Lori Alexander is right: serious Christian men prefer debt-free virgins without tattoos

Tattoos are a problem for serious Christian men for several reasons. First, they cost money and for no gain, and can even cause you losses in your career. Second, most people get them because of low self-esteem or vanity or to look rebellious or to look dangerous. None of these motivations should be acted upon by someone with a robust Christian worldview. The money could be better used on charity, or investments, etc. Women show what their priorities really are by how they spend their money and time. Show me a woman’s bookshelf, and I’ll tell how seriously she has thought about what it means to be a Christian in all areas of life. Instead of showing me your tattoos to demonstrate your “spirituality”, show me your apologetics books, to demonstrate your intellectual engagement. And tell me how you used that information to engage in conversations, and write blog posts answering challenges to your faith. That way I’ll know that you use your money to train do hard things in order to have an influence for Christ in serious, practical, effective ways. A woman who can defend her faith and discuss Christianity with non-Christians is demonstrating her ability to raise Christian children in a secular society.

BreakPoint: Why Some Christians Embrace LGBT Theology

In the pamphlet, a woman who describes herself as a lesbian Christian says she had an “encounter with God,” and that He told her “You’re gay. I made you this way…This is who you are.” She was shocked to find that her church wasn’t buying this. “[T]hey wanted to know how I could scripturally justify what I was telling them,” she says. “They didn’t care so much about this spiritual encounter I’d had with God.” But isn’t that the same thing we ask of Mormons or Muslims or cult leaders who justify explicitly anti-biblical stances based on their experiences?

7 Four Warnings for Your Twenties

In 1 Corinthians 10, the apostle Paul sits down with us, like a room full of grandmas, to explain how to read Moses in our daily fight against sin and for joy. He begins by reminding his readers of the Exodus and Israel’s wandering in the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:1–5). He explains that their hope was ultimately in Christ, even though Jesus would not be born for more than a thousand years (1 Corinthians 10:4). Then he writes, as if speaking to a crowd of twentysomethings today, “Now these things took place as examples for us , that we might not desire evil as they did” (1 Corinthians 10:6).

8 For Every Scar That Mothers Bear

This is my imaginary aftermath redo. Yet the unadulterated scar has turned to joy. Motherhood is not for perfectionists and is certainly not pain-free. But our scars are temporary and, more importantly, pointers to our Chief Scarbearer whose blood has washed away our sin. We will soon bid our painful scars farewell (Revelation 21:4).

Are Demons the Cause of All Human Illness? | Cold Case Christianity

Although there are several examples of demon possession in the Bible, the Scripture does not attribute all illness to demons. Skeptics often characterize Christians as superstitious people who attribute all physical ailments to the existence and influence of demons. But this is neither the Biblical record, nor what Christians believe. There are several New Testament passages describing the demon possessed and the sick as two different groups (joined by the word “and”):

The Bible Is True, But …

No book is misused, misunderstood or collects more dust than the Bible.  Much of this stems from some misconceptions about what it is. While the Bible is 100 percent true, there are a few “buts” to consider. It’s important that we understand these buts so we can have a better understanding of the Bible and the message it’s communicating. Not only what the Bible is, but also what it isn’t. The BUTs are important.

Did God Commit Atrocities by Ordering the Killing of Entire Cities of People?

The God in the Old Testament seems to have many personalities; cruel, unjust, kind, loving, etc." 1 There are, however, two major areas which we humans have a difficult time reconciling - God's love vs. God's righteousness. God is loving, but God's love requires God's justice. As I discipline my three children when they disobey, God disciplines us if we don't meet His requirements. The problem for us is that we cannot keep all of God's laws because of our selfishness and self-centeredness. 2 God would have been completely just and loving in destroying all of us for our disobedience to Him. It is only through His extraordinary love and grace that we are allowed into His presence.

Unhinging the Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence Mantra

As it is Easter season, skeptic Michael Shermer has an article in appearing in Scientific American entitled, "What Would It Take to Prove the Resurrection?" Shermer writes that as a skeptic, there are propositions he can accept as true, such as the number of pages in a magazine, the extinction of the dinosaurs, and the origin of the universe by a big bang. Unsurprisingly however, Shermer can think of nothing that would count as enough evidence for the resurrection for that particular proposition to be considered true. He claims this is due to the "principle of proportionality," something that "demands extraordinary evidence for extraordinary claims. Of the approximately 100 billion people who have lived before us, all have died and none have returned, so the claim that one (or more) of them rose from the dead is about as extraordinary as one will ever find." 1

Why I am bullish on Christianity (yes, you read that correctly)

I’ve seen the surveys. I’m aware of the rise of the so-called “nones,” who profess no religious affiliation. And frankly, that doesn’t trouble me very much. Rather than claiming to be Christians, as many have done in years past, now these people are now willing to be more honest. Today it’s socially acceptable -- in many places even desirable -- to be a skeptic. “Atheist” is no longer considered such a derogatory term.

Most of the readers of this blog have probably heard about the anthropic principle and the fine-tuning of the universe.  However, because future posts will discuss the ramifications and speculations about fine-tuning, I thought it would be prudent to give a brief overview of these topics. When Moses Preached the Gospel

The Old Testament purposefully has an unresolved narrative tension in it, and this very tension is the whole basis of the gospel. Narrative tension means you don’t know what’s going to happen and there are opposing forces at work. In other words, “Little Red Riding Hood took her grandmother some goodies” is not narrative. It’s just a report. “Little Red Riding Hood took her grandmother some goodies, but the Big Bad Wolf was waiting to eat her up” is a narrative, because we’ve got tension. We’re led to ask, “What’s going to happen?”

Tools for Inquiry: Logic and Observation

I was in a friendly mini-debate at a California college when the evolutionist interrupted me: “But creation can’t be scientific. Science deals only with things you can see and touch. Take energy, for example . . . .” Then he stopped. “Whoops! Made a mistake, didn’t I?” I hastened to agree. He, his students, and I all knew that there are forms of energy, like gravity, that you can’t see or touch or put in a bottle. Yet you know “gravity” is there (whatever it is!) because you can see the effects it has on matter. Similarly, God is a Spirit and can’t be seen—but you can see His effects on matter. Even the Bible tells us that “the invisible things of God are clearly seen in all the things that have been made” ( Rom. 1:20 ).

The Miracle Myth Debunked

On yesterday’s broadcast, I spoke about the Jesus Game . The rules are you have to begin with an anti-supernatural bias. Then you have to present a portrait of Jesus Christ that is wildly divergent from the biblical Christ. If your picture even remotely resembles the historical Christ, then you lose. On the other hand, if you present a Jesus who bears absolutely no resemblance to the Christ of the gospels, then you win. The more sophistry, sloppy journalism and sensationalism that you throw in, the better.

Alfred Russel Wallace — New Biography Is a Defeater for Arguments for Theistic Evolution | Evolution News

Miller’s own new book is The Human Instinct: How We Evolved to Have Reason, Consciousness, and Free Will , in which the Brown University biologist sets up a false dilemma under which we need to choose between two alternatives, Darwinism or special creation. The latter is understood as more or less equivalent to Young Earth Creationism. The false dilemma is typical of a certain kind of intellectual and emotional manipulation. It’s easily deflected, though. Simply show that there are not just two choices available but a third, or fourth, or more, as well. Flannery’s book, in telling the story of Wallace’s intellectual “evolution,” demonstrates the fallacy. Darwin’s own colleague-turned-critic perceived that evolution required an overarching guide, an intelligent agent, to accomplish its journey through time. This is intelligent design in a nutshell.

Prayer, Sovereignty, and Salvation

During His life of thirty-three years, Jesus lived in perfect accord with God’s law, fulfilling all righteousness on our behalf. Saved believers stand perfectly righteous before the Holy God. They are not just guiltless and sinless, but they are actually declared righteous on account of Christ. All that Jesus did on the earth is imputed into the believer’s account. We are justified before God through the active and passive obedience of Jesus. We are saved by His life and His death; that is good news. Only Christianity can bestow justification. All the world’s additional religions are based upon the religionist’s good deeds and personal merit. The problem is that Heaven is perfect, God is holy, and nothing unholy and unrighteous will enter God’s Heaven. Biblical justification is the only solution to man’s sin and Adam’s disobedience.

43
Why New Testament Miracles Shouldn't Disqualify the Gospels

Many critics point to the presence of the miraculous to make a case for late dating. Surely the miracles are works of fiction. If the gospel accounts were written early, eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus would have exposed these miracles as fictitious, right? Much of this critical analysis comes from a literary discipline known as “form criticism.” Form critics attempt to classify portions of Scripture on the basis of their literary “type,” “pattern,” or “form.” Once these pieces are isolated within the larger narrative, form critics attempt to explain their origin. In the case of the Gospels, form critics have argued that the supernatural elements are different from those parts of the narrative that can be trusted as accurate history. They explain the “paradigms,” “sayings,” “miracle stories,” and “legends”46 as late additions inserted by local Christian communities to make a particular theological case or to present Jesus as something more than He was.

4 steps to spiritual survival for bi-vocational pastors

Bi-vocational pastors, then, are perfectly positioned to experience the power of Christ. For they walk weekly on the razor edge of weakness as they experience each pastoral task crying out for more; a few more hours on the sermon, a few more people to counsel, a few more minutes to prepare for that meeting. Yet, God ordains that bi-vocational ministry to have its unique and persistent thorns, not so that a pastor may avoid his limitations, but so he can boast in them to allow the Spirit of Christ to empower him in his weakness. We are called to rejoice in this reality and expect power from Christ.
