I was pleased to hear Dr.Sproul Jr. and really impressed by his message. I really look for more Christians to proclaim such depth of the Word and call us to live very devoted and dedicated lives as saints and servants of the most high. I waited all week to see if I would get more finances while the series was being offered, I am sad to say I did not get more than I gave, but I really did not want this message to slip by. Thanks so much. The heart behind the message is the LORD's.stay strong.

Why Are So Many Christians Afraid of Hollywood Bible Movies?

I agree with the aspect of enjoying the art that a producer makes out of a movie. However, when it comes to the bible - the Word of God - I do not think an artist have 100% freedom to mold it to whatever they believe it to be. The first reason is because is God's word. Is not just any book. An artist who is trying to present the word of God to the world should not do so with contempt. That said, it doesn't mean they can't be artistic. For example, you can be very artistic and put great designs on a cube to make it look cool, or pretty, or futuristic, etc. Art can give many different tastes to that cube. However, when an artist begins to distort the fundamental definition of the cube, such as adding a cylinder on top of the cube, and presents his/her finished product to the public and says this is the truth, this is what a "real" cube looks like, then issues arise. Whatever designs the artist chooses to put on the cube, in the end it still needs to have 6 identical square sides for it to be a cube. That fundamental foundation cannot be changed. Is the same with these movies based on bible stories.

The Foundation of Christian Joy

In 1993, my wife and I were involved in an historic train wreck. The crash of the Sunset Limited into an inlet from Mobile Bay killed more passengers than any Amtrak accident in history. We survived that eerie accident but not without ongoing trauma. The wreck left my wife with an ongoing anxiety about being able to sleep on a train at night. The wreck left me with a back injury that took fifteen years of treatment and therapy to overcome. Nevertheless, with these scars from the trauma we both learned a profound lesson about the providence of God. Clearly, God’s providence in this case for us was one of benign benevolence. It also illustrated to us an unforgettable sense of the tender mercies of God. In as much as we are convinced that God’s providence is an expression of His absolute sovereignty over all things, I would think that a logical conclusion from such a conviction would be the end of all anxiety.

5 Is the Account of Joseph Smith’s First Vision Reliable? | Cold Case Christianity

Joseph Was On Trial in 1826 At the age of 20, Joseph Smith was on trial for divination in South Bainbridge, New York. The 1826 Bainbridge Court Records of Judge Albert Nealy indicate Joseph was being tried as a “glass looker” (using a “seer stone” to discover buried gold in the ground) on March 20th, 1826. Joseph was found guilty of a misdemeanor in violation of the New York State vagrancy law because he was pretending to locate lost treasures with this seer stone placed in a hat (interestingly, this is the same method he later said he used to translate the Book of Mormon). The court records also indicate Joseph used other occult rituals to help him locate the treasures, including the sprinkling of animal blood to break the enchantment thought to guard the treasure. Because Joseph was a minor, he was allowed to leave the county rather than face jail time.

Are Science and God Incompatible?

A barrage of recent books, newspaper and magazine articles, videos, public lectures, and even a widely-viewed documentary will have you think that science has by now disproved the existence of God. And some of the people making these claims are well-known scientists, such as the British biologist Richard Dawkins, who has made a career of arguing that modern science makes religion obsolete. But in fact, these pronouncements are premature, and the last time that science won decisively against religion was as far back as the 19th century.

9 How to Interpret Your Bible Correctly (Part 1) - Christian Research Institute

As a student of the Bible, a member of a Sunday school class, or as one who discusses the Bible with others, chances are you have encountered people who interpret various Bible passages differently than you do. If you are an orthodox Christian, you would probably not be surprised to discover that Jehovah’s Witnesses interpret many Bible passages differently from what you believe and what you have been taught. If you are a Protestant, you would probably not be surprised to discover that Protestants and Catholics differ in their understanding of the meaning of many Bible passages. You probably also would not be surprised that Protestant denominations differ on many passages. In fact, interpretations often differ among people in the same congregation, or the same Sunday school class, or even in the same family. Questions and debates about what various passages mean are a common occurrence within groups of people who, for all practical purposes, seem to believe and think the same. How can these different interpretations be explained?

Secularism and the Nature of Evil

It isn’t healthy to dwell on the diabolical or to trivialise the demonic, so we should not mourn the demise of the ghost story. Yet the malevolence that haunted Bram Stoker or MR James represented something very real, something every human being can be tempted to. Perhaps, then, the appeal of such ghost stories did not pass away because our world lost faith in the supernatural. After all, the secular age hungers for fantasy like any other. Rather, the ghost story died because we no longer believe in absolute good and absolute evil; we abandoned a moral universe…

11 Abortion as Injustice Interview – Part 2 - Stand to Reason Blog

First, they can commit to not have an abortion themselves. Too many people who are attitudinally pro-life aren’t behaviorally pro-life when it matters most. They think their situation is different and, when in a bind, succumb to the pressure to abort. Unfortunately, the data shows many Christians are having abortions. This needs to stop. Second, they can learn the art of pro-life persuasion so they can change minds on abortion when the conversation comes up. All they need is some basic skills to help them understand the science and some simple philosophical distinctions. The evidence is on our side so there’s no excuse. Third, they can volunteer for a pro-life organization or pregnancy resource center. There are many non-profit, pro-life organizations that work hard at saving lives. Anyone can call them and ask how they can help by volunteering their time. Also, they can volunteer at a pregnancy resource center. These centers come alongside women who are abortion minded and serve them when they need help the most. Fourth, they can financially support pro-life speakers, activists, and organizations.

SI exclusive: LeBron James explains his return to Cleveland Cavaliers

To make the move I needed the support of my wife and my mom, who can be very tough. The letter from Dan Gilbert, the booing of the Cleveland fans, the jerseys being burned -- seeing all that was hard for them. My emotions were more mixed. It was easy to say, “OK, I don’t want to deal with these people ever again.” But then you think about the other side. What if I were a kid who looked up to an athlete, and that athlete made me want to do better in my own life, and then he left? How would I react? I’ve met with Dan, face-to-face, man-to-man. We’ve talked it out. Everybody makes mistakes. I’ve made mistakes as well. Who am I to hold a grudge?

Laverne Cox Is the First Transgender Person Nominated for an Emmy

For me personally, I am an individual who consumes mainstream culture. I watch a lot of television. I go to mainstream films. And I want to see myself. I want to turn on the television and see people who look like me who have similar experiences that I have. And I think that trans people want and deserve that; everybody wants and deserves that. We should have representations that humanize our experiences and tell the diversity and the complexity of our experiences. I have mainstream sensibilities. Just because I’m black and trans does not mean I’m somehow not mainstream and not consuming the same culture everyone else is consuming. For so long we haven’t had that kind of validation of our experiences in mainstream culture, particularly as black trans women — but as trans people in general…

A Booby Trap in the Christian Budget

Of course this will mean that we save, spend, and give in ways that say he is our Treasure. But in all our strategizing about how to use our money “biblically,” may we not fall in love with the enemy we think we’ve beaten with our budgets. Let’s not let him quietly master us from the comfort of our self-righteous discipline, self-control, and generosity. “Keep your life free from love of money,” not necessarily by keeping your life free from money, but by filling it more and more with the real, satisfying, lasting presence and work of Jesus (Hebrews 13:5).

Grace to You

Everyone’s religion, whether true or false, will be tried one day. That test will determine with great finality who are the wheat and who are the tares—in other words, the unredeemed will be revealed from the redeemed. When the storm of final test comes, those whose houses are on the bedrock of Jesus Christ and His Word will be spared “from the wrath to come” (1 Thess. 1:10). However, those whose houses are on the sand will not be spared, but, like the goats in Jesus’ prophecy of the end times, “will go away into eternal punishment” (Matt. 25:46; cf. Ex. 12:23; Rev. 20:12, 15).

19
Forget Regret

One possibility is that we believe a lie. We believe that to forget our past sins or mistakes (whether real or imaginary) would be to suggest that they were not significant or serious. To forget would be like laughing at the graveside, a failure to pay our respects. So each regret becomes a shrine before which we endlessly bow, like somber priests offering dutiful sacrifices, and knowing that there must never be an end to our sadness, because no amount of sacrificial sorrow can truly do justice to the mistakes we’ve made.

Do Something Awesome: Build a Family

Family-building is big, glorious and immensely self-sacrificial. It is a great undertaking that calls for what I call "Gospel risk." We exchange our sin and selfishness and small dreams for something harder and better and God-honoring. This is the way to happiness, in truth: being like the faithful stewards of the Parable of the Talents who, while their master was gone, exemplified faithfulness and courage (see Matthew 25:14-30 ).

23
Part 2: 12 principles to help you navigate the adoption process

Be a salt-and-light Christian. When you engage in adoption, instantly you have an option to share the gospel, which in a peculiar way will require of you to be seasoned, graceful and kind. Jesus said to be “wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove.” Since it is an unnatural process (a mom and dad giving up their child) everyone involved is typically on edge. Picture the wedding day of a new bride times 10. Your sphere of influence will be massive – caseworkers, the agency, the home study, the birth parents and future grandparents and then add friends visiting the birth mother and family in the hospital. Most important, we must display the gospel in all of its self-denying grandeur. Remember this will require of you to die to yourself daily.

5 Ways Married Men Can Act Like Adults Around Women (Single or Not)

You are treading dangerous waters, Luke. In fact, you are bringing harm to the Gospel of the Good News. It’s not only single women, but married women too, that are dangerous for men to work, and be, around without the presence of their wives. Many affairs would be prevented if women obeyed God’s precepts, that are in place for our good, and were workers in their own homes. No-fault divorce would not be so rampant, children would be safer and healthier, and men could be paid enough to provide financially for their families. Abortions would be fewer. You are not being realistic or mature with the words you are delivering. Women and men want to be around each other in delicious encounters where they feel free to flirt, to have affairs of the heart, and what not. It’s electrifying and affords warm fuzzies for one’s prideful ego. What do you make of the Book of Proverbs in God’s Holy written Word? Naive young folks these days want to believe they have all the answers, that they are so wise and hip, and seek to be buddies with one and all. Bring on the ridicule.

"They are bang on with human results in showing substantial g and in showing that results in nearly all of the tests are significantly heritable," says Robert Plomin of King's College London, who is a veteran researcher on genetic elements of human intelligence. He also says the study suggests the range of cognitive abilities tested in the chimps are influenced by the same suites of genes.

Filmmaking in Unexpected Places

The difference is perspective. I've seen a lot of films created at the expense of the people involved—elevating the product over those who contribute to its process. To me, this is counter-intuitive. I believe that to make films that are inspiring, my first responsibility is to respect and inspire the community of people directly involved. When we started, an angel investor helped us purchase a large amount of film equipment we could not afford. This act inspired us to build a company on the same ethos. What’s amazing is not just that it's fulfilling; it's also economically viable. It’s a holistic value that can’t be quantified on a spreadsheet, but is now integral to our mission: “When you give things away, you don’t lose them.” This has become key to our work.

27
Why Study the Prophets?

The Old Testament is an unfinished book. It ends with needs that haven’t been met, problems that haven’t been solved, tensions that haven’t been resolved. When we come to the end of the history recorded in the Old Testament, a small group of Israelites has returned to Jerusalem and gone to work rebuilding the city. But their capital city is not the powerful fortress it once was. They have no king on the throne like they once had in David and Solomon. They’ve rebuilt the temple, but it’s certainly not as magnificent as the temple once was; it comes nowhere near the descriptions of the glorious temple the prophets said would one day be in Jerusalem. God’s covenant people are living in the land given to them by God, but they simply cannot keep up their part of the covenant commitment. When they do have a heart to obey, it just doesn’t last.

Gliese 581g: A Black Eye for Believers in Habitable Earth-like Exoplanets

The M dwarf Gliese 581 is believed to host four planets, including one (GJ 581d) near the habitable zone that could possibly support liquid water on its surface if it is a rocky planet. The detection of another habitable-zone planet -- GJ 581 g -- is disputed, as its significance depends on the eccentricity assumed for d. Analyzing stellar activity using the Hα line, we measure a stellar rotation period of 130 ± 2 days and a correlation for Hα modulation with radial velocity. Correcting for activity greatly diminishes the signal of GJ 581d (to 1.5σ) while significantly boosting the signals of the other known super-Earth planets. GJ 581d does not exist, but is an artifact of stellar activity which, when incompletely corrected, causes the false detection of planet g.

Christians often wonder whether it is worth their time to read and study the seemingly odd narratives about God’s instructions for the tabernacle in the second half of the book of Exodus. The answer, according to Daniel R. Hyde, is an emphatic yes.

32 Apocalypse When? - Christian Research Institute

In time even complex grammatical constructions and multiple word meanings become second nature. It shouldn’t surprise us, then, that the basic principles of language that we unconsciously absorb in early childhood and consciously internalize from grade school onward are foundational to the grammatical principle of biblical interpretation: we interpret the Bible in accordance with the basic rules of language. Suppose I told my children, “I don’t want you to touch this gingerbread cake, because we are going to have dinner soon!” They wouldn’t need an advanced degree in English from Yale to understand that by “this” I meant this gingerbread cake — not that gingerbread cake, as in a gingerbread cake that would be baked for their twenty‐first birthday. Nor are they the least bit confused about the meaning of “you,” which in context refers to them, not to children of a future generation. “Soon” is equally unambiguous. To say we are going to have dinner “soon” could not possibly mean dinner in the distant future.

33
How to Be a Christian Without Going to Church

Bean affirms various kinds of spiritual gatherings and communities. But she presents them as entirely optional, and many of the stories she celebrates (for example, throughout chapter 3) seem to be about people giving up on any kind of corporate Christianity, not just the institutional church. So it’s not actually clear that she avoids the charge of individualism. Moreover, when Bean describes how alternative spiritual communities might look, they aren’t easily distinguishable from secular social clubs. In chapter 6, for instance, she advocates that believers may experience the presence of Christ, not by worshiping at church, but by making napkin rings, doing art, and baking together. As she concludes, “Is anyone up for a pickle-making party or a living-room song-writing session? Jesus will be there” (103). The next chapter on missional living among non-goers is basically about hanging out, having parties, building relationships, and travelling. She approvingly quotes Andrew Jones: “If you want to start a church, just have a party in your house and see who shows up” (112).

34
The Great Commission for Apologetics

The exhortation is simple: Christians need to be ready to defend what they believe. This verse provides the biblical charge for Christians to engage in apologetics. But this is not all that we are commanded to do in 1 Peter 3:15. The beginning portion of the passage is rarely, if ever, quoted as a charge to those engaging in apologetics. Yet it provides the foundation for apologetics! Without it, apologetics is utterly useless.

How We Portray Suffering and Suicide | Wesley J. Smith | First Things

Even worse, he felt like a burden, responsible for his wife’s anguish and that of his two young children. That led to a sense of hopelessness, Mark says, and real thoughts of suicide. But he got through it, with the support of his family and, as he describes it, “the love of God.” Today, at age sixty-one—more than half his life lived in the valley of the shadow of severe disability—Mark is a triplegic, with only his left arm unimpaired, requiring a wheelchair for mobility, often in pain from severe muscle contractions. He has lost his artistic ability, his musical talent, his capacity to care for himself independently.

Secondhand Suffering: The Grief We Often Overlook

The corollary of Silk and Gold's thesis to "dump out" is that we should "comfort in" by offering our support to those in inner rings. Traditionally, we are good at focusing on the people in the center: we know they are hurting and so we organize meals, write cards, and make sure to include their names on prayer chains. However, we tend to overlook the people in the inner rings. They are the first-line receivers of pain being "dumped out," and yet when comfort comes in, it often bypasses them.

Short circuit in the food web

They are amongst the most numerous inhabitants of the sea: tiny haptophytes of the type Emiliania huxleyi. Not visible to the naked eye, when they are in bloom in spring, they form square kilometer sized patches, they are even visible on satellite images. "Together with other phytoplankton, Emiliania huxleyi is responsible for approximately half of the global photosynthesis output," states Prof. Dr. Georg Pohnert of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany). In the process the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide – CO2 – is extracted from the atmosphere and oxygen is set free. "Additionally the microalgae use CO2 to produce tiny calcified discs which re-enforce their outer skin," the chair for Instrumental Analysis and Bio-organic Analysis continues. Thus the unicellular algae are a decisive factor for a stable world climate.

What's Wrong with The "God of the Gaps" Argument

Over the years, I have had my share of discussions with atheists and skeptics about the existence of God. Any attempt to point to God as an explanation for observable phenomena such as anticipatory, irreducible or specified complexity can invoke the atheist or naturalist to cry “ foul play.” Many of these people tend to have faith that science will be able to fill in any gaps in our knowledge. Let’s try to clear up this misunderstanding.

An Argument With N.T. Wright

Regarding your statement concerning Craig, Molinism, and the Arminian problem, I won’t for one second suggest there’s not still some element of a problem. Indeed, it’s one of the things that has made me more open to open theology (no pun intended). Still, I think there’s a huge difference between a God which predetermines the actual wills of men to damnation and one who, because of a desire for authentic, loving, free relationship allows men to accept or reject the offer of salvation. Also on this point, as Olson points out concerning consistent Arminianism, God didn’t really step back and look at the world prior to its creation and judge it right or wrong to create based upon what was going to happen. God’s forknowledge only became such in the very act of creating, for without the actuality of creation God’s forknowledge is only forknowledge of potentiality. That is, if God saw the world and decided not to create it because of his forknowledge, he would have never had that forknowledge for there would be no world to create. His forknowledge, therefore, is dependent on the actuality of that knowledge being accurate knowledge for him to know.

Facebook Users Come Together As One to Condemn Senseless Dinosaur Poaching

After Santa Jay Branscomb posted a photo of Steven Spielberg on the set of Jurassic Park , several Facebook users decried Spielberg's senseless violence against our Triceratops friends. Branscomb posted the photo ironically, typing “Disgraceful photo of recreational hunter happily posing next to a Triceratops he just slaughtered. Please share so the world can name and shame this despicable man.” But several did not get the joke and flew into a blind rage. "I don't care who he is," declared one. "He should not have shot that animal." Another called it "disgusting" and "inhumane," suggesting that Spielberg should have taken the animal to a zoo.

50
Volitional Resistance to Christianity Often Masquerades as Rational Opposition

They are my words, spoken many years before I became a Christian. All the atheists I knew (virtually all my friends at the time) identified themselves in the first category as rational objectors. I’ll bet Antony Flew, the famous British philosopher and atheist, would also have identified himself in this camp prior to becoming a theist. I don’t know anyone who was once an atheist who would ever have identified themselves as anything other than a rational objector. This really shouldn’t surprise us. Looking back at my own life as a young man who spent nine years in the university (prior to returning for seven more), I now recognize a simple truth: The more I thought I knew, the less teachable I became. My educational self-confidence led to a form of self-reliance in many aspects of my life, including the foundational worldview I constructed along the way. My “rational” resistance to theism was deeply tainted by my desire to be the author of my own worldview (rather than the acceptor of someone else’s). I don’t think this is all that uncommon for people who think they know something. That’s why virtually every skeptic identifies himself as a rational resistor, and I think this is also why those who consider themselves educated often reject any theistic worldview that requires them to submit their authority.
