SES Conference

Welcome to the 2015 annual National Conference on Christian Apologetics (NCCA). Every year, Southern Evangelical Seminary hosts one of the largest apologetics events in the country. Join us on October 16-17, as we discuss this years theme, "Ideas Have Consequences."  Every consequence, whether good or bad, ultimately begins with an idea. This year's conference will equip Christians to engage in today's most prevalent ideas, encouraging attendees to speak words of grace, so they may "know how...to answer each person" (Colossians 4:6). Help us spread the word by sharing your thoughts on our facebook page --

WORLD | Answering difficult questions on sexuality and salvation | Rosaria Butterfield | July 11, 2015

The 19th Century category of sexual orientation reflects Romanticism’s claim on epistemology, redefining men and women from people who are made in God’s image with souls that will last forever to people whose sexual drives and gender identifications define them and liberate them and set them apart. Indeed, while the Christian maintains that image-bearing is what sets apart humans from animals, the 19th Century ushered in a new measure of man, one for whom sexuality and sexual pleasure became a defining marker. Thus, “sexual orientation” is what we call a neologism, and it creates fictional identities that rob people of their true one: male and female image-bearers. And sexual orientation is a world that extends the definition of sexuality beyond its biblical confines. Biblically speaking, sexuality is always teleological—that is, sexual desire implies a desired object and sexual practice implies a necessary outcome. Because the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) definition of sexual orientation includes nonsexual affection, this re-maps personhood in a way that God does not.

The 5 People You Should Never Marry

The language of this post tells a lot about where we are as a culture, how far we've deviated from 1950s and 60s culture. Moreover, what the church has morphed into. "Relationships," "healing," "spiritual abuse," these are words we never heard back then. The intensity and frequency of their use today and words like them say we are firmly entrenched in a feminine society and the culture of therapy. The rapid ascendance of homosexuality as "good," and the power of the PC enforcers supports this assessment. Once masculine and able to take on two fascist powers at the same time, we are now feminized and in need of the wisdom of pop psychology to get us through our years. It reminds me of something Aristotle once said:"Masculine republics give way to feminine democracies, and feminine democracies give way to tyranny." We made the turn to femininity in the 1960s. Are we now making the turn to the next phase? The negative votes this comment gets may just prove I'm right.

No, God Is Not Disappointed in You

Hi Drew, I'm glad you liked the article, and I thank you for the comment! I very much agree that God uses other people in our lives to grow and heal us. As a matter of fact, I'm a Christian counselor myself, so I lean wholeheartedly on the Holy Spirit leading me when I speak with clients. Perhaps I should have left out the word, "only." What I meant by the phrase, is that God is the source of our transformation and our greatest help. Also, that He offers us the help that we don't have in ourselves, so we turn to Him in awareness that He (rather than we) is the one to do what we can't. And when we get significant help from others, He is the influence behind it. Thanks for sharing though, as I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on getting outside support from God's family, since He truly wants us to be blessed in that capacity.

You May Have Heard That The Divorce Rate In The Church Is 50%... Get Ready To Be Shocked.

This is a game-changer. Talk about “an old wives’ tale.” You’ve heard it said that 1) 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce; 2) most marriages that do happen to make it are, nonetheless, unhappy, and 3) Christians are just as likely to divorce as non-believers.

9 ‘Mistakes’ Every Twentysomething is Allowed to Make

You’re never going to be fully ready for marriage. So it’s OK to get married when you don’t have enough money or don’t live in the best circumstances. Love isn’t about this stuff anyways. The love that comes with marriage is about commitment and sacrifice, and if you feel committed enough to make marriage work when money gets tight, then go for it. Money should have no hold on the heart that’s committed, so stop pretending like it should.

Do Our Bodies Matter to Our Spiritual Lives?

Unfortunately, Jason, our individual choices are never really that "individual." I don’t always eat into the forms of justice and goodness we are called to, but I also know that my choices have wider consequences. For instance, conventional produce is in all likelihood being grown using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that are wrecking havoc on the environment and our bodies. The labor used to pick and pack that produce was likely migrant labor that is being exploited and paid unfairly. Where is the good news in that? Gospel truth is truth that brings us a picture of God’s kingdom of justice and love and it is in that kingdom that we can really put on the easy yoke. We should make the choices in our lives that help bring that kingdom about in the world. Of course, many aren’t afforded the opportunity to eat good food because of systemic evil. Whether it’s the price or the availability, its unfortunate that food grown in a way that honors people and the creation isn’t as widely available as food that damages people and the creation. We should mourn that reality and work to change the food system.

God's Not Dead: God's Not Dead: The Bible is the Word of the Lord

Christ’s death on the cross was foretold before that form of execution had even been invented by Persia. Psalm 22:1-16 announces the crucifixion hundreds of years before it happened: “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me... But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. All who see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip; they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD; let Him deliver him; let Him rescue him, since He delights in him! I am poured out like water, and all my bones are spread apart; my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels and You have brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have circled around me; the band of spoilers have hemmed me in, they have pierced my hands and my feet.”

The Shalom of Neurochemistry

Prior to becoming a counselor in a program that treats domestic violence offenders, I hadn’t thought much about oxytocin, the hormone often referred to as “the trust molecule.” It is a neurochemical often associated with the reproductive cycle, and its synthetic form, pitocin, is used to induce labor. Flooding the brain during sex, childbirth, and breastfeeding, it creates a sense of calm and security, promoting bonds in the family unit. Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus, and it’s then released by the pituitary gland when we experience touch or intimacy. Most of us experience its impact throughout the day, triggered by a variety of human experiences.

Method’s facility will not only be good for the environment, but it will bring around 100 manufacturing jobs to South Chicago and provide the city with local produce.

Does God Really Have a ‘Special’ Relationship with America?

This question of a special relationship, all comes down to what one means. There are some very heinous ways that one can see such a 'special' relationship. But let me propose one that I think is compatible with the citizenship that transcends all national boundaries. It is this, every nation has a Christian history and a special story. The American story is one rooted in the Christian vision of a people who sought to follow the Lord in all they did and enshrined that desire in their public documents (often, and progressively, reflecting toleration of religious difference). Not every people have such an explicit heritage that attempts, however poorly, to give praise to the Father of lights and prioritize freedom. So it is right to honor the fathers and mothers, and acknowledge their unique commitments and story for it is, in some way, our story. We may not be able to say exactly what God has always thought about our national ancestors, but we can say what they have said and promised to God. And while it should not be a matter of pretentious national boasting (as painfully it too often is, or alternatively, historical denial), it can be a matter for humble reflection and honor--look, see, and remember, for the kingdom does not destroy history or nations but redeems them for the One that is in all and greater than all.

‘A.D.: The Bible Continues’ Cancelled by NBC; Could Come Back Online

A.D.: The Bible Continues may have been cancelled by NBC, but the series could live on . Recently, executives at NBC opted not to bring the event series back for a second season after its initially strong ratings slowed down. But, according to Variety , Roma Downey and Mark Burnett—the husband and wife team who produce the show—still may have plans for the A.D. franchise. The duo have reportedly envisioned an online network that would be built around faith-based programming, like The Bible miniseries and A.D. If that’s the case, more episodes could be coming. As of now, the channel is gearing up for a late-2016 or early-2017 launch.

Like most popular things on the internet, the rainbow grew virally, and you could feel the tug to join in as close friends and coworkers, friends from high school and cousins on your dad’s side, actors and multinational corporations converged to celebrate the court’s decision. And if you, like me, were disappointed by the ruling, you found social media to be an increasingly contested space between these modified avatars and the disparaging responses from some Christians, and you wondered how to respond, or even if you should. What is the opposite of a rainbow?

Guest Post: How the Gospel ended My Same Sex Relationship - Borrowed Light

This is such a damaging point of view. Doesn’t our God, being loving and forgiving, love us the way we are? Yes, God is worth sacrifices but would he, who created us as he wanted us to be, want us to love and accept ourselves the way he made us. I’m not discrediting the author’s struggle and sacrifice. If she felt this is what God called her to do, then fine and good on her for doing what she felt compelled to do. But I know good, God loving Christians who are gay who don’t feel their relationship with God is compromised. Teaching that we are wrong when this is how we are born is damaging to self image. Isn’t hating and rebelling against the way God made us tantamount to hating and rebelling against God? This may be one homosexual Christian’s story, it it is not everyone’s. The passages that strictly forbid homosexuality are bookended by those that forbid wearing clothes made of more than one cloth and bidding women to marry their rapists. Not even the most fundamental extremists would argue that either of those ideas should be practiced. The passages referenced here are interpreted to be condemning homosexuality.

9 Things You Should Know About the Confederate Flag Controversy

1. What is often called the “Confederate flag” was never the official flag of the Confederate States of America (CSA). It was also not called the “Stars and Bars”—that was the name of the first national flag of the CSA. The flag is properly known as “the battle flag of the Virginia army,” though it was sometimes called “Beauregard's flag” or “the Virginia battle flag.” Today, it is most commonly called the “Battle Flag.”

Sci Fi, Free Will, and the Problem of Evil

In teaching every semester on why God allows evil, I’ve learned that many Christians do not understand the nature or value of free will. Sci-fi books, movies, and television programs frequently feature free will as a major theme and thus help illumine this abstract topic.

Dylann Roof Should Not Have Been Able to Buy a Gun

The FBI said today that Dylann Roof, the man accused of killing nine congregants at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church last month, should not have been able to buy a gun. Back in February, Roof was arrested and charged with possessing a controlled substance, then later indicted by a grand jury. And federal law prohibits gun sales to anyone under indictment for a felony.

Hymns We Should Sing More Often: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

There are many hymns I do know from growing up in an Assembly of God church. However, some of the very old ones like this one, I am not familiar with. But, during the last 10 years or so, I have bought old hymnals at flea markets, etc. I use them often as a devotional and find them to be so precious. They teach, uplift, bring comfort, point me to the Cross, tell a story…………… Of course, I am 61 years old. Maybe if I was 31 and in this present culture I would not see the that the hymns as a precious treasure. Maybe that is why I love it when a band updates some of the precious hymns. Re-presenting them to the young adults that they can relate to. Thank you for your post.

45
On the Wrong Side of God, Evolution and Humanity

The major religious books state just the opposite. So does the Natural Law derived from God's nature. Thomas Jefferson called this "Nature's Law" from which we get "self-evident truths" and the fact that people "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights." Same sex marriage is not one of them. In fact, Jefferson and other politically incorrect Founding Founders called homosexual acts "crimes against nature" because such acts go against the natural design of the body and frustrate the goal of perpetuating humanity. This observation is not based on bigotry but on biology. (It's ironic that our Founding Fathers were more apt to follow science than today's secular left who ignore science when they insist that biological gender is changeable and sexual behavior is not. The exact opposite is true!)

Tim McGrew lectures on undesigned coincidences in the Bible

Undesigned coincidences in the Gospels … is an argument that was well-known in the nineteenth century but has, for no really clear reason, simply been forgotten as time has gone on. It is a cumulative case argument that the Gospels reflect, to an important extent, independent knowledge of actual events. Please note that this argument is quite independent of one’s preferred answer to the synoptic question. That is to say, even if, e.g., Mark was the first Gospel and others had access to Mark and show signs of literary dependence on Mark, the argument from undesigned coincidences provides evidence for independent knowledge of real events among the Gospel writers. There are many more of such coincidences beyond those given in the talk.

Would Jesus Say "I'm Spiritual, But Not Religious?"

“At no place have Christians been more insensitive to Judaism that when it comes to what Jesus believes and teaches about God. In particular, the concept that Jesus was the first to teach about God as Abba and that this innovation revealed that Jesus thought of God in terms of love while Jews thought of God in terms of holiness, wrath, and distance are intolerably inaccurate in the realm of historical study and, to be quite frank, simple pieces of bad polemics. The God of Jesus was the God of Israel, and there is nothing in Jesus’ vision of God that is not formed in the Bible he inherited from his ancestors and learned from his father and mother” (7) “Countless Christians repeat the Lord’s Prayer. When Jesus urged His followers to “hallow” or “sanctify” the Name of God (Matt 6:9), many are unaware of what that may have meant in Jesus’ day- in part, because Christianity has lost sight of God’s awesome splendorous holiness. A good reading of Amos 2:6-8 discusses this issue. “Reverencing the Name of God” is not just how Israel speaks of God-that it does not take the Name of God in vain when it utters oaths or when someone stubs a toe or hits a finger with an instrument -but that God’s Name is profaned when Israel lives outside the covenant and by defiling the name of God in it’s behavior” (Jer 34:15-46; Ezek.
