J Warner Wallace explains why he wrote Cold-Case Christianity

Switch to mobile friendly version J Warner Wallace explains why he wrote Cold-Case Christianity Greg’s note: Cold-Case Christianity is (at the time of this writing) still on sale at Amazon for $1.99, but will expire soon, as will the special pre-order price of only $7.55 for his follow-up book, God’s Crime Scene (review coming soon). If you already own a copy of Cold-Case, at this low price, please consider gifting one for a friend or family member. Myself and others a have hailed Cold-Case as one of the best introductory to Christian Apologetics ever written. I highly recommend it for those new to Christian Apologetics and the seasoned apologist as well! ORDER YOUR COPY (or a copy for a friend) HERE >>> Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels by J Warner Wallace only $1.99! I wrote Cold-Case Christianity because the historic truth claims of Christianity are under attack from every direction. If ever there was a time to study the case for the eyewitness reliability of the gospels, the time is now: Anti-Christian Books Are Increasingly Influential: Books like Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, Christopher Hitchens' God is Not Great, Sam Harris' Letter To A Christian Nation, and Bart Ehrman's Forged: Writing in the Name of God - Why the Bible's Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are have influenced millions of readers and challenged the essential truth claims of the gospel accounts.

She’s Having a Fetus

I’m pregnant. At what point in my pregnancy is it called a baby? Women have different feelings about when to call it a baby. For some women, it is a baby from the first moment the pregnancy is confirmed or even suspected. For other women, the pregnancy doesn’t become a baby until much later. What’s most important is how the woman feels about it. Most medical authorities, including Planned Parenthood, agree that it becomes a baby after birth when it takes its first breath. But we value women’s differing feelings about when to use the words embryo, fetus, or baby.

3 Common Traits of Youth Who Don't Leave the Church

As a youth pastor, I can’t do all this. All this equipping that I’m talking about is utterly beyond my limited capabilities. It is impossible for me to bring conversion, of course, but it is also impossible for me to have an equipping ministry that sends out vibrant churchmen and churchwomen if my ministry is not being reinforced tenfold in the students’ homes. The common thread that binds together almost every ministry-minded 20-something that I know is abundantly clear: a home where the gospel was not peripheral but absolutely central. The 20-somethings who are serving, leading, and driving the ministries at our church were kids whose parents made them go to church. They are kids whose parents punished them and held them accountable when they were rebellious. They are kids whose parents read the Bible around the dinner table every night. And they are kids whose parents were tough but who ultimately operated from a framework of grace that held up the cross of Jesus as the basis for peace with God and forgiveness toward one another.

Dr. Steiner-Adair is especially concerned about parental failure to pay full attention to their children “at critical times of the day, like when taking children to and from school. This should be a cell-free zone for everyone — no Bluetooth for parents or devices for the kids. The pickup from school is a very important transitional time for kids, a time for them to download their day. Parents shouldn’t be saying, ‘Wait a minute, I have to finish this call.’  ”

Mitch McConnell Pushes Vote to Fund Planned Parenthood

What we just saw a moment ago is unprecedented in the annals of Senate history. It consisted of the majority leader and the minority leader denying members the ability to have votes on their amendments and indeed the ability even to have a roll call vote. The denial of a second, as you just saw a moment ago, which was aggressively whipped by the majority, is an extraordinary measure designed to gag Senators and enforce the will of the McConnell-Reid leadership team. It saddens me as a Republican to see Republican leadership lead the effort to kill an amendment that would have prevented lifting sanctions on Iran unless and until Iran recognizes Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and unless and until Iran releases American hostages. Make no mistake – granting a sufficient second for a roll call vote is done customarily in the United States Senate. Denying it is extraordinary, and it is done as a consequence of the majority leader Mitch McConnell being afraid for his members to be on record on this issue. We then, subsequently, saw Senator Mike Lee from Utah bring up his amendment to defund Planned Parenthood.

3 Occupational Hazards for Pastors

Christian leaders face additional temptations, too. If we serve a large, prosperous church, we may become greedy. If our church has low expectations, we may become lazy. If our peers outdo us, we may become envious. And pastors are prone to lust. Shortly before I was ordained, a pastor in his 60s with an impressive voice and appearance pulled me aside for a blunt warning: “There is a kind of woman who likes to tempt a pastor and seduce him if she can. Stay away from her.” The warning startled me. It also seemed a bit vain or sexist, since men try to seduce women too. But he spoke with such conviction that it stuck. His warning aligns with Proverbs 5 and needs to be heard today.

Why We Don’t Lose Heart

Paul can’t see the way he used to (and there were no glasses). He can’t hear the way he used to (and there were no hearing aids). He doesn’t recover from beatings the way he used to (and there were no antibiotics). His strength, walking from town to town, doesn’t hold up the way it used to. He sees the wrinkles in his face and neck. His memory is not as good. And he admits that this is a threat to his faith and joy and courage.

Can hipster Christianity save churches from decline?

Many don’t want the church to be like a sceney bar or a stylish boutique. They want the church to be the church: an institution that embraces awkward people, confronts sin, transforms lives, subverts the sovereignty of self, serves others and provides meaning more substantial than the ephemera of fickle fads.

Jihad, Jizya, and Just War Theory - Christian Research Institute

The Qur’an and other Muslim sources contain both peaceful and violent passages. Muslims in the West (as well as politicians and the media) generally emphasize Muhammad’s peaceful teachings, while jihadists emphasize his more violent and radical commands. Although these “two faces” of Islam may seem opposed to one another, a careful examination shows that peace and violence are separate stages of a larger Islamic program, the ultimate goal of which is the violent subjugation of non-Muslims. According to the Qur’an and the example set by Muhammad, Muslims are to adapt their message and tactics to their status in society. When Muslims are completely outnumbered and can’t possibly win a battle against non-Muslims, they are commanded to promote tolerance as a means of protecting the Muslim community. When their numbers grow sufficient for military action, Muslims are told to defend themselves, through terrorism if necessary, from both persecution and criticism. If Muslims come to dominate a society, they are ordered to subjugate the non-Muslim population actively. Because the requirements and goals of jihad are at odds with the most basic constraints of just war theory, Islam cannot be reformed without abandoning adherence to Muhammad’s commands.

How to Raise Boys Who Read

I'm a homeschooler in ninth grade.  I've been reading the Journal (and commenting) for a couple of years now.  I love video games, but I also love reading the Journal.  I would suggest that the body of evidence doesn't seem to defend the author's suppositions yet.  My parents have encouraged us to find what we love to read.  My taste runs to non-fiction, but my younger brother's taste runs to science fiction.  We both scored in high school for reading comprehension in fifth grade, but he has definitively beaten me on math scores (so far, look out, I'm coming for you bro)...

3 Ways to Answer Your Christian-Critical Friends

Then, of course, he gets to know this woman’s family and whole circle. Could you not see that the very house she lives in is one that he ought never to have entered? The whole place reeks of that deadly odor. The very gardener, though he has only been there five years, is beginning to acquire it. Even guests, after a week-end visit, carry some of the smell away with them. The dog and the cat are tainted with it. And a house full of the impenetrable mystery. We are certain (it is a matter of first principles) that each member of the family must in some way be making capital out of the others—but we can’t find out how. They guard as jealously as the Enemy Himself the secret of what really lies behind this pretense of disinterested love. The whole house and garden is one vast obscenity. It bears a sickening resemblance to the description one human writer made of Heaven; “the regions where there is only life and therefore all that is not music is silence.”

The funeral I most dreaded

For 32 years of our marriage, I dreaded this terrible task because he was not a believer. He wanted no part of Christ or his gospel. We prayed for him, witnessed to him, sent others to talk to him, and five years ago even took him to Manaus, Brazil to go fishing for tucunaré (peacock bass), but with the real intention of sharing Christ on the entire trip. We colluded, cooperated and conspired for his soul.

The Calvary Option?

R od Dreher has been creating quite a helpful and productive stir with his arguments in favor of the “Benedict Option” as a way for the church to think about its mission in a world where Christianity is thrust to the despised cultural margins.  I am not sure where I stand on all of the details—some seem yet to be worked out—but he is surely highlighting the fact that in America things are changing rapidly and that Christians need to realize that. Much of what he says resonates with the notion of church as exile community, with which I have deep sympathy.  Yet part of me wonders if we need a new (or perhaps “new old”) option at all.

Is “Animal Rights” a Biblical Concern? - Christian Research Institute

During the past forty years, radical animal rights activists have elevated the value of animals to the moral equivalency of humans. They uncompromisingly insist that medical research on live animals, factory farming, and other practices that cause animals intense suffering and death should be legally forbidden. Christians, on the other hand, generally agree that God created animals primarily for human consumption, commercial benefits, and entertainment. As such, they believe humans are free to use animals in practically any manner we choose with little or no concern for their welfare. While the ranks of radical animal rights activists escalate, the church remains largely indifferent (or ignorant of) the pain and suffering of both wild and domesticated animals. Is the general Christian position God- honoring, or is the modern animal rights movement more on track with biblical revelation? Is promoting animal rights a legitimate and just cause? The Bible answers these questions. It reveals that God enjoys and watches over the animals He created, and they have value to Him independent of their benefits to humanity.

WORLD | A lesson in pro-life apologetics | Warren Cole Smith | July 23, 2015

Let’s talk about how you answer some of the tough questions. What’s your position on rape, incest, or the life of the mother? Two types of people are going to bring up rape: The inquirer and the crusader. The inquirer wants an honest answer. She has heard a case for the pro-life view. She’s persuaded by it, but she’s just having trouble worrying about what would happen to a friend of hers that was raped, and emotionally, she just is struggling with this idea of saying you’ve got to continue the pregnancy. The crusader, on the other hand, does not want an honest answer. He just wants to make you look bad. How can you as a pro-lifer who claim to be compassionate and caring about a woman force her to carry a child that will always remind her of what she went through.

A Ministry of the Mundane

The way of Jesus is not just active ministry. It’s time away with the Father. It’s not just crisis and confrontation; it’s the ordinary, mundane, and common. As much as we need to plan the next big event, we need to experience routines, and rest and renewal. At times, this might mean a sabbatical or time away with the family. Often it’s simply structuring our lives to include moments that are not big or consequential: breakfast with friends, a few hours to read and grow, or pursuing a life-giving hobby. I’m reminded of Thomas Carlyle’s statement that silence is “the element in which great things fashion themselves together.”

35
Ligonier Ministries

The doctrine of definite atonement states that in the death of Jesus Christ, the triune God intended to achieve the redemption of every person given to the Son by the Father in eternity past, and to apply the accomplishments of His sacrifice to each of them by the Spirit. In a nutshell: the death of Christ was intended to win the salvation of God’s people alone, and not only was it intended to do so, but it actually achieved it as well. Jesus will be true to His name: “He will save his people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21). The doctrine is theologically rich, but it is also immensely practical, especially in relation to the church.

Sola Scriptura or Sola Cardia?

Lastly, everyone agrees that traditions of men should not be binding on the Church. However, Apostolic Tradition is binding. This is why Paul says for the Church to hold fast to the traditions that the Apostles themselves delivered to us. The Scriptures themselves are part of that Apostolic tradition. They were written by churchmen for the Church and are not independent from the Church. They are inspired, to be sure. But let us not take one passage (2 Tim 3:16) out of context. It does not talk about the Scriptures themselves having authority. It says that they are “profitable”. However, it is the Chruch who is described as being the “pillar and ground of truth”. The Scriptures as read by the Church are authoritative, and only in that context are they authoritative. They are not authoritative when read in the context of the Westminster confession. The Protestant confessions and verbose, clumsy and go way further than any of the ancient creeds. That phrase from the Westminster Confession is a classic example of an overreaching Protestant confessions (which actually casts doubt on Sola Scriptura by its very existence.

Don't panic. (Or, why some verses get pulled from the Bible)

That’s where the translations come in. Translators look at what manuscripts (copies of copies of copies) we have today and try to discern which ones are closest to what would have been the original wording. Every once in a while, the translators will say, “Wait a minute—this verse isn’t in the most reliable documents. How’d that get in there?” They take those words, phrases, and verses out of the main text body, but usually give you a footnote explaining why.

Gospel Differences & Compositional Textbooks

Training in rhetoric was part of the educational process for aspiring authors in antiquity. That process included work using compositional textbooks, also referred to as rhetorical handbooks. Exercises in these trained the student to alter texts in the interest of paraphrasing. Not surprisingly, when reading ancient texts, including the Gospels, we observe their authors altering their source texts as trained. This practice resulted in differences in the way a story was reported. The differences are minor but of interest.

The Myth of the Media’s Anti-Christian Agenda

Subtle, that's what the devil is. We threw our TV out for about 12 years back in the 80's and when we decided to allow it back into our home, we were shocked. Every show had some little jab or innuendo that poked fun at God or Christians. We would sit and wait for it and analyze the delivery. The way it interpreted the plot and made the whole show come together as a treatise against our culture. It was always there. We have become dull and senseless. God deserves better. As for the news outlets, I watch and listen to them all to see what they have to say. Most of it is delivered to get the viewer to agree with the editors point of view. The very best commentary I remember was delivered by David Brinkley whose last assignment was to cover the second election of William Jefferson Clinton. He said "Great, four more years of this BS". That was his parting shot to an industry that muzzled him throughout his career.

Apologetics Conference August 1-2

We’re entering a new era in Church history. The culture we find ourselves in is becoming noticeably less accepting of Christian teachings and values. Our youth are ill equipped to counter the barrage of worldly criticism. Unaware that the evidence is on their side, they are falling away. Parents, teachers and even pastors are hard pressed to account for the hope they have in Christ in a persuasive and confident manner. It’s time to engage: to learn to proclaim and defend the great truths of Christianity and to demolish false pretenses raised up against the knowledge of God with gentleness and respect. Workers needing not to be ashamed, we have reasons to believe. Find out what they are.
