Challenge: If God Requires Atonement, He Lacks Something - Stand to Reason Blog
That seems sort of backwards. I always thought atonement had everything to do with us and nothing to do with God. Atonement is the concept of justice. Since God is just, he cannot leave injustice unpunished because it is unfair. Old Testament atonement was more for the benefit of the person offering the sacrifice. The atonement of Jesus is far more complex than that. Jesus atones for Israel because Israel is called to bear the sins of the world, but Israel cannot because she refuses to do so. Therefore Jesus takes that mantle on himself and does it on Israel's behalf, therefore bringing forgiveness to the whole world. That really doesn't have to do with God's nature, but the situation of the way reality is. Without Jesus stepping in, there is no way for forgiveness to begin and sin to begin to go in reverse, so to speak. I think the person asking this question does not understand the concept of atonement at all.

In light of the tragedy, Hasset is keeping the focus on above, saying, "Our family would like to thank the Main Man up above, Jesus Christ, for orchestrating this very inspiring story. And for giving us enough time to give Rowden what he wanted, and show him how loved he was."

How serious are the consequences of believing in evolution? More consequences for society hinge on the cosmogenic myth of evolution than on any other. Among them are the sovereignty of self, the sexual revolution, and survival of the fittest. First, the supposed death of God in the nineteenth century ushered in an era in which […]
IRS to Pay $50,000 in Leaking of Marriage Group’s Tax Return, Donors
It has been a long and arduous process to hold the IRS accountable for their illegal release of our confidential tax return and donor list, which was ultimately given to our chief political rival by the recipient. In the beginning, the government claimed that the IRS had done nothing wrong and that NOM itself must have released our confidential information. Thanks to a lot of hard work, we’ve forced the IRS to admit that they in fact were the ones to break the law and wrongfully released this confidential information.
The Gospel Coalition - On Daughters and Dating: How to Intimidate Suitors
Raise a strong daughter, even if—no, especially if it means potential suitors question whether they can “lead her,” whatever that means to them. You’ve just identified those suitors as ineligible, without so much as an application process. Leadership is not about the strong looking for weaker people to lead. It’s about the humble looking for those whose strengths offset their weaknesses and complement their strengths. Strong leaders surround themselves with strong people, not with weak ones. Rather than finding the strengths of others threatening, they celebrate them and leverage them. This is Management 101, but I fear young Christian men and well-intentioned Christian parents of daughters have gotten a little fuzzy on the concept.
Sudan death row woman Meriam Ibrahim freed again
The US says it is working with Sudan to ensure a woman freed from death row can leave the country, after she was detained at Khartoum airport.
20 Reasons to Start Your Own Business
If you’re an entrepreneur you have heard the million reasons not to go into business: It’s too risky, you might go into debt, you’ll probably lose sleep, your social life is kaput, and the list goes on. But even with all these uncertainties, people are still attracted to the startup world. There are just as many, if not more reasons to take the leap and go into business for yourself. Here are just a few:

WORLD | Meriam Ibrahim detained trying to leave Sudan | June 24, 2014
Ibrahim, who was freed from prison on Monday, had been sentenced to die for refusing to recant her Christian faith. A judge commuted her sentence after an international outcry. Her lawyer, Eman Abdul-Rahim, said the family was trying to get on a plane bound for the United States when they were detained at the international airport in Khartoum. Daniel Wani, Ibrahim’s husband, is a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Grace to You
The perfect love of the heavenly Father is most reflected in His children when they treat others as they themselves wish to be treated. This verse is a summary of the Law and the Prophets. It’s also a paraphrase of the second great commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39). How we treat others is not determined by how we expect them to treat us or by how we think they should treat us, but by how we want them to treat us.
The Gospel Coalition - Working at Home in the Midst of Chaos
This past year has been incredibly hard. We lost two grandparents. We got a house-wide, two-week stomach bug. I gave birth to our fourth son, and my gallbladder was removed two weeks later. At the same time, a respiratory infection, which had knocked my husband off of his feet for four days straight, overcame our two-week-old and threatened to take him from me into the care of the children's hospital. I broke my ankle. My 2-year-old cracked his skull, which was followed by a DCF investigation accusing me of neglecting my children. My dad is currently in the hospital three hours away with multiple, complicated, and antibiotic-resistant infections that have been threatening his life for the past month. In the midst of all of this, I am still a mother. There is no family leave time when your family is your job.
The Gospel Coalition - Contradict: They Can’t All Be True
Wrasman concludes that after hearing the historical claims of the Gospels and evaluating the evidence, one must decide whether or not to submit to the only unified message that rings true (158). According to Wrasman, Christianity stands out among all the other religions because it is the only paid religion (Jesus was your substitute) and the only religion from God himself (168–169). As he concludes, “Christianity has the ring of truth with its detailed disclosure of facts, consistent message, fulfilled prophecy, and unique standing as the only religion that offers divine redemption through the work of its founder, who claimed to be God incarnate.”
Primer on Reading the Bible
Godly Bible study will lead to an increased love for what pleases God (John 8:29; 2 Corinthians 5:9) and a corresponding hatred for the things God hates (Hebrews 1:9). It will lead us to seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33) and to do all that we do for God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). It will lead us to have passion for Jesus and compassion for people (Matthew 22:37–40; 1 Timothy 1:5; Revelation 2:4). Jesus prayed that the Father’s love for him would be in us and that he would be in us (John 17:26). He prayed that we would experience the Father’s love for us, have deep fellowship with him, and then love him as his Father does (Romans 5:5; 1 John 4:19). Such love is upward-facing toward God and outward-facing toward others. To say that we love God while failing to show love to others signifies a failure to love God truly (1 John 4:20).
Michael wakes up in the hospital with a bandage on his head and fear in his heart. The stress of building a growing business, with his wife Sarah, caused him to collapse while on a morning jog. Here's the Secret Memo That Justified Anwar al-Awlaki Killing
Jameel Jaffer, the ACLU’s deputy legal director, said the release of the memo would shed new light on the government’s drone program. “There are few questions more important than the question of when the government has the authority to kill its own citizens,” he said. “This memo’s release will allow the public to better understand the scope and implications of the authority the government is claiming. We will continue to press for the release of other documents relating to the targeted killing program, including other legal memos and documents relating to civilian casualties.”
Sign the Petition - Defending Inerrancy
We’ve lost a growing number of scholars over the issue of inerrancy . This is a problem because pastors follow scholars. And ordinary people follow pastors. So it’s only a matter of time before we could see the full erosion of the Bible within our generation… unless we take action to alert the Christian community . And please sign this petition to tell your friends that you stand up for the Bible.

How Sarcasm and Snark Can Destroy a Marriage
You can change this behavior and change your marriage. Don't allow your remarks to cause nasty effects in your wife, like defensiveness, anger, and shame. You never win that way in your marriage. Snark and sarcasm communicate a lack of respect and reinforce any notions she may already have that you are a jerk. Don't be a jerk ... be her hero ... the one she's been waiting for.
I recently interviewed the Reverend Dr. Gordon Moyes, Australia’s most renowned and successful preacher, for a documentary I’m producing on the life of F. W. Boreham. Dr. Moyes (now a retired leader of a church and its various ministries staffed by over 4,000 people) described Boreham as one of the greatest influences on his own life and ministry. When the main interview concluded, I asked Dr. Moyes what he would do if he were a young pastor starting out his ministry today. “Astrophysics and astronomy!” he said. “I would learn all I could about these disciplines because these are most exciting realms of science for any preacher today and they hold the greatest fascination of any of the sciences in the mind of the public!”
Breathing new life into dying churches
Even though the legacy church plant is not an easy road, we are seeing more and more successes with this model. Wornall Road Baptist Church in Kansas City is healthy, growing and has become a vital part of its community after pastor John Mark Clifton arrived to restart a decades-old congregation that dwindled to only a handful of weekly attenders. In New Orleans, a dozen church members in their 70s partnered with church planter James Welch to birth Harbor Community Church from the ashes of their dying church. First Baptist Church in Odessa, Fla., had not seen a baptism in years. They turned to Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Fla., for help and now their baptismal waters are stirring on a regular basis once again.
Justification, Holiness, and Historical Perspective
Regarding the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, could you comment on imputation’s relationship to union with Christ? John Murray, Richard Gaffin, Peter Leithart and some other reformed theologians believe that reformed theology focuses too much on justification by imputation of an “alien righteousness”, a term which none of them particularly like, and ought to focus more on justification through union with Christ as his bride, the church. In union with Christ, what is Christ’s becomes ours. The righteousness of the Groom is now the righteousness of the Bride as well, as Christ becomes the covenant head of his bride. What belongs to the Head by nature and by perfect obedience to the Father becomes the church’s through marriage to the Son, or by another metaphor, by adoption as children of the Father. When the Father adopts a person, the treasures of his household, the access to which was won by Christ, becomes the adopted child’s treasure (the treasure being all the blessings and privileges we have by grace in our new relationship of acceptance and union with the Triune God).
Should churches “dialogue” about sexuality?
Here’s a first hand story. Our church was once in a denomination where its national body endorsed same-sex marriage. In response, our church sent a resolution to our local conference asking that the decision be reversed. The conference leaders kept the measure from being voted upon and called for a year of dialogue. Included in this, the conference sponsored a dialogue day for ministers and lay people to hear a leader from the denomination’s national office. The “dialogue” turned out to be entirely devoted to the legitimacy of same-sex marriage and why churches ought to get with the program. At the end of the day, when comments were solicited, I asked, “Why wasn’t the other side of this view presented?” The national leader said, “We haven’t created any materials for that point of view.” Turns out, the “dialogue” was entirely one-sided. The next year at conference, there were workshops advocating homosexuality, but none were permitted for the traditional view. Our resolution was overwhelmingly defeated. Our local church later exited the denomination and joined another more aligned with our convictions.
World Cup 2014: Clint Dempsey Credits His Savior Jesus Christ for Success in Life
"In college, I joined a team Bible study. God's Word brought me peace and a desire for a relationship with Him," said Dempsey. "I found that questioning Him and searching for answers through Scripture helped me grow and gave me direction. Now my faith in Christ is what gives me confidence for the future. I know that through both good times and bad, He is faithful and will watch over me."
Join us at the ERLC as we seek to explore what the gospel means for the future of marriage and sexual identity. The Gospel Coalition - 3 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Church
Church is a covenant community created by the gospel and for the gospel. It's an outpost of heaven, a light through which Christ shines and brings life. Church is the people of God, as they perpetually gather and scatter, for the purpose of making Christ known through their corporate witness of both word and life. Church is the means of both discipleship and mission. So when you're looking for a church, make sure this expansive vision of what it means to be the people of God energizes and shapes both the structures and activities of the particular expression of church you're considering.
Darkness is my Closest Friend
One of my biggest frustrations with western Christianity is our tendency to fake spiritual maturity. We use theological words and phrases that sound impressive – like kingdom, worship, and die to self – but they have little meaning in our daily lives.
Or, a pastor or Christian friend will ask us how we’re doing. Our default reaction is to lie about our situation or at least spin the struggle to make it appear as if we’re handling it in a more mature manner than we actually are.
Here’s the problem with that mentality: sick people don’t get better by pretending they’re not sick. Sick people find help and healing by admitting they have an illness and seeking out the help of a professional doctor.
PSALMS OF HONESTY
I’ve said this before, but I love the Psalms - I think they’re in the Bible to keep us honest about life. In the Psalms, you have the “nitty gritty” of the Christian life on display in almost every passage.
It’s commonplace to find the author crying out in pain, questioning the goodness and presence of God, and wanting to throw the towel in. The people in the Psalms aren’t hiding their pain and suffering.
People need to maintain a diet of nutritious foods if their bodies are to grow and thrive. But what do the people of God need in order to grow and thrive in the Christian faith? In this book, noted theologian and pastor R.C. Sproul identifies five of the crucial “nutrients” that promote spiritual growth: Bible study, prayer, worship, service, and stewardship. With biblical insight and practical wisdom, Dr. Sproul teaches Christians how to maintain a balanced “diet” that will lead to growth and mature Christian living.
Telling a great story with your life is not easy. It’s often exhausting, terribly so—and yet a growing number of evangelical writers passionately encourage us to “tell a great story with your life” or “stop trying to increase your influence and start living a great story!”

Don’t Waste Your Twenties
For those who are single by circumstances or by calling, please do not misinterpret the previous word as suggesting that you can’t be mature without marriage or kids. History is filled with examples of Christians whose singleness (whether permanent or temporary) provided the opportunity to channel passion and wisdom into fruitful ministry. Take John Stott’s advice: “Go wherever your gifts will be exploited the most.”
James Gray on Mastering the Bible - The Scriptorium Daily
The most important rule is the last. Read it prayerfully. Let not the triteness of the observation belittle it, or all is lost. The point is insisted on because, since the Bible is a supernatural book, it can be studied or mastered only by supernatural aid. In the words of William Luff, “It is the Spirit’s Bible! Copyright every word! Only His thoughts are uttered, only His voice is heard!” Who is so well able to illuminate the pages of a given book as the author who composed it? How often when one has been reading Browning has he wished Browning were at his side to interpret Browning! But the Holy Spirit, by whom holy men of old wrote, dwells within the believer on Jesus Christ for the very purpose of bringing him into all truth. Coleridge said, “The Bible without the Holy Spirit is a sundial by moonlight,” and a great than he said, “We have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given us of God” (I Corinthians 2:12). The dear old Scottish saint, Andrew Bonar, discriminated between a minister’s getting his text from the Bible, and getting it from God through the Bible; a fine distinction that holds good not only with reference to the selection of a text to preach upon, but with reference to the apprehension spiritually of any part of the Word of God.
Sudanese Christian woman rearrested, legal team says
The Sudanese court considered Ibrahim a Muslim because her father was Muslim, but she said she was a Christian and never practiced Islam. She was charged with adultery, because a Muslim woman's marriage to a Christian man is illegal in Sudan, and with apostasy, accused of illegally renouncing what was alleged to be her original faith.

Ask RC: Are evangelicals pro-life? — Highlands Ministries
Fourth, among those who can claim to do something, I suspect that most of them would claim to, in one way or another, financially support the work of their local crisis pregnancy center. This, of course, is almost certainly a good thing, something to be commended. It is not, however, something distinctly pro-life. To be pro-life is not merely to wish and hope that the abortion minded would choose life, but to believe that abortion should be illegal. One can be pro-choice and support their local CPC just as I could give money to the poor voluntarily without believing it is a function of the state to care for the poor.
Do Naturalists Consider Chance the Singular Cause of Evolution? - Christian Research Institute
First, it should be noted that there is no evidence for the suggestion that information in the genetic code can be increased through natural selection. Nor are there any known physical laws that can be invoked to account for the information-rich content of genetic material.
Methodist Pastor Won't Be Defrocked Over Officiating His Son's Gay Wedding
Last year, Frank Schaefer, of Lebanon, Pennsylvania was suspended by the Methodist Church for officiating the wedding of his gay son. He was later defrocked for refusing to promise that he would never preside over another same sex wedding. Schaefer appealed the decision , on the grounds that the church made the decision based on an assumption. Today, a nine-person United Methodist Church panel overturned the decision to defrock Schaefer, though they upheld his 30-day suspension. Schaefer will receive backpay dating back to when his suspension ended, last year ...
Ladybirds, ladybugs, and… cows? | OxfordWords blog
When this article was in the brainstorming stage, it started with the simple intention of pointing out that a ladybird was neither a bird nor a lady (I don’t mean to impugn the ladybird’s reputation; I am speaking of the definition rather than the insect’s moral character). Along the way we thought we’d point out the discrepancy between ladybird and ladybug , and perhaps that would be it. Little did we realize the linguistic journey this investigation would take us on…
The Desperation of the Labels “Pro-Choice” and “Anti-Choice”
Of all the mischaracterizations and stereotypes of the pro-life movement, I think the most desperate is that we are a small movement of grumpy men who hate women (probably because we were too dumb to attract them in the first place) and just want to enforce our judgmental and narrow-minded views on people to control them.

Justin Bieber Matters to Youth Ministry

Not because we care about celebrity status or bad-boy behavior, but because we are deeply concerned about souls and spheres of influence.
'Duck Dynasty's' Phil Robertson on Gay People: 'I'm Trying to Help Those Poor Souls and Turn Them to Jesus'
Robertson was initially suspended in December by A&E Network after his comments in the GQ magazine January issue, where he said: "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers – they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right. ... We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That's the Almighty's job. We just love 'em, give 'em the good news about Jesus – whether they're homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort 'em out later, you see what I'm saying?"

Answering Common Young Earth Creationist Arguments
The debate over the age of the universe is a hot issue for some Christians, and this unfortunately leads to a number of faulty arguments and even some name-calling. This post is not going to argue against young earth creationism specifically. Rather, I hope that it can be a resource for both young earth and old earth proponents in order to avoid faulty reasoning. Each argument’s topic will be in bold with the problem outlined and a response. [Image at head of post credit here .]
