Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: This Week's Top Ten Best-Sellers!

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Christianity is Hard and Easy

The ordinary idea which we all have before we become Christians is this. We take as starting point our ordinary self with its various desires and interests. We then admit that something else call it “morality” or “decent behavior,” or “the good of society” has claims on this self:  claims which interfere with its own desires. What we mean by “being good” is giving in to those claims…But we are hoping all the time that when all the demands have been met, the poor natural self will still have some chance, and some time, to get on with its own life and do what it likes. In fact, we are very like an honest man paying his taxes. He pays them all right, but he does hope that there will be enough left over for him to live on.

Lori Alexander is right: serious Christian men prefer debt-free virgins without tattoos

Tattoos are a problem for serious Christian men for several reasons. First, they cost money and for no gain, and can even cause you losses in your career. Second, most people get them because of low self-esteem or vanity or to look rebellious or to look dangerous. None of these motivations should be acted upon by someone with a robust Christian worldview. The money could be better used on charity, or investments, etc. Women show what their priorities really are by how they spend their money and time. Show me a woman’s bookshelf, and I’ll tell how seriously she has thought about what it means to be a Christian in all areas of life. Instead of showing me your tattoos to demonstrate your “spirituality”, show me your apologetics books, to demonstrate your intellectual engagement. And tell me how you used that information to engage in conversations, and write blog posts answering challenges to your faith. That way I’ll know that you use your money to train do hard things in order to have an influence for Christ in serious, practical, effective ways. A woman who can defend her faith and discuss Christianity with non-Christians is demonstrating her ability to raise Christian children in a secular society.

All of Us Ought to Agree on the Fallen Nature of Humans | Cold Case Christianity

While the concept of “Human Depravity” is an historic Christian doctrine, it’s also a condition I recognized as an atheist. My career as a police officer and my time as a parent settled the issue for me. If people are “basically good” shouldn’t we be able to verify this claim in the lives of infants? My toddler children needed to be taught about patience, kindness and unselfishness; these virtues were missing from their default nature. And it didn’t take long as a police officer to recognize the depth and complexity of our fallen citizenry. Most people who believe humans are “basically good” simply haven’t spent much time in the world as an experienced law enforcement first responder. So I was grateful when my ministry partner and fellow law enforcement professional, Aaron Brake, posted an article on the doctrine of Human Depravity . Aaron did an excellent job as he established two important truths:

WHAT IS MAN?: Adam, Alien or Ape? - Kindle edition by Edgar Andrews. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

The Psalmist did, of course, offer his own answer three millennia ago. Man, he claimed, was created by God for a clearly defined purpose — to exercise dominion over planet earth and (by implication) to ultimately share something of the glory of the divine nature. The rest, as they say, is history, but it’s not a happy tale. As Mark Twain says in another essay; “I can’t help being disappointed with Adam and Eve”. Not surprisingly, then, a large proportion of humanity today are looking for alternative solutions, accepting the challenge of the Psalmist’s question without embracing the optimism of his answer.

Why You Shouldn’t Ask God if the Book of Mormon Is True | Stand to Reason

Whenever a Mormon suggests we should pray to find out whether the Book of Mormon is true, we should begin by pointing out that this idea comes from the Book of Mormon itself. This in itself is problematic and amounts to a logical fallacy known as “begging the question” or circular reasoning. Begging the question occurs when you assume in your argument the conclusion you are trying to prove. In this example, we have to assume Moroni 10:4 is true when it exhorts us to pray with sincerity about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. In other words, we have to assume the Book of Mormon is true in order to find out if it’s true. This is nothing more than circular reasoning.

Who Was John Elof Boodin and Why Does He Matter? | Evolution News

Boodin was a philosopher of uncommon abilities. A former student of famed pragmatist William James and idealist Josiah Royce (both at Harvard), he was a scholar whose “resoluteness and beauty” shines through all of his work. Boodin’s great skill was as a synthesizer who combined various portions of pragmatism, realism, idealism, and Christian panentheism with a close reading of the science of his day. What emerges is an intellectual framework that is in many ways consilient with Bertalanffy’s — giving special importance to organization, embracing science but not scientism, recognizing the significance of matter without succumbing to materialism, all presented in a holistic context unafraid of the teleological implications, whether immediate or transcendent. In reading Boodin one always gets a tutorial (usually in equal measures) on history, philosophy, and science, all presented in richly textured, often poetic, prose.

Book Review: Science and the Mind of the Maker by Melissa Cain Travis

The fine-tuning of the universe was touched on in chapter 3, but chapter 5 takes it a step further by identifying the many ways in which the physical world is fine-tuned for scientific discovery. Fire is necessary for metallurgy, which is necessary for science. The earth’s atmosphere is not only optimal for respiration and radiation protection, it is also optimal for clear skies, making stars visible on the surface of the earth. Solar eclipses are only possible with a moon that is just the right size and the right distance away from the earth, and it happens to be that human beings exist on this planet at precisely the time when this is the case. None of these phenomena had to be the case, yet each is required both for habitability of the earth and for scientific discovery.

22 The Lost Art of Gratitude: Discipling Women Towards Thankfulness

The fact that we too have received Christ Jesus the Lord changes everything. Our calling is to walk in him. The best way to do that is to daily read God’s infallible word and then carry it out to the best of our ability down the path set forth specifically for us. Clearly, some believers have much rougher paths than others, but our Lord will equip us to walk boldly. Paul reminds the Colossians of the privilege they have to be “rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.” He states earlier, in Colossians 1:7, that he is aware of how they have learned from Epaphras, a “beloved fellow servant” and presumed minister in the church there. What a joy to be rooted in the faith!

What’s the Mission of God? See the Church

One of the key rationales for church planting is this: It puts the Christian community at the heart of mission. If individuals were at the heart of God’s purposes, then it would be natural to put the individual at the heart of mission. But at the heart of God’s plan of salvation is a family and a nation . So the church should be at the heart of mission. Together, the church demonstrates the reconciling power of the gospel . Our different life experiences give texture and color to our message. Our diverse gifts complement one another. We show that life together under the reign of God is the good life. The church should be at the heart of mission, and that happens naturally and inevitably in church planting. Scattered Communities of Light It is often said that mission in the Old Testament was centripetal , but that mission in the New Testament is centrifugal . Clearly, mission in the New Testament is centrifugal in a way that wasn’t the case in the Old Testament. We are to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). And yet at the same time, mission in the New Testament has not ceased to be centripetal.

Episode 082: Pros and Cons of Labels - Christian Research Institute

“A recent trend, which gained traction with a piece released by Planned Parenthood a handful of years ago (“Moving Beyond Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice Labels, You’re ‘Not in Her Shoes’”), is attempting to do just that. There is a growing desire that the terms pro-choice and pro-life be abolished because they do not adequately express feelings about abortion. Most people “just don’t want to be labeled,” proponents claim. They may very well be on to something, but they’re taking things too far…Simply put, labels come with pros and cons. Some labels are associated automatically with stereotypical meanings, which can be exacerbated further by any number of factors that influence individuals — culture, education, loyalties, circumstances, media. When labels are thrown out haphazardly, they oftentimes unfairly corral others into groups according to the audience’s perception… It may be that the call for abolishing the label pro-choice comes from the fact that many identify themselves as personally pro-life, while others label them pro-choice. These individuals play the moral relativism card by reducing moral truth to mere personal preference.

BreakPoint: Why Some Christians Embrace LGBT Theology

In the pamphlet, a woman who describes herself as a lesbian Christian says she had an “encounter with God,” and that He told her “You’re gay. I made you this way…This is who you are.” She was shocked to find that her church wasn’t buying this. “[T]hey wanted to know how I could scripturally justify what I was telling them,” she says. “They didn’t care so much about this spiritual encounter I’d had with God.” But isn’t that the same thing we ask of Mormons or Muslims or cult leaders who justify explicitly anti-biblical stances based on their experiences?

29 Proven Weapons in the Fight for Holiness

For example, when I begin to crave some illicit sexual pleasure, the sword-swing that has often severed the root of this promised pleasure is “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). I recall the pleasures I have tasted of seeing God more clearly from an undefiled conscience, and I recall the brevity and superficiality and oppressive aftertaste of sin’s pleasures, and with that, God has killed the conquering power of sin.

32 Jesus Understands Your Loneliness

Yet in order to be incarnated, he left, in some sense, the manifest and holy presence of his Father and the glory he enjoyed there from an eternity before the world existed (John 17:5). He had to endure living in a world under the power of the evil one (1 John 5:19). Think of when you’ve been far away from your dearest ones in a lonely, perhaps even desolate, place. Speaking to them by phone may have been sweet, but it was not the same as being with them. This is a poor analogy, but it makes the point. As the apostle Paul said, there is nothing like being face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12). Jesus would have experienced a “homesickness” for the presence of his Father far more profound and painful than anything we’ve experienced.

Neurosurgeon Michael Egnor asks, how can there NOT be free will?

Cosmic Bell Test: Measurement Settings from Milky Way Stars – 2017 Abstract: Bell’s theorem states that some predictions of quantum mechanics cannot be reproduced by a local-realist theory. That conflict is expressed by Bell’s inequality, which is usually derived under the assumption that there are no statistical correlations between the choices of measurement settings and anything else that can causally affect the measurement outcomes. In previous experiments, this “freedom of choice” was addressed by ensuring that selection of measurement settings via conventional “quantum random number generators” was spacelike separated from the entangled particle creation. This, however, left open the possibility that an unknown cause affected both the setting choices and measurement outcomes as recently as mere microseconds before each experimental trial. Here we report on a new experimental test of Bell’s inequality that, for the first time, uses distant astronomical sources as “cosmic setting generators.” In our tests with polarization-entangled photons, measurement settings were chosen using real-time observations of Milky Way stars while simultaneously ensuring locality.

Out of the Nest and Off to College: A Time for Exploration - Christian Research Institute

College may be one of the most anticipated times for young Americans and one of the most nostalgic times for American adults. It is often referred to as “a time for exploration.” It’s a time for students to figure out what to do with the rest of their lives; what they like, what they believe is the truth, and who they are. It is the beginning of a young adult’s independence. This can be scary to parents who have raised their children to be good Christians because it is common for children who were raised Christian to go off to college and return atheists or skeptics. Christians believe that truth and one’s true identity is found in Christ, but for college students, there are many roadblocks on this journey. The college party culture and philosophies of atheist professors detour young adults from finding the truth, but love and reason can help guide students back onto the right path.

Southern Baptists Work to Address Sexual Abuse

The Story: The Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination, is forming a study group to address sexual abuse. The Background: As one of his first official acts, J. D. Greear, the newly elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), will partner with the denomination’s policy arm, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), to form a study group on sexual abuse. The group will be composed of both Southern Baptist leaders and also outside experts who will advise Greear on a broad range of issues related to sexual abuse, including sexual assault and domestic violence. According to the ERLC, the group’s purpose will be to consider how Southern Baptists at every level can take discernible action to respond swiftly and compassionately to incidents of abuse, as well as to foster safe environments within churches and institutions. This group will also study both how Southern Baptists are currently engaging these issues and also develop recommendations on strategies and resources for ministering to victims and protecting people and churches from predators.

The Bible Is True, But …

No book is misused, misunderstood or collects more dust than the Bible.  Much of this stems from some misconceptions about what it is. While the Bible is 100 percent true, there are a few “buts” to consider. It’s important that we understand these buts so we can have a better understanding of the Bible and the message it’s communicating. Not only what the Bible is, but also what it isn’t. The BUTs are important.

How the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation falsified atheism

Prior to certain scientific discoveries, most people thought that the universe had always been here, and no need to ask who or what may have caused it. But today, that’s all changed. Today, the standard model of the origin of the universe is that all the matter and energy in the universe came into being in an event scientists call “The Big Bang”. At the creation event, space and time themselves began to exist, and there is no material reality that preceded them.

Hate Sin and Its Effects

In contending with certain sins there remains no mode of victory but by flight. The ancient naturalists wrote much of basilisks, whose eyes fascinated their victims and rendered them easy victims; so the mere gaze of wickedness puts us in solemn danger. He who would be safe from acts of evil must haste away from occasions of it. A covenant must be made with our eyes not even to look upon the cause of temptation, for such sins only need a spark, to begin with and a blaze follows in an instant. Who would wantonly enter the leper’s prison and sleep amid its horrible corruption? He only who desires to be leprous himself would thus court contagion. If the mariner knew how to avoid a storm, he would do anything rather than run the risk of weathering it. Cautious pilots have no desire to try how near the quicksand they can sail, or how often they may touch a rock without springing a leak; their aim is to keep as nearly as possible in the midst of a safe channel. . . . The devil I am to resist and he will flee from me, but the lusts of the flesh, I must flee, or they will surely overcome me.

There's a Difference Between Evidence and Proof | Cold Case Christianity

How can Metzger come to such a different conclusion than Ehrman? Was he looking at different evidence? No. Both men are examining the exact same set of facts, yet coming to two very different conclusions. How can this be? All of us, as fallen humans, are at war with the God who created us. All of us have an enmity toward God that must first be removed if we are ever going to see the evidence clearly. Only God can do such a thing. So, while I am always delighted to examine the evidence with someone, I recognize that I am only one of several means by which God can reveal Himself to those He has already called. I am prepared to make the case, but only God can turn the evidence into proof.
