Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: Greg's Top Ten Picks of the Week!

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Five Apologetic Topics Every Christian Should Learn About

On more than one occasion, people have asked me what areas should they focus on in their own study of apolgoetics. These are people that want to engage the culture and are burdened for the people God has placed in their lives. In my opinion, while there are many others not mentioned here, there are at least five apologetic areas every Christian should learn about. What I mean is that over the years of talking to hundreds of college students and others as well, these are the continual topics that always come to the surface. So here are some of my picks:

3
The Limits of Apologetics: the Difference Between 'Faith That' and 'Faith In'

I am sure many folks might share this real life illustration that I am about to share. Allow me to start off by saying that many professing Christians today have what could be considered an “accidental faith.” They “believe that” there is a God that exists. They “believe that” Jesus died on a cross for our sins. They “believe that” He rose from the dead. All of these facts are true, and embraced by all Bible believing Christians. But if you were to ask the average believer, they really have not been equipped to articulate why these cardinal truths are true.

Obama-era license aimed to let Iran convert money in dollars

FILE - In this April 16, 2018, file photo, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, speaks during a news conference in Cincinnati. The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran brief access to the U.S. financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so. That’s according to an investigation by Senate Republicans released June 6. “The Obama Administration misled the American people and Congress because they were desperate to get a deal with Iran,” said Portman, the subcommittee’s chairman. Who Are the Real Christians?

In our related focus groups, some people told stories of personal hurts inflicted by religious people. One woman described her less-than-loving youth leaders. She said, “I was in a leadership group at church, and they found out that I had a beer…. I was fourteen, and I was going off the deep end maybe. They kicked me out and said they were going to keep in touch with me, but the youth pastor never called me again.” Another woman described a sister who offers her parenting advice. The sister looks pious on social media, but she and her husband are addicts, destructive to the core. “They spend a massive amount of time in third-world countries feeding children and dedicating their lifeline to their religious community, but behind the scenes they dabble in methamphetamines. It’s horrible.” This group member wants nothing to do with her sister’s offers to pray for her. “No thank you,” she says, “your purity is tarnished.”

5 Important Philosophical-Apologetics Terms in the New Testament

There are five very important philosophical-apologetics terms in the New Testament that every Christian should have some familiarity with. Learning and appreciating these key terms will aid believers in both their theological and apologetics understanding. Preventing #MeToo Begins in Preschool: 4 Books to Help You Talk to Your Kids

Our twin daughters turned 5 last fall, and they will soon be starting school. The last few months they’ve practiced using the bathroom independently, tying shoes, and recognizing basic sight words. We’ve also been discussing what good touches and bad touches are, why it’s important to keep their private parts private, and how to talk to an adult if something or someone is making them uncomfortable. And just this morning, we introduced a new word into their vocabulary: pornography. When Do You Start Talking Porn? Some may think 5 is too young to teach about pornography, but research shows that 11 is the average age—not the earliest, but the average —for pornography exposure. According to a different  British study , “Children under 10 now account for 22 percent of online porn consumption under 18.” I’ve sat across from many dear friends as they’ve tried to figure out how to deal with unwanted pornography exposure or unwanted sexual advances on their shockingly young children. These godly parents are devastated by the sin and brokenness of this world. We may like to believe this issue exists only  outside our churches, but if we’re learning anything from the #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements, it’s clear that Christian culture is susceptible, too.

Michael Horton: They need more apologetics than pizza

We have to stop taking the young people in our church for granted.  They are not “The Church of Tomorrow,” but part of today’s church, the sheep Christ calls us to feed and care for.  They need more apologetics than pizza, more opportunities for genuine questioning and having their questions answered than rock concerts.  But they also need their church to be a “plausibility structure” that displays the truth of the gospel.  That doesn’t mean a community of the perfect or the know-it-alls (that will only lead to disappointment, despair, and cynicism), but of sinners who return each week together to repent and believe the gospel and be bound together in a fellowship of pilgrims.

J Warner Wallace Gives Five Reasons to Support The Poached Egg

If you’ve followed TPE regularly for any given amount of time, it’s very likely that you’ve noticed that I have a passion for Christian Apologetics. The reason for this is simple: After rejecting my Christian upbringing and faith in my early twenties due to doubt, it was through Christian Apologetics that I returned to the faith and recommitted my life to Christ after many years of wandering as a rather apathetic self-proclaimed agnostic and I personally know of and have heard of countless of others who have similar stories. It is an undeniable fact that that apologetics is one of the many ways that the Holy Spirit uses to draw people to Christ. Just a few of the many examples are C.S. Lewis, Lee Strobel, and former cold-case homicide detective and committed atheist, J. Warner Wallace .

5 strategies for actually reforming your church — Southern Equip

Then the church issues a call for a man to serve as pastor. They’ve grown so accustomed to their disastrous polity that they don’t even notice it. But he does. He sees the disunity, the infighting, the confusion, and the failure to walk together in love. He grimaces at the revolving door membership that bloats the church roll while further crippling the congregation’s health. He recognizes the lack of faithful shepherding that should be done by elders but without elder leadership in their polity, doesn’t happen. With great courage, he accepts the church’s call to serve and begins the painful journey of leading toward biblical practices.

A Coward, a Skeptic, a Zealot and the Resurrection

In one of our earliest sources for the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:3-8), Paul claimed that Jesus appeared to Peter (Cephas), James and Paul himself. In the New Testament, we read that each of these men were very different people before the resurrection. Peter talked a big game but often acted in a cowardly manner. James was skeptical of his brother’s claims from the beginning. Paul was zealous in his attacks on the early Christians.

The Bottom Line Is That Jack Phillips Won

There's a lot of discussion about Monday's Supreme Court decision which pitted religious freedoms against LGBT rights. Was the ruling really that significant? Can We Trust the Gospels, Even If They Were Transmitted Orally? | Cold Case Christianity

When we offer this kind of objection, we start (of course) by denying the supernatural power of God to guide the Biblical authors and protect their memory. But as an atheist, I had no problem beginning with this denial; I was already denying the existence of God, let alone God’s power to protect the eyewitness account. My distrust in the ability of eyewitnesses to recall and transmit the account orally seemed very reasonable back when I was a non-believer. I simply could not fathom the writers being able to transmit the necessary and important details from one person to another without corruption or loss of information. After investigating this more thoroughly, however, I do think we have good reason to trust the accurate transmission of the gospels.

William Lane Craig: The Church is lagging dangerously behind

As Christians we face two tasks in our evangelism: saving the soul and saving the mind, that is to say, not only converting people spiritually, but converting them intellectually as well. And the Church is lagging dangerously behind with regard to this second task. If the church loses the intellectual battle in one generation, then evangelism will become immeasurably more difficult in the next. The war is not yet lost, and it is one which we must not lose: souls of men and women hang in the balance. For the sake of greater effectiveness in witnessing to Jesus Christ Himself, as well as for their own sakes, evangelicals cannot afford to keep on living on the periphery of responsible intellectual existence. Thinking about your faith is indeed a virtue, for it helps you to better understand and defend your faith.

Pursue Justice First, Your Agenda Second | Blog & Mablog

I am answering Jake Meador at Mere Orthodoxy. Matthew Lee Anderson, founder and lead writer at Mere Orthodoxy, has been vigorously defending the Revoice conference. Karen Swallow Prior, a research fellow at the ERLC, headed by Russell Moore, was one of the early voices raised against Patterson, and has also applauded the Revoice conference. (Also, if I may change the subject briefly, she is recovering from a recent accident in which she was hit by a bus, and so our prayers go with her.) Because these things are never simple, Owen Strachan, also a research fellow at ERLC, has been staunchly opposing the Revoice conference, and good on him. Robert Gagnon, a gracious Christian gentlemen who just spoke for our NSA’s commencement, has been outspoken online on behalf of Patterson. And Jonathan Merritt, who kicked this whole thing off, has somehow failed to grasp the whole “cast the first stone” concept. These things are all connected.

Beauty Leads Us Home | Evolution News

“To believe in objective beauty is to be philosophically orthodox: ‘the view that has been most strongly held by philosophers in the past, from Plato onwards, has been the objective one…that whether an object is beautiful or not is a matter of fact and not a matter of opinion or taste, and that value judgements about beauty are true or false.’…Despite the current fashion for abandoning this orthodoxy, there are many contemporary philosophers who hold to the objectivity of beauty (e.g., Winfried Corduan, Norman L. Geisler, Peter Kreeft, J. P. Moreland, Alvin Plantinga, Richard Swinburne, and Keith E. Yandell).” Peter S. Williams, Intelligent Design, Aesthetics, and Design Arguments , idem, note 2.

Confessions of a fallen worship pastor — Southern Equip

Finally, the stress and burden of lies and deceit became too much and he confessed to his wife, his pastor, and his church what he had been hiding. For the next six months, he lived the life of the prodigal son. There was no more hiding what he had become, and he stepped completely out of the light and into darkness. Five months later, on his 31st birthday, he was alone on the back porch of his empty house. The water and heat had been turned off, and other than a mattress and a table, there was not any furniture in the empty rooms of the home he once shared with his family. As he sat on his porch and looked down at the half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels next to him, reality finally hit him—he had hit bottom.

50 Love Other Mothers as Thyself

Our sisters need this love. When doubt and confusion settle bleakly in the heart, we all need the good news that Christ heals us, that he renews us. When we love one another in Christ, we highlight that our shared experiences in mothering outnumber our differences. Every mother knows the urgency to protect her children, the visceral churning, the fierceness. We can all recall our understanding, after cradling our first child, that love penetrates far deeper than we had ever envisioned possible, flowing from our Creator’s profound and abundant design. When we nurture and toil and sacrifice for our children, we remember the one who sacrificed for all of us (1 Peter 3:18). Such breathtaking truths far surpass the paltry value of organic produce and Pinterest parties.
