'Daredevil' Is Coming Back for Another a Season

Netflix is going all-in with its Marvel franchises. At San Diego Comic Con this week, the streaming network not only show teasers for the new season of Jessica Jones and the first season of Luke Cage, but also announced that its hit Daredevil would be returning for a third season. The streaming provider has big plans for the shows. In addition to creating another show based on Jon Bernthal’s Punisher—who appears in Daredevil—Netflix is also bringing the Hells Kitchen heroes (along with Iron Fist), together, for their own super-team in another series, called The Defenders. You’ll soon have a lot of binge watching to do.

The Theology of Donald Trump

I am not a politician, but a minister who teaches theology. As a citizen of this great republic, I have convictions about domestic and foreign policy, but none of that qualifies me to join the fray of political experts and pundits. I am qualified, however, to engage the topic of significant support among self-identified “evangelical voters” for Donald Trump and what this means, not for the country but what it suggests about significant segments of the US church.

God Thinks More of Your Obedience Than You Do

He is not here saying, “You are blameless because of your justification,” but, “Be blameless, innocent, and without blemish because of your conduct.” How can Christians be all of these things? Because our loving Father accepts less — a lot less (think “small beginnings”) — than perfection from us because of his perfect Son and for the sake of his perfect Son, who is glorified in us (John 17:10).

Apologetics and Your Kids: Avoiding Lazy Thinking

Last time I drew attention to some fallacious ideas which circulate on the airwaves and in popular culture. There are many more. In fact, even Christians have manufactured some pretty misleading mottoes and aphorisms which they use as watchwords instead of Scripture. Perhaps I’ll come back to that later, but right now I want to press on with the subject of worldviews.

13 BreakPoint This Week: Hope Under Pressure

The urge to despair right now is almost palpable. But drawing on the book of 1 Peter, John Stonestreet insists that Christians should be a people characterized by hope. Listen Now | Download In this week's broadcast, John Stonestreet shares a message he gave at a recent event with Alliance Defending Freedom. Drawing from the book of 1 Peter, John challenges his listeners to get serious about living lives characterized by hope. Under increasing cultural pressure to conform, to accept lies, or to despair of seeing Christ's kingdom come "on earth as it is in Heaven," the Apostle Peter offers us a reason to hold on to our hope. Our faith is not wishful thinking, but is grounded in the resurrection and inevitable victory of Jesus in human history. Lay Aside the Weight of Tomorrow’s Trouble

This way of life is not meant to be a lofty ideal. Jesus wants it to be our daily reality. His command that we “not be anxious for tomorrow” is a great mercy to us. The Most Ignored Commandment

All in all a good article, except for this statement, “So if you’re ready to start attempting to keep a Sabbath”. In the bible “Sabbath” is most often preceded by “the” or “my”. The few times it is preceded by “a” there is a clear distinction as to what is being referenced. It is never left open ended for the reader to decide to what day the “a” is referring. More specifically the Ten Commandments say “the Sabbath” not “a Sabbath”. The fourth commandment makes clear what Sabbath it is talking about, “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week or what we now know as Saturday.

How Do You Define Joy?

For example, say you are going camping. You wake up, and there is this gigantic silhouette of a bear outside your tent, a grizzly bear. He seems hungry. You don’t say, “Now, let me think about this. There is a bear. Bears are big. Bears are dangerous. Conclusion: I should feel fear here, so I will now decide to be afraid.” Emotions don’t work like that. Thinking works like that, but feeling doesn’t. It happens to you, which means that the Bible is filled with commands that we do things that are immediately outside our control to do — commands to rejoice, to fear, to be grateful, to be tender-hearted.

How to Raise an Alien Child

So much of parental decision-making can focus on helping our kids “fit in.” But 1 Peter 2:11-12 calls believers to live as aliens and strangers, in such a way that our unmistakably strange lives bring glory to God. As Christian parents, our greatest hope for our children is that they would grow to know, love, and serve God with everything they have. But those who grow to know, love, and serve God with everything they have don’t blend in. This podcast examines six key areas in which we can help our children trade the comfort of “fitting in” for the calling of standing out.

Scientists Should Tell Lawrence Krauss to Shut Up Already

In a recent opinion piece for The New Yorker , physicist Lawrence Krauss proclaims that “all scientists should be militant atheists.” Why? You won’t get any clear answer from the article, which is even thinner on argumentation (as opposed to sheer assertion) than the usual New Atheist tract—indeed, even thinner than the usual Lawrence Krauss tract, which is saying something. Most of the piece is about Kim Davis, Hobby Lobby, and other matters of public controversy entirely irrelevant to either science or the question of God’s existence.

The troubles of the working poor are well known to policymakers, but Vance offers an insider’s view of the problem. Parents, Do Not Let Your Child Become a Statistic

Google has become the new encyclopedia. YouTube provides the video to most any type of information one is looking to find. And Wikipedia is the quick "go to" source for everything true or false. The Most Frightening Prayer I Could Pray for My Children

And it will mean that my children have to see that they have sinned against a holy God and that it is only through the grace and sacrifice of his Son that they can be forgiven. Jesus said that those who have been forgiven little will love little (Luke 7:47). My children need to know what that means. They have to see the utter depths of their sinfulness and that without Jesus, they are without hope. And they have to trust in Jesus as their only source of hope and righteousness. Only as they acknowledge their need for him and his forgiveness will they grow to love God in the way I most want for them.

The Truth About Living with an Invisible Illness

This is just one scene from my invisible fight with the degenerative condition that rages in my body every day. When others see me, as my neurologist recently described, they see “a completely normal 27-year-old woman.” Every other person I run into at church tells me how cute I look; really, I often dress up to cope with how bad I feel inside. I guess it might be working.

Intelligence as We Know It

There is a bit of fuss among scientists and philosophers regarding the possibility of producing an artificially intelligent being that is actually intelligent. It might seem pessimistic to say that human beings are not even close to being able to manufacture genuine intelligence, but that is my thesis. This is not an attack on technology or on the remarkable advancements that have been made in computer science; rather, my contention is that none of these advancements come close to instantiating intelligence as we know it.

Contradictions: Could Adam Eat from Any Tree?

But there are other potential solutions that could eliminate this alleged contradiction. The Lord could have been speaking of the fruit on the face of the whole earth beyond the special and unique Garden of Eden. This would make sense considering there were special instructions given to Adam regarding what was edible in the Garden and what was not. In other words, they may have been complementary commands given for two different places.

7 Ways to Deal with Doubt

Doubt is not unbelief. Again, doubt is the bridge that connects current faith to perfect faith. And that bridge will stand until our death or Christ’s return. When we go through a faith crisis, though, we don’t naturally see things this way. Once doubt enters and infects our lives on a conscious level, we may interpret it as outright unbelief. We simply don’t know how else to process it. We think we’re on an inevitable road to complete unbelief.

How Not to Ruin Your Family as a Christian Leader

The key is to humbly accept that we’re learners until we die. None of us is perfectly balanced. Our children should know we’re fellow strugglers with them along the path to balance, and they should see us apologizing with genuine sorrow for not being at things they want us to be at because of our ministry. If we say things like “Don’t you realize I have God’s work to do?” we feed resentment against the ministry and against God himself in the minds of our kids. Instead, heartfelt sorrow helps heal the wounds of their disappointments with our not being with them when they wanted. This is a tiring balance to maintain—indeed, the balanced life is our cross. Being committed to family and ministry is tough, but the joy of having a happy home more than compensates for the tiredness and strain.

The Inexplicable Fine-Tuning of the Foundational Forces in Our Universe

The appearance of fine-tuning in our universe has been observed by theists and atheists alike. Even physicist Paul Davies (who is agnostic when it comes to the notion of a Divine Designer) readily stipulates, “Everyone agrees that the universe looks as if it was designed for life.” Oxford philosopher John Leslie agrees: “it looks as if our universe is spectacularly ‘fine-tuned for life’. By this I mean only that it looks as if small changes in this universe’s basic features would have made life’s evolution impossible.” The foundational “laws of nature” are amazingly fine-tuned; there is very little room for alteration. The smallest modifications of these laws would completely destroy the possibility of life in the universe. Theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking says the laws of physics “appear fine-tuned in the sense that if they were altered by only modest amounts, the universe would be qualitatively different, and in many cases unsuitable for the development of life…The emergence of the complex structures capable of supporting intelligent observers seems to be very fragile.

How Self-Help Can Become Self-Hurt

So should we trash all self-improvement efforts? Surely not. We should absolutely learn as much as we can in an effort to better ourselves. Much practical advice is helpful. We should learn effective time management, goal-setting, and leadership tactics. These are good things. But we must not place our hope in them. Instead, we must anchor our hearts on the rock of Christ. We must not let self-help become a false gospel or a counterfeit god.

Top Ten Verses to Defend Your Faith

For the past few days I have been trying to think of the top ten verses that would be most helpful to apologists and evangelists. I have reflected on my own experience and also gotten feedback from many of you on Facebook and Twitter. So, here are my top ten verses to defend your faith (in no particular order):

45 Contradictions: Eve’s Birth Certificate

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. ( Genesis 1:27–31 )

Squeezing the Lost Grand Canyon of Egypt into the Young Earth Paradigm: An impossible* Task

In Egypt the Nile River Valley conceals a massive canyon that once was as deep and wide as the Grand Canyon in Arizona.  We have explored the origins of this lost canyon in the past three posts.   We found that geologists have described the origins of the canyon itself at the time of the Messinian Salinity Crises just over 5 million years ago.  Further studies suggest that it took some four million years for the Nile Valley canyon to be filled with sediments from input from the Nile River and that the Nile Valley has probably looked like it does today for the past one million years though the Nile River has experienced many changes in volume over that time.

Those Hypocritical Christians! 4 Ways that Theological Truth Transcends Bad Behavior

For those who do not know my testimony, I left the ministry for seven years due to great doubts pertaining to the truthfulness of Christianity. I nearly became an agnostic…in fact, I seriously teetered with the idea for some time. My agnosticism wasn’t that I didn’t think that God couldn’t exist, but rather that I wasn’t sure that one could know God completely. This doubt was fueled by the lack of answers I was given by Christian leaders against the skeptical claims of the Jesus Seminar.[1] However, another element intensified the doubts that I possessed—Christian hypocrisy; that is to say, Christians who claimed to be devout but dismissed Christian teachings when it was convenient for them. Could I devote myself to something that held so many that refused to take its claims seriously?

Justice Is at the Heart of the Gospel

If the myriad of tragic events of the last few weeks has done anything for Americans, it's shown us the stark need for justice in the world. Because at the heart of the Christian message is justice itself. And that means, according to Lisa Sharon Harper, the only hope the world has for justice is the message of the gospel.
