From Belfast to Narnia: The Life and Faith of C.S. Lewis

Volume XX of Tremendous Leadership's Life-Changing Classic Series Clive Staples Lewis, better known as “Jack” to his friends and family, made only a few trips outside of his homeland, Great Britain, and yet today he is known globally as one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Through his timeless writings, he has touched and moved the lives of countless individuals in his time and beyond. In this brief introduction to his life and works you will uncover what inspired him, what drove him and what experiences shaped the life of this extraordinary writer, theologian and friend of God. The C.S. Lewis Institute was founded in 1976.  In the legacy of C.S. Lewis, we develop disciples of Jesus Christ who will articulate, defend, share and live their faith in public and personal life. We’re not a C.S. Lewis fan club, but rather hope to raise up thousands like Lewis who sought to live wholeheartedly as a disciple of Jesus Christ in all areas of life.    Please note that the ebook option is a PDF ebook that is readable on any device that supports the PDF format. Destroy Her with Discontent

Make her discontent, convince her that she’s not worth anything, and then drive her into all kinds of self-destructive tendencies. Enslave her to beauty, leaving her discontent to hold the whip that makes her run. And if you can drive her into a profound self-absorption and pride, then you will be able to sit back and feel satisfied with your work. The irony is that the silly women never seem to notice that whether they obsess over their own beauty or intentionally harm themselves, it’s all the same to us. We win either way.

Forensic Faith

Believers are commanded in 1 Peter 3:15 to always be ready to “to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” Being able to provide such a defense requires the believer to have a practical understanding of the faith in which they have placed their hope. Part of this effort involves the practice of apologetics. Moreover, developing a good apologetic for the faith includes utilizing the vast amount of evidence available in support of the faith. Having valuable tools on hand which outline in a helpful manner this fount of evidence is also essential.

The Impotence of Darwinism: A Christian Scientist Looks at the Evidence

What Darwin proposed in 1859 was simply that all organisms are related by common descent. This process of descent or evolution was carried out by natural selection acting on variation found in populations. There was no guidance, no purpose, and no design in nature. The modern Neo-Darwinian variety of evolution identifies the source of variation as genetic mutation, changes in the DNA structure of organisms. Therefore, evolution is described as the common descent of all organisms by mutation and natural selection, and is assumed to be able to explain everything we see in the biological realm.

A Crutch or a Cross

Firstly, it is helpful to define what we mean by a “crutch.” In a medical setting, the word obviously means an implement used by people for support when they are injured. The analogy implies, therefore, that those who need one are somehow deficient or wounded. In a sense, it is fairly obvious that the most vulnerable might need support, but as the agnostic John Humphrys points out, “Don’t we all? Some use booze rather than the Bible.”(3) As this suggests, it is not so much a question of whether you have one, but it is more of a question of what your particular crutch is . This is an important point to make, as people rely on all kinds of things for their comfort or self-esteem, ranging from material possessions, money, food, and aesthetics to cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, and sex. Rather than being viewed as signs of weakness, many of these are even considered to be relatively normal in society, provided they don’t turn into the more destructive behavior associated with strong addiction. Nevertheless, many of these only offer a short-term release from the struggles of life and they sometimes only cover up deeper problems that a person might be suffering from.

Worshiping with Those Who Hurt You

Regardless of whether we find complete reconciliation with those who hurt us before we get to heaven, we can be hopeful that God will bring peace in his people to completion (Philippians 1:6). As we remember the gospel, we become people who find our hope in the gospel. Even in the midst of the hurt, we are able to join with the psalmist in joyfully saying, “I must perform my vows to you, O God; I will render thank offerings to you. For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life” (Psalm 56:12–13).

The Danger of Jesus as a Wise Guy | Cold Case Christianity

“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” At this the Jews exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” the Jews said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:49-58)

How Do You Motivate People to Care about Apologetics? Part 2

Churches need to be reminded of why they are here. Evangelism and apologetics, which is the handmaiden to evangelism, are not optional activities. They are at the very core of our mission, which is to reach our world with the gospel. That’s why Jesus spelled it out so clearly: to go into all the world (including next door or down the hallway) to reach everyone we can for him (Matthew 20:18-20). This Great Commission wasn’t one choice among many options. It’s what we’re here to do.

The Prayers You Need Most Are Not Your Own

As if that were not grace enough, the Holy Spirit is also present, on speakerphone, as it were. He’s calling directly from our hearts, where he not only knows our every need more intimately than do we ourselves, but he also gazes into the depths of the Father’s will with complete clarity. Since all of his requests are perfectly in line with that will, and everything for which he asks echoes the requests of the beloved Son, his continual requests are continually granted.

How God Sent His Word to An Iraqi Interpreter

And sure enough, God began profoundly changing my father’s heart. My family noticed a huge difference when he returned from prison. He became a hard worker, less selfish and an overall happier man who always had a smile on his face. As an example, one week after his release, my father and I went shopping for clothes. We ran into a man wearing tattered clothing who was obviously homeless. My father had compassion for this man and, stripping down to his underwear, gave away the clothes he was wearing. He said, “He needs these clothes more than I do.” I stood in shock because of his generosity. I knew then that my father’s life had been forever changed.

Interview with Carl Trueman on Ulrich Zwingli - Westminster Theological Seminary

Trueman: Ulrich Zwingli was the first great reformer of the city of Zürich in Switzerland. He was born on New Year’s Day in 1484, just a few weeks after Martin Luther. So they were the same age, but in some ways, they came from different worlds. Luther was a medieval man; he trained in a medieval university, medieval curriculum, as a monk, medieval calling. Zwingli was a humanist. He grew up under the tutelage of those who are profoundly influenced by humanism, and specifically by Erasmus. He became a Catholic priest and from 1518 onwards he was a minister in Zürich, where he came to the conviction that the city as a whole, public city, city life, as well as church life, needed to be reformed in accordance with the word of God. His move to Reformation was, I think, more existential than Luther’s. We don’t hear in Zwingli about this great wrestling with his personal sin; but he came to a conviction that life as a whole was to be regulated by the Word of God.

Why Apologetics is Essential to Being a Pastor

That may sound like a bold statement but stick with me. The most common title for clergy is that of pastor (at least within protestant traditions). What is a pastor? The basic meaning of a pastor is not one who performs religious services but that of a shepherd. As a profession, ministers have adopted the shepherd as the primary image for what we do.

Does Dating Prepare Us for Marriage — or Divorce?

Dating is an intentional pursuit of marriage, not casual preparation for it. Unfortunately, many of us are being told we must date early and often if we ever want to be ready for marriage. For instance, one popular Christian dating book reads, “Dating is an incubator time of discovering the opposite sex, one’s own sexual feelings, moral limits, one’s need for relationship skills, and one’s tastes for people.” Sounds practical and reasonable on the surface. Until you think about putting yourself (or your daughter) into someone else’s “incubator” for a few months, or years, while he or she tries out their “sexual feelings” and “moral limits.” We put too much of ourselves at risk in dating to donate our hearts to someone’s romantic experiment.

Four keys to reading (and teaching) the Psalms — Southern Equip

The key of F  applies the Psalms to God’s people in union with Christ. ‘F’ stands for fellowship and represents the spiritual union we have with the Christ, of whom the Psalms are ultimately directed. Truly, we may often intuitively translate the Psalms into this key. It would be laborious to always work through each key to get here. Daily devotions may and should live in this key. Still, it is important to know how and why we can sing and pray the Psalms for ourselves. Likewise, in applying them to ourselves, we should not miss who the king is and who the worshipers are. Without attention to the previous keys, we may easily employ messianic psalms for our own kingdoms (see Pss 20–21). However, by increasing our awareness of keys D, E, and C, we should avoid praying, “My kingdom come.”

32
Put God Back in the Golden Rule

Jesus’s Golden Rule cannot be domesticated and downsized to the equivalent of an insurance aphorism or a fortune-cookie slogan. That’s not to say that many haven’t tried. Here’s how the Golden Rule is usually quoted: “Whatever you wish others would do for you, do also for them.”

33
Passive Christianity Is Dead Christianity

Second, Jesus calls us to believe (Mark 1:15; 9:23). For Jesus, believing is never mere intellectual assent to a creed. It always implies and requires action. James’s statement that faith without works is dead is backed up by the entire Bible. If you believe God, you will do what he says (Matthew 7:21; John 14:15).

How the LGBT Movement Used Fake Science to Push Gay Marriage

In summary, there is no evidence to suggest that lesbian women or gay men are unfit to be parents or that psychosocial development among children of lesbian women or gay men is compromised relative to that among offspring of heterosexual parents. Not a single study has found children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents. Indeed, the evidence to date suggests that home environments provided by lesbian and gay parents are as likely as those provided by heterosexual parents to support and enable children’s psychosocial growth.

GW170104: Observation of a 50-Solar-Mass Binary Black Hole Coalescence at Redshift 0.2

Time–frequency representation [ 9 ] of strain data from Hanford and Livingston detectors (top two panels) at the time of GW170104. The data begin at 1167559936.5 GPS time. The third panel from the top shows the time-series data from each detector with a 30–350 Hz bandpass filter, and band-reject filters to suppress strong instrumental spectral lines. The Livingston data have been shifted back by 3 ms to account for the source’s sky location, and the sign of its amplitude has been inverted to account for the detectors’ different orientations. The maximum-likelihood binary black hole waveform given by the full-precession model (see Sec.  4 ) is shown in black. The bottom panel shows the residuals between each data stream and the maximum-likelihood waveform.

Playground Apologetics: Apologetics Tactics for Busy Moms

Earlier this week I found myself caught in the morning line of cars leaving my neighborhood’s elementary school.  I live with my husband and 3-year-old son in a suburb of San Antonio. We’re in south Texas and our “Mayberry” (as many call it) is incredibly conservative – and not just politically.  We have a lot of churches. When I say “a lot,” I mean that we could put you in a blindfold at most any intersection in the city, give you a stone to throw, and you’d probably hit one. It’s Narnia, for sure.  Or a bubble.  Whatever you’d like to call it. So, you can imagine my surprise on Tuesday as I pulled up behind a big SUV boldly emblazoned with a lightbulb-shaped sticker and the words “skeptic kids.”  There went my bubble.

Should Energy Drinks Fuel the Christian Life?

Welcome to a new week of episodes with John Piper on the Ask Pastor John podcast. Today we talk energy drinks. José writes in: “Pastor John, energy drinks are controversial in our youth group, and as someone who likes them, I was wondering if there are any negative effects or reason to not drink them. They help me focus and have energy during my work shift. I only drink one every two or three days, but I would like to have some spiritual insight in order that I may run this race without being slowed down.” He ends with a smiley emoticon. Pastor John, how should we think about energy drinks?

Spectacular Sins

When it comes to holocausts or other horrors, most of us assume God has his hands tied and his back to the wall. We figure the devil wreaks havoc when God's not looking; we rationalize the Lord's 'mistakes,' figuring he absentmindedly took his hands off the wheel when tragedies happen. But John Piper paints a different picture from the pages of Scripture that will strengthen your heart, bolster your faith, and deepen your understanding of the 'largeness' of God's sovereignty. 45 Do the Laws of Logic Provide Evidence for God? | Reasonable Faith

Here is my question: Why do you not employ the laws of logic as evidence for the existence of God? It seems to me that God (a necessarily existing mind) is the best explanation for the laws of logic in a similar way that he (a necessary personal being of moral perfection) is the best explanation for certain necessary moral truths. Am I mistaken about logic as evidence for the existence of God? Is there a reason the laws of logic should not be used in an argument similar to your argument from objective moral values and duties?

When God Seems Silent

All of God’s saints, if allowed to live long enough, are led into the lonely, disorienting, weary wilderness. And while there, we lament. And since laments are often better sung than said, it’s always been the poets and songwriters who help us most.

Why I Love the Evening Service (And You Can Too)

Interesting thoughts. There are possibly some benefits to a Sunday evening service depending on the church and circumstances. I’m glad, though, that you fell short of saying it is required by scripture. So many people believe that because of their traditions. But Sunday evening services didn’t even start until the invention of electric lighting. Churches saw it as a way to use new technology to bring people into the church. They would sometimes be the only place that had lighting in the community, and they would use it to invite people in. The majority of people don’t know that, and believe that having an evening service is just the way it always was. In fact, though, the early Church wasn’t even services in a church building at all. They mostly met in homes and studied God’s Word, fellowshipped, and worshipped in small group communities. Of course, they eventually grew to become bigger churches that we know today. But there is something to be said about the smaller group setting. If used properly, it helps nurture community and encourages greater discussion of the Bible, helping people understand it beyond Sunday morning sermons.
