Obama’s “Amazing Grace” | Think Christian

This moment was touching, I believe, because of how deeply it resonated with so much of the meaning and action of the Christian tradition. The history of the song itself is relevant in many ways to the events that led to this moment. “Amazing Grace” was written by former slave trader John Newton, who meant to express his wonder at God’s forgiveness after Newton had repented. Earlier in his eulogy, Obama noted that God works in mysterious ways and had a different plan than that of accused killer Dylann Storm Roof. That “he didn’t know he was being used by God.”

1 Responding to the Supreme Court Decision on Same-Sex Marriage

But I want to point out to people, you know, there's been a furor about religious freedom in connection with same-sex marriage, especially in the recent year. Under a 1990 opinion, which sadly was authored by Justice Scalia, the Court dramatically reduced the amount of protection given to free exercise and said, if a state makes a law that's neutral on its faith, like everybody, same-sex marriage, opposite-sex marriage, they're both good. If the law does not target religion on its faith, it doesn't single it out, then even if it burdens religion, the burden has to stand. The law will not fall if it's a rational relationship to a legitimate state interest.

Good Motives Gone Bad

The adage tells us that there is a destination, the road to which is paved with good intentions. It is the destination that we would prefer not to reach. Good intentions can have disastrous results and consequences. When we look at the revolution of worship in America today, I see a dangerous road that is built with such intentions. The good purposes that have transformed worship in America have as their goal to reach a lost world—a world that is marked by baby boomers and Generation Xers who have in many ways rejected traditional forms and styles of worship. Many have found the life of the church to be irrelevant and boring, and so an effort to meet the needs of these people has driven some radical changes in how we worship God.

On Twenty Years of Marriage

There is only one human relationship we come know in this life that is meant by God to be intimate in affection, proximity, and purpose until death itself separates us—the marriage relationship. In marriage God gives a gift of incalculable worth—a sworn partner for life.

Why the gay marriage debate was over in 1950 | Joel J. Miller

Raised as a devout Catholic who spent 35 early adult years in Evangelical churches before returning to my Catholic roots 7 yrs ago- my husband and I raised our 5 children with a solid Biblical foundation. Today they are all happily married and parents. Yet I realized the “lost culture war”‘even with my own children when – within the past 9 months I independently asked 2 of my girls….One a professional musician and one a United States Marine Officer…what % of people in our country are gay. Shockingly these women (living in separate states and 8 years apart) told me the exact same thing: “25%”. They were very surprised when I told them they were off by a factor of about 7. But it was a great indicator to me of how deep the propaganda had sunk into my own children.

A Hamster Wheel Floating

Reason itself needs a place on which to stand; while it can be used without acknowledging its foundation, its use can never be justified without affirming its proper place. That place is creation. Until we recognize that all of our reasoning, all of our knowledge, all of our experiences of the world have their ontological and epistemological foundation in God himself, our reasoning and experiences are vain and futile. Whatever truth we do gain from them, we gain only because we continue to "live, move and have our being" in God. But if we refuse to acknowledge that truth, we'll forever be trapped in our own culpable futility. Like a hamster wheel floating in the air, we might still think we're making real progress, but, when it comes to rationality, it's all a viciously circular illusion.

John: The Divisive Apostle of Love

That is what we see in the life of the younger disciple John. In his early years he was the most unlikely candidate to be remembered as the apostle of love. But three years with Jesus began to transform a self-centered fanatic into a mature man of balance. Three years with Jesus moved this Son of Thunder toward becoming an apostle of love. At the very points where he was most imbalanced, Christ gave him equilibrium, and in the process John was transformed from a bigoted hothead into a loving, godly elder statesman for the early church.

MIT physicist Alan Lightman on fine-tuning and the multiverse

Excellent articles, both Lightman’s and yours. It seems a quibble, but the only critique I would have is that, at one point, you seem to share Lightman’s presumption that “faith” is groundless belief or acceptance, like Kierkegaard’s “leap” (though you do point out that we have evidence for God besides the fine-tuning of the universe). What atheists have is not “faith” (not in any Biblical sense) in a multi-verse but a baseless, grasping, and desperate credulity in an utterly abstract concept that not only has no empirical basis whatsoever, but has no conceivable way to be tested. Lightman seems to understand this lack at one level, but he doesn’t seem willing to admit that the “story” of multiple universes is not in the least bit scientific (despite the conceptual theorizing and allied mathematics it generates), but is rather the worst sort of vacuous metaphysical speculation–the kind that is concocted to explain away self-evident or well-evidenced truths that one does not want to accept. Since the positing and empirical verification of the “Big Bang” theory (a pejorative title attached by atheist astronomer Fred Hoyle, who did not like the theological implications of the theory), the real astronomical and cosmological evidence has increasingly substantiated what the apostle Paul wrote, that “what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

How will gay marriage affect my marriage?

Obviously? Well it isn’t obvious to a lot of us so far. It does smack of fear because your points all are about the negative consequences that might happen. It looks like fear from the way you phrased things. My reply to your 10 points is while they are true – so what? None of those things by themselves or in aggregate are good reasons not to marry and have children. And how does marrying, having Godly children achieve less than chastity? They are different callings. If you are called to be celibate and/or can’t find anyone then you should embrace it and make the most of it. God will honor and bless that. But a Godly line of progeny can impact the world over generations – something a single man cannot achieve. As a married man and father I have responsibilities, joys, privileges and a deeper walk with God in ways that I did not and could not have as a single man. I would not have had my new job as an Academic Dean at a Classic Academy unless I had been married and had my girls. I now have the opportunity to shape thousands of young lives for God over the next decades specifically because of my marriage and children.

9 Advice from Chesterton: Don’t Take Down the Fence until You Know Why It’s There - Stand to Reason Blog

This paradox rests on the most elementary common sense. The gate or fence did not grow there. It was not set up by somnambulists who built it in their sleep. It is highly improbable that it was put there by escaped lunatics who were for some reason loose in the street. Some person had some reason for thinking it would be a good thing for somebody. And until we know what the reason was, we really cannot judge whether the reason was reasonable. It is extremely probable that we have overlooked some whole aspect of the question, if something set up by human beings like ourselves seems to be entirely meaningless and mysterious. There are reformers who get over this difficulty by assuming that all their fathers were fools; but if that be so, we can only say that folly appears to be a hereditary disease. But the truth is that nobody has any business to destroy a social institution until he has really seen it as an historical institution. If he knows how it arose, and what purposes it was supposed to serve, he may really be able to say that they were bad purposes, or that they have since become bad purposes, or that they are purposes which are no longer served.

So-Called Same-Sex Marriage

The Bible is not silent about such decisions. Alongside its clearest explanation of the sin of homosexual intercourse (Romans 1:24–27) stands the indictment of the approval and institutionalization of it. Though people know intuitively that homosexual acts (along with gossip, slander, insolence, haughtiness, boasting, faithlessness, heartlessness, ruthlessness) are sin, “they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them” (Romans 1:29–32). “I tell you even with tears, that many glory in their shame” (Philippians 3:18–19).

The only decision that matters

I am excited. While I would not choose this direction for our country or our culture, and though I lament the very real harm that this Supreme Court decision will do in millions of lives, I also believe that a sovereign God rules supreme in human affairs and He is at work making of the nations a heritage for His Son. The Triune God has not called an emergency session and will not be announcing a strategy of response to the latest development. He is working all things—even and especially this—to His glory for our good.

Pastor to Be Prosecuted for 'Hate Crime' of Calling Islam 'Satanic,' 'Heathen' During Sermon

Jesus said that he was hated. Even in the hate Jesus prayed Father forgive them for they know not what they do. When hated, by a particular view, as a Christian forgiveness is the road to take. With that said, Jesus said I came not to send peace but a sword….. not a literal sword but an illustration of what His life , death, and resurrection would mean for a follower of His to give complete allegiance to Him ….. it would mean people would persecute, prosecute, and hate those that say Jesus is God’s Son and He is Lord over all, and any that proclaims Jesus is not the way to God are liars and hostile in their mind and life to God…..It is said in Scripture , the Bible, they hated me without a cause….. what about hating God? Hating God is the plight of all mankind and it is when we come to Christ hate is forgiven but hate begins not in the sense of degrading the physical makeup of a human being but it begins because the Christian stands on the teachings of Christ and His saving grace and proclaims any other religion is vanity. The Christian is called to pray and proclaim that Jesus is the way , the truth, and the life and admittance to God is through Jesus.

No Sore Losers on Sunday

We head to church this weekend with heavy hearts. The cloud of the Supreme Court’s 5-to-4 decision hangs over our corporate worship — and we don’t even yet know or feel all the consequences of the historic decision. The sense of sadness over a political decision is unlike many of us in the Christian community have experienced in our young lifetimes — the nationwide legalization of so-called same-sex marriage in the highest, most powerful court of our land.

What Jon Foreman Learns from Music

Then I think the other element music teaches you is that everything is always changing, not to get stuck in one key or one time signature—don’t be afraid of trying something new. Sometimes, that’s where the joy is. And for me, music is all about joy. Even if it’s a song about heartache, there’s a joy in speaking honestly and singing honestly about that heartache. Again, it’s like this childlike innocence that I find in most of my favorite musicians. When you meet them, they are playing from the motivation of joy. And that’s certainly a lifelong lesson for me, as well.

Everything Has Changed and Nothing Has Changed — The Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest court in the land, and its decisions cannot be appealed to a higher court of law. But the Supreme Court, like every human institution and individual, will eventually face two higher courts. The first is the court of history, which will render a judgment that I believe will embarrass this court and reveal its dangerous trajectory. The precedents and arguments set forth in this decision cannot be limited to the right of same-sex couples to marry. If individual autonomy and equal protection mean that same-sex couples cannot be denied what is now defined as a fundamental right of marriage, then others will arrive to make the same argument. This Court will find itself in a trap of its own making, and one that will bring great harm to this nation and its families. The second court we all must face is the court of divine judgment. For centuries, marriage ceremonies in the English-speaking world have included the admonition that what God has put together, no human being – or human court – should tear asunder. That is exactly what the Supreme Court of the United States has now done.

Some Advice on Same-Sex Marriage for US Church Leaders From a Canadian - Carey Nieuwhof

I absolutely positively love this post! How wonderful is our God. How much more glory should be given to him because he is bigger than all of this! My thoughts align with you and I too feel that this is where God is taking us, to a new understanding a deeper more heartfelt connection. What duty do we have as Christians other than attempt to bring others to him in a manner that he provides. I have found myself asking why do I not have a problem with the ruling passed down by our government? And so often feel as though he answers me with, How great is your faith?” I have read Romans and loved seeing that God allowed this type of sin to occur. So if he allowed it, who better to one day overcome it? He will, my faith will not allow me to think otherwise. My heart knows His Truth. I read Old Testament stories that over and over again prove what believing in God and having faith in him truly means. I see what his wrath is capable of doing. Parting seas bringing down giants…the lists go on and on. I see that even though God was active in these times without faith, you do not have enough to turn away from sin.

Fighting Our Fears with God-Given Faith

Don’t grow weary in doing good. Don’t grow faint because of fear. Don’t lose heart. The world today does indeed look grim. But there is great hope. It isn’t hope in you or me and our strength; it’s hope in the faithfulness and power of Christ. Lift your weak knees, unless they are bowed down in prayer to the One who saves. God isn’t asleep—he’s awake and active in our midst. If every millennial leaves the Church—and they aren’t, they are very much present—we still have a great mission to go and make disciples of all nations. If every social issue that seems to smack Christian ethics in its face becomes law—we continue to preach the truth in love and serve our neighbors. If a radical religious group begins to persecute the Church—we say with faith, you can kill the body but you can’t kill the soul.

Interesting question. I’m teaching them that people have varying views on the Bible and origins. As they grow older and able to understand more, I will talk to them about YEC, OEC, and TE. I will show them the case for and against each of these views, both scripturally and scientifically. I’m sure they will ask my own view, and that’s something I’ll share with them. But I don’t think only one view has a hold on logic. Just because some answers aren’t as simple as others doesn’t mean those answers aren’t logical.

Exploring Evangelicalism: The Assemblies of God

GW: In the late 80s, I visited with a church in China that—in the pre-Communist era—my folks had helped get started in the first half of the 20th century. After four decades of persecution and opposition, Pastor Mung, one of my parent’s colleagues, had been able to restart the church. He had spent 9 years in prison and was able to reopen the church at the age of 75. When I first met him again he was 80 years of age. At some point in the conversation, I found a way to ask Pastor Mung about the size of the church. (This was a typically American question at the height of the Church Growth Movement.) He told me that when the church re-started 5 years earlier, he had 30 mostly elderly people. But, in answer to my question, he handed me a book with the names of the adult baptized members of the church hand-written on its pages.

The Problem of Evil | Reasonable Faith

a. The chief purpose of life is not happiness, but the knowledge of God. One reason that the problem of evil seems so puzzling is that we tend to think that if God exists, then His goal for human life is happiness in this world. God’s role is to provide comfortable environment for His human pets. But on the Christian view this is false. We are not God’s pets, and man’s end is not happiness in this world, but the knowledge of God, which will ultimately bring true and everlasting human fulfillment. Many evils occur in life which maybe utterly pointless with respect to the goal of producing human happiness in this world, but they may not be unjustified with respect to producing the knowledge of God. Innocent human suffering provides an occasion for deeper dependency and trust in God, either on the part of the sufferer or those around him. Of course, whether God's purpose is achieved through our suffering will depend on our response. Do we respond with anger and bitterness toward God, or do we turn to Him in faith for strength to endure?

RZIM Canada

It was my privilege to attend the superbly organized Canadian RZIM Summer School at Trinity Western University this July. The conference brought together a team of gifted and diverse presenters and enthusiastic attendees who spanned a wide age range, dominated by students and recent graduates. God took this mix of people and spoke to them through His Word, worship, prayer and fellowship on how we might better understand our times and our calling. The topics were extremely relevant. I particularly appreciated the personal stories of how God worked in the lives of the presenters. Despite the dense and rich content, there was time for reflection, prayer, and opportunity for developing friendships. Overall, this was one of the most significant and cohesive conferences that I have ever been to. Stuart Hamilton, ON

You Aren’t as Smart as You Think You Are . . . So Don’t Manuscript Your Sermons: A Friendly Response to Jason Dees |

I try to get my students to envision the preaching task as a counseling session writ large. If someone makes an appointment with a pastor to say they are thinking about leaving their spouse or committing suicide, the pastor should most definitely get his biblical thoughts together and prayerfully prepare for the conversation. He will probably jot some verses down to reference or some ideas he wants to word in a particular way. Nevertheless, he would almost certainly not prepare a manuscript and say upon their arrival, “I have prepared this document to share with you and I will say every word or at least most of the words because I want to get them just right.” Why not? Because this is a weighty moment pregnant with emotion and consequence and the last thing he would want is to seem impersonal or that he thinks this is simply a matter of the appropriate facts and information. No, he wants to have a biblically faithful and deeply personal conversation. Are those realities any less vital in the pulpit?

Biblical “Faith”: Trusting What Can’t Be Seen on the Basis of What Can - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

Christianity is grounded in the evidence of the eyewitness gospel accounts. These documents make claims about the history of the First Century and the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. As such, these claims are both verifiable and falsifiable . As we grow in our confidence related to the reliability of the Gospels , our reasoned trust in what they claim (and what they promise) will also grow. The gospels describe many “things not seen”. God is immaterial and invisible, and many of the promises of God are yet unfulfilled. But we can trust the things we can’t see on the basis of the things we can. We can move in faith toward the future on the basis of what God has demonstrated in the past.

Are You Hearing God’s Voice or Your Own?

A surrendered heart that is ready to respond unconditionally to the voice of God is without doubt the best prerequisite for hearing the voice of God clearly. Jesus said that revelation comes to those who are willing to follow God’s ways (John 14:21). If you’re not able to keep your heart open for an answer you don’t like, perhaps it’s better not to ask!

After Acts

Having written my own academic book on the fate of the apostles, I was pleasantly surprised to read Litfin’s cautious assessment of the historical record. He examines each apostle carefully and leaves us with a fair and sober-minded conclusion. For instance, writers often think Simon the Zealot was a member of the revolutionary party that helped spur the Jewish uprising against Rome in AD 66. Many commentators base their entire perception of Simon on this claim! Yet as Litfin rightly notes, the term “zealot” during the time of Jesus’s ministry likely referred to someone who had intense devotion to God and his law (Acts 21:20; Gal. 1:14), not a member of the official “zealot” party that attempted to overthrow the government.
