Heartbreaking Video Shows How Technology Addiction Is Changing Childhood

Is a generation of kids missing out on a childhood of exploration and outdoor fun because of technology? The granola bar company Nature Valley has released this ad that asks three generations of people in several different families the same question: When you were a kid, what did you do for fun? While parents and grandparents talked about things like fishing, forests and baseball, many of today’s children discussed the hours they spent on mobile devices and playing video games. Sure, it’s a granola bar ad (and not exactly a scientific survey), but it’s still pretty a sobering commentary on how technology is changing the ways we spend our time.

Here’s the Trailer for Pixar’s New Movie ‘The Good Dinosaur’

Pixar has released a look at its new movie The Good Dinosaur that looks at the questions, “What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?” Along with some killer visuals, from the trailer, the movie—like most Pixar films—looks like it is really about friendship, this time, between a young cavekid and a friendly dinosaur. The Good Dinosaur hits theaters in November.

Justin Timberlake and Alfonso Ribeiro were among the participants at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament, and like any golfers, even celebrities occasionally hit a bad shot. It’s safe to assume that for Ribeiro, this never gets old.

Theology as Retrieval: Receiving the Past, Renewing the Church

The Myth of Doing Ministry to Get Rich

But if they have gotten rich by exploiting others, by setting exorbitant salaries, by merchandising their message for carnal gain, by living off the sacrificial gifts of the poor, then they will have to answer to God for every dime they have received. The Bible renounces ministry-related greed in the strongest possible terms (see, for example, Jeremiah 6:13-14; Titus 1:11; 2 Peter 2:15; Jude 11), and I would hate to be in the shoes of those who use the gospel to fleece God's flock of funds.

Patience Or Courage

Somewhere along the way, I developed a great love for leaders standing on the edge of their own personal cliff.  It might be the cliff of planting, moving to a new church, accepting a new role at your current church or moving overseas for the sake of the gospel.  For me, the particular cliff doesn’t matter as much as the moment.  Do you jump or not?

Changing the Culture One Apologist Mom at a Time

When I read the CT article, " The Apologist Mom ," I said, "This is exactly how I feel." I emailed Melissa Cain Travis and asked for permission to ask her all of my questions. Immediately after reading the CT article, I posted on Facebook saying "Who wants to be in a book club together?" I wanted to carve out time like the article on Melissa said. Someone replied to the post saying, "Hey, can you do it online because I can't make it but would love to join?" I put together a Facebook Page for the group of us, and within a couple of days we had 50 women from across the country and even internationally. I heard women say over and over again, "I've been looking for something like this. I don't have someone to talk to or share with about this." In the Facebook group, there are several women who will ask big questions. We're doing it together; we're processing together. I think for me, one of the biggest things was that I didn't want it to be about me. I really wanted to emphasize that we're learning together and on this journey together.

Governor Scott Walker signs ban on pain-capable abortions

While incest might be tricker as I am assuming in most cases it is a young girl trapped within her family and unable to get help in a speedy amount of time, raped women have 20 weeks, which is 4 months, to decide whether or not to carry their rapist’s child. A women can’t decide to get rid of a child within that amount of time? Is it really too much to ask of these victims to report on these monsters to get them locked up and if we are going to have legalize abortion, do it before the child (who is still human even if he/she is the product of rape) can feel pain?

Are You a Superstitious Calvinist?

Over time, I developed a prickly sensitivity toward her. I realize now I was being superstitious , ascribing to her a power she didn’t actually possess, forgetting God’s sovereignty over the words she spoke and his intention to work something good in my life through them. I didn’t need to fear what she said. As Calvin says, “there is no erratic power, or action, or motion in creatures, but . . . they are governed by God’s secret plan in such a way that nothing happens except what is knowingly and willingly decreed by him.” The fruit of my failure to live in light of this knowledge was fear.

God Will Give You More than You Can Handle

Trials come in all shapes and sizes, but they don’t come to show how much we can take or how we have it all together. Overwhelming suffering will come our way because we live in a broken world with broken people. And when it comes, let’s be clear ahead of time that we don’t have what it takes. God will give us more than we can handle—but not more than he can.

Adoption: What Joseph of Nazareth Can Teach Us About This Countercultural Choice

My husband and I adopted all four of our children. Our family’s racial profile checks off almost every affirmative action category. We have so many gene pools under one roof that we perplex even ourselves. Daily I homeschool one child with right-brained learning strengths and another with left-brain learning strengths. This means that by the end of the school day, I have no brain. God gave us two children when they were infants and two when they were 15 and 16 years old (and placed in our home five years apart). One son stood a foot taller than me when together we took our place before the judge to complete his adoption eight months after his 17th birthday. When we adopted teenagers out of the welfare state’s foster care program, one woman in my church community feared for the safety of my youngest children. I told her our adoption of older teenagers allows our younger children know that had we met them in foster care at 16, we too, with the Lord’s help, would have recognized them as our covenant children.

Taqiyya, Imam Madhi, and the Iran deal

Following news of the nuclear deal with the United States, Iranians celebrated in the streets over what they viewed as a national victory. The victory’s significance was especially heightened as it took place during the most holy Muslim month of Ramadan. The celebration was marked by the relief they felt from three decades of isolation due to U.S. sanctions which began in 1987, followed by those of the U.N. and European Union which started in 2006. This deal would strengthen Iran’s economy and surely support them as a Shiite power in their long-known combat with their surrounding Sunni counterparts.

New video: Planned Parenthood official haggles over baby body part prices, jokes ‘I want a Lamborghini’

Here is why a Petition for Rehearing must be filed.  Since the Supreme Court’s decision, it has been assumed that the “rule of law” requires not just your four states, but every State, to recognize the “fundamental right” of same sex couples to marry.  However, this assumption overlooks two critical factors:  (i) whether some of the Justices who participated in issuing that decision did so unlawfully; and (ii) the nature of the express limitations set out by Justice Kennedy in that decision.  Because of these two critical factors, we urge all of you as Attorneys General, or at least one of you, to file a Petition for Rehearing of this decision.  Additionally, we urge all elected officials in those four states to impress on you the need to file a Petition for Rehearing.  Although the Court’s decision purports to apply to all states — including the states that did not have an opportunity to present their arguments to the Court — only your four states can seek rehearing.

[…] The Scriptures call Christians to “take every thought captive to obey Christ”. In obedience to this command, Christians don’t naively receive the prevailing thought-culture or coldly reject the prevailing culture, but seek to lovingly redeem culture. These faith & culture links aim to help us redemptively consider timely cultural issues through the timeless lens of the gospel. Do not read these as word-for-word endorsements, but as links to help you think wisely and Biblically through complex issues. _______________________________________ If you have been on social media at all you realize that abortion has made its way back into the spotlight. Margaret Sanger’s legacy is not salvageable, so let’s not try.

I am sure there are some Black folks here in North Carolina who would like to get Ms. Sanger in a court of law for the misery that they suffered due to her Eugenic Program. One with the past year or two won in the courts, but the state legislature would not appropriate the funds to pay her for the sterilization performed on her…even without justification (she was not retarded…though why the people who are mentally challenged should be considered inferior and thus subjected to such indignity or even, as in German under the same Eugenic program, extermination/death. You all should note the name of the foundation which provided the money for Germany to institute the Eugenics program there, the Rockefeller Foundation, according to the web. I suppose they also had a hand in the American Eugenics program, not to consider them solely responsible. After all, the Supreme Court made at least one decision which gave rein to such evil.

The Distortions of Progressive Christians: How Religious Liberty is in Danger

Christ died at the hands of the state, and died for the sinners who put him to death. But his death was not the end of his agency, but its manifestation: he was killed by another, but willingly accepted it. He was a martyr, yes, whose body was ravaged at the hands of a government whose reach exceeded its grasp. But he was also a dissenter, who accepted and even welcomed the consequences of his refusal to live on the terms handed to him by Caesar. The life of Christ is the fountainhead and grounds of religious liberty for all people: Christ demonstrates the power of martyrdom without endorsing the idea that Christians ought climb up on the cross themselves, as some of the early Christians were tempted to do. He spent three years of his life calling others to repentance, exercising every opportunity and power the State granted him to call the State to repentance, before silently inverting the judgment of Pilate in his trial and crucifixion. In this, he demonstrates his fundamental freedom and power and the limits of the State, reminding Pilate that there are some realms which the State cannot—and ought not—reach.

Fighting Ebola for the Sake of the Gospel: The Story of Kent and Amber Brantly

My wife, Amber, and I, along with our two children, recently returned to Liberia — where I contracted Ebola one year ago — to visit friends and colleagues. We had the opportunity to say thank you and to express our deep gratitude to the many who cared for me in my illness, who fasted and prayed for me in their churches and who took action in official capacities to allow a patient sick with Ebola to be evacuated across the Atlantic Ocean. Though too short, it was a meaningful reunion. Coming back to the place we called home for a little less than a year brought many memories: familiar faces, familiar scenery, the memorable finger-snap handshake common across that part of the world. But there were also unfamiliar experiences: chlorinated hand-washing stations outside every business, church and public building; fewer embraces than one might have expected for such a joyful reunion; the missing faces of those who fell prey to the savage predator of Ebola.

5 Observations about Younger Southern Baptists

I’ve yet to hear of any churches that have split over eschatology also, however; I believe we are coming to a time in which eschatology is gaining more attention in serious academic studies in our seminaries and Bible Schools. What we are finding though is that dispensationalism cannot hold up against the backdrop of the Bible and the historical beliefs and greater experience of the Church as we have thus far read in our history. We are also finding that Jesus was very much eschatological in nature, in particular His Kingdom of God language which seems to depict an active role of the Church in engaging culture and bringing hope to people through social initiatives that lead to encounters that genuinely transform lives and people truly encounter Christ in a very distinctive and real manner that affects social good. This leads them to learn more about the character of Christ as relationships form with Christians and converts are formed. We’ve been so anti-Roman Catholic over works righteousness that we’ve all but missed the critical component for conversion, genuine interaction with people which the Church aides for no other reason than because Christ loves them and wants the best for them.

More Americans Oppose Obergefell v. Hodges than Support It

A new Associated Press-Gfk poll , released on July 18, reveals that the Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 decision to make same-sex marriage a constitutional right has not solved the deeper debate in this country, contrary to the media assertion that this is settled “law” and that everybody needs to get on board or be quiet.

Ligonier Ministries

CHBC is more than a hundred years old. It was the first church of any denomination in the northeast quarter of Washington, D.C. They had a long and healthy pastorate in the first half of the twentieth century, followed by eight shorter pastorates in the second half, many of them not so healthy. Dr. Carl F.H. Henry, a member of CHBC since the mid-1950s, wrote me in January 1993 to let me know of their need for a pastor. I first met Carl Henry some years earlier and had gotten to know him fairly well. He encouraged me to teach in a seminary, so I was initially surprised when I got his letter asking about my interest in pastoring the church on Capitol Hill. I then visited the church and through much prayer and conversation, both the church and I concluded that I should come to be their pastor. This was clear to me and my wife by the summer of 1993, and the congregation there voted to call me in December 1993. After a couple of weeks of prayer and reflection, I accepted the call. They understood that I wouldn’t be able to start serving until the second half of 1994. My family and I moved there in the middle part of 1994, and they graciously allowed me to simply attend throughout July, August, and September so that I could get used to what their culture was like.

Having the reality of God’s presence is not dependent on our being in a particular circumstance or place, but is only dependent on our determination to keep the Lord before us continually. Our problems arise when we refuse to place our trust in the reality of His presence. The experience the psalmist speaks of— “We will not fear, even though…” ( Psalm 46:2 )— will be ours once we are grounded on the truth of the reality of God’s presence, not just a simple awareness of it, but an understanding of the reality of it. Then we will exclaim, “He has been here all the time!” At critical moments in our lives it is necessary to ask God for guidance, but it should be unnecessary to be constantly saying, “Oh, Lord, direct me in this, and in that.” Of course He will, and in fact, He is doing it already! If our everyday decisions are not according to His will, He will press through them, bringing restraint to our spirit. Then we must be quiet and wait for the direction of His presence.

George Clooney Launches Online Initiative to Expose Those Who Profit from Conflicts in Africa

The site even allows users to share information anonymously that could lead to greater transparency into these networks. In a statement, Clooney said , “Real leverage for peace and human rights will come when the people who benefit from war will pay a price for the damage they cause.” Prendergast further explained, "The objective of The Sentry is to follow the money and deny those war profiteers the proceeds from their crimes.” On the site, the group says their goal is to “alter the incentives for funding or profiting from violence and mass atrocities” that have become commonplace in countries like South Sudan, Somalia, CAR and Democratic Republic of Congo.

3 Things Christians Should Consider in Light of Radical Islam

In the spirit of mutual respect and tolerance, Muslims should be free to build a masjid where they live, and Christians should defend their religious freedom to do so. At the same time, Christians should be free to plant churches in places like Bhutan, the Maldives, Brunei, and Saudi Arabia. No matter where we live or what religion we follow, we should not demand for ourselves that which we are unwilling to grant others—freedom from compulsion, freedom from discrimination on the basis of creed, and freedom of conscience.

The Problem of Evil | Reasonable Faith

a. The chief purpose of life is not happiness, but the knowledge of God. One reason that the problem of evil seems so puzzling is that we tend to think that if God exists, then His goal for human life is happiness in this world. God’s role is to provide comfortable environment for His human pets. But on the Christian view this is false. We are not God’s pets, and man’s end is not happiness in this world, but the knowledge of God, which will ultimately bring true and everlasting human fulfillment. Many evils occur in life which maybe utterly pointless with respect to the goal of producing human happiness in this world, but they may not be unjustified with respect to producing the knowledge of God. Innocent human suffering provides an occasion for deeper dependency and trust in God, either on the part of the sufferer or those around him. Of course, whether God's purpose is achieved through our suffering will depend on our response. Do we respond with anger and bitterness toward God, or do we turn to Him in faith for strength to endure?

Trapped Inside My Own Body for 12 Years

I grew up in South Africa, a normal, healthy child, until I came home from school one day in 1988, complaining of a sore throat. I was 12 years old. From that day on, my parents fought for a diagnosis from doctors who couldn’t explain what was happening to me. First I stopped eating. Then I stopped speaking. I lost all sense of time. The bonsai trees I had once tended grew dense as I lost mobility in my limbs. My body weakened as I stopped using it.

Are We on the ‘Wrong Side of History’?

Having said that, then there are some other things that need to be said. When certain trajectories begin to play out in history, sometimes they’ve been really frightfully wrong. Some scientific things—the study of the shape of the human head in order to determine who is retarded or not—I mean, that was universal science at the beginning of the 20th century. Or certain views of racism and Nazi genocide; that was all part of science and you don’t want to be on the wrong side of history—that was the argument that came out of the Marxists and came out of the Nazis. It’s very faddish; it’s very temporary.

Move Beyond Tweetable Bible Reading

When I first started reading the Bible, I started by randomly opening it up, placing my finger on whatever passage I had opened to, and starting to read from there. That lasted about three days before I gave up. I was jumping from place to place and had no rhythm or reason as to what I was reading. But then a buddy and I decided to read through the entire New Testament and keep one another accountable. In about four months, we had both read it through it and were ready to set a new goal.

5 Tips for Spotting Fake News

Be wary of stories linked to sites ending in “.ru” or “.co” or other unfamiliar domain names—especially if they are linked to a more reputable site, like NBC news, says Joel Kilpatrick, founder of Lark News , a Christian satire site. Those domains—as well as new ones like .market—are clues that a site may not be what it appears. Other sites may try to trick you by misspelling a respected news outlet’s name or leaving out a letter or two.

With Same-sex Marriage, What Happens to the Rights of Children? - Aleteia

Prior to the Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage, the court heard testimony from adult children who grew up in same-sex relationship households.  The Washington Post  ran a piece about this just before the SCOTUS ruling.  On one side were the advocates—those who claim to be living proof of the words Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote when the federal Defense of Marriage Act was struck down two years ago: that the law as it was “humiliat(ed) tens of thousands of children” being raised by gay parents.  As part of legal briefs in the  Obergefell  case, some of these adult children shared their experiences of feeling marginalized, less-than, and unwelcome because their families weren’t recognized as "real" families. Others who oppose gay marriage and were also raised by same-sex couples told their stories, too. One of them was Katy Faust who was raised by a gay mom in Portland, Oregon. Although Katy’s father remained involved in her life, when she began to reflect on her childhood and became a mother herself, she became convinced that no child should be deprived of a mother.

What We Get Wrong About Humility

I was completely abandoned by my husband after three (3) years of marriage just because another woman had a black magic spell on him and so he left me and the kids to go through severe pains and he moved in with the new woman and forgot all the love and happiness that we onced shared. The evil spell laid on my husband made him changed his approach and thoughts against me automatically and he never wanted to see me around him anymore or converse with him again. I contacted Dr Laco on his , and i explained to him the whole lot i was going through and he guaranteed me that he could put a white magic spell on him to remove the black magic that was laid on him and make him realize the love he had for me again and reunite us together eternally. I believed. And today I am tremendously happy now giving out this evidence and proof of Dr Laco spells and i am glad to let you all know that this spell caster have the power and supremacy to reunite and bring lovers back because i am now happy with my Ex-husband. And even till now he is still remorseful and regretful for the pain he made me and the kids go through.

Don’t Stress About Finding Your Calling

The reality that many of us face in this economy is that it might not be possible to earn a living doing the same thing one's entire life. Some of us might have to change careers and re-invent ourselves several times during our working lives. Does that mean that somehow we got it wrong or failed in our calling? I don't think so. More likely, it means that maybe none of those things are actually one's calling, but rather are simply God's provision for us to earn our material needs while we are about the business of doing what actually is our calling.

A Modern-Day Version of the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (VIDEO)

Seeing it acted out in modern times is very humbling. It may even help someone with making a decision in a similar situation. We are all human and we all make mistakes. There is not a better feeling in the world than being forgiven for something bad that you did. It is also important that we forgive others who encounter the same problem, and most of all, forgive ourselves. Forgive as God forgave you.

'People's Faces Burned Off, You Could Smell Burned Bodies:' Survivors Share Horror of ISIS' Attack in Turkey

Demonstrators hold a minute of silence for the victims during a protest against the bomb attack in the border town of Suruc, in central Istanbul, Turkey, July 20, 2015. A suspected Islamic State suicide bomber killed at least 28 people, mostly young students, in an attack on a Turkish town near the Syrian border on Monday. Television footage showed bodies lying beneath trees outside a cultural centre in the mostly Kurdish town of Suruc in southeastern Turkey, some 10 km (6 miles) from the Syrian town of Kobani where Kurdish fighters have been battling Islamic State. The blast tore through a group of mostly university-aged students from an activist group as they gathered to make a statement to the local press about a trip they were planning to help rebuild Kobani. The Hurriyet daily said the attacker was an 18-year old woman, but there was no confirmation.

The God of Peace

We are accustomed to reading of politicians and diplomats laboring earnestly to resolve international conflict through peace treaties. But, what tends to happen after an agreement is signed? It seems as though before the ink is even dry, there needs to be another summit to make another treaty because the former one has already been violated. Peace seems to be as elusive as it is desired.
