5 Ways to Incorporate Apologetics into Your Preaching

Every pastor should realize he is an apologist.  However, I know that sometimes pastors struggle with how to incorporate apologetics into their preaching.  The following are some ideas that have worked for me and that are easy to implement. 1. Discuss Authorship When preaching from a certain book of the Bible, take the time to explain to your congregation some of the reasons why the church believes the listed author actually wrote the book.  Or, if you are preaching, for example,  from Philippians, share facts (such as New Testament Scholar Daniel Wallace contends)   that   " among NT scholars it is virtually unanimous Paul wrote the book."  [1]   Also, if you are preaching from a book   in which authorship is unsure of or undecided, don't be afraid to explain that.  Then, when one of your parishioners hears an overblown claim such as the ones Bart Ehrman makes, they won't be blindsided, but informed and equipped to stand firm. The Christian Apologetics Study Bible is a great resource that can will equip you to argue for traditional authorship and prepare you to discuss some of the challenges offered by skeptics against traditional authorship.

18 Reasons Christian Leaders Should Be Apologists

1. Just as theology flows naturally from worship and confession, apologetics is the natural outcome of evangelism. At some point the Christian moves from proclaiming the Gospel to persuading the unbeliever; once this move takes place, the Christian has moved from evangelism to apologetics. In any case, the unbeliever will soon ask “why should I take anything you say seriously?” The Christian will have to state some reason for the hope that is within him; so his answer had better be good.

Genocide of Christians in Nigeria: An Insider Speaks Out

has been one of the few publications reporting on the worsening genocide of Christians in Nigeria. Since mainstream media seem uninterested, it’s crucial that Christian publications shine a klieg light on those horrors. We were approached by a former intelligence operative with over 20 years on the ground experience in the Islamic world. He wanted to give us the inside story of what’s happening in Nigeria and why. He asked that we not use his name.

Refuting 5 False Theories About Jesus

For the past few weeks I’ve been discussing this question with my high school theology class. Although most of my students have been brought up in the church, I know they’re going to face challenges to their faith when they go off to college. Many will hear jarring claims from classmates and professors about the “real” Jesus—claims contradictory to the church’s confession of Jesus as the risen Son of God.

Scientific Evidence for the Beginning of the Universe

The Big Bang theory of the french physicist and Catholic priest Lamaitre, proposes that this universe had a beginning. There is accumulating evidence which has led all astronomers to change over to this theory. Unlike steady state theory, which postlates an infinite time line, Big Bang theory proposes a beginning to space-time and energy. This beginning is called Singularity and in the singularity there is no space, time or energy. No laws of physics either existed. The singularity exploded and gave rise to space time and energy and the laws of nature also started and came into existence.

The Old Testament Is Embarrassing

2. The daughter of Pharaoh is the one who saves the life of Moses . In a twist of irony, Pharaoh’s daughter rescues Moses from certain death (Exodus 2:1-10). Why invent a story about the daughter of Pharaoh—who enslaved and tried to kill the Hebrew people—heroically rescuing the savior of Israel? This is similar to the New Testament story of Joseph of Arimathea. Many scholars trust the account of the burial of Jesus because it seems unlikely the Gospel authors would invent an honorable burial for Jesus from a member of the Sanhedrin who condemned him to death.

9
Reality and Radical Skepticism

There was a time when notions of the obvious were so simply eloquent that there was no need to meddle with its argumentation. In fact, there was no argumentation needed since the obvious was so, well obvious. Then came the postmodernist, deconstructionist ideologies that aimed to topple the towers of fundamental knowledge and question the nature of truth itself. Radical skepticism opened the door to the unknown and the unknown became all things to all people in all ways. From the perilous skepticism of Satan in the garden of Eden questioning God’s command, “ Has God really said? ” to the prevailing cultural redefinition of words and ideas in the latter half of the 20 th century onward, skepticism about the known world has found safe harbor in the arms of the culture that embraces it for the tolerance of its misguidedness.

10
What do skeptical ancient historians think of the earliest Christian creed?

That Jesus’ followers (and later Paul) had resurrection experiences is, in my judgment, a fact. What the reality was that gave rise to the experiences I do not know. “I do not regard deliberate fraud as a worthwhile explanation. Many of the people in these lists were to spend the rest of their lives proclaiming that they had seen the risen Lord, and several of them would die for their cause. Moreover, a calculated deception should have produced great unanimity. Instead, there seem to have been competitors: ‘I saw him first!’ ‘No! I did.’ Paul’s tradition that 500 people saw Jesus at the same time has led some people to suggest that Jesus’ followers suffered mass hysteria. But mass hysteria does not explain the other traditions.” “Finally we know that after his death his followers experienced what they described as the ‘resurrection’: the appearance of a living but transformed person who had actually died. They believed this, they lived it, and they died for it. (14)

12 Six Steps Out of Disappointment

Finally, rekindle eternal hope. While earthly hopes may have been dashed, at least for a time, the Christian still has a heavenly hope that no amount of earthly disappointment can take away. Indeed, earthly disappointment can help us to redirect our hopes towards that which is spiritual and eternal. There is a day, an eternal day in the not-to-distant future, when all disappointment will be taken away and when all things will not only be new but will remain new. Every possible source of disappointment will be removed, and all our hopes will be fulfilled (Revelation 21:1–8).

13 Science Requires God: The Foundation for Science (Science and Presuppositions) - Kindle edition by Mike Robinson. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

This easy to read book uses scientific and philosophical truths to prove that God must exist as the foundation for science. Robinson maintains that rejecting God is illogical, unscientific, and to requires blind faith. 'Science Requires God' demonstrates that the first cause, the Big Bang theory, genetic information, and the fine tuning of the universe presuppose and require God. Intended to provide assured proof and powerful evidence for God, this captivating volume evaluates modern science and demonstrates that the scientific method requires God. Robinson addresses such subjects as the origin of life; the DNA code and its origin; the nature and scope of unguided evolution; and the scope and boundaries of science. Fascinating and thoroughly argued, it is an illuminating look at the foundation of science: God. In 'Science Requires God,' distinguished author and Biblical scholar Mike A. Robinson demonstrates the surprising parallels between a variety of Biblical teachings and the findings of biology, cosmology, and quantum physics. 'Science Requires God' is a brilliant and wide-ranging discussion regarding vital topics that have divided science and religion—the grounds for science, the development of the cosmos, the origin of life, and the origin of humanity.

Six key passages on the Incarnation

With respect to Jesus’ ancestry, we should note that Matthew and Luke list different genealogies. While much has been written about this, it may help to consider that Matthew is writing to a predominantly Jewish audience and thus follows the line of Joseph (Jesus’ legal father) through David’s son Solomon. Meanwhile, Luke has a broader audience in mind, so he follows the line of Mary (Jesus’ blood relative) through David’s son Nathan.

15 The Good Father of the Spiritually Fatherless

If you follow Christ, you have a good Father, even if you didn’t have a good father. If you are led by the Spirit into confession, repentance, and obedience — like Hezekiah — you are a chosen and precious son of infinite love and strength. “You did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Romans 8:15). Before you were adopted, you were enslaved to fear, and for good reason. But now, your Father’s Spirit lives in you and casts out the fear of punishment (1 John 4:18).

The Hardest Question to Answer | Stand to Reason

But here’s why this question is the hardest to answer. When someone asks, “Why would God…?” they’re asking me to explain the mind of God. Unless God has given us insight into His thinking or rationale through His Word, it’s impossible to know for sure why He does something or thinks something. All I’m doing when I answer, then, is speculating. That’s what theologians, philosophers, and apologists are doing. That’s what you’re doing too.

What is the Most Powerful Evidence for the Christian Faith?

Since I have been working on this book people have been increasingly asking me, “What do you think is the most powerful evidence for the Christian faith?” While I do think the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus, the textual evidence for the reliability of the Bible, and the scientific evidence for a designer are persuasive, these are not the most powerful evidences.

Why Doesn’t God Make Himself More Obvious? | The Stream

Praise and worship help us! God is due our praise and worship, by virtue of him being our creator and our Father to the born again, by virtue of being God. Verses say to magnify the lord … We cannot make God larger, but he becomes larger to us when we magnify him, enlarges him in our consciousness by praise and worship. It is a spiritual exercise, which connects us strongly with the Spirit of God and his power. It ministers to us, washes and blesses, sometimes in waves as it goes. Corporate worship is truly awesome. One can start with their very real problem being the elephant and God’s promises seeming to be a peanut. But as we enlarge God in our experience through praise and worship, God becomes the elephant and the problem the peanut. That’s one of many benefits. Often during but often afterwards also, God will speak the answer or we return to find the issue resolved or just have a knowing, an assurance that it’s going to work out, that we can walk it out to victory. Christianity of this nature is lifestyle, a walk and the highest way to live this life on this earth.

Because it's a distinct thing. For hundreds of years, white people didn't want black people in their churches, so distinct identity and cultural markers developed. In an ideal future, we will all be one, but don't be blind to how our past built the present separation between us.

Music, Memory, and the Heart of a Child

At a recent family gathering my siblings and I were reminiscing about the songs we sang and loved in the ’80s. My 74-year-old father chimed in, singing a song we’d never before heard. His mother had taught it to him as a child. The song was Charles A. Miles’s “Wide, Wide as the Ocean,” written in 1914: Wide, wide as the ocean, high as the heaven above; Deep, deep as the deepest sea is my Savior’s love. I, though so unworthy, still am a child of his care; For his Word teaches me that his love reaches me everywhere. More than 60 years later, he still knew the song by heart. Learning By Heart I think about this memory often as I lead singing for the children’s ministry at our church. We gather all our kids ages 3 to 11 to sing Scripture songs, worship songs, and, more recently, the songs from The New City Catechism . I’m convinced that memorized truths can be building blocks for lives of Christian obedience. This memory-heart-life connection is everywhere around us. Take memorizing poetry, for example. Poet Brad Leithauser speaks to a different sort of knowing that comes through memorization: The best argument for verse memorization may be that it provides us with knowledge of a qualitatively and physiologically different variety: you take the poem inside you, into your brain chemistry if not your blood, and you know it at a deeper, bodily level than if you simply read it off a screen.

Analyzing a Famous Atheist's Claims About the Resurrection - Capturing Christianity

The Christian philosopher Alvin Plantinga has argued at length that Christian belief needn’t be supported by argument and evidence if it is to be warranted. This is because, if Christianity is true, beliefs about the truth of Christianity are not brought about by way of any natural process. They involve the work of the Holy Spirit. If Christianity is true, Christian belief will meet the conditions of warrant: They are produced by a belief producing process that is functioning properly in an appropriate environment according to a design plan successfully aimed at the production of true beliefs (for more on this, check out my 4 part series ).

I know, I know. Two Lewis books in one post. How terrible, right? But hear me out. Lewis’s book on grief really looks into the core emotion of human beings as he documents his pain as his wife is dying of cancer. Presidential Biographies: John Tyler #10

7. Martin Van Buren (8th President- original ranking- #7):  How do you analyze a man who was perhaps first and foremost a politician? Though that word has become something of a pejorative depending on its usage now, Van Buren didn’t play the system so much as he created one. He created what would develop into the modern day political party, taking what Andrew Jackson had started and running with it. He did so on a local and then national level, leveraging it to eventually become President of the United States. His continuation of Jackson’s policies towards Native groups caused enormous harm. His outright support of slavery may be baffling in light of his being remembered by contemporaries as a voracious abolitionist, but this change in policy was later in life and cynics may argue that it was a policy of convenience. He struggled as President to get much passed, largely due to his shouldering the blame for the economic crisis that greeted the beginning of his Presidency. His political skill helped create our modern political system, for better or ill. No matter what you think of him, he does at least give me the chance to use my new favorite phrase of this list: “He’s still a better President than Andrew Jackson.

What to Do When Christians Let You Down

Have you ever felt disappointed by someone you look up to in the faith? Whether it’s something as big as a pastor falling into sexual sin or as small as having your feelings hurt by a friend you trust, Christians will let you down. Jesus knew that kind of disappointment when his disciples failed him in his hour of need. “The story of the gospel is a story of disciples who fail a Savior who never fails,” Nancy Guthrie says. “When someone disappoints you, let it be an invitation to re-examine where your confidence lies.”

Three Good Reasons to Celebrate Your Christian Worldview | Cold Case Christianity

I had the great honor of speaking at the National Religious Broadcasters Apologetics Conference two weeks ago, along with Frank Turek , Abdu Murray , Alex McFarland , Stephen C. Troy Miller is the President and CEO of the network, and with the help of Arline Bell (the Director of Programming), the network has forged a new path for Christian programming. This is definitely not your parent’s Christian television network. NRB TV is filled with great Christian teaching and Case Making programs. I am delighted to be a small part of the line-up. At lunch, Troy shared the results of a recent viewer survey in which people who watch the NRB Network reported what they liked about it. High on their list were two responses: When using a single word to describe what they enjoy about the programming, many viewers said “orthodoxy”. People who watch NRB TV love the fact the programs argue for an orthodox, conservative view of Christianity.
