rejoice over and over again. For example, he writes, “Rejoice in the Lord always” (4:4a). This is one of those biblical imperatives, and it leaves no room for not rejoicing, for Paul says Christians are to rejoice always—not sometimes, periodically, or occasionally. He then adds, “Again I will say, Rejoice” (v. 4b). Paul wrote this epistle from prison, and in it he addresses very somber matters, such as the possibility that he will be martyred, poured out as a sacrifice (2:17). Yet he tells the Philippian believers that they should rejoice despite his circumstances.

After 50 Years in a Wheelchair, I Still Walk With Jesus

I served on the National Council on Disability, which authored the initial draft of the ADA. Our second director, Paul Hearne, was a Jewish man who had osteogenesis imperfecta. We were all together at the White House on the day that President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA into law. Afterward, Paul proposed a toast. He said, in so many words, “This will mean a mandate of greater access into areas of employment, in public accommodations, and transportation. It means employers will now hire qualified individuals with disabilities, it means that restaurants will have ramps, it means that buses eventually will have mechanical lifts.” And then he said, “But this law is not going to change the employer’s heart, and this law is not going to change the heart of the maître d’ at the restaurant, and this law will not change the heart of the bus driver.” He raised his glass and he said, “Here’s to changed hearts.”

46
Passive Christianity Is Dead Christianity

Second, Jesus calls us to believe (Mark 1:15; 9:23). For Jesus, believing is never mere intellectual assent to a creed. It always implies and requires action. James’s statement that faith without works is dead is backed up by the entire Bible. If you believe God, you will do what he says (Matthew 7:21; John 14:15).
