Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: Greg's Top Ten Picks of the Week!

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

4 Simple Ways To Help You Read the Bible Better - Jonathan Morrow

Two quick tips here. When you read the Bible you need to understand the historical backdrop of the text. For example, the Old Testament needs to be understood in light of the Ancient Near East. And the Old Testament needs to be understood in light of a largely Jewish mindset emerging in a world heavily influenced by Greco-Roman Culture.

Episode 075: Film Nostalgia & Heaven - Christian Research Institute

“It seems that most popular new movies these days are sequels, prequels, reboots, or remakes. The reason Hollywood seems unoriginal is because, when it comes to films, we prefer nostalgia to novelty. Every human has a basic desire for how things are actually meant to be. Nevertheless, this ideal is perverted by sin to the extent that, more often than not, our desires themselves are wayward. The reason sequels, reboots, and remakes become mixed up in this desire is because our broken world is deficient to satisfy our hunger. Instead, we attach the desire to something more tangible, but still vague enough to provide an ineffable hope, like memories of feelings we have had during certain times in our past when things seemed just right. We are drawn to sequels and prequels because they promise to take us back to a place we remember enjoying. We are drawn to remakes because they promise to recreate encounters with characters and stories that once gave us comfort.”

Pursuing God intellectually: Being honest about our questions

Jesus identified the greatest commandment as loving God with our all of who we are, and Jesus specifically included loving God with our minds. But what does this mean? I suggested that we understand this as pursuing God intellectually in a way that is consonant with other relational pursuits. When we love someone, we want to know things. We are intellectually curious about what makes them tick.

Apologetics: Jesus of Faith, Jesus of History, or Jesus of Eyewitness Testimony?

The result of this discovery—at least in Aslan’s estimation—is that the New Testament Gospels should be treated as texts that convey something other than “history.” Aslan is not, of course, suggesting that the Gospels themselves are somehow non-historical documents. Clearly, the New Testament Gospels are real documents that emerged at particular times in ancient history. What Aslan is claiming is the existence of a virtually unbridgeable gap between the stories the Gospels tell about Jesus and the actual events of history.

Why It’s Wrong to Say the Bible Is Pro-Slavery

“The Bible is pro-slavery.” It’s a common charge these days. Part of the New Atheist attack on religion, it also comes from various progressive circles in order to defend certain social views (in line with the so-called redemptive-movement hermeneutic ). The claim is not incomprehensible. It has some apparent, face-value support—and not just in Old Testament law regulations, but in New Testament epistles written by the very apostles of Jesus Christ: Ephesians 6:5: “Bondservants, obey your earthly masters.” Colossians 3:22: “Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters.” 1 Peter 2:18: “Servants, be subject to your masters.” How should Christians respond to this concern? It’s a complicated issue that one brief article cannot resolve, but here are several initial appeals that may be helpful to at least draw attention to its complexity. Defining ‘Slavery’ When we read verses like Ephesians 6:5, Colossians 3:22, and 1 Peter 2:18, we hear the common English translation “slave” in light of our own historical context. We typically think of race-based, chattel slavery in which the slave is the property of the master and lacks any legal rights.

Groundbreaking Paper Shows Thousands of New Genes Needed for the Origin of Animals | Evolution News

Thus both Meyer and Marshall were right that dGRNs needed to be wired to build animals — but they were right in the most devastating manner for Darwinism, namely that the rewiring of the dGRNS was mediated by entirely new genes. The paper’s demonstration that thousands of new genes would have been required during the origin of animals is nothing short of a spectacular vindication of Meyer’s perspective on this question, and a strong falsification of Marshall’s viewpoint.

A Coward, a Skeptic, a Zealot and the Resurrection

In one of our earliest sources for the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:3-8), Paul claimed that Jesus appeared to Peter (Cephas), James and Paul himself. In the New Testament, we read that each of these men were very different people before the resurrection. Peter talked a big game but often acted in a cowardly manner. James was skeptical of his brother’s claims from the beginning. Paul was zealous in his attacks on the early Christians.

21 Not a Hillsong to Die On: 100 Billion X and One Big Why

The third and final verse is even more powerful than the first. Just as creation reveals God, so also the cross reveals his heart of love. We “see [his] heart / Eight billion different ways.” We could quibble over whether “child” is a helpful term for all eight billion humans: “Every precious one / A child you died to save.” But the lyrics here do circle back to creation by mentioning eight billion humans made in God’s image. I’m eager to affirm Jesus died for all (1 John 2:2; John 4:14; Revelation 22:17), just not all in the same way (for his sheep, John 10:14–15; his friends, John 15:13; his bride, Ephesians 5:25).

God’s Origin Story

In my  last article , I compared superhero origin stories to the beginning of the universe. Every superhero needs an origin story, and so does the universe. We need a reason why it exists. I argued the best explanation is a God who caused the universe to come into existence. But doesn’t that just push the origins problem back one step? What is God’s origin story? Why is he here? That’s the focus of this article.

41 Love Other Mothers as Thyself

Our sisters need this love. When doubt and confusion settle bleakly in the heart, we all need the good news that Christ heals us, that he renews us. When we love one another in Christ, we highlight that our shared experiences in mothering outnumber our differences. Every mother knows the urgency to protect her children, the visceral churning, the fierceness. We can all recall our understanding, after cradling our first child, that love penetrates far deeper than we had ever envisioned possible, flowing from our Creator’s profound and abundant design. When we nurture and toil and sacrifice for our children, we remember the one who sacrificed for all of us (1 Peter 3:18). Such breathtaking truths far surpass the paltry value of organic produce and Pinterest parties.

Michael Horton: They need more apologetics than pizza

We have to stop taking the young people in our church for granted.  They are not “The Church of Tomorrow,” but part of today’s church, the sheep Christ calls us to feed and care for.  They need more apologetics than pizza, more opportunities for genuine questioning and having their questions answered than rock concerts.  But they also need their church to be a “plausibility structure” that displays the truth of the gospel.  That doesn’t mean a community of the perfect or the know-it-alls (that will only lead to disappointment, despair, and cynicism), but of sinners who return each week together to repent and believe the gospel and be bound together in a fellowship of pilgrims.

Obama-era license aimed to let Iran convert money in dollars

FILE - In this April 16, 2018, file photo, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, speaks during a news conference in Cincinnati. The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran brief access to the U.S. financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so. That’s according to an investigation by Senate Republicans released June 6. “The Obama Administration misled the American people and Congress because they were desperate to get a deal with Iran,” said Portman, the subcommittee’s chairman. I just finished a wonderful weekend at Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, Arkansas . This is a large, active church with an innovative and visionary leadership team . They invited me to speak to their members because they understand the growing skepticism in our culture; they’re eager to prepare younger members to defend what they believe and to equip older members to better share the truth. Our sessions were well attended and energetic. After one talk, a frustrated sister in Christ (I’ll call her Jan) told me about a recent exchange she had with a friend who believed in God but rejected Jesus. In past efforts to share her faith, Jan relied on her own relationship with Jesus and her testimony of transformation. But when she took this approach with her friend, she discovered she wasn’t the only person who had a transformational experience. Jan’s friend shared her own relational experience with God and her own testimony of transformation. Jan found herself at a stand-off: personal testimony vs. personal testimony. She discovered her transformational experience simply wasn’t evidence enough.

Who Are the Real Christians?

In our related focus groups, some people told stories of personal hurts inflicted by religious people. One woman described her less-than-loving youth leaders. She said, “I was in a leadership group at church, and they found out that I had a beer…. I was fourteen, and I was going off the deep end maybe. They kicked me out and said they were going to keep in touch with me, but the youth pastor never called me again.” Another woman described a sister who offers her parenting advice. The sister looks pious on social media, but she and her husband are addicts, destructive to the core. “They spend a massive amount of time in third-world countries feeding children and dedicating their lifeline to their religious community, but behind the scenes they dabble in methamphetamines. It’s horrible.” This group member wants nothing to do with her sister’s offers to pray for her. “No thank you,” she says, “your purity is tarnished.”

Preventing #MeToo Begins in Preschool: 4 Books to Help You Talk to Your Kids

Our twin daughters turned 5 last fall, and they will soon be starting school. The last few months they’ve practiced using the bathroom independently, tying shoes, and recognizing basic sight words. We’ve also been discussing what good touches and bad touches are, why it’s important to keep their private parts private, and how to talk to an adult if something or someone is making them uncomfortable. And just this morning, we introduced a new word into their vocabulary: pornography. When Do You Start Talking Porn? Some may think 5 is too young to teach about pornography, but research shows that 11 is the average age—not the earliest, but the average —for pornography exposure. According to a different  British study , “Children under 10 now account for 22 percent of online porn consumption under 18.” I’ve sat across from many dear friends as they’ve tried to figure out how to deal with unwanted pornography exposure or unwanted sexual advances on their shockingly young children. These godly parents are devastated by the sin and brokenness of this world. We may like to believe this issue exists only  outside our churches, but if we’re learning anything from the #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements, it’s clear that Christian culture is susceptible, too.
