Making Evangelical Churches More Inviting to Christian Intellectuals

There is a growing crisis in evangelical churches today. However, most evangelicals are unaware of the nature of the emergency or of its looming repercussions. The problem is that many intellectually oriented Christian adults increasingly feel out of place in evangelical churches. They often say that as intellectuals, the typical evangelical church has little to offer them in terms of the life of the mind. Some even feel that their insatiable hunger for thinking and learning has caused them to be viewed as unwelcome within their local church congregations.

As Solomon warned, “Of making many books there is no end” (Ecc 12:12). There is no way to read everything, and not everything deserves to be read. I say that in order to confront the notion that anyone, anywhere, can master all that could be read with profit. I read a great deal, and a large portion of my waking hours are devoted to reading.

Stop Dating Jesus: We Know He Will Come, Just Not When

But waiting for Jesus on the basis of God’s promise also produces hope, because it means the foundation of our waiting is not merely a wish; it’s a certainty grounded in the character of God himself. In Acts 1:10–11, two angels promise that Jesus will return from heaven. That promise produces great hope within us as we cling to it and build our lives upon it. It yields a robustly biblical hope that we will not be condemned at the last day, because Jesus our advocate will rescue us from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

Coming Soon: The Revised Apologetics Study Bible for Students

The student apologetics Bible first released in 2010 and has sold over 160,000 copies. To be honest, this has blown away my expectations. This shows the hunger for both relevant and practical resources that tackle the real questions students are asking. On July 1 we are releasing an updated, expanded, and improved version . Here are a few ways the update will be different from the first version:

The world's most astonished atheist

Nearly six months pregnant with her second son, she lived in Ossining, N.Y., with her toddler and her then husband, the troubled novelist William (Bill) Lindsay Gresham. Jewish-born and Bronx-raised, Joy had been an atheist since childhood and became a card-carrying member of the Communist Party in her early 20s.

12
The Trinity Solves the First Philosophical Question about Reality

The definition of the Trinity was not invented to solve the problem of the one and the many. Rather, the doctrine of the “Trinity” was formulated to accurately represent three truths Scripture reveals about God: (1) there is one God, (2) the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each divine, and (3) the three persons are distinct from each other. Given these biblical truths, early Christian writers, such as Tertullian, began to speak of God’s character as triune.

Sometimes God Just Closes Doors

When you stand up for what’s right and end up in jail (as was the case for John); when you have cancer; when you lose your job; when your house is robbed; when your parents get divorced; when you’re sick and laying on the floor and your children ask, “Daddy, are you okay?” Jesus is still Jesus. And he will be enough for you.

Initially, participants are chosen scientifically by a random selection of telephone numbers and residential addresses. Persons in selected households are then invited by telephone or by mail to participate in the web-enabled KnowledgePanel®. It’s Time for More Christians to Address Gun Violence

In a piece on his website supporting gun ownership, Southern Baptist Convention Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission President Russell Moore suggests that gun violence is lowest where community is strongest—and the Church is a keystone community’s keystone. “Both sides of the debate are longing for the kind of civic community that is slipping away in a globalizing, urbanizing America,” he says. “Into this void must step churches that foster and build real communities built on real love and real truth.”

When we are unified in our mission to love and help one another, the gun control debate is reduced to background noise. A Church united in purpose no longer needs to fear the division caused by the debate around personal firearms, and pastors can speak frankly and openly about the problem of gun violence within their communities. At the congregational level, churches can begin working as change-agents within their neighborhoods.

Argue at the Worldview Level | Stand to Reason

As it happens, if we seek to make disciples of Christ by arguing for the truth of Christianity, we will dramatically affect the future —not only in the most important way (by bringing people to Christ), but also through the eventual rise of countless other worldview symptoms as people’s worldviews begin to conform to the reality of God’s world. This is not to say we should never argue about the symptoms themselves; those arguments need to continue in the public square. It’s merely to encourage you to bring your discussions with family and friends back to the worldview level as much as possible. The real and lasting change to our culture will ultimately happen over the long term, one person at a time, as they come to know and follow Christ.

Here’s How to Make Time to Pursue Your Dream Job

Let’s say for instance your dream is to write for a living. You’re probably looking at a huge body of work you’ll have to develop before you get to that point.

Come up with a list of target publications you’d like to be featured in by the end of the year, a number of pieces you can reasonably write per week or month, then begin writing and submitting. If you stick to it, the least you’ll have is a great deal of work (and therefore, experience) under your belt by the year’s end.

How Do We Know There Is a God?

What people often do not realize is that even if God appeared on the earth (which He has, in the person of Jesus Christ), we did not exist in eternity past and do not know the future, so we cannot prove by any human standard that He is eternal. Our understanding is limited, so we cannot prove that God knows all. And our limited perspective renders us incapable of proving God’s standard of morality as absolute and true. Not only that, but by our own fallible standards, our “telescopes are short-sighted,” and we cannot determine if He is the only God that exists inside (or outside) the universe. So, even if we could observe and scientifically test God by our own standards of operational science , we would be unable to prove all of His divine, eternal attributes because of our own limited mortality.

American Pravda: CNN Producer Says Russia Narrative “bullsh*t"

In the recent video footage obtained by Project Veritas, John Bonifield a Sr. Producer at CNN, admits to several beliefs that are in direct conflict with the official CNN narrative that Trump has colluded with Russia, and that Russia has interfered with the 2016 election. Bonifield expresses clear doubts that there is a fire behind the Russia smoke, stating, “I haven’t seen any good enough evidence to show that the President committed a crime.” He also confirms suspicions that CNN staff is ideologically biased against Trump, stating, “I know a lot of people don’t like him and they’d like to see him get kicked out of office…” Bonifield even further confirms CNN’s bias against the President, stating, “I think the President is probably right to say, like, look you are witch hunting me...you have no real proof.” Bonifield exposes that Russia has been great for CNN’s ratings, and that orders from CEO Jeff Zucker himself have directed CNN to pursue Russia leads at the expense of other stories. Bonifield states “And the CEO of CNN said in our internal meeting, he said ‘good job everybody covering the Climate Accords, but we’re done with it let’s get back to Russia.

How Far Is Too Far?

But if we’re able to answer that we’re after more of Jesus in dating and in marriage, the boundaries that once looked so stale, boring, and old-fashioned suddenly become our best friends in the fight. They’re the courageous, faith-filled steps we take to find more of Jesus together. They’re the battles we win together against all of Satan’s worst attacks.

You Are Not Your Sexuality

We must respond to the secular narrative with a Christian one. This is the rationale behind LivingOut , and behind  this video . The world needs to hear same-sex attracted Christians like me share their experiences of God’s goodness in this issue. The culture needs to know there is a different calculus for measuring human flourishing. There is another, better script available.   But the church needs to hear these stories too. We can so easily question whether God’s Word on this issue really is good. True? Sure. But good? That can be a harder question.   This talk is one attempt to outline some of the key lessons for the whole church that those of us with same-sex attraction are learning. Here are five:

Sex on Campus: She Can Play That Game, Too

“For most of you, the cornerstone of your future and happiness will be inextricably linked to the man you marry, and you will never again have this concentration of men who are worthy of you,” advised Ms. Patton, who has two sons, one a Princeton graduate and the other a current student. In many places, Ms. Patton was derided for wanting to return to the days of the “Mrs. degree,” though a few female writers, noting how hard it can be for women to find mates in their 30s, suggested that she might have a point. (Ms. Patton just landed a book deal with a division of Simon & Schuster.)

The Courage You Need in Life’s Uncertainty

At the moment of crisis, God acknowledged that Ahaz’s battle was not just outside the city walls, but also in his mind. It was essential for Ahaz to remember who he was and the history he had with God. In the same way, during times of uncertainty, cultivating memory and identity as those who are in Christ is essential for accessing the resources of faith to respond to present challenges.

The President’s Commencement Speech Illustrates the Need for An Evidential Faith | Cold Case Christianity

My interest here is less in the political rivalry than it is in the nature of the President’s characterization of his conservative opposition’s thinking process. His statement (when coupled with the rest of the speech) seems to reflect the growing attitude of our society: “Conservatives are anti-science, anti-evidence, and anti-intellectual.” It sounds much like the claims made against Christians, doesn’t it? “You Christians continue to deny the evidence for evolution and resist the changing moral standards. You’re anti-science, anti-evidence and anti-intellectual.” I’m sure you’ve heard something similar to this, especially if you’ve engaged atheists on the Internet.

How Christians See Muslims

Case in point: President Donald Trump’s revised executive order on travel, which temporarily halts the refugee program and restricts entry from several Muslim-majority countries. Self-identified white evangelicals support the policy by a 3 to 1 margin (Pew Research Center) and are the only religious group in America that has grown more supportive of banning Muslims from America (PRRI). During the election, outspoken leader Franklin Graham even emphasized on Facebook that he came up with the idea well before Trump did.

A Supernatural Birth by Steven Lawson | June 27, 2017

In current times, we may associate the term “supernatural” with many different things. In pop culture, the word “supernatural” might evoke thoughts of fairy tales, mythology, science fiction movies, or other stories where the realities that govern our daily existence do not seem to apply. In Christian circles, “supernatural” brings to mind deep spiritual truths about the Christian life. However, we may rarely think about the fact that our own experience of coming to faith has profoundly supernatural origins. In this lecture, Dr. Lawson will explain how Scripture presents the Christian’s new birth as a supernatural event.

Philippians 1:1: Who Does God Want to Govern His Church?

Understanding the historical context of a book can be very helpful in our Bible study. In this lab, John Piper focuses our attention on “Philippi,” (v.1), which was a Greco-Roman colony during the time Paul wrote his letter. You can read more about the start of the Church in Philippi by reading the conversion stories of three people in Acts 16:12-40.

Six Wrong Reasons to Check Your Phone in the Morning

We each have a role: father, mother, boss, employee, whatever. There are burdens that are coming at us in the day that are weighty. The buck stops with us. Decisions have to be made about our children, the house, the car, the finances, and dozens of other things. Life is full of weighty responsibilities, we feel inadequate for them, and we are lying there in bed feeling fearful — maybe even resentful — that people put so much pressure on us. We are not attracted to this day, and we prefer to avoid it for another five or ten minutes. And there is the phone to help us postpone the day.
