Truthbomb Apologetics: Debate: Does God Exist? John Lennox vs. Michael Shermer

Welcome! It's been wisely stated that the way one answers the question, "Is there a God?" defines a life. Here at Truthbomb Apologetics we strive to offer apologetics resources to encourage and challenge both believer and unbeliever. Critical thinking is strongly encouraged, reason is a must, and all are welcomed!

Grace to You

Let’s pray. Such a joy to be together, Lord, and to know the truth and to love the truth and to hear the truth, embrace the truth. Make us not only people who know it, love it, believe it, but proclaim it. Give us courage. Give us boldness. Protect us. Protect Your gospel, Your truth. We don’t want to say we’ve given up. You can do anything. You will build Your church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. You will call out Your people. You will preach Your gospel. You will draw Your own to yourself. Use us for that. Make us a light in the darkness. May we be known for our love and our truthfulness. May we be faithful to preach the gospel of loving grace and the threat of eternal judgment. And Lord Jesus, be glorified in your church, and Lord, be glorified in the world. Come quickly. Come quickly. Amen.

God's Not Dead: God's Not Dead: The Bible is the Word of the Lord

Christ’s death on the cross was foretold before that form of execution had even been invented by Persia. Psalm 22:1-16 announces the crucifixion hundreds of years before it happened: “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me... But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. All who see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip; they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD; let Him deliver him; let Him rescue him, since He delights in him! I am poured out like water, and all my bones are spread apart; my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels and You have brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have circled around me; the band of spoilers have hemmed me in, they have pierced my hands and my feet.”

How to Persuade the Disinterested and Resistant

I n the late 1960s, Os Guinness worked alongside Francis Schaeffer at L’Abri, Schaeffer’s famed Christian retreat center in Switzerland. In the 1980s, he moved to the United States, where he served (among other places) at the Woodrow Wilson Center and the Brookings Institution. He has been heavily involved in discussions about the First Amendment and the need for a vigorous, civil public square. Yet he never lost Schaeffer’s vision for Christian apologetics and evangelism, a fact reflected in his latest book, Fool’s Talk: Recovering the Art of Christian Persuasion (InterVarsity Press). CT senior writer Tim Stafford spoke with Guinness about making the gospel appealing in a secularizing culture.

13 Quotes From Hugh Ross on Biblical Inerrancy, Interpretation, and Authority

"People who seem most concerned with defending biblical inerrancy may be the most resistant to any information derived outside the Bible that might help illuminate what the Bible means. Logically, taking Scripture seriously means being passionately concerned about interpreting it correctly and thus welcoming any evidence that exposes erroneous understandings of Scripture. Unfortunately, many zealous Bible believers confuse their favored interpretations of the Bible with the Word of God itself."

Romans 9:22–23, Part 1: God Wants to Show His Wrath

Hope for Mourning Parents

Micah was eventually taken to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where doctors revived his breathing. But after nearly one hour without oxygen, there was no hope for any brain activity. Over the next 24 hours, we prayed that our sovereign and good God would miraculously heal our little boy. But by 10:00 the next morning, we were told Micah had so little brain activity there was no hope for recovery. Heather, deciding she could not be in the room when Micah’s ventilator was removed, said her final goodbye, encouraging him to “run to Jesus, sweetie, run to Jesus.”  A few minutes later, I held my son as the doctors removed the ventilator that was giving him breath. In the single deepest moment of anguish I ever have or ever will experience, my son’s little heart stopped beating.

Article: Killing the Canaanites: A Response to the New Atheism’s “Divine Genocide” Claims by Clay Jones

Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God

In 1966 Time magazine ran a cover story asking: Is God Dead? Many have accepted the cultural narrative that he’s obsolete—that as science progresses, there is less need for a “God” to explain the universe. Yet it turns out that the rumors of God’s death were premature. More amazing is that the relatively recent case for his existence comes from a surprising place—science itself.

New IRS Documents Used Donor Lists to Target Audits

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that it has obtained documents from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that confirm that the IRS used donor lists to tax-exempt organizations to target those donors for audits.  The documents also show IRS officials specifically highlighted how the U.S. Chamber of Commerce may come under “high scrutiny” from the IRS.  The IRS produced the records in a Freedom of Information lawsuit seeking documents about selection of individuals for audit-based application information on donor lists submitted by Tea Party and other 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organizations ( Judicial Watch v. Internal Revenue Service (No. 1:15-cv-00220)).

Why the Catholic Behind the Planned Parenthood Videos Went Undercover

@ Jean Ler:  As I noted in my post yesterday, Catholic doctrine does not condone that the end justifies the means.  My own view is this:  When the Law itself is criminal, when the Legal System itself does nothing to protect the helpless, then extra-legal means can serve as a just substitute for what should be done by our now-criminal government.  Jean, let me ask:  “Thou shalt not murder” is the 6th commandment; yet the Church teaches “just war” theory, in which killing other people is not only allowed but is sometimes a duty.  Pope Francis himself has called for non-specified actions to control the predations of ISIS—including war, perhaps.  Do you, Jean, for example, propose that police-run undercover operations are sinful?  When the police and the government themselves are complicit in the crimes of abortion, then we private citizens have a right—nay, a duty—to “take the (higher, God’s) Law into our own hands”!  I am NOT advocating for acts of violence against abortionists; but since when is exposing the truth of these vile criminals’ actions somehow wrong?  As for “exposing” crimes committed within the Church, the only way undercover operations could work in these circumstances would be if sinful behavior is occurring to begin with.

Obama DOJ To Investigate Group That Busted Planned Parenthood

It’s interesting that Lynch decided so early to make a statement about the group. There are certainly more videos to come, and if Planned Parenthood’s panicked press releases are any indication, the footage may be far more damaging than anything that’s been revealed thus far. However, given the abject politicization of multiple agencies under Obama’s command — including the Internal Revenue Service, which targeted conservative non-profits, and the DOJ, which has been hesitant to investigate Obama allies — it seems unlikely that Lynch and those who report to her will ever crack down on Abortion, Inc.

Search for extraterrestrial intelligence gets a $100-million boost

Breakthrough Listen has not finalized its search strategy, but one of the project’s first tasks will be to fully scan stars for signals in the frequency band between about 1 gigahertz (GHz) and 10 GHz (including the region known as the water hole, because it includes frequencies at which H and OH emit radio waves). The band has been identified in the past as a good channel for deliberate alien communication because signals can travel through interstellar space and Earth’s atmosphere without much interference. “Previously we’ve only been able to hunt and peck at it, now we’ll search that entire spectrum comprehensively,” says Siemion.

4 Signs You Might be Legalistic

As Christians, we often find ourselves viewing Church activity as exclusively spiritual instead of seeing all things as spiritual. The Apostle Paul has this amazing quote in Colossians when he says, "All things are from Him and to Him and in Him." I see this verse as an echo of David's psalm when he says, "Where can I go from your presence and where can I escape from Your Spirit?" David says again, "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it belongs to Him." That means that there are no moments that are not spiritual moments. That's why Paul says, "Whether you eat or drink do it unto the Lord."

A God Worth Repeating in Worship

As a worship pastor, part of my job is to read and evaluate the lyrics of the songs we sing in worship. I’m looking for theologically rich words that we can easily sing together as a church — rich and simple, deep and memorable. Often, a bit of repetition can help a congregation learn and remember a song. But let’s not go overboard, right? We don’t want to sing a song that just repeats the same thing ad nauseam . We want depth.

What to Remember When Bad Things Happen

Because we live in these conditions, experiencing a broken heart is almost inevitable. Many of us will face the intense emotional pain associated with grief, disappointment or other overwhelming circumstances. If you are currently working through heartbreak, remember there is purpose to these bad things. Through these experiences, we arrive at a place where we can learn the following four things:

“A Lot of People Want Intact Hearts These Days” — Planned Parenthood, Abortion, and the Conscience of a Nation

The video reveals Dr. Deborah Nucatola, senior director of medical services for Planned Parenthood, discussing the intentional harvesting of organs and other tissues from babies aborted in Planned Parenthood clinics. While reaching with her fork for salad, Dr. Nucatola openly tells a group she believes to be medical researchers that there is a great demand for fetal livers, but “a lot of people want intact hearts these days.”

Raising future men and women

There are no generic people. There are men, and there are women. Consequently there are no generic Christian people. There are Christian men and there are Christian women. In Genesis 1-2, Ephesians 5, 1 Peter 3, and Colossians 3, we find clarity about the primary roles of men and women. There are differing ways in which men and women will live out the Christian life. For instance, when giving specific instruction and admonition to men, the Bible usually does so within three key categories: leading, providing and protecting. In other words, biblical masculinity involves a heart that is inclined to obey God within this particular context of leadership, provision and protection. This may take place predominantly as husbands and fathers, but it still should be cultivated, encouraged and instilled in boys as they mature into manhood.

Beloved Dust

“This is a important look at the most important aspect of life—what a genuine relationship with God really looks like. Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel address our expectations and frustrations about spiritual growth in a hopeful, empowering way. Beloved Dust strikes the rare balance of being rich and deep while remaining practical and engaging. This book delivers on what it means, and doesn’t mean, to grow in a relationship with God.”

Vibrant Pluto stuns scientists

New Horizons collected nearly all of its most precious observations in a 24-hour window as it whizzed past Pluto , and those data will trickle back to Earth over the next 16 months. Early findings include the fact that Pluto does not have any other satellites apart from its five known moons — at least nothing larger than about 1.5 kilometres across. And instruments aboard the craft measured nitrogen ions escaping from Pluto’s atmosphere much farther away from the dwarf planet than expected. That suggests that Pluto has a more tenuous hold on its atmosphere than scientists had thought, says team member Fran Bagenal, a space physicist at the University of Colorado Boulder. As Pluto’s atmosphere drifts away, some of it may sweep past Charon, get captured and condense into the dark polar cap seen there.

Contraception Mandate Heading to Supreme Court

Under Obamacare, religious nonprofits are required to provide a free contraception benefit in their health insurance plans or "opt out" for religious reasons. The nonprofits say these requirements violate the free exercise of religion, as guaranteed by the Constitution. The federal appeals court recently ruled against the organizations, which have decided to initiate an appeal to the high court. The court is in recess until October, but may decide before then whether to accept the case for review.

Trusting the Church After Abuse

John Howard Yoder is thought to have victimized nearly 100 women during his tenure at a Mennonite seminary in the ‘70s and ‘80s. He was forced out and later disciplined by the church, but without anyone revealing why he’d faced censure. He died in 1997. What makes Yoder’s abuse all the more grotesque is the theology that made him—and his church—famous: Pacifism.

“Out of both biblical conviction and years of experience, these women think seriously about discipleship, evangelism, intergenerational mentoring, and compassion. Their strength is evident, their commitment to Scripture robust, their joy in the gospel intoxicating, their anticipation of the consummation providing a lodestar to their lives and service. Although this is a book by women to foster “Word-filled women’s ministry,” much of it will be read with equal profit by men. I hope that some of those men will be pastors who in consequence reflect on what they can do encourage such ministry in their own churches.” D. A. It’s amazing how commonly people make claims that simply self-destruct. Taking some time to understand and recognize self-refuting statements will serve you well. And after you grasp them, take the time to share them with someone else.

The Shocking Weakness of God's Truth

Shame on our folly when we think we know better than God! God’s truth requires God’s art to serve God’s end. Any Christian explanation or defense of truth must have a life, a manner, and a tone that are shaped decisively by the central truths of the gospel. Like the Incarnation, our words are most effective when they are person to person and face to face. Like the Cross, our message must pay the cost of identification, so that from the inside out it may have a chance of succeeding in its high and worthy aim. And like our reliance on the Holy Spirit, it should always be evident that any power and persuasiveness in our communication comes from him and not us.

HEY REPUBLICANS: Carly Fiorina just showed you how to answer questions about abortion

Carly Fiorina just set the bar on how to answer questions about abortion from the media. In short, she did answer the question directly from CNN’s Jake Tapper on a Wisconsin law that bans abortion after 20 weeks without exception, but only AFTER she made sure to point out Hillary’s extremism on abortion that the media completely ignores, as well as hammering Planned Parenthood over the recent videos exposing them selling baby body parts from abortions.

Taqiyya, Imam Madhi, and the Iran deal

Following news of the nuclear deal with the United States, Iranians celebrated in the streets over what they viewed as a national victory. The victory’s significance was especially heightened as it took place during the most holy Muslim month of Ramadan. The celebration was marked by the relief they felt from three decades of isolation due to U.S. sanctions which began in 1987, followed by those of the U.N. and European Union which started in 2006. This deal would strengthen Iran’s economy and surely support them as a Shiite power in their long-known combat with their surrounding Sunni counterparts.

Where Does the Bible Say Extra-Marital Sex is Wrong?

I gotta say, this kind of feels like "click-bait" material. The author seems to try to draw the reader in by implying that while the Bible says that sex outside of marriage is wrong, it's somehow ambiguous or takes a theology degree and exegetical study to understand why it's not okay. "Some might argue that when the Bible condemns “fornication” or “sexual immorality” this includes sex before marriage. And maybe it does. But this needs to be shown and not just assumed." Fornication literally means: "sexual intercourse between people not married to each other." So no assumption is necessary.

The Definition That Will Not Die!

Dr. Craig: Well, you couldn't. This is really, again, just trying to redefine the terms, and what this philosopher points out is that our knowledge doesn't come in neat partitions like this. I would make the even more fundamental point that one is a theist or an atheist depending upon whether or not you believe that God exists or you believe that God does not exist. Your justification for that is quite independent of your belief state. You can have theists who just believe that God exists by faith without argument. They just believe that God exists. That's called a fideist. And you could have an atheist who just stubbornly believes that God does not exist even though he has no argument, no proof, he doesn't want anything to do with God so he believes God does not exist. Or you could have an atheist that is loaded with arguments against the existence of God to justify his belief. These people don't differ in their belief state, Kevin. They differ in the justification that they would offer for those belief states. So it is quite improper to try to distinguish their belief states based upon the degree of justification they have for those beliefs.

William Lane Craig and atheist Daniel Dennett discuss cosmology and fine-tuning

This audio records a part of the Greer-Heard debate in 2007, between prominent atheist Daniel Dennett and lame theistic evolutionist Alister McGrath. Craig was one of the respondents, and this was the best part of the event. It is a little bit advanced, but I have found that if you listen to things like this over and over with your friends and family, and then try to explain it to non-Christians, you’ll get it.

Ligonier Ministries

When we think of the law of God, the first thing that should come to mind is love—God’s love for us as fallen sinners, directing us to love Him, enjoy Him, and glorify Him. God’s law is a gracious gift to us, and it has three primary uses. First, the law functions as a teacher by showing us God’s perfect righteousness and our unrighteousness and sin, and it shows our danger of God’s judgment, leading us, by God’s grace, in repentance and faith to Jesus Christ who fulfilled all the righteous demands of God’s law (Rom. 3:20; 4:15; Gal. 3:19–24). Second, the law functions to restrain evil in all realms of society, preserving humanity and, thus, serving God’s overall plan of redemption for His covenant people (Deut. 19:16–21; 1 Tim. 1:8–11). Third, the law functions as a guide to righteous living for all men, and it directs us as God’s beloved children by teaching us what pleases our heavenly Father and fulfills the law of Christ (1 Cor. 9:21; 1 Thess. 4:1–8).
