Seven Reasons You Owe Everything to Suffering

Every good gift and every perfect gift comes to us at the cost of suffering. Here are seven reasons to rejoice in it.

Forensic Faith by J. Warner Wallace - Book Review

In this book review post, I'll share a brief summary of the book and what I appreciate about his approach before offering some critique. Forensic Faith by J. Warner Wallace encourages you not to be an “accidental Christian,” but to know Christianity is evidentially true—moving from “accidental belief to evidential trust (p. 23).”

Logically Questioning Strange Ideas and Controversial Theories

As a Christian scholar and logic instructor, I often get asked about my thoughts on strange phenomena, controversial theories, and alternative conspiratorial explanations. Through the years I’ve frequently been asked about such unusual things as UFOs, the apparitions of Mary, near-death experiences, and a host of conspiracy theories such as those relating to the JFK assassination, denial of the Holocaust, the so-called moon-landing hoax, secret societies, and various speculative end-of-the-world scenarios.

Playground Apologetics: Apologetics Tactics for Busy Moms

Earlier this week I found myself caught in the morning line of cars leaving my neighborhood’s elementary school.  I live with my husband and 3-year-old son in a suburb of San Antonio. We’re in south Texas and our “Mayberry” (as many call it) is incredibly conservative – and not just politically.  We have a lot of churches. When I say “a lot,” I mean that we could put you in a blindfold at most any intersection in the city, give you a stone to throw, and you’d probably hit one. It’s Narnia, for sure.  Or a bubble.  Whatever you’d like to call it. So, you can imagine my surprise on Tuesday as I pulled up behind a big SUV boldly emblazoned with a lightbulb-shaped sticker and the words “skeptic kids.”  There went my bubble.

Pastoring in the Age of Celebrity

But churches can also benefit from exposure to different styles and perspectives on biblical teaching. Christians have always encouraged gifted teachers to use their skills to serve the body as a whole. Back in 2 Corinthians, readers find what might be the first reference to a celebrity pastor, though he remains notably nameless: “With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel” (8:18, ESV).

Five 'Fake News' Stories That People Believe about Early Christianity

Five “Fake News” Stories That People Believe about Early Christianity by Michael J. Kruger There’s been a lot of chatter about “fake news” in recent months.  Some stories, even though they have no basis in fact, are told so often, and with such conviction, that large numbers of people end up believing them anyway. And some of these fake news stories even dupe legitimate political figures who repeat the story without realizing it is false.  And, of course, once a mainstream political figure repeats a story then it becomes even more entrenched in the national psyche. While some of these fake news stories are rather harmless, others have become quite dangerous.  Most famous perhaps is the “ Pizza Gate ” incident in 2016 where a man shot up a pizza place thinking it was host to a child sex trafficking ring (thankfully, no one was hurt). Given this rash of “fake news,” I thought it might be interesting to observe that an analogous phenomenon can be seen in the study of early Christianity.  There is quite a bit of “fake news” out there regarding the person of Jesus, the origins of the church, or the development of the Bible .

A Scientist Discovers God

A Scientist Discovers God by Lee Strobel Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? — Isaiah 40:12 Allan Rex Sandage, the greatest observational cosmologist in the world — who deciphered the secrets of the stars, plumbed the mysteries of quasars, revealed the age of globular clusters, pinpointed the distances of remote galaxies, and quantified the universe’s expansion through his work at the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories — prepared to step onto the conference platform. Few scientists were as widely respected as this one-time protégé of legendary astronomer Edwin Hubble. Sandage had been showered with prestigious honors from the American Astronomical Society, the Swiss Physical Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Swedish Academy of Sciences, receiving astronomy’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. The New York Times dubbed him the “grand old man of cosmology.”1 As he approached the stage at this conference on science and religion, there was little doubt where he would sit. The discussion would be about the origin of the universe, and the panel would be divided among those scientists who believed in God and those who didn’t, with each faction sitting on its own side of the stage.

When the Church Celebrates Sex-Change Surgery | The Stream

If all of these topsy-turvy, PC sexually-related proclivities are somehow unalterable (from an evolutionary standpoint that is), thus right in the eyes of a “three-times Holy God” – including this groundswell movement of late, whose so-called “Christian” proponents have been bangin’ their same-sex drums for acceptability in the Church as well – then WHY in heaven’s name, have Christian heterosexuals been absolutely SILENT all this time, when they should be free to engage in their “straight” sexual desires like all the rest of those professing Christians?

The Great Prize in Christian Dating

For me, every first kiss was driven more by my own desires than by God’s desires for me. Every first kiss until I kissed my wife for the first time, seconds after asking her to be my wife. Before Faye, I had let what I wanted outweigh what I knew God wanted, and what I knew was best for the girl I was dating. I craved intimacy, and I knew I would find it in marriage. So, I punched “marriage” into Google Maps, jumped on the highway, and ignored the speed limits. Instead of waiting to get to my destination to enjoy emotional and physical intimacy, I pulled over and bought something quicker and cheaper on the side of the road.

Evidence for God: Messianic Prophecies

Hearing God's voice

Today, we need such an outpouring in our nations.  The Iranian church is now the fastest growing church in the world.  So many Iranians are coming to know Jesus.  20 years ago we met a leader of the underground church from Iran.  He shared with us that God had given him a vision for revival amongst his people in his lifetime. "I‘m determined as Iranians that we will learn from what will happen with the iron curtain.  Christians prayed that the iron curtain would come down but the church wasn’t ready for the wall to fall but what happened was that what flooded Eastern Europe with the worst excesses of the west.  I’m determined that will not happen with my people.  I’m digging a pit and I’m going to fill it with a million Bibles so that when revival comes, we will be ready with God’s word."  Recently we met him and asked, "How's the pit?"  He told us, "It is empty!"  Over one million Bibles are in the hands of new believers.  A burden that he saw and a prophecy given has been fulfilled!

Can that be Right? The Use of Old Testament Prophesy in the New Testament

It’s Christmas season and that means renewed attention on Messianic prophecy. Ah, the familiar sounds of “a virgin shall give birth,” “the government shall be upon his shoulders,” and good ole “Bethlehem Ephrathah.” It makes a churchgoer feel all warm and cuddly inside.

Should I Be Friends with My Ex?

I realized then that being “just friends” was not helping me move forward. I was living in what I hoped would happen, instead of living in the present. With all the courage I could muster, I asked my former boyfriend to stop calling me, stop emailing me, and stop asking to see me. It simply was too difficult to move forward when I was always hoping that we would get back together. Taking this big step forward, and all the pain that came with it, caused me to pore over my Bible like never before. I was searching for hope in the midst of my bleeding heart. The Psalms were like a soothing medicine to my aching soul:

Pursuing God intellectually: Being honest about our questions

Jesus identified the greatest commandment as loving God with our all of who we are, and Jesus specifically included loving God with our minds. But what does this mean? I suggested that we understand this as pursuing God intellectually in a way that is consonant with other relational pursuits. When we love someone, we want to know things. We are intellectually curious about what makes them tick.

The Real Reason We Don't Read Our Bibles

Through my work with the Christian Standard Bible , I came across some stats about Bible reading: 88 percent of American households own a Bible, but only 37 percent of people read it once a week or more. People said they don’t read their Bibles because they don’t have enough time, and they struggle to understand the words.

Why People Believe All Roads Lead to Heaven

When I was a freshman in high school, I tried out for the varsity basketball team. On the first day of tryouts, the coach ran a scrimmage, periodically sending players into the game to see how they played. When my turn came, I intercepted a pass on the very first play. Then I took the ball the length of the court, skyed over every other player and made the prettiest layup you ever saw.

A Broken, Dying World: Why Spiritual Hunger Is Real and How We Can Begin to Meet People Where They Are

Sure, we can observe wars and rumors of wars and horrible atrocities in our world, but several things must be noted when we see these things. First, while the sorrows of this world are noteworthy, they are exceptions to the overwhelming demonstrations of the constancy of God’s grace, rather than the rule. Second, they testify to the fact that the people behind these atrocities are messed up and in need of God and, even in such a broken world, He is beckoning us back to Him. And third, they reveal that we long for something better and our hearts are restless.

Lay Aside the Weight of “Not Feeling Like It”

So today, don’t let “not feeling like it” reign as lord (Romans 6:12). Rather, through it see your Father pointing you to the reward he has planned for all who endure to the end (Matthew 24:13). Let it remind you that his call is not to indulgence but endurance.

The American Church Has a Better Reputation Than Higher Ed or the Media

“For the fourth year in a row—in a nation where religion is an important part of life for three-fourths of the population—less than half of Americans think religious leaders have high ethical standards,” Gallup said. “Meanwhile, two groups of professionals linked to the bitter political battles of 2016—college teachers and journalists—are at or near their all-time lows, with views split along partisan lines.”

Soul Care for Exhausted Young Mothers

Never lose sight, Beth, never lose sight of the fact that your walk with God is as essential for the good of your child as is your milk or the formula that you may be giving him. Children do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). If you lose your communion with God, you will lose not only a source of strength for the sake of parenting, but you will lose the very thing you want most to impart to this child.

When you hold on to resentment, you allow people from your past to continue to hurt you today. And that’s not smart! The people in your past are past. They cannot continue to hurt you unless you choose to hold on to the hurt. Instead, let go of your need to get even or make things fair. Leave it up to God.

Sean McDowell : Awana is an international ministry that focuses on discipling children and teens. Most people recognize Awana from their children’s Bible memory programs (which I did as a kid). ‘The Beguiled’ Reveals the Cracks in Our Imagined Selves

Director and screenwriter Sofia Coppola’s dedication to sustaining a kind of visual enchantment is clear to the audience at once. So, too, is Coppola’s canny use of familiar character types to tell a story that hinges on hard-to-detect motives that lie within, like desire and dread. Coppola’s characters act on honorable impulses and risk trusting one another in the name of Christian virtues like charity, hospitality, mercy, and gratitude. Slowly, however, a space widens between the intentions they profess and the temptations which also shape their responses to one another. The theme of a duality between whom we tell ourselves we are and what our actions testify about us resonates throughout the narrative.

Good Lovemaking Is About God

John explained to his friends that by continually neglecting God’s good design for sex, they were settling for flashes of sinful passion instead of the valuable white-hot coals of enduring intimacy. God designed sex to be best enjoyed when it is based on something other than appearance or performance. He bases it on committed love that reflects the unending love he has for all those who trust in Christ.

Christ’s Transfiguration Is a Sneak Preview of Our Future

The apostle Paul sheds a bit more light on the situation. In 2 Corinthians 3:18, he says all who receive the Spirit are enabled not only to see the glory of the Lord but also to receive that glory as we are “transfigured” into the image of Christ (your Bible might say “transformed,” which works too, but it is the same word that Matthew and Mark use to describe what happened to Jesus on the mountain). How does this happen, exactly? First, Paul says, getting the Spirit means getting a new heart and having the Spirit breathe new life into us—it’s what Paul calls the “new creation” (5:17). Second, there’s no participating in the new creation without also becoming a minister of the “new covenant” (3:6). If the light of the gospel has shone in our hearts, we are responsible to make that light as visible as possible to those around us. Paul gives a couple of ways we do this.

Though You Do Not See Him, You Love Him

And yet, not all who saw the resurrected Jesus actually believed in him. In fact, Matthew tells us that there were some who doubted even as they looked upon the post-resurrected Jesus as he stood on the mountain in Galilee (Matthew 28:17). But if some of those who actually saw the risen Christ with their own eyes failed to believe, what hope do we have? We haven’t touched him like Thomas (John 20:27), walked with him like Cleopas (Luke 24:31), or ate fish with him like John (John 21:13). It would, therefore, seem that we are at an incredible disadvantage compared to those who witnessed the resurrected Jesus. The New Testament disagrees. In fact, Jesus said that it was to our advantage that he left (John 16:7). How can that be?

A Permanent Birth by Steven Lawson | July 11, 2017

Ironically, we can become so afraid of losing something that we no longer fully enjoy having it. This is true in both everyday affairs and in spiritual matters. People will sometimes keep a prized possession out of harm’s way to such an extent that they no longer use it or enjoy it. Fortunately, Christians can rejoice in the knowledge that the forgiveness of sins, their relationship with God, and their eternal hope can never be taken away. Few truths are as beautiful as God’s promise that those who are born again receive a permanent birth and can never lose their status as His sons and daughters.

Book Preview: Unbelievable? by Justin Brierley

Yet recently, good conversations about faith have been increasingly squeezed out of the public sphere. Seeking to reopen the debate, Justin Brierley began to invite atheists, sceptics and non-believers onto Premier Christian Radio to hear the best arguments for and against the Christian faith. Now, over ten years later, Unbelievable?continues to captivate thousands of listeners and has spawned its own annual conference. But how has ten years in the atheist-argument-firing line affected the presenter’s faith? Reflecting on conversations with Richard Dawkins, Derren Brown and many more, Justin explains why he still finds Christianity the most compelling explanation for life, the universe and everything. And why, regardless of belief or background, we should all welcome the conversation.
