REBOOT | Youth Apologetics

Once a year, REBOOT meets in the centre of London to explore questions such as ‘How can we know God exists?’, ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ and ‘Hasn’t science disproved God?’. REBOOT provides a place for young people from 12-18 years old, with or without any faith or church background, to raise their objections and investigate different perspectives. Through its annual conference, online resources, and speaking invitations, REBOOT aims to equip young people to understand and be able to answer some of these big questions for themselves. Our team from the Zacharias Trust and the OCCA [the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics] want you to have confidence in what you believe, and the chance to be honest about your doubts. Since its launch in 2013, REBOOT has welcomed over 1000 young people, and this year we are excited to see more of you than ever!

Report: ISIS Fighter Who 'Enjoyed' Killing Christians Wants to Follow Jesus After Dreaming of Man in White Who Told Him 'You Are Killing My People'

It has become a common occurrence over the years for Muslims in the Middle East who have converted to Christianity to claim to have been compelled to do so after dreaming of a person who they believe is Jesus Christ. Now, one militant belonging to the brutal Islamic State that has massacred Christians has converted to his victims' religion after dreaming of "a man in white" with a startling message, according to one missionary's account.

Genius Turns Air Mattress into a Giant Whoopee Cushion

It’s this type of ingenuity, bold creativity and sheer engineering genius that has propelled mankind to build skyscrapers, put satellites into space and push the limits of technology and science: With only an air mattress and a dream, this dude has created a giant, fully functioning air Whoopee Cushion. As Laughing Squid points out, it’s not actually the world’s largest, but (despite his cat’s response), it’s still pretty impressive if you ask us ...

FIFA President Sepp Blatter Is Stepping Down

Amidst a corruption scandal involving several members of FIFA leadership, the longtime president of the international soccer organization has said that he is stepping down. At a press conference, Sepp Blatter—who was just re-elected to the position last week—announced the move, saying “I have deeply reflected on my presidency and my past 40 years at FIFA. I love FIFA more than anything and I only want to do the best for football and FIFA.” Sources have told ABC News that the FBI is now investigating Blatter as part of a massive crackdown on the organization which recently resulted in the arrest of 14 people—nine FIFA officials and five corporate executives—accused of orchestrating massive bribes related to the World Cup and international soccer ...

Why the New Pew Report Ought to Energize Us As Christian Case Makers

Surprising: The Least Educated Are More Likely to Be Atheists The media sometimes portrays atheists as the thoughtful, intelligent and informed people of America. Atheists groups try to reinforce this depiction. David Silverman, the president of American Atheists, responded to the Pew report by claiming, “More people (atheists) know the facts, and more people realize they are not alone.” But the statistics show that most atheists are not highly educated. According to the Pew survey, the largest group of atheists (57%) have less than a bachelor’s degree (26% have a high school diploma or less). Only 26% have completed a four year degree program and only 16% have a post-graduate degree. Make no mistake about it, Christian statistics are similarly poor, but here’s my point: many Christians tend to shrink from engaging their openly non-believing friends because they feel intellectually intimidated. But the largest group of atheists are just like the largest group of Christians – neither majority possesses a graduate degree. We are far more alike than we are different in this regard.

A Warning from Canada: Same-Sex Marriage Erodes Fundamental Rights

Americans need to prepare for the same sort of surveillance-society in America if the Supreme Court rules to ban marriage as a male-female institution. It means that no matter what you believe, the government will be free to regulate your speech, your writing, your associations, and whether or not you may express your conscience. Americans also need to understand that the endgame for some in the LGBT rights movement involves centralized state power—and the end of First Amendment freedoms.

TSA screeners failed tests to detect explosives, weapons -

11 Talking to Your Children About Transgender Issues

Transgenderism — also called "gender dysphoria," "gender confusion" or "gender identity disorder" — is tough enough for adults to understand. So when our children encounter these gender-confusing messages, what do we say? Most importantly, how do we help them develop a biblical, Christian perspective on this issue?

Pastor Creflo Dollar might get his $65 million private jet after all

“A long-range, high-speed, intercontinental jet aircraft is a tool that is necessary in order to fulfill the mission of the ministry,” says WCCI’s statement justifying the restart of the plane fundraising. “In light of an unfortunate accident that recently resulted in the ministry’s aircraft being declared a total loss, it is our intention to purchase another airplane at a time, place and price of our choosing.”

Freedom Is . . . a Sexual Ponzi Scheme?

T hat is a deeply impoverished notion of what it is to be free. Even a moment's reflection on the behavior described in the article raises obvious questions. Think of the husband who does not have to worry that his wife is finding better sex on her business trips than at home because she is committed to him alone. Or the wife who does not have to worry about contracting an STD because she knows her husband respects the marriage bond and does not jump into bed with any woman who takes his fancy. Or the children who do not have to fret about whom they will be expected to call “Mom” or “Dad” next year. Would being “freed from monogamy” really make these people more free? Much more can be said on the nature of freedom, but this gives at least some sense of the complexity of the notion and how it has been naively trivialized by a world where sexualized personal pleasure is the solvent of all social bonds and the measure of all things.

The Case of the Amazing Gay-Marriage Data: How a Grad Student Uncovered a Huge Fraud

In the post, the author of which was dubbed “Reannon” by PSR’s random-name generator, Broockman highlighted two of the oddities in the data. One was that individual respondents’ attitudes toward gay marriage, measured on a five-point scale, and their attitudes toward gay people in general, measured on a 101-point “feelings thermometer,” didn’t vary that much from survey to survey (remember that respondents’ in LaCour and Green’s study were surveyed—or were supposed to have been surveyed—multiple times). One would expect their answers to jump around randomly a bit—that’s just the nature of attempting to translate a messy human opinion into a single number (feelings thermometers, in general, are known to have particularly low so-called “test-retest reliability”). Plus, when you have a big enough sample, which LaCour did, a few people are inevitably going to give zany results for some reason or another—sometimes, for example, they’ll appear to go from being Harvey Milk in the first wave of data collection to Jerry Falwell in the second.

In Hong Kong, the Apartments Are Fit for a Mosquito

This is absolutely no way to handle the issue of unaffordable housing in Hong Kong and is but a representation of complete failures in the government's policies. In fact, these homes should not even be allowed to be built. They amount to nothing more than a waste of land, are not big enough to solve the housing problem for Hong Kong's families and exist only as a store of value, i.e. a gold bar for investors. They have no kitchens, closets and their size is more akin to a prison cell than a home. If the government would take bold measures to reform the economy, wean it off its real-state addiction, broaden the tax base, rely less on land sales and stamp duty for income, bar Mainland speculators from all but select new developments, etc...then perhaps one day things will get under control. Based on electricity usage there are an estimated 250,000 empty apartments in Hong Kong and the government still thinks more flats need to be built to meet the demand - more gold bars.

Stop Thinking Content, Start Thinking Resources

Being “stay-worthy” requires organization. You have to remember that your audience’s attention is a very limited asset and you can’t make them dig. That Home Depot DIY site has such concise, clear navigation and also doesn’t try to drown you in content respects that fact. The Lowe’s How-To site does not, and therefore less stay-worthy. The moment someone gets frustrated that they can’t find what they need, they’re gone. You’ve just lost them. Are there ways to quickly find any given thing on the Lowe’s site? Sure. But in general, are things as easy to find on the Lowe’s How-To site as Home Depot’s DIY site? Not a chance, and that makes the Lowe’s site behave much less like a resource.

A Requiem for the Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts were doomed the moment the national leadership decided to preserve the organization at the cost of the values and ideals that gave it birth. Speaking to a national meeting of Boy Scouts of America leaders, President Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, called for the B.S.A. to abandon its policy of allowing the participation of openly gay scouts, but not the involvement of openly-gay adults.

It’s OK to Talk about Your Pain

2. Getting medical help: Don't be nervous about talking to your doctor. Those nerves are the stigma talking. Doctors see it every single day; you're not shocking them! Going into treatment, try both on your own and with the counsel of your doctor/counselor, to get a picture of what it feels like to not have the mental health issue you have - the healed end point. This is important so you can know when a medicine is really working. It is not uncommon for it to work a little bit. But if you are feeling REALLY bad, a little improvement can feel like a relief but it can trick you.

Caitlyn Jenner and Love in the Future Tense

Telling the truth means telling the world what it just might already know: that no amount of surgical reconstructing or dexterous Photoshopping will re-make or beautify Bruce’s self-inflicted wounds on his way to becoming Caitlyn. But telling the truth in love means listening, really listening, when other Caitlyns tell you why their Bruces needed to go, why they always felt like impostors in their own skin until that skin was sovereignly rearranged and knit back together, fearfully and wonderfully made another way, their way.

The Problem with Church-Hopping

Great article. I find this conversation very difficult because its alway loaded with my own emotions. I was part of the same church for 32 years (yes, from birth). I've struggled with this switching-not-switching-church issue for the last 7 years because I've had these 4 things mentioned here in my head and they did convince me to stay. However, I've come to a point now where church is more about duty and responsibility and my wife and I have decided to switch. That's of course not to say that this article isn't valid or true, just that, taken to the extreme, these principles can be unhealthy. Read more at

‘Arrested Development’ Will Be Back in 2016

Arrested Development Executive Producer Brian Grazer has once again confirmed that more episodes of the comedy series are in the works for Netflix. Two months after telling Bill Simmons that the team was trying to create another 17 episodes, Grazer stopped by Adam Carolla’s podcast and outlined the timetable for the return. Currently, the plan is to film the season in early 2016 and release it to Netflix a few months later. He told Carolla, "Netflix is determined to do more episodes, so we're gonna do more episodes ... I made the call to Mitch to say that everybody's into it." Season four wasn’t exactly a fan or critical favorite, so hopefully this one won’t be a huge mistake ...

The Duggars and the Evil Outside

ok there is no justification but really if you were being used in a mighty way to counter the world’s definition of ‘modern family’ why would u be immune to the sin of self righteous, or the attack of the enemy to discredit your entire ministry. why we shouldn’t trust in our own righteousness ANYTHING is possible. some Christians are so judgemental bc the enemy has never had reason to visit their house. They aren’t assaulted with temptations to discredit their ministry bc they are not a threat to his kingdom. They are not making a DIFFERENCE. say what u want jim Bob and Michelle called in to question MANY MANY folks choices and lifestyle decisions by their simple WITNESS to have a godly family. no they didn’t do the right thing..but Christians who stay up in the hills and effect nobody have few threats of falling..why? bc they aren’t doing anything for God except ‘theologing’ to each other. if u are ON the battlefield you can expect to have some temptations and failures. and he was an adolescent NOT an adult. not justifying anything but watching pornography is just as sinful.

Grief and God’s Good Timing

When you have to wait for something you really want with all your heart, whether it’s getting your first bicycle or having children after struggling with infertility, receiving that desire is an exquisite joy. Because we had to wait with increasing longing for Al’s release, any other emotions—like regret or wishing to prolong the time or to hang on—were burned away, and seeing Al finally set free was a moment of nothing but celebration. In the midst of such great sorrow at losing my husband and my children’s dad, what more wonderful gift than to see that moment transformed into joy?

8 Lessons from 20 Years of Marriage

Marriage is like a bridge: it must be perennially strong to hold the weight that will put stress on its foundation. In 2007, most of us recall the Minneapolis bridge that collapsed, sending 13 motorists to a sudden death. The culprit? Unrepaired cracks beneath. Once too much tonnage was placed atop the decaying structure, it gave way and crumbled. Marriage can be the same way when pressure is put on it, particularly pressure of an acute variety. My wife and I have walked through many dangers, toils, and snares together. No doubt, there were some cracks in our marriage, but it pleased God to strengthen them and make the bridge strong enough to buttress the traffic. Had Christ and his Word not been the cornerstone, the bridge would have tumbled down like a house of cards.

Why Christian Education in Israel Could Vanish

Arab MKs [members of the Knesset] Ayman Oudeh, Osama Saadia, Haneen Zoabi, Zouheir Bahloul, Yousef Jabareen, and Aida Touma-Suliman are all graduates of Christian community schools in Israel; more than 30 percent of Arab MKs are graduates of these schools. The alumni of these schools have similarly outstanding academic achievements, even though only 4 percent of all Arab pupils study in them. For some reason, the state’s leaders seem determined to crush these producers of Arab MKs and academics.

The Basics of Christianity

True, biblical faith believes that God is Savior, so true, biblical faith never allows us to shift the blame. Faith won't allow us to point the finger and say it wasn't our sin that caused our response. Faith won't allow us to take an arrogant, self-righteous stance. Yet simultaneously, faith won't allow us to be swallowed up by guilt and remorse. True, biblical faith recognizes with humility our need for daily grace while allowing us to rest in the finished work of Christ on our behalf.

What We’re Reading This Summer (2015)

J. K. Rowling,  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince  (Scholastic, 2005). Over the last few years, usually on summer and winter breaks, I’ve been re-reading the entire Harry Potter series. While some kids grew up in Middle Earth or Narnia, I grew up in Hogwarts, warding off dementors and cheering for Gryffindor in Quidditch (although the Sorting Hat probably would have placed me in Ravenclaw). I appreciate how this series awakened a love of reading, imagination, and story at a young age for me. Because of that, I look forward to reading the series again—and then maybe do a marathon watch of the movies. There wouldn’t be a Rowling without Tolkien and Lewis, but it’s Potter who whet my appetite for Frodo and Aslan. (Jerram Barrs’  Echoes of Eden: Reflections on Christianity, Literature, and the Arts,  esp. ch. 8 on Harry Potter, is also a great read.)

The Narcissism of Minor Differences

But what if the thing we fear most isn’t actually conformity at all, but uniformity? That the thing we least wish to face is the fact that humans are, at the bottom, pretty much alike? I realize this is anathema to the citizens of modernity, but let’s face facts here: we all do pretty much the same things, all over the world. Nearly everyone “conforms” to a life of relationships, various levels of education, eating, sleeping, fornicating, reproducing, working, etc. Sure, some men are factory workers and some are writers, and some live in cities and some in the country, and some drive cars and some ride bikes, but most of us are doing the same categories of things.

Are Scientists Really Split on Evolution? By Austin Fischer

In the minds of many of our people, scientists are, more or less, split over the theory of evolution (by which I mean the general theory that humans have evolved over time and didn’t instantly appear as is 6000 or so years ago). They probably couldn’t assign any percentages to what they think the split is and probably haven’t thought about it that much. Rather, they vaguely perceive that some scientists believe in evolution and some don’t.

The Real Reason for the Caitlyn Jenner Freakout

I’m very glad you posted Brendan O’Neill’s comments, because the notion that only “religious and social conservatives are so unnerved by the Caitlyn Jenner freakshow” is quite wrong – as O’Neill himself demonstrates. I’m quite liberal and non-religious, as are most of my friends, and I can tell you we’ve all been sickened and angered by this event – not because of what Jenner has done to himself, because that’s his private business (though it appears from all available scientific evidence that he is deluded if he thinks his physical transformation will have any positive long term effect); no, what has appalled about this event is the centrality and publicity it has been given in the news cycle, at a time when much more serious events are unfolding everywhere around the planet. The Middle East is in flames, China is getting belligerent in the South China Sea, countries are being inundated with refugees, global weather is increasingly freakish, our own Presidential campaigns are underway, inequality continues it rise, there’s an uptick in the crime rate – one can easily go on in this vein – yet one individual’s sex change has become the new cause celebre.

Blind Spots

That’s the basic premise of Collin Hansen’s new book, Blind Spots: Becoming a Courageous, Compassionate, and Commissioned Church . Hansen calls on Christians in different camps to stop doing battle with each other and begin seeing “differences as opportunity.” If we do, the very believers we’ve identified as the problem awaken us to those dimensions of the Christian life that we’ve overlooked or ignored.

Mindfulness Doesn’t Have to Be All About Us

Her words echoed in my mind as I read The Way of Tea and Justice by Becca Stevens. An Episcopal chaplain at Vanderbilt University, Stevens founded and runs a both a residential recovery community for women as well as two small businesses that support women who have survived sexual trafficking and addiction. In her new book, Stevens writes beautifully about being “in the moment” and presents a model for a kind of mindfulness that extends outward lovingly to those in need.

From Transgender to "Transable" for BIID

“We define transability as the desire or the need for a person identified as able-bodied by other people to transform his or her body to obtain a physical impairment,” says Alexandre Baril, a Quebec born academic who will present on “transability” at this week’s Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Ottawa. “The person could want to become deaf, blind, amputee, paraplegic. It’s a really, really strong desire.”

The Definitive Ranking of Christian T-Shirts

That said, I must confess that, between all of our kids, we used to have a boatload of Christian t-shirts in our house. But they were all from being on staff at a summer camp. The name of the camp...a Scripture passage...and the graphic of a tree. Simple. Not remotely silly or derivative. Also not a feeble attempt at being "cool" or funny or irreverent. So I'm not against all Christian t-shirts — just those that send the wrong messages.

'A.D. The Bible Continues': Saul, Peter, and the Skeptics

Saul, as depicted here, is so radically transformed by his encounter with the resurrected Jesus that he's itching to spread the gospel in a take-charge kind of way—but of course, Saul was busy persecuting the Christians and even killing some of them just a week or two earlier, so Peter and the others don't take kindly to Saul's presumptuousness.

Stage Two Exile: Are you ready for it? - The Gospel Coalition Australia | TGC Australia

I have changed my mind on this one. In the last five or six years the culture (read: elite framework that drives the culture) is increasingly interested in bringing the church back into the public square. Yes, you heard that right. But not in order to hear it, but rather, in order to flay it, expose its real and alleged abuses and to render it naked and shivering before a jeering crowd. It is Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego standing up before the statue of gold, whilst everyone else is grovelling and going, “Pssst, kneel down for goodness sake!” It is officials conspiring with the king to show that Daniel’s act of praying towards Jerusalem three times per day is not simply an archaic and foolish hope, but a very real threat to the order of the society and the new moral order that will hold it together.
