The Gospel According to Ewan McGregor

We sat down with Ewan McGregor to talk about his groundbreaking take on the 40-day temptation of Jesus, and the experience of getting inside the head of history’s most famous foes.

Did Bieber and Skrillex Steal the Riff for ‘Sorry’ From This Song?

Pop star Justin Bieber and his collaborator Skrillex are getting sued. The singer White Hinterland (aka Casey Dienel) has reportedly filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the duo, claiming that they stole a vocal hook from her song “Ring the Bell” for their hit single “Sorry.” And, as you can hear in the two videos below, she might have a case. The lawsuit centers around the “unique characteristics of the female vocal riff” which are heard throughout both songs, including the very beginnings. In a Facebook post, Dienel wrote (in part), The writers, producers, and performers of “Sorry” did not obtain a license for this exploitation of my work, nor did they obtain or seek my permission … After this post, I intend to leave the subject matter of the lawsuit in the hands of my lawyers and the legal system. However, because I do not take the act of suing lightly, I want to take this opportunity to briefly explain my decision to those of you who are connected to me through family, friendship, and music. Creating original and unique music is my life’s passion, but it is challenging and time consuming. I poured my blood, sweat, and tears into writing and producing “Ring the Bell” … Like most artists that sample music, Bieber could have licensed my song for use in “Sorry.” But he chose not to contact me. After the release of “Sorry,” my lawyers sent Bieber a letter regarding the infringement, but Bieber’s team again chose to ignore me. I offered Bieber’s team an opportunity to have a private dialogue about the infringement, but they refused to even acknowledge my claim, despite the obviousness of the sample. You can read her full statement here.

This Dude Proposed to His Girlfriend with a Custom ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Level

Old school Nintendo enthusiast Shane Birkinbine recently proposed to his girlfriend in a way that would make any early ‘90s gamer proud. Using the game Super Mario Maker, Birkinbine created a custom Super Mario Bros. level, spelling out a proposal to his unsuspected girlfriend, who was playing the game. It’s a pretty great clip. And, spoiler alert, she said yes, and completed the level.

The House speaker, Paul D. Ryan, has not given Mr. Trump an endorsement — notwithstanding occasional unfounded claims by the candidate’s aides that one is coming — but the two men continue to have what the speaker has called “productive conversations” on policy issues. Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Jeff Flake of Arizona, both Republicans, have treated Mr. Trump like an insufferable relative at a family wedding. But Mr. Graham said he recently had a “cordial” phone call with Mr. Trump on foreign policy, and Mr. Flake has said he is still deciding whether to endorse the businessman.

‘Boxcar Children' Movies Are in the Works So Millennials Can Relive Their Book Fair Glory Days

Remember the golden age of literature? A time when all books worth reading featured young protagonists with names like Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, who spent their childhoods exclusively solving mysteries? If so, we have good news. Several movies based on The Boxcar Children series are in the works.

Know When to Walk Away

I highly doubt I could pull off a digital detox without first deleting the social media apps from my phone and laptop. Some users hide the buttons into a buried folder. I find it best to get rid of them altogether (I can re-install them in about fifteen minutes). Out of the range of my mouse pointer and click-finger, the apps are, for me, rendered inaccessible. And when Instagram is not immediately accessible, for example, my phone habits change drastically.

The Gospel Coalition 2017 National Conference

In this workshop, we'll talk about the Rev. Oscar Pfister, an evangelical Protestant pastor, who was a close associate and friend of Sigmund Freud. Although Freud respected Pfister as both a cleric and a scholar, Pfister focused on points of his agreement with Freud's research and psychoanalysis rather than making much of the faulty presuppositions in Freud's worldview. Most disturbingly, it seems as though this "man of God" whom Freud and his whole family clearly loved, never insisted on the gospel's demands on Freud's life. Not only was Freud never converted, he was lulled into thinking there were powerful areas of overlap between his worldview and Pfister's. The story is a cautionary tale for those who mistake "relational evangelism" and "cultural engagement" for gospel-oriented worldview apologetics predicated on incommensurable presuppositions.

10 The Briefing 05-31-16 -

The value of human life over against the life of animals was drawn to our national attention over the weekend when at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, a four-year-old boy slipped under an enclosure and into a moat inside the gorilla exhibit and into the hands of a 17-year-old male gorilla. As the events unfolded on Saturday in the Cincinnati Zoo, officials made the decision that they had to kill the gorilla in order to save the boy, and that set off a cultural conversation that reveals to us a very great deal of our modern confusion, a modern confusion that, we need to note, is not only a matter of concern, but of deadly significance, because we’re talking about the dignity and sanctity of human life. In this case you have an almost perfect storm of unique circumstances. You have a four-year-old boy who had escaped his mother and had fallen into the enclosure of Western lowland gorillas, a very endangered species. And then you had two females that were lured out of the enclosure by zoo officials, a dangerous animals response team that knew immediately what to do first.

11 Grace to You

But for those who do believe and follow Christ, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish” (v. 28).The security of Jesus’ sheep rests with Him as the Good Shepherd, who has the power to keep them safe. Neither thieves and robbers (vv. 1,8) nor the wolf (v. 12) can harm them. Verse 29 makes clear that the Father ultimately stands behind the sheep’s security, for no one is able to steal from God, who is in sovereign control of all things (Col. 3:3; Rom. 8:31–39). No stronger passage in the Old Testament or New Testament exists for the absolute, eternal security of every true Christian.

WORLD | Troubling ties | June 11, 2016

Str/AFP/Getty Images2011: Damaturu, Nigeria While the full truth may never come to light, what’s at issue are long-standing Clinton ties to controversial Nigerian businessmen—billionaires who have donated money toward both Clintons’ presidential campaigns and the Clinton Foundation—who could benefit in seeing Boko Haram proliferate. Knowing whether she placed financial ties and influence peddling ahead of national security interests during that time period is more urgent than ever, now that the former secretary of state could become the commander in chief.

You Can’t Buy Manna at Costco

It’s a great feeling when you can stock up on food and paper products at a wholesale store and know you won’t have to go back for months. But God doesn’t allow us to stock up on his grace. He gives it to us one day at a time, just as he gave his people manna. And just as they waited for daily bread for 40 years, we wait on daily grace for a lifetime.

How to Address America’s Foster Care Crisis? It Takes a Village

That’s the night my husband, John, and I sat at a friend’s dinner table surrounded by five girls between the ages of 5 and 15. Some were adopted; others were there through foster care. She told us, “There are orphans right here in Hawaii who need adoptive families. The church really needs to get involved.”

Science: People Who Are Workaholics Are More Likely to Suffer From Anxiety, Depression and ADHD

These criteria involve being totally preoccupied by work (salience), using work to alleviate emotional stress (mood modification), gradually working longer and longer hours to get the same mood modifying effects (tolerance), suffering emotional and physical distress if unable to work (withdrawal), sacrificing other obligations (personal relationships with partner and children, social activities, exercising, etc.) because of work (conflict), desiring or attempting to control the number of hours spent working without success (relapse), and suffering some kind of harm or negative consequence as either a direct or indirect result of the excessive working (problems).

The Secret to Effective Prayer - Christian Research Institute

Everybody wants to know the secret to something. Golfers want to know the secret to playing golf like Tiger Woods. I know I do. Investors want to know the secret to making a fortune on Wall Street. Parents want to know the secret to raising healthy, happy kids, and Christians desperately want to know the secret to effective prayer. So what is that secret? The secret was provided by Jesus Christ. Doctor Luke points out that Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. He wasn’t like the religious leaders of the day. Jesus didn’t pray to be seen by men. He prayed because He treasured fellowship with His heavenly Father. Hypocrites, on the other hand, gain their reward through public prayer. They may be perceived by the world as being spiritual giants but by the time they’re finished they will have received everything they’ll every get – their prayers’ worth and nothing more.

If You Can Keep It

If You Can Keep It is at once a thrilling review of America's uniqueness, and a sobering reminder that America's greatness cannot continue unless we truly understand what our founding fathers meant for us to be.  The book includes a stirring call-to-action for every American to understand the ideals behind the "noble experiment in ordered liberty" that is America. It also paints a vivid picture of the tremendous fragility of that experiment and explains why that fragility has been dangerously forgotten—and in doing so it lays out our own responsibility to live those ideals and carry on those freedoms. Metaxas believes America is not a nation bounded by ethnic identity or geography, but rather by a radical and unprecedented idea, based upon liberty and freedom. It's time to reconnect to that idea before America loses the very foundation for what made it exceptional in the first place.

18 When Muslims Meet Christ

J. Dudley Woodberry, a noted Christian scholar of Islam, cites five reasons Muslims are deciding for Christ: the lifestyle of Christians; the power of God in answered prayers and healing; dissatisfaction with the type of Islam they have experienced; the spiritual truth in the Bible; and biblical teachings about the love of God. Some of these things we can control; others are up to God alone. For instance, there are reports that Jesus is appearing to many Muslims in dreams and visions, especially to those who have little access to the Bible or Christians.

1 Peter 3:14–15: Treasure Jesus More Than Safety

With terrorism, political instability, and social unrest, much of our culture is given to fear and anxiety. In the face of such realities, should Christians fear the things that the world does? In this lab, Pastor John gives us one answer to this question and tells us that we have something to treasure more than safety.

Raising Kids Who Can Stump the Dad

I didn’t know much about raising kids when they were born, and almost 23 years later I think I know even less. I’m certainly more aware of how confusing it can be. Still, somehow I think Sara and I succeeded in a few things with them in spite of ourselves. Since the topic in the last column was learning, and this is a continuation of that topic, I’d like to suggest three things—three out of many—that Christian parents can do to expand their children’s educational growth, with or without Christian schooling or homeschooling.

21 Please Convince Me

Consider: what we see as evil, whether a thought or an act, can only be gauged if we first hold in our minds what the good would be. For example, using a knife to cut someone is evil when done by the assailant but not by the surgeon. Setting off an explosion is evil when used to harm others but not when used to carve out a tunnel. The knife and the cutting; the bomb and the blast – these may be “things’ in a manner of speaking, but any measure of evil in their use depends not on what they are, but on the extent to which their use deviated from God’s perfect will.

The Briefing 06-02-16 -

Now you have the same demographer making the comment in terms of this article that China is going to face an absolute economic meltdown with the aging of its population and the radical decline of young workers entering the economy. French’s article also raises a new kind of vocabulary for us as we look to the political issues that are going to be faced not only by China, but other governments. It’s a question, he says, of “guns and canes,” quoting Mark L. Haas, a political scientist at Duquesne University. By using the phrase “guns and canes,” he’s drawing attention to the old formula that used to be discussed of the political decision between spending money for guns or butter—that is, the decision faced by government as to whether or not it would spend government funds on national defense or on social programs—also there, guns and butter. But now it’s guns and canes, says Haas. It is going to come down to whether the government has to spend money primarily on social services for the elderly, there are the canes, or for guns. French goes so far as to say that China is now faced with a nearly impossible situation.

Three Lies Culture Tells Us About Being Single

In reality, my single friends are living some of the most sacrificial and selfless lifestyles I know. They are the ones who are willing and able to work long hours at lower paying jobs, often serving people directly with very little recognition. They are the ones who will drop what they’re doing to babysit so their married friends can have a much-needed date night or pick up the phone at 2 a.m. when a friend is in crisis. They spend most of their vacation days celebrating the weddings, baby showers and celebrations of other people. Their days tend to be long and packed, because they are involved in so many aspects of work, church and their communities. This is the reality of single life that many people are living. And they are painting a beautiful picture of a life lived out of love and service.

Living in a (Nominal) Religious Context

The dangers of living in a nominal religious context aren’t the same as living in a zealous violent religious context like regions in the Middle East. Living in those areas can cost one their life. Living in a nominal religious context may not put one’s life in danger, but if not careful it can endanger a believer in other ways that are just as costly—just on a different scale.

American culture is in crisis. Here’s What Jesus Meant When He Said, “Sell Everything And Give It to the Poor.”

Living here has forced me to dig deeper into Jesus’ teachings about poverty and wealth, because like most readers of this article: I am filthy rich. I was forced to ask, what did Jesus mean when he said, “Go. Sell everything you have and give to the poor…” (Mark 10:21) or, “any one of you who does not give up everything he owns cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33)?

Can Social Conservatism Survive Trump?

Social conservatives and evangelical leaders who were some of Donald Trump’s staunchest foes during the GOP primary now face a dilemma in the general election: Should they vote for a man as immoral as Trump in order to stop Hillary Clinton from becoming president? Since Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee on May 3, Princeton professor Robert George, a leading social conservative intellectual, has been thinking about that question. He hasn't been able to reach a conclusion yet. The best argument for holding our noses and voting for Donald Trump can be summed up in two words: Supreme Court, says George. There is no doubt that Hillary Clinton would shift the balance of the Court to the left, and there would be disastrous consequences for conservatives who care about issues like religious liberty and the right to life. Trump released a list of 11 potential Supreme Court nominees, but did not promise he'd pick one of them as president but would nominate a person like them. Given Trump's record of dishonesty and infidelity, George says Trump's pledge to appoint constitutionalists is essentially meaningless, but with Trump, you've at least got a shot.

While giving extensive details of the attack and noting “significant casualties,” none of the documents mentioned Vernice Guthrie or any American present at the bombing.

37 How Will You Honor the Fallen?

First, fly the flag. At home and in your town. You might want to check over at your local town hall and ask if the flag will be displayed properly on Monday: Flown at half-mast until noon. As the website puts it, “The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.”

Introduction "Dinosaur Blood and the Age of the Earth" by biochemist Fazale Rana ( softcover , Kindle , video ) is a book that I have been anticipating for over a year now. It addresses a challenge regarding the debate within the Christian church about the age of the earth ( check here for my reasons for believing internal and theological debates are important for the apologist ). The questions that Dr. Rana attempts to answer is if the discoveries of soft tissue in dinosaur fossils is a good argument for a young age of the earth, the historicity of the Genesis 1 account of creation, and the truth of the Christian faith. The book is a mere four chapters with three appendices contained in 88 pages. This review will provide a chapter-by-chapter summary; I avoid going into too much detail so that you, the reader, will have the incentive to get the full work to read the details of Dr. Rana's case for yourself Book Introduction Dr. Rana introduces the book by briefly explaining its purpose. Over the last decade, controversy has arisen surrounding studies that indicate long-term preservation of soft tissue in fossilized dinosaur bone.

Tragedy: Migrant Death Toll Has Surpassed 1,000 in the Last Week

According to the U.N.’s human rights arm, in the first months of 2016 alone, at least 2,510 have died attempting to make the voyage to Europe from countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Many are still fleeing violence, the rise of ISIS, instability and poverty throughout the region.

The Restless Heart, Augustine, and Us

This hope was found the person was Christ. Some have taken Augustine to be a Platonist or Neo-Platonist in Christian dress. But this is not true. His mission was to relate Christianity to the other worldviews of the day and to work out all the implication of his own. He looked for common ground with other philosophies, and especially with Platonism. This makes sense since Platonism affirms the reality of an eternal, immaterial, and primordial reality in the realm of the Forms or Ideas. Augustine took this as partly right. Reality is not exhausted by the material world. There is a spiritual world. However, the longings of Augustine’s soul could not be answered by any impersonal spiritual idea. His famous sentence, “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in thee,” speaks of a reality irreducibly personal, interpersonal, and reverential.

How Do We Help Kids Who Have Left the Faith?

Remember that God’s heart is broken more than yours . It’s hard to think of a more passionate and committed love than the love of a mother. But God loves us and yearns to see our kids come back to faith more than we do. Jesus said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” (Luke 13:34). And Peter said, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9). We can pray to God knowing that he yearns to see our kids return to faith too.
